The teaser at the end of volume two had me leery about this one, but thankfully it wasn't as uncomfortable to read as it had projected itself. Yes, there is a rape that has happened, but we only see snippets of it through memories--yes, this is still uncomfortable, but at least I didn't have to sit through the whole thing, like I was afraid I would.
That said, the focus on this volume is on building trust and connections between what's going to be the core team of protagonists. And while there is conflict, there's surprisingly little space devoted to any of the other contestants, or the people running the game, at all. Despite this, the story actually moves along fairly well, including a bit more of a revelation as to why everyone's here on the island at all.
All in all, I liked this volume. It was nice to take a break from the "If you thought people were terrible before, just wait 'til you see this!" feel of the series so far, to see some actual redeeming qualities to some of these characters. They're not perfect paragons of integrity, but they're not monsters, either (so far at least), and I'm actually feeling like I can root for them now. BTOOOM! was a series I was very on the fence about, at the end of volume two, but this installment has rekindled my investment. I look forward to seeing where this goes.
