4.5. If you liked Suspended, you’ll love Paralyzed. Both books are so different from most of the YA fiction that I have read. The characters aren’t continually bombarded with needless, inexplicable threats, but there is always something (suspense, impending romance, mystery, a huge revelation, etc.) that compels you to keep reading.
Plot:
At the end of Suspended, Jack left to seek revenge on Knight, Zuma felt completely betrayed by Finley, Finley was heartbroken by Zuma’s rejection, and Titus was completely distraught about what to do in Dave’s absence. Paralyzed picks up that same night and shows how each of these characters — as well as the other circus members — struggle to come to terms with the devastating turn of events.
Characters:
Paralyzed includes the same characters that Suspended did, so we’ve already seen how different each of them is. We know that they are all flawed in some way, but it’s their shortcomings and insecurities that make them (most of them) relatable and easy to root for. Paralyzed expands on each of these characters, showing us exactly how Dave interacted with each member of the circus to help him or her get past any limitations. In the end, the readers, much like the characters) are left wondering what will happen to everyone without Dave’s reassuring presence.
Writing:
One of the things I love about Noffke's books is that they are so well-edited. I only found a couple of typos, and I was reading a pre-release copy. I love clean writing because it means that I can focus more on the story at hand rather than the errors on the page. I will say that as hard as I focused on the mystery Noffke presented, the book was totally unpredictable; every time I thought I knew what would happen, I was quickly proven wrong. In terms of content, there were a couple of curse words, several disturbing scenes that detail the aftermath of Knight’s violence, and a tiny bit of innuendo. In terms of rating, I would probably give it a PG-13.
The Bottom Line:
In my review for Suspended, I mentioned that it is one of those books you start reading and all of a sudden you're done and left wanting more. The same thing applies to Paralyzed. I was reading right along when I came across the words “The End.” I thought, “Huh, how did that happen?” Then it hit me…. “No, no, no, no. It can’t stop there. I still need answers!” In a panic, I googled to see when the sequel was due out, and I breathed a huge sigh of relief to find that I only have to wait about a month for Released, the third book in the series.
