Hi, I'm Ryan! I was born in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada in 1980 and since then have written several books. You can read my Wikipedia page for more, or check out my author site at RyanNorth.ca!

I'm the author of the webcomic Dinosaur Comics (that's the comic where the pictures don't change but the words do, it's better than it sounds and I've also done crazy things like turn Shakespeare into a choose-your-own-path adventure, write a comic for Marvel about a girl with all the powers of a squirrel, or mess up walking my dog so badly it made the news.

I'm working on more stuff as we speak, hopefully it's good

This volume of Squirrel Girl was the funniest that I have read in a while. She battles frost giants to save Canada, which of course is the key to saving the rest of the world. The funniest moment is when a group of frost giants are sitting around a campfire talking about their favorite types of frost. It turns out that frost giants are really passionate about that topic. Also, there is a cool new winter costume for Squirrel Girl.

This was possibly my favourite Squirrel Girl volume to date. There were so many laugh out loud moments that I kept getting my wife to pause her tv show so I could read them out to her! Not only that but she found them so funny that she didn’t even tell me stop being so annoying! That’s unprecedented, folks!

It was slightly annoying that they seemed to go out of their way to spoil the ending of the main War of the Realms book but I guess that’s what I get for reading the tie-ins first...

4.1/5.0

The combination of witty comedy and character growth is where this series really shines. The depth of Doreen Green's character arc is something that has been a real joy to explore.

Ryan North makes a War of the Realms tie-in story entirely painless by sending Squirrel Girl off to Canada, slapping her into an-enemy-of-my-enemy situation with Norse god of chaos Ratatoskr, and putting them on a fun road trip to fight frost giants.

Bonus: A terrific, twisty time travel tale with a tailed trio of talented troupers taming terrible time terrorist, Tang the Tonka Toy -- er, Kang the Conqueror.

As it nears its end (sob!), Squirrel Girl finally gets dragged into a crossover. But this is a book which, like its heroine, retains its character whatever the threat – not that I've read anything else of War of the Realms yet, but I bet none of them had Frost Giants debating their favourite types of frost, or paused for a two-page winter idyll set to the poetry of Robert – you guessed it – Frost.

(read as single issues)

I generally find big comics crossover events to be annoying, but of course Squirrel Girl's entry into the War of the Realms was delightful, even if I lacked some greater context.

The best part of this book is clearly the milestone 50th (42nd) issue, a fun romp through time with Kang(!). North does a great job of using time travel tropes and also offers some respect to Doreen's early history.

The rest of the book is a four-part crossover with War of the Realms, which is made the more delightful by the fact that North deeply embeds it in Doreen's storyline by bringing back Ratatoskr, and making it a major turning point for her. Beyond that, he does a good job of telling a totally self-contained storyline: Doreen must drive the frost giants from North America. And of course he does it all with his typical great humor and strong characterization.

Overall, a fun penultimate volume of Squirrel Girl.

Ryan North's first big-crossover story is successful as a story, even if it doesn't do a whole lot of crossing over - Loki is the only major Marvel character who makes an appearance and he's little more than a cameo. Instead, Squirrel Girl travels into Canada with a former foe as she takes on the Frost Giants. The story is well balanced between action sequences, humor, sleuthing, moral and ethical quandaries, and a restive trip into illustrating a classic poem. The ultimate ending is a little underwhelming, but the Frost Giants are surprisingly fun, and Doreen's travel companion makes the whole trek very enjoyable. The book also includes the '50th' issue, with Doreens from three eras working together to take down Kang the Konqueror, which is a fun adventure that brings back all the previous Squirrel Girl artists in a way that makes them all look good together. Definitely recommended.

An absolutely incredible volume! Probably my favorite in the series so far but I feel like I say that about every Squirrel Girl comic. But this one really has everything that makes Squirrel Girl so special! Beautiful art, hilarious out of context panels, genuine heart/emotions in the most surprising of settings, excellent callbacks to previous adventures, and proof that goodness comes in many forms and can truly make you unbeatable. So much fun and joy packed into one great read! I am happy.

In case you were wondering what Squirrel Girl was doing during the War of The Realms, the wait is now over! In true Squirrel Girl fashion she saves North America from the Frost Giants, and reforms a villain in the process. Having read all of the War of Realms and their subsequent spinoffs this one is the cutest and funniest.

A tie-in to the WAR OF THE REALMS crossover that, unfortunately, is the kind of thing that Squirrel Girl avoided. Like when they didn't do SECRET INVASION due to the fact that she was off saving dinosaurs in the Savage Land. This feels just as forced as any other involuntary crossover and not even the inclusion of the legendary squirrel of mythology makes it any better. I will say I really enjoyed Kang the Conqueror trying to kill Squirrel Girl with time travel only to fail repeatedly.

Still love Squirrel Girl, but even she can't escape getting pulled into a Marvel Crossover and is dragged down by it.

Another amazing arch, the best tie-in with a Marvel event that I ever read.
Also, down with the Chilling Tyrant! ;p

Squirrel Girl celebrates 50 issues by joining forces with two time-travelling versions of herself to battle Kang The Conqueror, before heading off to fight Frost Giants in her first ever event tie-in, as the War Of The Realms looms large.

The one-and-done issue here is probably the strongest of the five issues collected; the plotting's really tight, and the domino-like time travel mechanic is very well done. Kang's stupid face is just delightful, really. It's not so much a celebration of 50 issues as a celebration of Squirrel Girl herself, and god damn it, she deserves it.

The event tie-in takes an entire issue to get moving, which feels kind of unnecessary, but once it does it's pretty fun. It tends to spend a bit too much time with SG and Ratatoskr arguing, which I guess is the name of the game with Ratatoskr, but again, not great. Still, a clever conclusion in typical Squirrel Girl fashion saves the story, although more of SG's friends and less Frost Giants would have been appreciated.

Artwise, it's all Derek Charm all the time, bar a few pages in issue 42 by Erika Henderson (because of course, it's issue 50 after all) and Naomi Franquiz who designed all of the new characters for the issue as well. Lovely all around, even when everything's very white and blue up north with the Frosties.

It's sad to think that this is the penultimate volume of Squirrel Girl, but it's showing no sign of slowing down. The event tie-in's a bit rough, but the Squirrel Girl DNA is all there, just buried a little below the surface.

As a rule, I'm not fond of massive crossover events, as I feel like they interrupt otherwise interesting comics, and result in stories without proper endings. Fortunately, these problems did not plague the Unbeatable Squirrel Girl as she found herself pulled into the War of the Realms Event.

Sent by Loki to the frozen north (Canada), Doreen Green must save the country from Frost Giants, a storyline which involves in great new costumes, secret identify fun, and teaming up with an old enemy, Ratataskr, the God of Choas. And the results are full of laughs, just like you'd expect from a Squirrel Girl comic.

Add in a fun storyline involving Kang the Conqueror, and you have a trade that's worth your time. I just can't help but be sad knowing that this thoroughly enjoyable comic will be coming to an end soon.

In Squirrel Girl's first adventure, Kang the Conqueror has decided that she's a danger to him (even though he's pretty much invincible due to his spiffy 41st century suit and his time traveling abilities). But Kang hasn't met anyone like old Squirrel Girl, current Squirrel Girl, or young Squirrel Girl. The rest of the book follows Squirrel Girl as the War of the Realms comes to Earth. Loki is assigning Squirrel Girl to rid North America of the Frost Giants who've laid claim to the continent while he and other Avengers deal with the other continents new invaders, and she finds herself with the rather unlikely partner of Ratatoskr. Can she trust the Asgardian squirrel god of chaos to actually help?

The moral of the stories here is that nobody should underestimate Squirrel Girl at any age, and the Avengers' lives would be a whole lot easier if they'd listen to Squirrel Girl's solutions. They seem to take the long, difficult route, while Squirrel Girl uses smarts, people skills, and psychology to find the easier way. She also demonstrates once again that she can reform just about any supervillain because she actually takes the time to talk to them and listen to their issues before throwing punches. Granted, it doesn't always work, but she tries. I'm super sad that there's only one more volume left in the Unbeatable Squirrel Girl series by North. I've had this one for quite a while and I kept putting off reading it to delay being that much closer to the end. At least she's still around in Marvel Rising for now. If you're looking for a superhero who is also a great role model, Squirrel Girl is the best. Highly recommended.

Notes on content: No language issues. No sexual content. Some perilous situations and scuffs with others, but no one is seriously hurt.

The penultimate collection of Unbeatable Squirrel Girl v. 2 comics totally doesn't phone it in.

The first story is more time-travel shenanigans, this time with Kang the Conqueror. And, honestly, if you thought time-travel shenanigans were going to stop USG and Nancy, you'd be dead wrong. Ryan North keeps the action going with his customary humor and the Power of Friendship.

But USG doesn't even have time to rest, when she's thrust into a five-issue "War of the Realms" epic crossover. I've seen other comics that do epic company-wide crossovers that just fail when a single title collects their issues in a trade; too often, there's way too much that you have to have read to know what's going on and it feels sorely lacking. USG, naturally, didn't do that. USG's contribution to the saga works well by itself, which I thought was fantastic, because, seriously, I don't want to have to spend two hundred bucks on everyone else's trades just to piece together what happened. Well done, mates.

The frost giants were fantastic (I especially liked Daisy). And Ratatoskr (who raised chaos earlier in the series) was also fantastic. I think she's the only person Doreen ever said something not nice to, and it made a major impact on Ratatoskr. I really want to see some end-of-the-issue stories with Rachel Oskar now, and think she could be a major background player in the Marvel Universe.

Definitely worth the whatever I spent for it. No regrets.

You always know what you're going to get with Ryan North's Squirrel Girl! Puns and fun facts and fast-paced, upbeat humor. I admit I've stopped reading every single mini-aside at the bottom of the page, and it hurts a little, but it makes the reading more enjoyable because I'm not stopping as much. I can go back and read the commentary track after.

Two stories in this volume, one a time-travel romp with Kang the Conqueror and three ages of Squirrel Girl. The second was a longer story involving Frost Giants taking over Canada. "MOoooom what did you do with my arctic variant uniform?!"

Highlights for me were definitely Monkey Joe, the Original Squirrel in the time travel one, and Frost Giants Discuss Their Favorite Kind of Frost. "Rime isn't even really frost!"

Actually, I loved all the parts where the frost giants were doing things Faceless Villains rarely do - like flirting with each other or playing Frost Ball.

And not to spoil things, but as usual Squirrel Girl comes up with the perfect non-violent solution to the problem!

Bonus Loki sightings. He really has a thing for Nancy now?

Witty and charming, as always. The Kang storyline was a pretty decent funny time-travel tale, and Squirrel Girl's involvement in "War of the Realms" seemed like the perfect way to give her a part, without... you know, impacting the actual canon too heavily with a more outsider character. (And, honestly, now I'm kind of curious about that story arc... it's not high on my list, as I have way more DC to read first, but one of these days, I may just check it out...) I liked the redemption story with "Rachel" and I, of course, LOVED the Loki cameos. His and Nancy's friendship is so sweet and humorous. And as an added bonus--the notes at the bottom of the pages are finally in black! Thank you! Now I don't have to go nearly blind trying to read them! Basically... if you're wanting everything you love about Squirrel Girl, you'll get it in this graphic novel. (Plus a Robert Frost poem... and who doesn't love that?)

A little bit of bittersweetness interjected into this volume when I learned that this title is ending (has ended) with issue #50. Meaning that we can look forward to one more trade paperback volume before the end.

Otherwise, this is a good storyline as told by Ryan North. I appreciated the fact that he brought back Ratotaskr in an apropos tie-in to the greater Marvel storyline: The War of the Realms. Although I suppose he had little choice but to abandon some of his earlier setup.

Also, this was a little bit of tease in that the story begins with all of SG's typical crew: Chipmunk Hunk, Koi Boy, Brain Drain, Mary and Nancy. But then, immediately is pared down to just SG and Ratotaskr.

I'm even a bit more disappointed on learning the news of the title's end. I have already ceased following Ms. Marvel now that G. Willow Wilson no longer is writing. Now, I have to deal with losing the only other Marvel title that I enjoy.

So I'm not normally much for big cross-over events and this War of the Realms thing is up there on my "don't care" list.

But it did give us a chance to see more interaction between Squirrel Girl and Ratatoskr.

As per usual, Doreen remains the best. Her moment of doubt and anger manifests as telling Ratatoskr that she (Doreen) is worse of for having known her - that's Doreen's worst insult. The Norse Goddess of Chaos and Gossip of course shrugs this off, or appears to. But Doreen get under people's skin and shows them how to be better people.

Also, the squirrel-face ski mask is awesome.

I do miss Erica's art work.

This is a War of the Realms tie-in, but I love that Ryan North makes it clear from the very beginning that a) you don’t have to read any other War of the Realms books to understand this (and Squirrel Girl isn’t even in it), and b) if you do want to read that, check with your parents first because it’s a bit more violent than Squirrel Girl, which is super great of him because he knows a lot of kids read Squirrel Girl.

This book features yet another villain becoming a force for good because of Doreen’s leading by example. This book is so great, and I am very sad I only have one final trade to read before it ends.

I am firmly of the opinion that single-hero ongoing comic books rarely benefit from having issues or arcs that crossover with whatever the line-wide event of the day is. This volume is--to an extent--an example of this. It's still good, don't get me wrong. But this volume suffers from the lack of Squirrel Girl's supporting cast, shuffling them off to the Negative Zone, never to be heard from again until the very end. The themes in this volume were better done a few storyarcs ago with the focus on Kraven the Hunter. All in all, this is fine, but not nearly as good as previous volumes of SQUIRREL GIRL.

How fascinating, though, to learn that there were no rats in Alberta!

I gotta respect Ryan North's willingness to swerve away from the ongoing big event plotlines in the Marvel comics and send Squirrel Girl out of whatever mess the big heroes are bogged down in. In this case, she gets to spend Secret Wars (?) battling frost giants in Canada (!) with her former nemesis the trickster Squirrel God (got all that?) It's delightful and clever and I'd much rather skip all that superhero angst anyways. This collection loses points for the lack of Nancy Whitehead (and Mew!) but it was pretty great so I guess we'll (grudgingly) allow it.

It's a warm-hearted 3-stars from me. High 3. Yes I like it, but now in the 11th volume I think the charm and wit of Ryan North's Squirrel Girl has run its course with me. She's still funny and silly and refreshingly, relentlessly positive. But I'm not enjoying it as much as I did the earlier volumes.

Reading the letters column at the back of the book I learned that the next volume is North's last with the character, so even though I had decided this would be the last volume for me, I guess I might as well read the 12th and final.

I generally have a lot of skepticism about big crossover comic Events, because in general they seem more like a ploy to get me to buy new comics that I wouldn't normally choose than actual compelling storytelling. But the way Squirrel Girl gets involved in the War of the Realms event (which I otherwise know literally zero about) is brilliant and delightful from start to finish. A++ Ratatoskr content.

The War of the Realms is a great crossover event. I am not even a big fan of Thor and the Asgardians, but the event is swell. This, by far, is the funnest volume in it. And that includes the Deadpool issues (mainly because there are only two issues). Ratatoskr learns how to be human. Squirrel Girl is pushed to the edge, and at one point is dangerously close to being not nice! Luckily she regains herself. Hopefully, this opens the way to more SG crossovers.

Doreen Green/Squirrel Girl continues to be the best in all ways! I'd been having trouble getting back into reading amid all the stressors and news, and Doreen was a great way to get excited about reading and give my mood a very much needed lift. Ryan North and Derek Charm deliver another fantastic volume and the only thing that saddens me is there is only volume left to go! Love these books for ther hope, fun, humor, and all-around heart to save the world with empathy and butt-kicking.
