I was fortunate enough to see an advance copy of this book. It's a collection of poems about all the things Abraham Lincoln was the best or most at. (the tallest president, the skinniest, etc.) Lincoln is a great topic with an endless array of angles and stories that could be covered. And this book introduces a great mix of better-known and lesser-known Lincoln lore. All of it is presented in a series of 19 engaging poems. As an educator, I am so pleased to add this to my classroom library bookshelves. The text is "meaty," with a great depth of content about Lincoln's life. The delivery in poetic form will engage my students to read on and on about the clever facts and accomplishments of our school's namesake. Being a lifelong resident of Illinois, I was surprised at how many significant Lincoln details which I learned while enjoying the collection of poems. Meyer has clearly done her research. The text will be incorporated into our Social Emotional Learning (SEL) curriculum to highlight Lincoln's humble beginnings, perseverance, and skills as a statesman to unite our country. A remarkable man with many superlative characteristics for students to consider(and aspire to) in their lives.

Clever! Fascinating! Exceptional! These are some of the superlatives I would use to describe “The Superlative A. Lincoln: Poems About Our 16th President,” written by Eileen R. Meyer and illustrated by Dave Szalay. This light-hearted picture book starts with a definition of the word “superlative” and is packed fact-filled poems tracing Lincoln's extraordinary life. Did you know that President Lincoln was the best lumberjack or that he earned a spot in the National Wrestling Hall of Fame? How about the fact that he received his “best advice”--to grow a beard--from 11-year-old Grace Bedell, who suggested in a letter to the presidential candidate that “all the ladies like whiskers and they would tease their husbands to vote for you”? I can only imagine Ms. Meyer’s glee when she unearthed that tidbit. Readers will love the variety of rhyming poetry--as well as the brief captions accompanying the poems. The best part: Each young reader has an opportunity to explore superlative YOU! Szalay’s artwork blends perfectly with the text and the time period. A timeline and more backmatter allows readers to dig deeper. Fun for all!

We all know that Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States and that he gave one of the most famous speeches this country has ever heard, but did you know that Mr. Lincoln was a world class wrestler or that he did not like the nickname, Abe? Little known facts about our beloved president, that are delivered within a mix of poetry and prose, shed light on what made him extraordinary. Kids will enjoy learning about the different sides of such a historic figure and are left with an inspiring question, "What makes you superlative?"

There's obviously a ton of books about Abraham Lincoln, including books for kids, but this one is told in a very original and fun way through poems, text, and back matter. Lincoln's height, relationship with Frederick Douglass, the Gettysburg Address and more are discussed throughout. Basic information is given but so are interesting little-known details. A fantastic way to learn about a historical figure.

A fascinating and fun collection of poems about the life of Lincoln, told in order of his life. Each poem is accompanied by an active and folk-style illustration that makes this a strong sell for a reluctant biography reader. The back matter is rich and supports the life shown in poetry and illustration.

I can’t wait to read this book to my students about my history crush - Abraham Lincoln. It contains a collection of 19 ‘bite-sized’ poems that are based on little known facts about our 16th president. I love how each poem is framed by colorful pictures that contain descriptive features that resemble animation stills. Illustrator David Szalay captured the essence of Lincoln and the time period Lincoln lived. One of my favorite poems is titled, “Best Advice: Why Not Whiskers?” Did you know that an eleven year old girl wrote to Lincoln and suggested he grow a beard in order to possibly earn more votes? Meyer crafted an easy-to-read poem that summarizes this interesting fact about Lincoln that readers will enjoy. Another highlight of the book is reading the sidebars containing information further delving into the topic of the poem. Students will want to learn more about Lincoln, Frederick Douglass, the Civil War, and more after reading this supplemental information next to each poem. Finally, Meyer has developed educational activities that coordinate with the poems in her book that can be easily implemented in any classroom or library. This book is a superlative piece of literature!

What a clever way to present such fun facts about our “superlative” 16th president. This book introduces the reader to sides of Abraham Lincoln most of us have never known about. The author, Eileen Meyer, uses a variety of poetic styles to present all sorts of trivia as well as the important historical events of his life and presidency. Each poem is on one page with the opposing page featuring illustrations by Dave Szalay which bring the poems to life. Additionally each page features a short paragraph providing well researched details about the topic. The topics range from fun things such as his beard and how his children ran rampant around the White House to the Emancipation Proclamation, his friendship with Frederick Douglass, and the Gettysburg Address. These poems are not at all repetitive. Each has its own distinctive style and meter, but all with a very lyrical style. The visual layout of the poems are each different as well. The artwork and the lyricism make this a perfect “picture” book to read aloud to younger children; these attributes as well as the fun historical trivia make this a perfect book for elementary school children to fall in love with Abe (read the book to find out more about this nickname and why we refer to him as Abe rather than Abraham!).

Some 15,000 books have been written about Abraham Lincoln, more than any person in history except Jesus Christ. With that much already in print, is it possible to come up with a unique vision?

Eileen Meyer has done just that with The Superlative A. Lincoln, a poetry collection for young readers that showcases the many ways our sixteenth president was “Simply Superlative” (of the best or highest quality.)

Whimsically illustrated by Dave Szalay, each of the nineteen poems in this collection reveals a facet of Lincoln’s superlative nature, ranging from “Biggest Dreamer” and “Best Yarn-Spinner” to “Strongest Conviction” and “Greatest Speech.” Charming, humorous, and fun, these poems take us on a delightful journey from the early days of Lincoln’s childhood to the most challenging moments of his presidency.

Meyer’s meticulous research shows in the unearthing of little-known facts and excellent history notes on each poem. This superlative collection is sure to delight both old and new fans of our sixteenth president. A five-star rating from this reviewer!

A fantastic book of poetry and prose that offers interesting, well researched information about our 16th President that is new to me or I simply have been forgotten over time. As a retired teacher, I find this a juicy book that offers many interdisciplinary opportunities for language arts, social studies, science and math. It is a wonderful medium to learn about A. Lincoln and his legacy and impact on the world.
It also promotes positive qualities of humbleness, perseverance, and kindness in a man still revered today - a perfect lesson for young readers. The illustrations are thoughtful, as well as thought-provoking, and show great facial expressions.
This book is a great teaching tool.

There are delightful surprises for a reader who thinks they’ve learned everything there is about President Abraham Lincoln. Eileen Meyer has blended poetic rhyme with informative prose on every page, offering not only new information about the Superlative A. Lincoln, but a real “feel” for Lincoln as a person that children can relate to. Dave Szalay’s artwork makes gorgeous pages to compliment the familiar long and lean character of a president that deserves admiration and respect. With added positive messages for young readers to “Be Superlative—Be like Abe,” it’s a book kids will wear out reading and re-reading. I look forward to having it on my shelf to share with others.

What a delight! From the clever yet accessible poetry to David Szalay’s timeless illustrations – this book is wonderful. We think we “know” Abe Lincoln, but Eileen Meyer creates a lovely world that truly humanizes the man. The poems tell different stories in a fun and warm way. My favorite is “Most Surprising Friendship” about unlikely friends Abe & Frederick Douglass – 2 very different men who cared about the greater good - shines through in the deft composition of the poem's layout and each and every word.

Living in Illinois and visiting his presidential museum, I already knew lot about our 16th President. However, I learned so many cool details in a whimsical way! Children will love the engaging poems and illustrations. I especially enjoyed a poem from the perspective of Abe’s stovepipe hat. I didn’t know he used the top of his hat to write notes. Author Eileen Meyer found interesting tidbits that will draw kids in, reading this book over and over again. She makes history super fun!

The Superlative A. Lincoln is a collection of poems that highlight what our sixteenth president was best (or most) at. Abraham Lincoln has been the subject of many books for children, but this book gives readers a fresh perspective. The combination of lyrical language and engaging sidebars makes it a great read aloud. Many of the poems focus on aspects of Lincoln's life that aren't as widely known. Did you know Abraham Lincoln is in the Wrestling Hall of Fame? The colorful illustrations complement the text perfectly. This is a must-have for any classroom or library.

This such a fun, interesting, educational and eye-appealing book! I learned more about Abe Lincoln than I ever imagined. The poems and artwork draw the reader into the scene of being right there with Abe and learning the “inside” stories. The poems are creative and full of history. The book was obviously well-researched and the explanations below the poems provide additional historical information for the reader if desired. The poems begin with Abe’s boyhood and move chronologically and there is a timeline of his life at the end which is also quite helpful. This book is good for people of all ages, from 3 years old thru grandparent! The author includes a page of applications to spur on the readers to think how THEY are superlative, as well as pages of recommended resources and additional books to read. There is something here for everyone! This book should be in every home, library, school, even nursing home. It’s a really fun way to learn and enjoy history.

Lincoln makes a great classroom mentor text. Dave Szalay’s dynamic illustrations of Lincoln from boyhood to adulthood compliment Meyer’s words perfectly, bringing a new perspective to this legendary figure.

BUYING ADVISORY: EL, MS - ADVISABLE

AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE

Abraham Lincoln is a towering figure in American history. In this illustrated book of poems, Meyer introduces various stories about Lincoln and highlights aspects of his character. Each poem comes with a small note, as well, offering more historical information. The key focus on superlatives is a nice touch to tie in with a language curriculum. There is a nice timeline, author's note and bibliography in the back.

This was a difficult book to characterize but a fun and quick book to read. Its not fully a biography, but you get a lot of good info in each poem and note. This would be a great book for teachers to utilize in combining history and language arts lessons (the best way to teach them both!). I think fans of American History will also enjoy it simply for what it is.
