This was an excellent little book.

I'm fairly sure it's an AR book that was donated to a thrift shop from a school library. I was rummaging through the kids books and came across it about a week ago and thought it was perfect for the upcoming celebration of MLK Day. I am reading sections of it at a time with my kids, but it's a little over 50 pages so I can't read it all to them in one sitting (try doing that with any 3 and 4 year old, ha!)

This book basically outlines Dr. King's life. How he grew up, wasn't allowed to see his white friend anymore, had to go to a different school, use a different watering fountain, and a different restroom all because of the color of his skin. It talks about Rosa Parks as well and how Dr. King just wanted to make a peaceful difference in the world, which he did. This beautifully demonstrates his story and his life in a way that kids can understand and relate to. I very much respect Dr. King and have a larger book to read on him on my own time, but I love that I have this one to read with my kids to teach them about such an important person and it's more on their level. Thank you Linda Lowery!

Informational
All grades reading level
I thought this book had lots of good information in it. I think it would be a great read aloud for the younger grades and a great book for older students to either read or do a report on. I thought it was interesting how the author both told about Martin Luther King’s life and the history surrounding it all at once. It was a very inspiring book that I think lots of kids would enjoy and benefit reading from.

A great child's biography of Martin Luther King Jr.!

(Note: It doesn't mention his faults, but I didn't expect it to!)

This biography of Martin Luther King is informing, interesting and captivating. The illustrations paired with the text combine to tell the story of Martin Luther King Jr. and how he lead the Civil Rights movement. I would use this in any classroom grades 2, 3, 4 or 5.

I read this as a kid and after a reread I think this is still perfect for younger children to read to learn about Martin Luther King and the story behind the creation of the holiday.

Perfect reading level for first or second grade. This gave a good basic overview of MLK's life and why we celebrate MLK day as a holiday.
