This was my first book from a publisher widget, the publishers added they felt this was my type of book.

So firstly thank you to the publishers, and of course Net Galley, and the publisher.

Next I apologise, as I appreciate being offered this book, but a first book that I tried to read but had to give up, I tried very hard to keep going, eventually I had to give up.

The return of the cutting-edge thriller series Net Force, created by Tom Clancy and Steve Pieczenik and written by Jerome Preisler, but no to my liking.

The number one threat to our nation’s security is in cyberspace. The new US president wants to tackle the urgent problem head-on and launches a top secret line of defense: Net Force. But before the organisation can be announced, the country is hit by an unprecedented, two-pronged terror attack.

Their failure could mean global catastrophe. Success may lead them to become the highest-level security agency in the United States.

Yes the story is all there, but lost on the flipping around of the story lines, the many different characters, the basis of the story, exhausting and predictable.

Maybe If I stuck to it it may have grown on me, but felt my time was too valuable and to start on the next book, as under so much pressure with so many books through publishers, authors and Net Galley, as I try to catch up (apologies Net Galley).

Apologies to the author, publishers, just sadly not my type of thriller.

Net Force: Dark Web is a lengthy novel (almost 700 pages) cursed with a complex, multi-faceted plot. With all of the plot points on so many different fronts it develops very slowly. Along with much less character development than I would have liked to see this makes the first-half of the book slow moving and tedious at times. The second-half moves much faster. There’s much more action and it becomes much easier to turn pages despite still having a difficult time identifying with any of the characters. And then it just ends. It clearly appears to be setting up for a sequel, but after suffering through 700 pages I really wanted some more resolution. Entertaining at times, but it consistently left me wanting more.

I was fortunate to receive an advance copy of Net Force: Dark Web while at ThrillerFest this past summer. I had no idea what to expect. I started reading it in the airport waiting for my flight home and couldn’t stop. Over the course of the next few days, I devoured this 700-page thriller. I was floored. Moving quickly and deftly across continents, the novel spins an amazing story filled with believable characters, situations and their consequences, good and bad. Jerome Preisler is truly an amazing storyteller. I’m looking forward to more in the series.

I'll be honest - I struggled to finish this book. While the story is compelling and packed with action, it gets a bit slow at some points. It's like I enjoyed more the idea of the book - a cyberattack and a special Net Force trying to unveil it - than the actual book itself. But if you like this type of action stories, you might like this book and appreciate it more than I did.

Net Force: Dark Web, created by Tom Clancy and written by Jerome Preisler, is a technothriller set in the year 2023. Terrorists have figured out how to use unprotected smart products to commit their acts of terror against the United States. The president, foreseeing this inevitability, has been trying to form Net Force, a cabinet-level security force that uses the most advanced technology to protect us from such attacks. On the day and in the place that the president is announcing this new security force, an attack hits New York throwing the city into chaos and leaving little doubt to the necessity of the Net Force.

Favorite character :
Kali Alcazar the Outlier – she is a very complex character whose loyalties are always in question. She is smart, no-nonsense, and able to take down large bodyguards in a single blow…okay, that a little bit of an exaggeration, but she did take down a large bodyguard. Most importantly, she makes the right choices in hard situations.

What I Like About Net Force Dark Web

It is exceptionally well written. The dialogue flows naturally. There is just the right balance of dialogue and exposition, enabling the reader to maintain a fast pace. The flow from various parts of the story is logical and easy to follow. And, the story stays focused.

The story contains lots of near misses that keep you guessing and the pages flipping. This is an essential attribute for the genre and because the novel is so long. I was grateful that even though the book is pretty weighty in size, it’s still a compelling read, and I didn’t feel like I was reading over 700 pages.

The story is about technology, so there is lots of tech jargon. Fortunately, it is written in such a way that it is easy to understand. And, the technology in the story definitely adds a cool factor.

The topic of the story is timely. With all that is going on in the news lately, like concerns over other countries interfering in US elections by using the internet, readers can easily connect to this story and recognize the potential of it.

What I Wish About Net Force Dark Web

I wish the ending had been more conclusive. It ends on a ”to be continued” note, and I would have loved to have a few of the storylines wrapped up for the current story. I don’t want to say too much about this because I don’t want to reveal any spoilers.

To Read or Not to Read

Net Force Dark Web is an excellent read for people who like technothrillers or just thrillers in general. It was recommended to me because I love Jack Ryan on Amazon Prime, and I think that was a pretty accurate recommendation.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

The Review

An exciting relaunch of a series co-created by icons Tom Clancy and Steve Pieczenik, Net Force: Dark Web is an exciting thriller that keeps readers on the edge of their seat throughout the entirety of the novel. Full of action from the book’s first pages, the story is equal parts narrative and character development, giving readers plenty to engage with throughout the novel.

Employing the same beloved military action, espionage and thriller aspects of any good Tom Clancy novel and incorporating modern day technological warfare and diving into how intimately technology has become a part of our everyday lives, the author does a brilliant job of analyzing our dependence on technology and the next era of terrorism and security around the world. As technology and our society evolves, so to will those seeking to use the good aspects of technology for their own nefarious purposes.

The Verdict

A well-written, lengthy yet action-packed and engaging read. Author Jerome Preisler has done a marvelous job of creating a cast of characters that feel real and personal enough for readers to feel connected to, like one protagonist named Kali, who’s story evolves greatly from the first page of this novel all the way to it’s end. With the United States facing a dangerous new threat, with government officials in the crosshairs and cyberthreats everywhere, it’s up to a new elite task force to stop the threat before its too late. Find out for yourself why this is the next chapter of an exciting new action-thriller series by preordering your copy of Jerome Preisler’s novel “Net Force: Dark Web” today!

A Technothriller That Could Happen Today

A devastating cyberattack cripples the US just as President Focillo is set to announce the creation of a cabinet level group, Net Force, to deal with the cyberthreats posed by all the non-secure device in the US. She knows that the nation’s number one threat will undoubtedly come from cyberattacks, but she has not been able to persuade Congress or the skeptical intelligence agencies of the seriousness of the threat.

This is a very detailed look at cyberattacks. It is closely written, packed with information, but it is easy to read because the author keeps the technical detail at a manageable level for the average reader. The plot is complex with plenty of action and the cast of characters very large. However, I found it easy to follow. The major characters are threaded through the action with chapters devoted to scenes in other countries and organizations.

One of my favorite characters is Kali, she appears in the opening of the novel. She’s young, but she has an obvious skill in cybertechnology. She’s tough, able to cleverly use judo to disable a strong man. She also wants to maintain her independence.

The setting moves through various countries. Each area is well described. You could almost be there and the characters are well developed so you feel as if you know them. My only real criticism is that the ending felt unfinished. I suspect that’s because another book is planned.

If you enjoy technothrillers, this is a good one. It’s long, but it keeps your interest.

I received this book from Harper Collins for this review.

A cyber “Net Force” intelligence team is put to the test before it even has an official beginning. The country is attacked and its up to the Net Force team to uncover not one but two plots of deceptions, with lots of twists and turns on the way and the threat of chemical warfare.
This was a 3.5 star read for me. I found the plot slow going with an extremely slow build but in the end, I was invested in the outcome…hence the 3.5 stars. Net Force had a lot of potential but the extremely descriptive writing style made the story lag.

I received this ARC copy of Net Force: Dark Web from HARLEQUIN – Trade Publishing - Hanover Square Press. This is my honest and voluntary review. Net Force: Dark Web is set for publication Nov. 26, 2019.

I tried unsuccessfully for several years to get through this book. The first few pages intrigued me. I am interested and want to know more. Within the next few chapters, too many characters were introduced and they were meaningless. There is zero character development of them. If this were a movie, I think it would be easier because I can easily see the people and make connections.

There is also a lot of techno jargon which I could care less about. Sadly, I'm in the IT business so whilst I could follow along, it was tedious and boring for me to read about it. I pushed forth and around the 48% mark, probably 300+ pages in, I realized this was too much work and I wasn't enjoying this book. I think my stance may be different if it was a movie. I do not recommend this book. It either needs to be severely edited with less players or just developed into a TV series, Netflix original or movie.

Full of action right from the book’s first pages, the story is equal parts narrative and character development, giving readers plenty to engage with throughout the novel.

This is a wonderfully crafted action-packed story with twists and turns that keep you on the edge of your seat right to the last page. The author’s insightful look into hacking and cyber warfare is timely and on point.

In true Tom Clancy style, the author has a good grasp on modern day technological warfare and diving into how intimately technology has become a part of our everyday lives. As well, he does a brilliant job of analyzing our dependence on technology and the next era of terrorism and security around the world.

This was the first book I have read by this author. I enjoy a good spy/action thriller, but I found the book very hard to follow because of all the different story lines and characters.

I also found it difficult to understand with all the technical computer terms used throughout the book.

The writing style was different and it took a while to get used to. It made for slow reading and on a book with over 700 pages, was difficult to keep reading.

If you’re into hi-tech thrillers, this might be your kind of story, but it was not for me.

Review: I thought the overall plot was really good and the writing was pretty good. However, unfortunately, that's all I liked about this book.

I thought the book was way way way to lengthy for what it should have been. The book had too much going on in my opinion. The book pacing was really slow too and I felt like I was running a marathon reading this. I felt mentally exhausted and I was so confused throughout the whole book. I really thing it should have been split up into multiple books or something because how it is isn't working for me lol.

Verdict: Not my cup of tea.

Likes: Writing was well done. Plot was interesting. HIVE with Audrey Hepburn’s voice as she simulates a very real seeming virtual reality. The plot seemed so real! A cyber threat is really scary. The fact that a terrorist group could potentially take control of our devices, is terrifying.

Dislikes: It was very slow. It didn’t pick up until over half way through the book. I also didn’t connect with any of the characters.

Book: Net Force: Dark Web
Author: Jerome Preisler
Rating: 2 Out of 5 Stars

I would like to thank the publisher, Hanover Square Press, for sending me an ARC.

I am actually really upset with myself that I didn’t like this one as much as I thought I would. I mean, this isn’t a genre that I normally read and I thought it would do me some good to venture out. The summary sounded great and I know a lot of people are big fans of this series. Sadly though, this just didn’t do it for me.

I found the characters to be really difficult to connect to. Don’t get me wrong, they were developed very well, but there was just something about them that made it really hard for me to relate to them. I have read a lot books with very bright characters, so that wasn’t the problem. They just didn’t seem like read people is what I’m getting out. It was like the author was trying to bring them in for us, but failing to make them seem so very real. It was like they were completely disconnected is what I’m getting out.

The plot was kind of a slow burn. It seemed like it was going to move very quickly, but it didn’t. there was some aspects of the plot that I really enjoyed. All of the tech and government stuff was really engaging to me, but the other parts of it, just didn’t do it for me. I know this has a lot going on in it, but it felt a little uneven to me. I did like that everything was a little open ended at the end. This is a series, so I do like having a reason to read the next book-which I don’t think I will be doing so.

I really don’t know. I wanted to like it, but I just really couldn’t get into it. I think I was just the wrong reader for this book. I do think that a lot of other people will really enjoy this one.

This book comes out on November 26, 2019.

As an Australian I often read Yankee novels expecting a lot of flag waving and godspeak and this novel contained those things. Ho hum.
However, the first moments of this intriguing tome are set in Malta with Kali, who is of interest to roving US global policemen, maybe for her "hacking activities", and we witness her run in with Carmody, covered in tattoos and often at a loss at to what constitutes reality.
Before you know it we are in Soto's office where Stella is setting up an on-line steal through the Internet, the "Dark Web" of the title, in cahoots with her brother Emil and his guru Dragan, a former student of Foreign Minister Kem, who seems intent on overthrowing his boss, Prince Negassa, on behalf of his own tribe.
Meanwhile Carmody's boss, Carol, who advised the woman President of the US, Fucillo, to appoint her ex Husband Leo as the head of Net Force. Harris, as he is known, must deal with the creator and the leader of a new virtual State, Cybernation.

Or so I read.

I loved this book. It is about the web and the many ways it can be used to create change. The web is an agent of change, and this author has aimed his story at aged lovers of intrigue like myself, in an inclusive manner, by venturing outside the USA. He also picks up techno geeks, hipsters, clubbers, and with the Technologie Vampiri introduces an element, beyond the norm, as the centre of global dominance.

As I read the Epilogue I was wondering when the next edition will be released. Did Harris survive the bomb in the Tesla? Why did Carmody let Dragan go? Will Kali get a job with Net Force? Can Negassa regain control? and who is the Arch Villain, the leader of Cybernation?

In a time when cyber security is at risk and notices of hacks are world wide we get a book by these authors. I got this book because I saw the authors and just knew I would love the book. Fr some reason I had a hard time getting into it. I mean I love the thrills and chills, the hunt, the twist, but there are so many sub characters who are important to the story that I kept getting lost. There is a ton of action and little details which need to be tracked to stay on top of it all but it was almost overwhelming. It is a slow start but that's also because everything is being set up and put in place for what comes next. Just make it through that and you'l be ready for the rest. It's a good read so don't get me wrong and it's most definitely a read worth the time and brain power to get through it but you might need to make some notes. Either way there's no denying the story is well written and researched from these authors that do spy stories that keep the blood pumping and overcome all the obstacles.

Wow! Tech can be hard to write about understandably. I'm not tech-y, but thought I understood a lot of the tech scenarios in this book. They were explained clearly. I'm sure this is the first of a series, though, as there were a lot of unanswered questions and loose ends by the end of the book.

I wish this book had focused a bit more on just a few characters, instead of some of the brief intros of the experiences of some, without making them an actual character in the storyline. I kept reading in hopes of more characters tying together, but they didn't.

By the end of the book, I had a few favorite characters, who I'd expect to see in a follow-up. I'll certainly keep an eye out and still want to hear more of the story, but was a bit disappointed with the lack of closure in what I read in this book.

I was a fan of the original Net Force series and so was delighted to discover it has been revived. This series has a much different “feel” but is equally enjoyable. The computer/cyber elements were understandably presented yet are very cutting edge. I enjoyed the crime/mystery elements as well. It had a complex plot that all pulls together excitingly. The attack on New York was chilling. A someone with a disability I also appreciated seeing a heroic character with autism realistically presented in the mix.

All told a rich and exciting tale.

An action packed, fast paced, gripping and entertaining novel that kept me on the edge till the end.
I loved the well crafted and engrossing plot, the well thought cast of characters and the solid mystery.
It's the first book I read in this series and won't surely be the last.
It was a fun read, highly recommended.

I received a copy of this book for a fair and honest review. I have been really getting on to books that are about anything in cyberspace. This said dark web in the title and I was like I have to have this. I like the thrill that it gave me. This book had me on the edge of my seat. It is all about cyber crimes and there are attacks against the US. There is a whole division called Net Force to stop or prevent other attacks. It had me not wanting to put the book down.

4/5. Jerome Preisler has done to cyber tech what Clancy did to military hardware. Fascinating level of detail into how a cyber attack could cripple society. Spiced with some interesting and likeable characters on both sides of the dark web divide. And a super plot. This is what happens when an attack that starts against the U.S. president sweeps across the globe, swallowing most tech-dependent systems. (i.e. all systems these days) up into their wake.

Too many story lines whose only purpose was to get you to buy the next book, which I'll skip to avoid the same trap.

Another reason I'm done is the nightclub gunfight at the end of the book, where several people were killed and Carmody has the Wolf in custody but ends up letting him walk free to help one of his in injured fighters to safety.
Ok I get the loyalty struggle but why wouldn't he just put a bullet in the Wolf & leave. After breaking their Romanian agreement, illegally entering in the building, killing several people in a gunfight,
Carmody knew this was the Wolf who caused mass chaos in the US, tried to kill the President, succeeded in killing many US citizens. and who knows what else he had in store.

I think 2 star was generous.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

There's no bigger war crime in literature than the reboot of Net Force by Jerome Preisler. This is shocking since he created one of my favorite franchises in the Clancyverse Power Plays. One has to wonder why the publisher didn't hand him his old franchise again.

The Net Force reboot comes at you with multiple books in one and a legion of characters sold as though they will pay off in the long run, but it's quite evident within a few pages that it's not going to live up to the hype.

Jerome Preisler stated in an interview that he wanted to "Make the fans mad" by drastically changing characters from the previous series written by Steve Perry; he felt Alex Michael was too Alpha male and leaned in hard to make him into a Beta male, and it shows. Alex is now a flower-sniffing soft male whose only true love is his dog.

John Howard is painted as a monster who might or might not end up being a total d bag. Jerome Pressler really did his homework on how to piss off fans.

But sadly, as he masterfully did this, his own characters he brought into the series fall face first into the concrete floor. The strong female lead known as Kali is just a massive rip-off of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, with the CIA handler who's out to get her, playing the future love interest of Kali.

Leo Harris is Alex Michael's or a Steve Day monster mash. That's one character that stands out and makes you chuckle, the series would have been fine with him in a lead role.

Another is Bryan, an autistic computer hacker working for Net Force. The only problem is that we never get to feel invested with any of these characters since Jerome Preisler decided to play hopscotch with each freaking chapter. Sometimes, you'll go through chapters without even knowing what happened to those characters that were just mentioned. Then we'll bring in new characters from different countries, back to your old character for a few pages, and then back to something else.

Net Force felt cold. No life. No connection. JUST LIKE SOCIAL MEDIA!

Oh, there's also a villain in there, too, besides Jerome Preisler.

One might say well, it's just the first book; I'm sure it'll get better in the second. Yeah, I read the second book; you spend time with Kali, and the actual net force you once loved is pushed to the middle of the book. A lazy cliffhanger from the first book isn't told until 158 pages of the book, and the payoff is just a shrug. Jerome Preisler does lean off the Beta Michael's and lets the character be; Howard is pushed to a more critical role; one has to wonder if Jerome didn't hear the fallout online and decided to play nice.

Still, it doesn't do enough to push or grab your attention to read the 3rd or 4th installment of the book.

The major problem that Jerome Preisler fell into was believing his own hype. He went into this thinking if I push enough buttons, maybe I'll get a reaction, which will lead to major success! Yeah, that didn't happen, and the author lost the most important thing ever: THE STORY!

Jerome Preisler dives into the A. I and Transhumanism WEF type of logic, like most Cyberpunk stories, but the formula doesn't win any points, to be honest.

It's a shame what Net Force became under Jerome Preisler, a franchise that has major legs in this battleground of A.I and the corruption that lies within it, this could have been a new groundbreaking tale if done right and perhaps under a better author, not one who was happy to gush about his experience to his bank teller, Jerome Pressler, really did say that in an interview.

I'm giving the Net Force reboot a 2 out of 5. I'll stick to the original.

I was really excited to see this story available from HQN for review. I’d been reading a lot of romance lately and needed a break. I thought this thriller would be it, unfortunately it was not. I couldn’t really get into the story. It was confusing at times, with all the subplots and characters. I’d have to keep going back to find out which characters were with what subplot. You’re lead through so many dark alleys, countries, and streets in each different one that I felt I should have made a map of the characters. The story gets convoluted and the characters get murky after a while.
I should have stopped reading it when I realized the headache it was going to induce with the different stories all trying to coalesce into one. I was told many times when I would have to stop reading, that I should DNF but I didn’t, I stuck through to the very end and I was not happy with the ending either. It just ends. You read just over 700 pages (YES 704 pages per Amazon!) and the story just stops, but there’s really no ending. I won’t be reading any more of this series, it’s just not for me. There’s little character development and it takes entirely too long for the story to pick up the pace. With so many subplots and characters that was brought in, I don’t think there’s anyway to do the story justice. And the story could be a good one. With today’s society, everything from the microchips in our pets, to our mobile devices, to our debit/credit cards, everything is attached to the web. If something bad gets in, it could knock everything out. This book goes through that possibility.
This book is set a couple years into the future, and there’s a lot of technical aspects to it. I would suggest this book to someone who normally reads international thrillers heavy with technology. If you’re looking for a nice, relaxing, take your mind off of work read, this 704 page behemoth of a story might not be for you.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC of Net Force: Dark Web in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

The Gist

Net Force: Dark Web steers through the intricate world of cyber threats with intensity. I have never read a Net Force story before this one, and I have never been very interested in it, but the synopsis caught my attention.

The Details

The novel presents a gripping narrative, filled with the expected technological intricacies and fast-paced action that, I assume, fans of the series would appreciate and anticipate. The Net Force team faces challenges that reflect the evolving landscape of cyber warfare, and the characters remain a highlight, showcasing diverse skills and perspectives.

However, Dark Web occasionally falters in its balance between technical details and narrative progression. For readers less familiar with cybersecurity concepts, the novel can feel dense and at times overwhelming, impacting the overall engagement with the plot. The pacing, while generally brisk, can become bogged down by information dumps.

Character development, while present, doesn't reach any great depth. Some protagonists feels more like archetypes than fully fleshed-out individuals. Their personal struggles lack emotional resonance.

The Verdict

Overall, Net Force: Dark Web offers an engaging techno-thriller experience. However, it might not fully satisfy both avid fans of the series and newcomers. While the narrative remains compelling, the balance between technicality and accessibility could be better managed.

I was provided an ARC of this book by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. I listened to the final production copy of the audiobook.

I found the premise of this book to be very interesting. I thought this was a standalone in a long running series, but it definitely felt like I should have known the characters and their backstories going into this book as well as some of the plotlines. I'm not sure if that is the case, but it felt that way when I was reading/listening to the book. I don't think I would have taken the ARC had I known that it were part of such an established series. I feel that way because it doesn't end as a standalone. It ends as though you need to read the next book to find out what happens next.

Again I found the plot to be very interesting, but I lost interest because there were far too many plotlines and characters to keep track of. This made the pacing very slow and the book very long. I expected this to have a much faster pace considering it was a cyber security thriller. While in reality cyber attacks probably have many more people involved than we meet in this book, I think I would have enjoyed this had I not met every single player in the game. I would have preferred more developed characters, and perhaps they are more developed throughout the series as this is book 12 and I've missed out. I also would have preferred a more focused plot, this just jumped around too much for my taste and it was hard to keep track of who was who and what they were doing.

For full disclosure, the publisher contacted me via Netgalley regarding this book. I love a good mystery or thriller so I thought, “Why not?!” What sounded like a promising premise did not turn out to be a book for me.

In my opinion, this book suffers from a whole lot of too much all around. The point of view changes constantly and rapidly. I lost track of the number of people’s points of view I read from but my best guess would be AT LEAST 15-20 people. The story still could have effectively been told even with editing this down to make it clearer for the reader.

On top of having everyone and their mother’s point of view, there was endless details, much of which was unnecessary or was simply put in to get a reaction out of the reader (and not the kind of reaction I want). I work in a somewhat investigative space and understand how incredibly complex a good crime scheme is… but there are again ways this could have been edited down to streamline and still have the same impact, the same story.

There were a couple of redeeming moments, such as when all of the information thrown at you chapter after chapter finally pulls the puzzle together. And there’s a female U.S. President (finally). But I barely made it to those points.

Overall, this is a rare two star read for me.

Thank you to Harlequin and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book. I have voluntarily read this book and the review expresses my own personal opinion.
