I decided to read Sankarea: Undying Love Story & Art By Mitsuru Hattori Vol.5 because I've read Vol.1-4 and loved it then I wanted to read one of my favorite Zombie books again/read more of this series. Once I started reading I fell in love again with this unusual zombie romance! This story follows a guy named Furuya Chihiro who is a High School student and is obsessed with Zombies to the point he wants one for his girlfriend! After his pet cat named Bub died he decided to use a resurrection potion to bring his cat back to life as a zombie. Then He meets a girl named Sanka Rea who is a popular girl and local heiress whose life isn't as perfect as it seems? Furuya Chihiro suggests that she could serve as a test subject! My favorite characters so far are Furuya Chihiro because he very unique, has a love for horror zombie themed stuff, and he's a very good friend to Sanka Rea because he is taking care of her once she became a zombie & letting her live her life. Sanka Rea because she's a girl who wants to be free from her family and experience life. She's now a Zombie who is finally experiencing life with the help of Chihiro by her side! Saohji Ranko because she's Furuya Chihiro cousin who is like an older sister and bestfriend to him, she also like Zombie Horror movies too. Also know about Rea's zombie secret! My favorite parts of the story are when Chihiro finally finds Rea in the abandon building they first meet in then we find out how Chihiro really feels about Rea even though she trying to eat him alive while the building is on fire. Chihiro is in love with Rea before she became a zombie because she didn't runaway from him when he was trying to bring his cat back to life, she stayed to help him. It turns out that Rea can go back to her senses after being in an intense zombie mode then Ranko, Grampa, and Darin save both of them from the flame! Another part I really like was when Rea and Chihiro are at the family BBQ and Mero makes everyone play "A Test of Courage" to find chopsticks in the forest but Rea & Chihiro fell into an ice cave hole. Then Chihiro explains to Rea that she's a unique type of zombie because he created the elixir not Darin and she isn't going to become exactly the type of zombie that Darin keeps saying, which is a very good thing because their connection grows closer between Rea & Chihiro as lovers. Another part I really enjoyed was when Chihiro and Ranko finally talk over about her feelings for him even though he's her cousin, which is nasty but she soon finds out that he loves Rea so she steals Darin's zombie pills to change her into a zombie but it turns out to be sleeping medicine so Ranko finally accepts that it's one sided love. Then something the next day is behind Ranko's home that might be a dead body in the bamboo forest?! I really love how strange this story is because it's very different from common Zombie stories! I think the person/zombie that Darin was studying was Sada because I think that Mero & Chihiro's mother's name also Rea reminds Mero of her mother and acts like her after she became a zombie. I hope we get to find out if Sada is really their mother and how she became a zombie. We get to see a scene where Chihiro is remembering his mother saying goodbye to them but it's unclear why she left. This volume had a lot of moments where Rea and Chihiro confess a lot about how they feel about each other which I love because I hope this relationship doesn't end for the worst. The art work is very detailed with each scene/place, characters, the gruesome gory scenes and I love it! I can't wait to read Sankarea: Undying Love By Mitsuru Hattori Vol.6 I want to know who's body Chihiro and Ranko find in the next book. Also I want to know more what is going happen to Sanka Rea as zombie, how is Chihiro and Rea's relationship will bloom and if anyone will find out that she's a zombie! I would recommend this book to horror fans and zombie lovers!
Summary (for the whole manga): Furuya Chihiro is a die-hard fan of zombies. He has a whole collection of zombie movie DVDs, zombie dolls/figurines, and other zombie-related stuff. With his grandfather's old book, he secretly tries to craft a resurrection drug that is said to be able to bring back the dead in the form of a zombie. Chihiro's beloved cat, Babu, has recently died; and therefore he wants to test the drug on Babu. In the event of his experiment that was done in an abandoned building, Sanka Rea, an heiress of the Sanka family, unexpectedly comes to the well near the building to vent out her frustration towards her father. Both of them surprisingly got along with each other afterwards, and Rea shows interest in Chihiro's zombie experiment. Rea secretly steals some of the resurrection drug from Chihiro and drinks the drug with the hopes of ending her life. However, nothing happens after she consumed the drug. The next night, Rea falls over a cliff when she was with her father. Surprisingly, Rea did not exactly die, due to the drug that she consumed. Rea becomes a zombie and is free from her father's grasp. She decides to live with Chihiro's family. Chihiro then does his best to keep Rea from rotting away and to learn the real truth about zombies and the resurrection drug.
For those that have not seen other volumes in this series I thought I would throw up a warning for sensitive readers. This series is by no means shy when it comes to fan service but being a love story about a girl turned zombie and the boy who cares for her there are also elements of gore and human consumption (though not completely) so if this is bothersome to your sensibilities be aware before you start this series.
With their meeting place on fire Chihiro and Rea are in danger but with recent events triggering Rea's turbid period Chihiro is very likely to fall victim to Rea's undead hunger even as the world burns around them. Unless help arrives and Rea snaps out of it things are going to get really hot and juicy.
In the mean time Ranko is continuing to slide into depression as Chihiro not only continues to choose to stay by Rea's side but is in danger of her loosing control like recent events (and in this volume though she did not know about that at first) Her feelings begin to overflow as she takes drastic measures to get her cousin (turns out it is legal for even first cousins to marry in Japan) to take notice of her normally reserved feelings much to her embarrassment.
I love this series so much! It is horrifying, scientific and has romance! In vol. 5, Wanko's sorry behind gets on my nerves. She has always wanted Chihiro romantically, but they are cousins...COUSINS. She doesn't care and she ends up doing something that she may regret(had my heart pounding).
Secondly, I love how the images capture the true nightmare of Sankarea going through her "Turbid Period", that period when zombies can't help but to feed. She is all normal and nice now after taking chunks out of Chihiro's arm and Chihiro is finally treating her like he truly wants her, but with Sankarea's horny mother in the way, Wanko's crazy behind and Darin's mysterious self-- how can Chihiro stay sane? I loved the artwork, the plot and the tension.
Wanko, madly in love with Chihiro, decides to take the step into becoming a zombie. Ingesting multiple pills from a clinical trial designed by Daryn, she hopes Chihiro will love and take care of her as he has done with Rea. Unfortunately, Daryn advises him that the bottle was from a failed trial and she had replaced the pills with ... well, one could label it as regular drugs. Nothing to harmful. Wanko wakes up and realizes she humiliation.
The abandoned hotel that Rea and Furuya had first met each other in has caught on fire from a lightning strike, and at the same time, Rea's urges take over. Rea pins Furuya down and begins to eat on him! If Rea doesn't eat Furuya first, the fire will consume them both. And as Furuya comes to the brink of death once again, his parting words to Rea may be the key to what can reverse the turbid period and bring her conscious back...! But will it be in time to save them both...?
I suppose that this was very a good volume, if not the best volume so far, but for some reason I just couldn't get into it. I think it's because I was nervous of things going on in my life at the moment... Aahh! I knew I should have read it the same night I read volume 4!! But I was so tired. Q_Q But anyway, Furuya-kun was really cool in this one too!! There was also so much awesome artwork I had to keep stopping from reading and paying attention to the story and just stare and drool at some of the awesome illustrations. Ohh, I think that I am becoming a Furuya-kun fangirl... AND KYAAHHH!! HE CONFESSED!! AND THE GUY CONFESSED FIRST TOO, WHAT IS THIS?! KYAAAA, FURUUYAAA-KUUNN!! HE CONFESSED IN THE MOST ROMANTIC, SWEET, AND FURUYA ESQUE WAY TOO!! <3 <3 Oh, and Furuya was even adorable and cool in the flashbacks, when he was 11. QwQ No wonder Ranko fell for him!! Ah, and finally, Furuya-kun figures out that Ranko has had a crush on him since they were little... IT SURE TOOK A WHILE AND A HELL OF A LOT OF BEATINGS TO GET IT THROUGH HIS HEAD, EH?! And even though romance is finally beginning to bloom between Rea and Furuya-kun... I'm starting to want them to never get together. I kind of want it to be like, because Rea is a zombie, and Furuya-kun is human, there is no way they can be together, since they can't even kiss or have sex. But I don't want Furuya-kun to die and come back as a zombie for Rea either! They've only known each other for two weeks, and Furuya-kun has so much potential! I kind of want Sankarea to end up being like Furuya-kun's summer romance, or perhaps the great romance of his adolescence. But I want Furuya-kun to grow old, and have children... but not with Rea. I'm not sure why I feel this way about it all, but I just do.
First, I have to say that I love this cover. The cover on volume four was really good, but this one is just so eye-catching. Particularly because of the bright, neon green. That in itself caught my eye, and then there’s the fact that Rea is eating Chihiro, looking very much like a zombie. It’s a beautiful cover, really.
Now, onto the actual contents.
Rea is really starting to deteriorate. There are very obviously bad things in her future, and it’s kind of hard to think about. I like Rea so much, she’s so likeable, shy and sweet, that I really don’t want her to just start eating people. I’m not sure how long her human consciousness is going to last.
On a surprising turn, though, there was a momentous talk between Chihiro and Wanko (including a surprising almost-plotline). I was not expecting it to happen so soon, and I actually feel a little bad for Wanko. She really does like him, but she really has no chance. I’m glad that that’s been done with, though, and we can move past that plot point. Looks like something interesting will be happening next with Bub, Chihiro’s cat zombie, anyway.
To sum things up: I still really like Rea. She’s just so… real, or something, to me. I want more growth from her, more expanding, both with Chihiro and Mero. I love Mero. Mero and Chihiro’s grandfather is just causing a lot of hilarity, but I’m interested in seeing what he actually knows. I’m kind of maybe okay with Wanko; I’m just not a big fan. I like Darin, and am interested in seeing what she does next. I’m not really a big fan of Chihiro, sadly. I want to like him, but I’m kind of just tolerating him right now. I think maybe it’s that cat face he makes (the… this one: :3) that bothers me.
Overall, I am just really enjoying this series. I’m especially enjoying the story and character progression. I look forward to seeing where that goes next, as I suspect something new will be revealed.
Ever since Sankarea was first published, I've enjoyed certain aspects of it, and could've done without a few other. This volume seemed to show a sturdy balance between a serious story, rom-com, and fanservice, and that is quite the feat in my book. Although I usually get very annoyed with fanservice over-sexualizing women, this volume did not cross the line to make me disgusted and ponder why people have these strange thoughts and find it necessary to illustrate it.
Anyhow, to the story! Sanka has the munchies, and Furuya is just at arms-length. Some missing flesh from his arm and a love confession later, Sanka returns to her usual self! After-confession awkwardness ensues for the majority of the volume. Both the jealous cousin and the strange scientist hit on Furuya, the apparent lady-killer. We see more of our precious imouto in this volume, whom is of course, adorable.
Basically, this is the best volume in this series so far, and hopefully it continues on that track.
Story: 3.5/5 - We're getting more serious about how dangerous Sanka's situation is, but still has funny parts throughout the volume. I laughed so hard at Sanka's reaction in the cave, her expression was cute. Art: 3.5/5 - I'm not overly-fond of this art-style, it's not bad either, but there is something off. The expressions are my favorite part of the series. Characters: 3.5/5 - We get more character development in this volume, and I'm grateful for that! Sanka could use some more though, as of now she is like this moe-puppy that reacts to everything like a kid (given her situation, that is understandable.)
Thank you for reading, I hope it helps! I give my honest opinion as detailed as I wish and hope to influence your chances of purchasing the subject under review, whether it is positive or negative.
Volume five is an improvement on the last volume and is mainly focusing on the romance aspect of the story. The love triangle is an odd one as it involves two characters that like each other and one person with unrequited love (and a potential fourth or fifth addition if you involve the events of the last volume and Darin). But the horror element isn’t lost and is strongly featured with a good helping of gore at the beginning and end. Five volumes in and I’m still gripped! I’m curious to see where the story goes and am excited to read on! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
