The last thing Wilhelm expects to find at Michaels, three days before Christmas and in search of a gift to make for his niece, is one of Santa’s elves—a cute one with a wicked, inappropriate sense of humor and a kinky streak. Alabastair may have been kicked out of Santa’s village, but he’s still a Christmas expert. And he’s determined to give Wilhelm and his family the best holiday he can.
With only two days to turn the Grinch’s house into a Christmassy wonderland, they have a lot on their plate. Among the glitter and the cheer, Wilhelm and Alabastair might find more than just the holiday’s magic. But will it be enough to keep Alabastair in Wilhelm’s bed and life when the North Pole calls him back?
Emy Calirel grew up in France, but also spent some time in Africa as a child. When she finally reached adulthood, she jumped on opportunities and moved to California, then Ireland, before coming back to her roots. San Francisco still holds her heart, though, and always will.
After trying a couple different jobs, she settled down and now works in a funeral home/monumental masonry, which she loves. To handle life’s daily stress, she laughs with her coworkers a lot and spends any free time she gets reading or daydreaming about queer folks finding their happily ever after.
She’s a cat owner, a plant killer, and a San Francisco Giants fan. Wanderlust flows in her veins, and her goal is to visit every capital in Europe—if she can ever stop herself from going back to London over and over again.
Emy’s muse is a sassy being who expertly farms plot bunnies in Emy’s overgrown imagination. As a consequence, Emy has more stories and characters living in her head than she’ll ever be able to write in her lifetime. She’s fine with it, though, as, like a child, she loves playing in her sandbox.
A documentary enthusiast and curious to a fault, Emy often loses herself in research and will happily share her discoveries with everyone. Did you know most mammals empty their bladders in twenty-one seconds?
Wilhelm and Alabastair met in a mall and ended up with Wilhelm offering his couch to Alabastair for a few days. Alabastair had just been kicked out of his town and was missing his family, didn't know what to do next or where to go, so Wilhelm decided to take him in and help him start his new life.
I got confused about Albastair's hometown at first and couldn't determine if he was serious or not, if the story was contemporary or also had some magic in it. It turns out it's contemporary with a sprinke of magic to celebrate the season.
The MCs went from strangers to a couple awefully fast and the declarations weren't far off. That insta-love and insta-relationship aspect is the reason I can't deal with stories like this one. It's clear that this story wasn't for me, but if you like cute, romantic stories with some extra sugar on top then this one should make you very happy!

I don’t know how, but the author made me suspend all my disbelief and buy into elves as quickly as Wilhelm did. I should have been wanting more backstory and worldbuilding, I mean it’s an elf hanging out in Michael’s and he’s pretty open relatively quickly about who and what he is. But no, I was all “meh, it’s cool, these dudes obviously dig each other, let’s roll with it”. And roll with it, I did.
I think it worked partially because the elves in question weren’t super magical, etc. They were, for the most part, regular people who just happened to work in the North Pole. I was fine with the modern twist the author put on Santa’s story, so I could pretty much forget about that and just wallow in the pepperminty sweet goodness that was Alabastair and Wilhelm. They both fell pretty hard and fast, but they had enough snark and attitude in their banter to balance the sweetness a bit and make their relationship seem possible for the long haul.

“Never let anyone tell you binge-watching Hallmark Christmas movies is a waste of your time. It feeds the bunnies”… this needs to be on an inspirational Hallmark card or a shirt or something.
Okay… this has to be the cutest Christmas short story I’ve read, maybe ever. In this one, we have Wilhelm, who seems kind of grinchy in the beginning, but you’ll learn to understand why, but his sister and her family is coming to visit for Christmas in just a few days and has decided that this year, making their gifts would be more meaningful, but what in the world do you make a 4-year-old for a gift? So, he finds himself at the crafts store and completely out of his element….that’s where he meets Alabastair.
Alabastair is short, chubby and dressed in cute overalls with no jacket in the dead of winter in Chicago! When he see’s a helpless Wilhelm in the isles of a craft store with no idea what to do, he takes it upon himself to help the grinchy guy out. He wasn’t expecting to make a deal to help the guy out in exchange for a place to sleep for the night. It wasn’t that, that enticed Alabastair though, it was seeing the grinchy guy and wanting to show him the spirit of Christmas, because afterall, he was an elf.
Now, I know what you’re thinking… is he though? But it’s Christmas and you never know what kind of magic it’ll bring.
Now, I don’t want to give too much away because it’ll completely ruin the beautiful story that is Wilhelm and Alabastair, but even in two days, it was so easy to see how these two fell for one another and how Al gave Wilhelm a new meaning of Christmas!
(Does anyone have the page count for this? I keep running into stories without them and it's hard to keep track of my Mini Christmas Challenge total... NEVERMIND! Found it on the Dreamspinner website - 38 pages in case a Librarian reads this and can add it to the book details! Thanks.)
Faced with the horror of navigating a Michaels store right before Christmas, Wilhelm finds himself getting crafting tips from one of Santa's elves ... well, a short guy wearing green overalls and knee-high red-and-white socks with tinsel in his hair claiming to be a banished elf. In exchange for helping create something for his 4-yr-old niece, Wilhelm lets Alabastair sleep on his couch.
Before too long, Wilhelm finds his house cozily decorated for Christmas with a fresh tree and warm cookies and the love of Alabastair, who is indeed an elf and a skilled toy maker. Or as he says "Elves create toys, sugar. Who do you think came up with the sex ones?" For a short wee story, this one is full of seasonal happiness and elfish charm ... and sex. Happy Holidays! 4 stars.
This one is maybe just a little too implausible for me, not just the real-life elves, but also with allowing a stranger in a craft store to select your purchases and then inviting him to come stay at your house. Plus, I was kinda mad at the elf for Like, WTF, dude?
This was a really cute Holiday short. I fell in love with Alabastair and I loved how he made me laugh, he was beyond adorable!

Wilhelm, of ‘An Elf for Myself’ by Emy Calriel, is distressed that his sister as tricked him into celebrating Christmas this year, even though she knows he hates the holiday. Even worse, she tells him that the presents they give each other, have must be homemade.
As Wilhelm stresses over what materials to get, he happens along a dejected looking young man, Alabastair, he stops to see if he can help him. Alabastair tells him he is an elf who has been banished from the North Pole and Wilhelm isn’t sure what to think, but when Alabastair offers to help him get his supplies, he readily agrees. After shopping, Wilhelm thanks Alabastair. He starts to leave but realizes that Alabastair has nowhere to stay. He feels sorry for him and invites Alabastair to go home with him.
When they get there, Alabastair is appalled that Wilhelm has no decorations, not even a tree! He convinces Wilhelm that his niece will be horribly disappointed if the house isn’t decorated. Duly chastised, Wilhelm goes with the elf to buy the things necessary to make his home more festive. During Alabastair’s stay with Wilhelm they get closer they get. When Santa’s “representatives” come to for Alabastair, he doesn’t want to leave, but knows that he has to if he ever wants to see his family again.
I really liked the way Alabastair helped Wilhelm face and overcome his trauma about the holiday to reclaim his Christmas spirit. Alabastair’s over-the-top personality and snarky comments, added a special quality to the story. Thank you, Emy, for your delightful Advent tale.

This was a quick and easy read but a bit lacking in the emotional connection. Though these two fall for each other quickly it doesn't really feel like it. Sure, there is interest and a connection, but it doesn't feel like they are deeply in love. Yet that is exactly what the story says which just feels too soon and too hard to believe. It betrays the trust built up in one fell swoop in the climax and that is supposed to be fixed simply by the two coming back together, but that felt too easy and again, too soon. Plus Santa is a giant jerk which really sucks.
Emy was a new author for me but it was a wonderful and short holiday read :) Wilhelm and Alabastair are cute and sweet together. Wilhelm is a grumpy man who has to entertain his niece for the holiday and doesn't even have Christmas decorations put up yet. He runs into Alabastair inside Michaels and he helps Wilhelm bring some holiday cheer home. Lovely sweet holiday read that was perfect for the season :)
Every year I binge read Christmas stories. I have a Kindle collection I am always adding to, and every year I end up rereading my favorites. This story had a interesting twist on elves and how the north pole works. How Alabester ends up bringing the joy of Christmas to a m!n who had lost his spirit is sweet and an enjoyable short story that I am happy to recommend.
This is a cute little Christmas miracle romance novella that warms you up inside and is as sugary sweet as you would expect when one of the main characters is one of Santa’s elves.
Al is a kinky little elf that had me laughing every time he opened his mouth.
Christmas is supposed to be a time for miracles, this story is a one-sitting opportunity to suspend belief and get swept along by a little hokum. The story is written in the first person with a tense that is in the immediate past; consequently, the reader is reflecting on events as they happen along with the central character. What little we learn of this character is revealed as the story progresses. Not only is the premise of the book fantastical but also the responses of the characters. All act somewhat out of character and in line with the Christmas spirit. This largely works because the reader knows so little about any of them. Settings are similarly touched upon and there is no detailed sense of place. Clearly a city, it could be anywhere. Discussion of Christmas features is interesting in its presentation of normality and rationalisation of the fantastical.
Obviously, with such a short story there is no time to develop a relationship between the central characters and they instantly fall for each other, so much so that they act more like a partnered couple than people who have just met. There is no internal questioning of the logic of this and the central character seems willing to suspend belief on this fairly critical aspect of his life. As the wider history and family dynamics become more clear the reader would normally expect that this would contextualise the story and help them to make sense of what is happening. In this case, it does not and merely adds a little depth to the tale.
As noted, this is really a one-sitting story and the pace reflects this. There is no complexity and the only tension facilitates the closure of the tale.
Of course there is a happily ever after, that this puts Christmas behind it and looks to normality is quite an interesting twist.
This is the absolute cutest holiday story! This features one saucy, exiled elf and a grumpy construction company owner. Alabastair is the elf was kicked out of Santas Village for blasphemies against Christmas and will helm is the grumpy Scrooge type, hater of the holiday of good cheer who happens upon him in a craft store.
This novella was hilarious and sweet. These two couldn’t have been more different but so very suited for each other if they tried. Alabaster brought will him exactly what he needed: love, laughter and happiness; someone who could bring color and cheer any race the bad memories of Christmases past. I absolutely adored Al’s character. He was an absolutely adorable, saucy, sassy and bossy little elf who managed to bring the good tidings and cheer to effortlessly tame his growly, grumpy bear of a man with ease.
This novella feel yet another slot for happy ever after Christmas stories. This I’m sure will be another enjoyable holiday read.

An excommunicated elf with a heart of gold and a dirty mind. An inept crafter albeit successful construction business owner, on a mission to make a homemade gift for his four year old niece...THREE DAYS BEFORE CHRISTMAS! This may end like a glitter bomb of epic proportions or the two could blend as smoothly together as chocolate and peanut butter in a batch of buckeyes.
I fell in love with this author's writing when I read, "From Brussels, With Love." Calirel is also the only author I chose to read and review for this advent anthology that I was already familiar with. When her name popped up I snatched faster than greedy hands at Wal-Mart on Black Friday!
This story was so cute and chuckle worthy. The back and forth banter between Al and Wilhelm was so funny and even naughty at times. It also had sweet moments as the two men shared their darkest moments and grew closer.
There are no explicit scenes, just lots of naughty and nice one liners.

This is a fun unique take on elves. I liked that they are real humans and my heart went out to Alabastair. I nearly cried at the thought he was dropped from the North Pole in Chicago with no food, money or even a coat. But then maybe just maybe Santa wasn’t being mean but helping out both men? Christmas has never been anything but a heartache to Wilhelm ( I will let you read the story to see why) so he never celebrates. This year his sister insists he let them, and his niece comes over for Christmas lunch. The deal is… She makes lunch he has to make his nieces gift. So off to the craft store where he meets a cute, meek little man that is too helpful. I loved the contrast between Wilhelm and Alabastair. Alabastair was so fun and quirky. Great feel-good romance.
Offering a complete stranger, a Good Samaritan, a night on your couch is all about the Christmas spirit... right!? What happens when that man tells you he's one of Santa's ousted elves? You get Emy Calirel's fun, charming and whimsical An Elf to Myself
Alabastair might have been kicked out of the village but he still has unending spirit and faith in Christmas. And when he sets out to help Scrooge-like Wilhelm create a magical day for his niece, an insta-love romance befitting of the season results.
From baking cookies, to decorating the tree and handmade gifts, Alabastair and Wilhelm will put a smile on your face and joy in your heart as you begin to hope that this Christmas will bring something special for Wilhelm.
Oh this was lovely. Wilhelm hates Christmas but has to decorate and provide gifts to his sister's family who grudgingly offers to come to his house. There is a story there but we're not sure what it is. Wilhelm finds himself in Michaels, somewhat overwhelmed by the crowds and massive amounts of stuff. I can relate - HAH! The store gives me hives. Anyway, a guy in green overalls sees him and takes pity on him. Alabastair has been kicked out of Santa's village so needs to find his way in cold, snowy Chicago. Really liked this sweet, wry and quite sexy tale as we see Wilhelm's heart melt and we find out exactly why he's such a Grinch. Great characters and well told story with considerable depth for such a short book.
Sweetness overload but so good to imagine falling in love with a real Christmas elf. The reason for Alabastair's exile from Santa’s village and the way he was dumped in the middle of a big city without money, closes or insight on how to deal with the humans was too contrived for me. Anyhow, Wilhelm was there to save him from being homeless and Alabastair was so sweet and kind that he restored Wilhelm's faith in humanity. But will Alabastair stay outside of Santa’s village permanently or will Santa forgive him and bring back home?
I feel all warm and squishy right now, this is an amazingly sweet short story. Poor Al had been banished from the North Pole and was stranded outside a craft store, Wilhelm takes pity on him and brings him home. Then the sweetness begins, and the humour too, it had me chuckling frequently. You gotta read this between now and Christmas, it's cute, funny, fluffy, and magical.
A beautiful and heartwarming short novel... perfect for the Season but wonderful if read at any time of the year!! I loved how Alabastair helps Wilhelm to really believe in Christmas again - that it's more than glitz and glamor and gifts....love is the biggest part, after all!! 5 stars!!
This is a sweet whimsical tale of a man saving and elf and the elf saving him right back. There were a few tense moments but everything turned out okay.
A nice suspension of reality Christmas story - with Al ejected from santa land and Wilhelm coming to the rescue - with Christmas crafty times too. Enjoyed this light read
