On the point of leaving Miss Bell’s School for Young Ladies, Adelaide Elliot ought to be delighted, but she is unlikely to see her good friends Caroline, Jo and Penelope ever again. Orphaned, and with her brother away serving King and Country, she has no money and no prospects, except to enter into service. The only post she is offered is as a governess at a country estate far away in Yorkshire, which feels like the ends of the earth.

Major Robert Fielding, known to Society as the Bachelor Beau, revels in his single state…until he becomes the improbable guardian of a compatriot’s two young sons. Not knowing what to do with two small boys, he decides to hire a youthful governess for them, assuming they will love females as much as he does. What can possibly go wrong?

Elizabeth Johns

Like many writers, Elizabeth Johns was first an avid reader, though she was a reluctant convert. It was Jane Austen's clever wit and unique turn of phrase that hooked Johns when she was "forced" to read Pride and Prejudice for a school assignment. She began writing when she ran out of her favorite author’s books and decided to try her hand at crafting a Regency romance novel. Her journey into publishing began with the release of Surrender the Past, book one of the Loring-Abbott Series. Johns makes no pretensions to Austen’s wit but hopes readers will perhaps laugh and find some enjoyment in her writing.
Johns attributes much of her inspiration to her mother, a retired English teacher. During their last summer together, Johns would sit on the porch swing and read her stories to her mother, who encouraged her to continue writing. Busy with multiple careers, including a professional job in the medical field, author and mother of small children, Johns squeezes in time for reading whenever possible.

England 1814. Kisses only romance.

Robert left the Army as a Captain & Adelaide "Addy"
became governess to his 2 wild boy wards @ his
country home. Addy & the 2 boys, smeared in soot,
arrived unannounced @ Robt's London home, after
the boys unintentionally started a fire by stuffing
pillows in chimneys. Not bad boys, just mischievous.

It turned out the H was the commanding officer of
the h's brother, Phillip, missing in action. The story
had seriousness RE Phil's fate & light-heartedness
about the boys.

The wealthy hero & his aunty sponsored a season for
18 YO Addy, sweet and wise beyond her yrs. But Addy
questioned decisions & didn't accept all as is IE the
hero lived in a different home than his wards at the
start. At social events Addy was reunited w/ several
finishing school friends, Pen, Caro, Jo, all w/ unclear
financial status, all in temporary abodes, all with un-
decided futures.

I liked this novella & felt the push-pull between the
strong-willed leads. If only this reader had 100-200
more pages with these folks. Pre-ordered Pen's story,
avail in 2 days.

1.5 stars.

Terribly generic in every way, with characters lacking any depth or even distinguishing characteristics ("tawny eyes" do not a personality make), prose lacking any style, and a plot with no real tension. There is no chemistry between the heroine and hero, the children are plot moppets of the most obvious kind, and the Regency trappings are paper thin. While there is nothing here that is grossly objectionable, there's also nothing interesting or memorable. I won't be searching out another book by this author.

Lacking a plot; simplistic; see last sentence for other authors

I love Jane Austen, Georgette Heyer, etc and have read probably hundreds of regency (clean) novels. This is the first novel I have read by this author who I know has written many novels. If I hadn’t known this was a published book I would have guessed this was a summer “fun project “ of a sophomore in high school based on the absence of any discernible plot.

After reading quite awhile I was beginning to wonder when a plot would develop—-almost nothing had happened yet. The heroine is admirable but everything else was “thin” but I was still hopeful. I decided to check how far along I was on my Kindle book and was astonished to see that I was 93% through the book! The plot is a young woman becomes the governess of two ill behaved boys and after a few weeks brings them to London to their guardians home, the guardian ( who has vowed never to marry) is attracted to the governess, upon seeing her, and after attending 1 ball (1 dance) get married in record time. No exaggeration. Very disappointed. I myself have respect for the author’s effort as I could never write a novel. May I suggest something by Mimi Matthews, Julie Klassen, Mary Kingswood, Martha Keyes, Sarah Ladd. Better character and plot development.

New series

I like the premise of this series - a group of friends leaving finishing school tho make their way in the world. I am also intrigued by the intoxicating of a group of soldiers who formed a brotherhood during the Napoleonic wars. While the writing was well done my biggest frustration was with the two main characters. They spend a great deal of time persuading themselves that they have no romantic feelings for each other - then bam - in the last chapter they suddenly realize they are in love and should marry. It was a bit too contrived and lacked the romantic tension that makes for an unforgettable love story.

Started it ... about 68%, then skipped to the ending. The author has several anachronisms and grammar errors that detracted from the story. With a good editor (one who is familiar with the Regency period!), I think the story could be a good one. At the moment ... not really worth my time, unfortunately.

The Governess is the 1st book on The Ladies of Miss Bell's Finishing School series, it is almost feels the 2nd book in The Brethren in Arms series, also by Elizabeth Johns. I love it when characters cross over, because it makes me care more for the outcome. Adelaide, the governess, is the sister to one of the Brethren. She has not heard from her brother in over a year, and since their parents died years earlier, she has not had any contact with extended family either. She believes that being a governess is her only option in life.
Robert, a very wealthy and established member of the ton, has recently acquired two wards. As he is a staunch bachelor, he thinks that he can leave the two young boys at his country estate with a governess and his duty is done.
Adelaide feels differently as to what his duties to his wards are. The sparks from the fire the boys set at the country manor are not the only ones that fly when Adelaide packs up the soot covered boys and takes them straight to Robert's home in London. Things get even hotter when he realizes who she is.
The book is excellent and I love how it is the bridge between two very promising series. Seeing the Brethren in this book made my heart happy.

I have always enjoyed Elizabeth Johns's stories but she has definitely stepped up her game and I devoured four of her books in a week's time.

The Governess was a book I wasn't expecting this tory to consume me as it did. It was a quick fun read but it was also a story that drew me in from the first page and I actually never wanted to leave this world that the author wrote.

Adelaide was this wonderfully spunky heroine. She had a lot of pain and trouble in her life but she was a fighter and wasn't going to let anyone keep her down or take advantage of her. Adelaide's life is in turmoil and she is forced to take a job as a governess, which she believes will destroy the dreams she had for her life.

Adelaide's job puts her in the path of Major Fielding (her employer), who is used to living life on his own terms. Adelaide's upends his life and challenges him at every turn. And what first turns into and announce quickly turns to intrigue and fascination.

Fielding and Adelaide had great witty banter and excellent chemistry and it was fun to watch their relationship developed from enemies, to friends and eventually love.

A clean story.
I found Robert very self centred. He has become guardian to two young boys, sons of his former
commanding officer who he respected. He sends them straight to his country estate and never meets them, despite losing his parents at an early and understanding the feeling of loss. He is very brusque when Adelaide writes to him as their governess. He then finds she is the sister to one of his group of soldiers, who had all agreed to look out for each other and their families, which apparently they took seriously. However, despite knowing her brother is missing he never bothered to even find out where she was or her situation. As I said more interested in himself than the commitments and promises he has. Adelaide quite rightly found him infuriating yet suddenly commits herself to him.
There were also some americanisms ie ‘gifted’ instead of ‘gave’.
So the story is readable and pleasant. I think it’s a 3.5 but went 3 as Robert does not behave as the type of person he is supposed to be.

Adelaide Elliot takes a position as a governess because it is the only path open to her. With no dowry and her only brother missing, she knows marriage is unlikely. When the guardian of her two charges, Mr. Robert Fielding, discovers who she is, everything changes.

I have mixed feelings about this book. It was well-written, had an interesting set-up, and was clean in content. However, I didn't find the characters to be particularly memorable. Adelaide annoyed me, though I can't pinpoint why. For the most part, her reaction to her circumstances seemed realistic. maybe it was her extreme stubbornness that put me off.

Mr. Fielding-or, should I say, Mr. I-Will-Always-Be-A-Bachelor-was not much better. I understood his attraction to Adelaide because she was pretty. Love, in such a short time, when they did nothing but argue, seemed like a stretch.

For Regency readers looking for a new series, this wouldn't be an awful choice. I'm just not sure I'll continue.

The Governess by Elizabeth Johns
Ladies of Miss Bell's Finishing School Series Book One
Adelaide Elliot has graduated from finishing school and will be heading to a life as a governess. Her three friends will be heading to London for their Season. Being an orphan with no means, she has no choice.

Robert Fielding is a determined bachelor. Wondering how men can fall into the marriage trap. Not him. He's found himself the guardian of two young wards, but hires a governess to care for them. And doesn't expect to meet them...and their beautiful governess...so soon. He soon finds his bachelor life changing as he feels he has three lives to watch over.

This story is also connected to the Brethren in Arms Series. With both Robert and Adelaide having connections to those men. Loved the story. Page-turner as usual.

3.5 stars - A Cinderella Regency

The story is simple and light, but doesn't pretend to anything else so I rate it based on its aspirations - not a lack thereof.

It's sweet and succeeds in developing the relationships between Adelaide, Robert and the children, but barely. Still, the familial construct linking this to the other stories & their characters lends it some depth and helps it to avoid open superficiality. And I will admit to now having some interest in reading the others' stories.

Clean romance level: passionate kissing

*I am not a Regency purist, however, for those who are, they will be bothered by a cricket game with the ladies in which ankles & calves are scandalously displayed. Additionally there are several instances of public displays of affection that would have been frowned upon regardless of the couple's married state

This is a cute and clean story!
I enjoyed the characters, Robert and Adelaide. They were fun to "get to know". I liked the fact that Adelaide was a strong and spunky character. In spite of what she is faced of being alone in a society that doesn't offer much in ways of taking care of herself, she is determined to make the most of what is there.
Robert is the returned soldier who is protecting his heart by being a hardened bachelor. He has seen so much and is determined to stay "safe".
I enjoyed the trouble caused by Robert's wards and Adelaide's charges.
I did feel the acknowledgment of Robert and Adelaide's feelings a bit quick in the end.
I look forward to the other books in the series.
This is the 1st in the series, but I felt like I missed a bit when the male characters were introduced... but I am sure will be understood more in the Brethren In Arms series.

Adelaide and Robert

Adelaide has taken a position of governess for a Mr. Fielding. She is unaware that he is single and that her charges are two boys! She is perplexed as to why he would hire a governess and not a tutor. When she meets the boys Freddy and Harry on her first day-within the first few moments-of her arrival their nurse quits! She has had enough of their shenanigans! So Adelaide does what she was told to do at Miss Bell's Finishing School, she sends a missive to her employer letting him know of the goings on at his home. Will Mr. Fielding respond favorably to her missive? What will happen next? Only one way to find out, read this great story by Elizabeth Johns.

Love

Once again, Elizabeth John's did an outstanding job on characters. I immediately liked Adelaide and Robert. The story flowed smoothly and and at a great pace. I could not put it down. It was great to read about Luke, Meg, Amelia, and Tobin. Definitely looking forward to reading more about the characters in this book and Phillip.
As always, I am looking forward to reading more books by this author. Elizabeth John's is extremely talented. I encourage everyone to read this book and all of her other books as well. Start with the Loring-Abbotts and you will not be disappointed.

Opposites attract

Robert and Adelaide have great chemistry! I personally would never want a relationship like this, but I sure love to read it. The banter and wit is a lot of fun. This is the start to a fun new series. I actually read the last book first and am now starting at the beginning. These 4 friends are very different, but have a great bond nonetheless. I loved Robert and his friends. I discovered their part of another series, Brothers in Arms. I'm anxious to read that series now as I have so many questions. I hope the other books come out soon. This was a fun opposites attract story.

First book in the new series Ladies of Miss Bell's Finishing School, it appears to be a prologue to Not Forgotten, 2nd in A Brethren in Arms series. After leaving school, with nowhere else to turn, Adelaide becomes a governess to two hyperactive terrors. After nearly burning the house down, Adelaide packs the boys up and returns them to their guardian in London. And that's where the real story, the romance and the adventure begins.

Ms. John's writing is wonderful, her characters are interesting and engaging. Her knowledge of annoying little boys is right on. I should know, I have brothers. These are not standalone books. I do recommend reading The Governess before Not Forgotten to get more background. Both books mentioned are recommended.

3.5 stars - Edit errors and slow start

This book had some edit errors and I had a hard time getting into the story. For such a short story there are a lot of characters, making it hard to really develop any single one character very strongly. I think the character development made the book harder for me to get into. I know that this is the beginning of a series so maybe the other books in the series will get better.

I was extremely disappointed in the ending. It ends abruptly with very little resolve for Adelaide's concern for her brother. The love between Adelaide and Mr. Fielding also came on quick and unexpected. One minute he can't stand her, the next minute he's jealous. He snaps at her and is frustrated she left the house to search for Freddy, and the next he's kissing her. He doesn't mention anything about holding her in such high regard, and then he's asking her to marry him. This book just seemed rushed through, and it left me feeling extremely disappointed.

A delightful read

I have read many of Elizabeth Johns’ later books, and as I made my way through The Governess I was reminded of various plots and characters from these. The storyline was captivating, making it a real page-turner, but at the same time I felt that at this stage of her career Johns was still feeling her way somewhat and had not yet perfected her craft. It says much for her as a writer that even though this is not her best book it was still a fabulous read. I look forward to the rest of the series.

I was intrigued from the beginning, always a fun scene when Adelaide met her employer covered in soot. I loved the whole book and finished it in 1 day. I gave it a 4 star because it should be longer as the story felt rushed. I loved seeing Robert's feelings change and loved the scene of their first kiss.

I can't wait to read the other stories in the series and hope we see snippets of Addy and Robert together.

“She was not about to beg to stay here with two hell-born imps and a self-important dandy.”

The cover is gorgeous! It is also unique. I haven’t seen it on ten other books too, so that was very appealing. The story had enough action for me to be entertained, and romance to keep me sighing and swooning rooting Adelaide and Robert to get their happily ever after. I loved the twists and turns that kept excited to turn the next page.

Not bad...but just missing something...

The Governess was short and sweet. It captured society life of the 19th century, however, it ended abruptly. Perhaps, more will come out about Phillip, in later volumes. I felt that the relationship between Adelaide and Robert was not fully explored. The climax felt a bit anticlimactic. I love the style of Elizabeth John's writing. I was just left wanting....well....more.

Another good book from Elizabeth Johns. I did like the tension that built up between Adelaide and Robert, it was very entertaining. They were attracted to one another from the start but could not act on it or admit to it. One of my favourite bits was when Robert’s aunt is teasing him When he is caught staring at Adelaide again (‘You should not stare at her as though she were a savoury piece of beefsteak,’) it made me chuckle. ❤️

This is a novella format, and that shorter length actually works against The Governess because details were necessarily omitted to keep to the shorter length, and the story wrapped up rather quickly. Adelaide is one of my favorite kinds of heroines in that she is portrayed as being almost entirely self-unaware and focused on whatever issue is at hand. Robert could have been fleshed out a bit more if the story had been full length.

Great book

I loved this story. A woman with no family to look after her, 2 little orphaned boys who can get into serious trouble in seconds and a confirmed bachelor assigned with looking after them all. It's a fun book, with crazy antics from the boys and lovely romance. Highly recommend.

Pleasant read

The characters are very, very briefly mentioned in On My Honor A Brethren in Arms series. It was a delightful read as we met the four young women but this story focused on Adelaide. Still worried about Adelaide's brother by end of the story but I'm sure his storyline will be in the other series. Can't wait for book 2.
