Sankarea: Undying Love Story & Art By Mitsuru Hattori

Official Synopsis:
FEAR THE FOREIGNER! Rea's just gotten permission to live with Chihiro and return to school, when a strange blonde woman arrives at the house! This isn't just some confused tourist, though she knows all about the reanimation potion, and Grandpa is terrified of her... Could she be a threat to Rea?

Genres: Zombies, Supernatural, Horror, Dark Comedy & Romance
Book Style: Manga (Japanese Comics - Read Right to Left)

I decided to read Sankarea: Undying Love Story & Art By Mitsuru Hattori Vol.3 because I've read Vol.1-2 and loved it then I wanted to read one of my favorite Zombie books again/read more of this series. Once I started reading I fell in love again with this unusual zombie romance! This story follows a guy named Furuya Chihiro who is a High School student and is obsessed with Zombies to the point he wants one for his girlfriend! After his pet cat named Bub died he decided to use a resurrection potion to bring his cat back to life as a zombie. Then He meets a girl named Sanka Rea who is a popular girl and local heiress whose life isn't as perfect as it seems? Furuya Chihiro suggests that she could serve as a test subject! My favorite characters so far are Furuya Chihiro because he very unique, has a love for horror zombie themed stuff, and he's a very good friend to Sanka Rea because he is taking care of her once she became a zombie & letting her live her life. Sanka Rea because she's a girl who wants to be free from her family and experience life. She's now a Zombie who is finally experiencing life with the help of Chihiro by her side! Saohji Ranko because she's Furuya Chihiro cousin who is like an older sister and bestfriend to him, she also like Zombie Horror movies too. Also know about Rea's zombie secret! My favorite parts of the story are when we finally meet Kurumiya Darin Arciento character because it turns out she's an zombie expert and was Furuya Jogoroh/Grandpa's assistant for experimenting on zombies. Darin also knows what's going to happen to Rea if she doesn't take care of her body so she wants to watch over Rea at school if anything happens. Another part I really like is when we get to see Furuya Mero's point of view of the story which is very interesting because Mero takes care of the house due to her & Chihiro's mother died. Mero visits her grave a lot because she barely new her mother and then Rea found her at the graves and Rea reminds Mero of her mother due to her cold touch also she knows Rea is a zombie too. Also really like the part when Darin goes to Rea's school to watch over her also to become a student there too. Rea shows Darin the school but they ended up in a area where they're not supposed to be, one top of the school roof then Darin fell of the roof and Rea jumps off to save her with the increase of her Zombie strength but then Rea's arm get's ripped off by a tree branch and they sew it back on! Then we finally find out that Rea has a "Fresh Period" before her body starts to zombify and it turns out Darin studied a woman who was exactly like Rea unlit she fully turn into zombie mode, so Chihiro has a protect Rea at all cost to keep herself normal as possible! I really love how strange this story is because it's very different from common Zombie stories! I think the person/zombie that Darin was studding was Sada because I think that Mero & Chihiro's mother's name also Rea reminds Mero of her mother and acts like her after she became a zombie. I hope we get to find out if Sada is really their mother and how she became a zombie. The art work is very detailed with each scene/place, characters, the gruesome gory scenes and I love it! I can't wait to read Sankarea: Undying Love By Mitsuru Hattori Vol.4 because I wonder how long it is before Rea fully becomes a zombie and start eating flesh. Also I want to know more what is going happen to Sanka Rea as zombie, how is Chihiro and Rea's relationship will bloom and if anyone will find out that she's a zombie! I would recommend this book to horror fans and zombie lovers.

Summary (for the whole manga):
Furuya Chihiro is a die-hard fan of zombies. He has a whole collection of zombie movie DVDs, zombie dolls/figurines, and other zombie-related stuff. With his grandfather's old book, he secretly tries to craft a resurrection drug that is said to be able to bring back the dead in the form of a zombie. Chihiro's beloved cat, Babu, has recently died; and therefore he wants to test the drug on Babu. In the event of his experiment that was done in an abandoned building, Sanka Rea, an heiress of the Sanka family, unexpectedly comes to the well near the building to vent out her frustration towards her father. Both of them surprisingly got along with each other afterwards, and Rea shows interest in Chihiro's zombie experiment. Rea secretly steals some of the resurrection drug from Chihiro and drinks the drug with the hopes of ending her life. However, nothing happens after she consumed the drug. The next night, Rea falls over a cliff when she was with her father. Surprisingly, Rea did not exactly die, due to the drug that she consumed. Rea becomes a zombie and is free from her father's grasp. She decides to live with Chihiro's family. Chihiro then does his best to keep Rea from rotting away and to learn the real truth about zombies and the resurrection drug.

I am so glad this manga picks up where the anime leaves off.

Darin-chan, is from a research facility that studies zombies. At first, you get the feeling that this girl is just super interested in zombies and could possibly hurt Rea.

Well, hurting Rea is still up in the air, but so far she has been able to provide information about Chihiro's grandfather(who apparently used to teach on zombies), and then of course Rea still just wants to be a normal girl. she wants to enjoy romance and malls, and this stuns Darin because the zombies she knows of back at home(U.S.A)- pretty much just feed...on people. Only one showed some suppression of zombie hunger.

Also, I lowkey feel as if Chihiro is burdened by Zombie Rea. He may say he wants a zombie girl and like shaving a beautiful zombie girl like Rea, but to me Rea seems to be burdening him and I think she gets the feeling that Wanko may the right one for him. This feeling passes quickly as more events happen.

This was a page-turner. Great story!

With Rea not only allowed to attend school still but to live with Chihiro we see the two of them continuing to discover how Rea's zombie body can handle day to day stresses. Speaking about stresses the foreigner Darin Arciento Kurumiya has come to Japan having a past with Chihiro's grandfather that still leaves him terrified. However with her experiences with zombies she can be a help to Rea and Chihiro if only she didn't keep looking at Rea as her next test subject.

Utterly disgusting! Pervert Author!!!

I ask this question to Mitsuru Hattori, the author - why don’t you directly sketch for porn comics instead of showing perversion in teen manga? Some of the angles are unnecessary placed and revealing, sexually objectifying the women characters.

That’s it. I’m done with this series. I was just reading it for the cat 🐈‍⬛ . It’s absolutely intolerable to read and focus on the story.

The third volume introduces us to Daryn, a former assistant to Chihiro's grandfather. He is quite terrified of her, maybe we'll find out soon. She also own a zombie pet, an owl called 18.

Daryn is a half zombie as well, and finds Rea fascinating and abnormal at the same time.

This is such an odd story that wouldn’t usually be something I like but there’s just enough information parsed out in each episode to make you crave more. I am so intrigued by the science behind this reanimation that I want to know more.

[Read more at my blog, Geeky Reading!]

This series is moving in a very interesting direction. One that has me surprised, and guessing. I took a small break from it, but I think I’m going to try to catch up now. I’m enjoying it so far.

We meet a new character in this volume, and she’s worked with Chihiro’s grandfather (who does not want to see her) on zombies in the past. At first she made me wary, and still does a little, because her intentions with Rea are questionable, but it actually seems like her and Rea might form a friendship. One that could be good for both of them. Rea doesn’t have a lot of friends, and she’s really only attached to Chihiro right now. She needs a friend. She also needs to learn how to deal with her zombie state.

I like Rea, and we got to see a new side of her in this volume. She’s still developing, and revealing herself as a character, learning about her problems, as well as growing as a person.

We also got to see some development for Mero, Chihiro’s little sister, who is just great. She’s so straightforward, and mature. There was a scene with her in this volume that has me really intrigued. We also saw some of Wanko, Chihiro’s cousin, who for some reason I am just not a very big fan of.

I’m mostly really interested in Rea’s zombie situation. I love the way it’s being used, how it’s developing, the problems that are coming up. There are some serious bad things coming up, being hinted at—it has me extremely interested.

I look forward to reading the next volume, and seeing where it goes from here.

A mysterious (and gorgeous!) foreigner woman travels to Japan to see Furuya's grandfather, whom she refers to as Professor Boyle. But get this, she even knows about zombies, and has been studying them since she was 6 years old! She forces herself on the Furuyas and stays at their residence for the time being, to observe Rea. But as her and Rea begin to get closer, the foreigner reveals to her what will happen once Rea is out of the "fresh period"... Meaning, Rea will come to no longer show affection to the people and things she loves, but she will rather acquire a taste for them!

Honestly, most shocking thing in here is that Darin is FOURTEEN. I MEAN, WHAT THE HELL? I certainly did not look that pretty and voluptuous at fourteen!! Also, there wasn't very much Furuya in this volume. :< I kinda miss him. Also, halfway through this volume is about when I stopped reading it online. ...Which is also kinda where the anime ended, I guess? LOL. So everything from this point will hopefully and most likely be a surprise! Woo!
P.S. Rea is always so adorable, but not with an arm and a half.

🌸21st March 2021🌸

Sankarea really toes that line between cute romance and unsettling horror and it works so well! Rae is happy to finally have a “normal” life (as normal as it can when your a zombie) and Furuya is taking responsibility, but of course things don’t stay calm for long as the mysterious Darin arrives unexpectedly. From the second volume, the main concern is preserving Rae’s body but now we found out so much more about what’s in store for Rae! It’s a fun manga and I’m excited to see what will happen next. The addition of Darin has definitely spiced things up!

I'm enjoying this so much. I've never had a series where I've rooted for both girls before... I feel like some of the conversations are really pretty deep, but I'm also enjoying the humor. Nice balance.

So this is where things diverge from the anime. Or keep going, anyway.

And for those wondering what the heck is with that cover? Yes, it does have something to do with the contents. It's not just some random, unrelated picture.

I normally dislike zombies, but this was actually pretty good. The main zombie character is cute^2 and the cat boy is just too funny. Overall, there are a few odd bits I simply don't get (scenes which likely make sense to Japanese and not Americans) but I would definetly recommend it!

I liked how twisted the storyline with Rea's father was in #2. This book is setting up a new character, but wasn't satisfying in its own right.
