Being more of an Agatha Christie fan than an archaeological one, much of this memoir fell beyond my realm of understanding. Even then, Mallowan's energy and passion for his work shines through the pages. Detailed and articulate, his descriptions highlighted his findings and the people who surrounded him. My only complaint would be that as a scholar, he had the tendency to focus on dry facts and dates.
Perhaps it was only fair that he devoted four full chapters in his personal memoir towards the subject of his wife. After all, Mallowan and his work inspired half a dozen plots from Agatha Christie's novels, and she was not shy in describing her life with him in both her autobiographies. It was interesting to read his descriptions of her. I am glad that my favorite author was able to find many years of contentment and peace.
The accompanying photographs in this book were immensely interesting as well. Having read Christie's 'Come Tell Me How You Live', it was satisfying to see what the Queen Mary really looked like, as well as the infamous Mrs. Woolley.

Mallowan's memoirs combine his archaeology, the development of the field, his life and appreciation of his wife, Agatha Christie. An interesting combination and ideal for me! His accounts of Ur, Ninevah and Nimrud took me back to interests from my youth in addition to being very interesting summaries in themselves. The reference throughout the book to the development of archaeological study and in due course the formation of the institutes and university departments was equally fascinating. A very enjoyable read, not meant to take the place of in-depth studies of the sites, which run to many volumes, but very readable and informative.

Honestly, it was fun and fascinating. It is definitely a slice of life in a specific time and all the issues that come with that, but I learned so much.

I picked this up as a memorabilia from Greenway, a National Trust property in Devonshire and the summer home of Agatha Christie and Max Mallowan. As a huge fan of Christie, I have read practically everything I can get my hands on about and by her. So my primary interest was to know her through her husband's eyes and words.
I knew while picking this up that only one section out of four was dedicated to Christie. Fair enough, considering this is Mallowan's memoirs. :)
The most interesting thing I discovered was that at least a couple of times, he refers to her as a 'beauty' and as a 'woman of extraordinary beauty', a description I have not heard about her from any other quarter. She has been variously called good-natured, warm, kind, intelligent, and humorous - but beautiful? This was the first.
What I was disappointed about was the fact that Mallowan does not reveal much about her beyond what we already know from her Autobiography and her book Unfinished Portrait. In fact, he seems to have liberally repeated information already available in both. So I feel like I didn't get much further in my quest to piecing together the puzzle of her life. He was also very tight-lipped (very English of him!) about their love story and how he felt about her.
Perhaps this was a case of expectation mismatch.

The archaeology parts are of interest to archaeologists. The Agatha Christie parts are of interest to all.

Mallowan’s Memoirs is more about his career as an archeologist and academic and less about Agatha Christy, to whom he was married in 1930, four years after she and her first husband divorced. Max describes their 46 year marriage as “a living and merry companionship.”
However most of the book gave detailed descriptions of his career as an archeologist with constant references to his professional publications. If you are not interested in the history of the ancient Assyrians, you might enjoy Dame Agatha’s book “Come Tell me How You Live” which details the more human and humorous side of their life together.

"Malloran's Memoirs"are written by Agatha Christie's husband Max who was a noted archaeologist. Christie accompanied him on almost all his digs. Malloran had a sense of humor and gives a good picture of what archaeology was about in the first half of the 20th century, when everyone was hoping to find another King Tut's tomb. Parts of the book are pretty dry, and he reveals nothing about his wife that couldn't be on a book jacket cover. It’s just the type of book to keep at one’s bedside to lull one to sleep.

Really enjoyed this book and his enthusiasm for his subject. Made me revisit the British Museum to look at the huge amount of items they have from Iraq generally and Nimrud in particular. Would like to read more, but his main book on this is out of print and really expensive on the web. I did get the map book though, which is also really interesting.

A very interesting life economically told. I also enjoyed the chapters on his wife, Agatha Christie

:)

I bought this book on a visit to Greenway having read quite a bit about Agatha Christie and keen to read more of her second husband's memoirs. Part of my interest in Agatha Christie has been because, as a professional archaeologist myself, I worked on an excavation in Iraq (the site - Abu Salah - and the Director -Nicholas Postgate - are mentioned on p299) and we lived in their old house in Baghdad. I did find the descriptions of the digs fascinating and wish I had read this before I went to visit Nimrud in particular. Some.of the language and rather patronising colonial style writing about people I found grated on me but it is a product of it's times and the education of the people involved. What they achieved is remarkable. It brought back many happy memories.

The chapters on the discipline of archaeology, describing the challenges in undertaking the great "digs" are fascinating; illuminated with rich historical details and portraits of the characters involved in these adventurous and romantic exercises. The chapters about Agatha Christie (Max Mallowan was Agatha's second husband) , the person, her craft and her books are captivating. By contrast, the last chapter (19) is dull. The Epilogue is moving.
