I love telling stories about the arts, because art, literature, music and architecture can lift us out of our workaday muddling of laundry and dirty dishes and overflowing recycling bins and fill us with wonder, sorrow, amazement, and joy. Even more remarkable to my mind is that the people who create the experiences aren’t some sort of higher form of the species–artists aren’t separate from the rest of us. They are us, human, with all the foibles and follies that implies. (And oh how much fun those foibles are to recount!)
What makes artists different is their belief in possibilities. A painter believes he or she can take a blank canvas and some oily pigments and invent a new vision. Writers believe they can put one word in front of the other and create a whole new world. Composers believe they can arrange sounds according to some sort of plan and transport your soul. To believe these things takes supreme self-confidence and an act of powerful will. If nothing else inspires you about art, let that inspire you: the belief that anything is possible.

Goya was the first to make me sick to my stomach within about ten to fifteen minutes in a room with the Black Paintings.
Picasso was the first to make my heart beat a little faster, to tickle the playful parts of me and make my insides giggle.
It wasn't just the raw emotion on the canvas or the brilliance of the conception and execution that resonated deep enough to elicit tears, nausea, and breathless delight. Much of this depended on my burgeoning understanding of the artists' biographies, the historical context surrounding their various works, and art history and art theory more generally (movements, ideals, symbolism, etc.). Art had never spoken to me before like books do, had never really punched through my ribcage, grabbed me by the spine, and shook me violently. I just hadn't known enough about it before to be able to read it the way I do books. Once it all clicked, that click RESOUNDED.
This is all to say that this book is a must-read for anyone interested in learning more about the power, joy, and ingenuity of art. (Even a seasoned art historian can appreciate Lunday's wit, humor, and pithiness as she cartwheels through a veritable Who's Who of tabloid art history.) It is a clever and riveting exploration of the scandals and innovations in art that rocked the world. Each artist gets his or her own chapter which includes a VERY handy guide for the less-than-savvy art historian (to wit: nationality, standout work, medium, art style, and painting locations). The artists are arranged chronologically throughout the book, and each chapter includes a more detailed biography along with relevant historical context and an explanation of how this style of thinking (or sculpting, or painting, or producing) was innovative or revolutionary, along with the kinds of saucy tidbits of trivia that makes these icons really come alive.
Where there is debate about anything in the art community, Lunday briefly explains both viewpoints and cites evidence or counter-arguments without weighing in. Her approach is comprehensive, her writing is brimming with an obvious fascination with and connection to art, and she literally made me laugh out loud in the subway as I read.
Possibly the only problem I have with this book is that there are no images of the works referenced. While she describes the works in question, she inherently relies on the reader's prior knowledge to carry the real weight of the points she makes. I would have liked to immediately look to the image to see what she's talking about, or refresh my memory, etc.
Still, a great reference for teachers, and a short, low-commitment read for people who don't always have time for cover-to-cover works (although reading it straight through really helps you conceptualize the relationship between different artists and movements and historical circumstances). One of the best books anyone's given me, and I plan to use it with the kids next week! Hope they love it as much as I did.

This book can be enjoyed by those that are looking to get into learning about artists, as well as those that know a lot about the artists and want to learn more random information about them. As Lunday states, while there are many artists that can be covered, she wanted to concentrate on those that were most noteworthy, but there is still a great number. We get reasonable biographies of about 4-5 pages of each artist and then stories that involved oddities and crazy occurrences involving the artist at hand. This book talks about the time Michaelangelo Merici da Caravaggio murdered someone, how Vincent van Gogh ate paint right from the bottle, how Dante Gabriel Rossetti buried his poems with his dead wife... and then had her exhumed so that he can retrieve and publish his poems, among other occurrences. The range of artists span from Jan van Eyck all the way to Andy Warhol.
Those that are slightly familiar with these artists will probably get the most out of reading this book. It is definitely a good way for beginners to know and get a general idea about each of the artists, but it will be up to you to look up the paintings or works of art in which they are talking about within this book.
I bought my copy of this book when I visited the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, where funny enough, many of these artists have original works of theirs residing, most notably van Gogh's Starry Night, which has resided at MoMA since 1941. I am glad that I own this, as well as books from this series about the presidents and first ladies (these are separate books). I would definitely like to expand my collection of the Quirk Books, which also has books about composers, filmmakers, authors, and the Civil War.
This book was good to dip in and out of and I will definitely refer to it as I continue to read more about different artists. I own quite a few books about different artists, but the bibliography in the back is nevertheless quite impressive!
This one took forever for me to read. I kept getting distracted and losing interest. It's more like a bathroom reader; you can just pick it up and leave it as you please. It would make a good coffee table book – it'd probably be a good conversation starter. Reading this was like browsing through a stack of biographical works on a bunch of well-known artists. The author’s selected bibliography looks like just that, a collection of sweeping biographies of various famous artists that she skimmed through and pulled the juiciest, most interesting facts that would appeal to the widest audience. You definitely shouldn't use this book as a source if you’re writing a paper on an artist or anything. It’s more of a tongue-in-cheek humorous exposé, not a scholarly source. It’s like Ok or People magazine’s version of an art book.
If you’ve taken a lot of art history classes, most of the facts aren’t anything new, but I had forgotten about a few things that I’d learned in college (like that I share my birthday with Edgar Degas, ooh la la!) so this was a nice little reminder. I agree with some other reviewers that the little caricatures (although cute) got in the way more than they added to the book. The captions for the illustrations are summarized on one page and then there’s a full description of the scene depicted on the next page, so that repetition was a little annoying. I think Lunday would have been better off providing illustrations of the standout works that she focuses on instead since not all of them are well-known to people without backgrounds in art. Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring is easy enough to recall since there’s been a book and movie based on it, but unless you’ve had an art history survey class of some kind, you probably won’t remember what exactly Rembrandt’s The Night Watch looks like unless you google it. Overall a fun read and a good introduction to art history.

Sunt o fire curioasă, îmi place să descopăr cât mai multe lucruri și să îmi îmbogățesc cultura generală. De câțiva ani am pe lista de dorințe cărțile lui Elizabeth Lunday și Robert Schnakenberg, despre viețile artiștilor, respectiv ale scriitorilor. Am ales să încep cu cea care prezintă secretele despre marii pictori și sculptori. A fost o surpriză tare plăcută!
🖌 Îmi place enorm felul în care este alcătuită cartea, cu date generale despre fiecare artist, ilustrații simpatice, informații despre realizările lor, plus comentarii și observații amuzante despre detalii din viețile personale și despre operele lor. Elizabeth Lunday ne ajută să cunoaștem marile nume din domeniul artei, despre care am tot auzit și să realizăm că au fost persoane cât se poate de reale, cu probleme sau vicii, ca oricare dintre noi. De pildă, știați că marele Caravaggio era un bărbat violent și avea un cazier interminabil, implicându-se des în bătăi sângeroase și alte belele? Ne putem da seama de firea lui impulsivă și din picturile sale, care aveau ca temă principală decapitarea și erau destul de tulburătoare. Totuși, din această carte am aflat multe lucruri interesante pe care nu le știam, atât despre el ca om, cât și despre operele sale. Caravaggio este doar unul dintre multele exemple care mi-au rămas în minte.

Elizabeth Lunday ne oferă o lecție tare drăguță de istorie, iar umorul său este, cu siguranță, cel care face diferența. Dacă sunteți pasionați de artă sau, pur și simplu, vă doriți să aflați lucruri noi și interesante, picanterii și mici „bârfe” nevinovate despre marile personalități, trebuie să adăugați această carte pe listă!
This book looks like it would be rather salacious, in a Hollywood Babylon sort of way, it's not. I bought it quite awhile ago when I first decided to seriously improve my art knowledge, but it got pushed by the wayside. When I recently came upon it, I almost didn't bother reading it at all, it is a series of short chapters on major artists of the western world. I know all this stuff, now, right? But I gave it a try, and it was very good. It was written well, never dry, a lot of the information I did know, but I also learned a lot. I would certainly recommend this to anyone just starting to study art. One caveat, there are only comic book style cartoons as illustrations, no photos or reproductions, so have the Internet standing by if you aren't familiar with the artworks in question.
Short stories about some great artists, some interesting facts I did not know about them but mostly gossip, sometimes fun but a bit cartoonish. Good easy holiday reading.
This fun little read is composed of 3-5 page blurbs on significant artists from the past several hundred years. All greatest hits from Art History 101 are included, mostly men, mostly white (although there are inserts every once in awhile explaining when artists and movements took inspiration/stole from Asian, African and American indigenous practices and aesthetics, which I appreciated). It's a good way to refresh on all the people you're already supposed to know about but may have forgotten. It also has little gossipy tidbits about their personalities, upbringing and styles, which I find interesting and helpful for remembering who's who. I also liked reading about who was an alcoholic and who was a womanizer and who had anger issues (hint: all of them?). I couldn't read it straight through, but I kept it in the bathroom and read it 2 pages at a time over the course of half a year, which is, in my opinion, the best way to read it. I took my mom and brother to the Met last week and it was actually helpful to have all of these artists at the forefront of my memory, and it made me a better guide.
Entertaining read about major artists. Despite the title, there was a lot of biographical information on each artist, in addition to the scandalous bits. My one quibble is that the author doesn't publish a photo of the artwork she is talking about for each artist. Because she is often mentioning a detail of a painting, you can't just rely on memory for that either. For example, she was talking about the red sky in Edward Munch's The Scream. I didn't recall the sky was red, thinking rather it was blue or gray. So, I had to pull it up to see that it is, indeed, red. Best read with an internet-accessing device at hand.
Listened this as an audiobook, pretty basic information. I might have given it 3 stars anyway if it wasn't for the reader, who annoyed me so much that I just couldn't. Her different accents (and whiny voice in general) got on my nerves. I don't know why some audiobook readers feel the need to speak with a stupid fake french accent when they're imitating someone who is french, but I wish people would stop doing that.
It wasn't bad. A little heavy on the cartoon graphics (I'd have liked it much better if some of the actual works that were referred to had been pictured - as photographs, not cartoons), and the style was a little too "tabloid" for my taste, but all in all entertaining to read.
Not a bad book, though some of the “shocking” facts are commonly taught in art classes and really aren’t that shocking. Why isn’t Caravaggio’s treatment of his mistress neglected? Still a fun read at times.
Secret Lives briefly tells you the tale - warts and all - of 35 artists, primarily chosen on the basis of their (or one of their works) fame. Each artist gets about five pages, in which Elizabeth Lunday manages to pack a surprising amount.
This includes genuinely insightful discussion on specific artworks. Lunday's commentary on Jan Eyk's Arnolfini portrait (the first artist covered in the book) made me focus on the oranges in the window and the play of light on the woman's face, features I wouldn't have focussed on otherwise.
Around the discussion of artworks we are treated to concise bios of the artists in question. This gives a lot of detail in very little space: I feel like I know most of what I need to know about Caravaggio for instance, a man whose life was somehow more dramatic than his pioneering chiaroscuro paintings: he murdered someone, fled to southern Italy and then to Malta, joining the Knights of Malta for a time before being imprisoned by the group and having to be smuggled off the island. Despite such escapades he was heralded as a celebrity wherever he went.
A lot of the biographical detail is delivered via quotes from contemporaries which is a particularly nice touch; there was shock at a Paul Cézanne exhibit from the general public but Cézanne's fellow impressionists were in awe as we hear from Pissarro, "My enthusiasm is nothing compared to Renoir's. Even Degas has succumbed to the charm of this refined savage".
The third and most unique aspect of the discussion is of course (noting the title) the scandal and more salacious details of the artists. We hear about Manet attempting a dual but since neither party knew what they were doing it ended with bent swords and both sides agreeing enough was enough, honour restored etc. The discussion of Salvador Dalí's late-in-life orgies, arranged for his septuagenerian wife, is typical of the sort of 'not in A-level art' discussion you are treated to. Much of it is very funny: while some anecdotes may be familiar (most know of Andy Warhol's goings on at The Factory) a lot of it will, I imagine, be new. In the Warhol chapter (the last in the book) we hear about how he befriended Jimmy Carter's mother and took her to Studio 54, a nightclub. She proclaimed she didn't know whether she was in heaven or hell but she liked it. I defy anyone not to be amused by the prospect of a woman born in the 19th century going to a 70s nightclub with Andy Warhol and his entourage.
In sum the book is a funny and speedy whizz through a whole heap of art history. The language used can occasionally veer towards the 'trying to be cool or edgy'; use of the word "preggers" early on had me rolling my eyes. But luckily such irritants are few and far between. The main reason this book doesn't earn a full five stars it the lack of images of the artworks in question. I was constantly searching paintings online to understand the discussion. I imagine this is a rights thing (it would cost a fortune to get the rights to print all these images) but it's a real nuisance to read the book with a computer in front of you. With this one big exception, this is a fun, easy-to-read, surprisingly insightful book that, despite its pick-up and put-down coffee book nature will likely have you reading through the whole thing.

I'm afterall a sucker for fun facts and I started physically reading this book last year and due to the nature of this book picked it up randomly now and then .
I knew this was going to be a favourite and I'd be coming back to it just for fun even after completing it.. so I took my sweet time.
But this year I found an audiobook and thought you know what.. let's just read it all.. And I'm not surprised to say I quite enjoyed it.
It's newspaper format only played into it's content. It was scandalous but also informative. The illustrations has this old inkwork feel to them. It lays right in between a magazine and an art textbook.
My only gripe would be that you could put into pictures of the artworks to have a context to the artists' work because not everyone picks these kinda books knowing everyone of them.
And I will be picking this up again now and again to read a specific artist.
Tak už mám za sebou ďalšie pikantnosti a tentokrát zo života slávnych umelcov. Celá táto séria kníh si udržiava plus mínus rovnaký štýl s tým, že sa dozvedáme niečo z histórie, z detstva, dospievania až po koniec života, o láskach i neláskach, sem-tam nejaká tá vražda alebo aspoň pokus o vraždu, a tak :D ...
Mne osobne sa veľmi pá��i ako je kniha prehľadne spracovaná,pretože mi to príde ako naozaj užitočné "opáčko" zo sveta umenia. Človek si uvedomí koľko tých umeleckých diel pozná a zároveň aj nepozná a môže ho to namotivovať sa viac zaujímať o dané diela a ich autorov.
Táto časť ma bavila oveľa viac oproti tej o režiséroch. Dalo by sa povedať, že na prvom mieste je u mňa kniha o spisovateľoch plus táto o umelcoch,potom skladatelia a nakoniec režiséri. Neviem, čo tým režisérom chýba, ale som rada, že som si ju nenechala na koniec.
Viața secretă care defapt nu e așa secretă...se regăsesc informații prezentate oriunde pe internet. Mna...e interesantă ideea de a aduna într-o carte mai multe personalități artistice și de a povesti mai degraba despre bizareriile și intrigile din viața lor decât despre creația lor artistică, însă nu cred că a ieșit chiar ceea ce se dorea. Mi se pare slăbuță cartea, iar limbajul este unul destul de trivial. Însă cea mai deranjantă este așezarea în pagină, folosirea mai multor culori și fonturi...nu am reușit să deslușesc care este scopul, pare că s-a dorit scoaterea în evidență a unor aspecte prin a le scrie în cadrane sau cu roșu...dar e haotic si deranjant... Partea cea mai bună din carte este ilustrația caricaturală.
Pe scurt: nu recomand. Ma degrabă cauți pe wikipedia aceste informații.
This is a cute, quick-reference type of book, great for any art teacher, historian or art history fan. I enjoyed the way the author was able to condense a lot of information into bite-sized sections, but I did notice a few problems: Some dates were inaccurate, and there were a few typo's- tiny things missed in the editing stage.
I started reading this book two years ago and only finished now as it's not a straight-through kind of read. With each artist section set up similarly, reading it continuously became dry and I started getting the artists confused.
This is a great stocking stuffer or graduation gift, just an introduction to something bigger, but it's not at all something for academia or serious research.

Ben resimden hiç anlamam maalesef, doğal olarak birçok ressamı da tanımam. Bu nedende kitabı not alarak okumak zorunda kaldım. Bahsedilen resimlerin nasıl olduğuna Google görsellerden bakmam gerekti. Birçoğunu daha önce görmüşüm ama resmin ismini ve ressamını bilmiyormuşum. Bildiğim isimlerin hayatlarını daha dikkatli okuduğumu söylemeliyim.

Deși lucrările și-au găsit inițial locul la” Salon des Refusés”, artiștiii au perseverat în ciuda faptului că lumea nu era pregatită pentru ceva nou și dorea epurarea “artei degenerate”. Toți artiștii au avut câte o idee originală despre artă: fie că trebuie să șochezi luând în derâdere arta predecesorilor tăi (Duchamp), fie că picturile se puteau folosi și în scop propagandistic (Picasso), fie că frumusețea excela în detrimentul peisajelor clișeice ce oglindeau natura (Rossetti), fie ca aveau o revolta interioara care se transforma uneori in violenta, iar prin actul artistic se defulau (Caravaggio). Toate aceste păreri sunt înglobate în semnificația pe care i-o putem oferi astăzi artei.
Absolutely love this book I think that it's an incredibly informative read however it lost a star for me because I feel like there was a lack of photos of the relevant art pieces that were discussed.
It would have really helped to have seen an image of the famous works by these famous artists because the book went into explicit detail about the historical context behind a lot of these paintings but didn't provide the actual image which made it somewhat frustrating because I found myself constantly googling the images while reading this book when it could have just been so easily provided. For me it made the reading experience a little bit more tedious but it didn't take away or Rob from the experience that much.
I thought at first that the book was loaded with paintings, but apparently not. Nonetheless, it is enjoyable to take a moment to Google the paintings and then read the descriptions in the book (holding two devices - I read on Kindle)
The book is fun as it allows you to learn about the lives of the artists and their challenges (kind of private problems). Another thing that I appreciate is how it lists the artists in chronological order, making it easy to understand the progression from one era to the next.
If you are interested in art and its history, I recommend reading this book. Although it does contain a lot of “hard words” (my English is not good), it is still enjoyable and provides further insights into the lives of the artists.
Took me ages to finish it and so many of the stories in the renaissance beginning of the book are now mixed up in my brain. So many French asshole men, that was like 70% of the book and only 2 women Georgia O’Keeffe and Frida Khalo. It does make sense historically that most “great masters” are European men and this is a book that roasts them. Which I was a fan of but then it got boring and I started thinking I wish I was learning about less known artists who are less assholes. Pros are that it does a good job at taking people who were deemed geniuses off their pedestals and it humanises them.
