More of a 3.5 star rating; This was a very cute little series and I only wish we could’ve gotten more volumes since I feel like there could’ve been more adventures told.
Jedyny zarzut jaki mam to brak kontynuacji.
I love magic schools so much, and Little Witch Academia absolutely sold me on this when I saw it on Netflix while browsing for a new show to watch. I got hooked from the first episode despite taking my sweet time finishing both seasons, and I immediately went searching for other adaptations of the show. Lo-and-behold, one day, I found a manga version.
(There's also the game, which I have on my wishlist and found before I found the manga, but I have not played yet. One day, though. And there's a light novel, too!)
The manga follows the anime pretty well at its core concept: the story is about Atsuko (Akko) Kagari, a girl who's had a dream of becoming a witch ever since she heard Shiny Chariot say the words, "Reach out your hand, and your story will begin!" at a magic show when she was a child. Shiny Chariot is her absolute inspiration (and she hopes to meet her one day), so she's over the moon to attend Luna Nova Academy, a prestigious school training girls to become witches — the same school Chariot attended. But Akko isn't from a magical family like her peers, so she struggles in her studies — from flying on a broom to successfully transforming herself into something else.
Akko very much gives off an in your face energetic vibe from the get go, and because I'm not the biggest fan of those types of characters, she actually came off slightly annoying at first. But she was such an endearing character that never gives up and her antics were humorous that one can't help but grow to love her as the protagonist. Plus, I think the rest of the characters just balances her out because they're so polarizing to her in characterization that it's a bit comical.
Reading the manga was an absolute treat, and I loved seeing the anime getting brought to life through a different medium. Keisuke Sato really captured the characters in the art right down to the expressions. But while I did enjoy Little Witch Academia, I feel like it cuts it off and goes into the side stories that really just complement the anime rather than being a sole adaptation. And by cutting off, I really mean it cuts off in a clunky fashion rather than a smooth transition
I love the side stories though: some of them aren't part of the anime, and some are vaguely touched upon. It was overall really nice diving further into some of those scenes and the backgrounds of some of the side characters that don't get covered as much in the anime (though the development isn't as great as the show when reading as a stand-alone without the prior knowledge). But while I enjoyed reading it overall, it feels like there's an assumption people reading the manga of Little Witch Academia are already fans of the anime and have watched it or are in the process of watching rather than the possibility of the other way around. This was wholesome and cute, but I'd highly recommend watching the anime over the manga.
After I binge-watched the anime series to this manga in about three sittings, earlier this year, I was eager to read the manga volumes, too, and I didn't regret it! It was fun, diving into the magical world of young aspiring witch Akko and her friends, and to relive some of their adventures, while also experiencing new ones. The story of the manga is a mix of episodes from the original anime series by studio TRIGGER and new episodes added by the artist. You might get a better understanding of all the characters, if you know both, anime and manga, however, you can surely enjoy the manga by itself. The story is light and entertaining but doesn't fail to address morals and other topics that I find important in stories aimed for younger people and adults alike, and the characters are all charming and very sweet. The drawing style comes very close to the anime series, which I really liked, and even if the ending is different from the climax of the anime, it is very well done and maybe even promises more. I haven't done my research yet if there are more volumes planned, but if so, I'd gladly buy those, too, if they ever get released here. I got the German 3-volumes boxed set, which besides the pretty box came with a cute bookmark and a poster as a bonus. Really beautiful release!
I don’t have too much to say about this volume. It was cute and charming as always. I had a lot of fun seeing Annabell again and getting some character development for Barbara. Just a lot of cute short stories!

Akko is dieting under the misguided idea that she needs to for the upcoming physical. Jasminka is always eating, so Akko forces her to go on a diet too...not knowing there's a magical reason Jasminka needs to eat all the time. The other girls are hoping this will teach Akko a lesson. Akko then stumbles into Constanze's secret lab where she is fixing everything everyone gives her to fix...which is a bit much, and Akko tries to help with disastrous results. Beloved author Annabel Crumb is having horrible writer's block so she visits the school to try and get some inspiration. They inspire her alright, but not in the way they hoped to. And then the school enters a broom riding race against another magical school. Their best rider is down with a rare disease that needs a magical cure, so some of the girls are out looking for ingredients to heal her and meanwhile somehow Akko gets into the relay line up even though she can't ride at all.
Half of the time while I was reading this I was going, 'What is going on?' I think the book suffers a little in pacing because it was adapted from an anime and not the other way around as per usual. It took me a while to remember who was who as well. Flipping through it again a week later to try and write a coherent review, it made more sense, but it doesn't say much for the book that you have to read or skim through it 2x to get it to make sense. I also felt like there should have been a stronger message about dieting and body image in the first story; there were mild attempts but it was weak. This is a 2.5 for me.
Notes on content: Language: About 5 minor swears if I remember right. Sexual content: None Violence: There are some magical battles but everyone ends up ok. Ethnic diversity: Takes place in a fantasy world. Most characters appear to have pale skin, but not sure if that's just because it is in black and white? LGBTQ+ content: None Other: Girls worried about amount they are eating and being skinny enough for a physical, and not dieting in healthy ways. There's a mild attempt at saying this isn't wise.
Akko has a journey of discovery and adventure ahead for her and her friends as the 3rd book ends this part of their tale.
I am not sure what it is about the Little Witch Academia manga and anime that I like so much but I would have to say it has something about this spunky relatively no talent wanna-be witch Akko and her indomitable will. Okay indomitable is not exactly right but she is stubborn as heck and pretty short sighted so she is a fascinating and fun character with flaws a plenty but more then enough heart to compensate. It is also nice to see manga out there that are marketed toward younger readers that are not super violent or using the female cast as a tool to draw the perverted readers to the series. Another thing I really liked about this series i how the character's express themselves and yes it is cartoony but the important part is they express themselves so well you don't even have to read the book to understand what they are feeling and the expressions tend to be a bit comical which does not hurt. :)
So if you don't mind reading a short series about young ladies learning how to do magic in a school for witches then the manga is a good gateway to other resources for the series seeing as it has new stories not found in the anime as well as some slight differences from existing plots so you will not know how or if you might get some spoilers till it is to late and you are already laughing and/or crying by what comes out in the anime. :)

Aside from the glaring issue that it is not at all standalone and that in order to fully appreciate the stories you NEED to watch the anime...
The main protagonist is the stock "clumsy, incapable, yet plucky and determined" character. However, unlike other instances she is thoroughly unlikable and shows no real progression as a character. Usually these types of characters show some kind of ability that they excel in. Something that gets around the obvious flaw in logic that someone who shows no aptitude for studies or ability to improve would be flunked out in a heart beat. But no...there's nothing Akko is talented in. There's nothing that makes her unique or special other than she is unique and special for "reasons" because the story demands it.
Why does she have the shiny rod? Dunno. Why does Chariot think she has any kind of potential? Couldn't tell you Why do her "friends" continue to put up with her endless nonsense? Beats me
Thank god I only had to suffer through three of these damn things.
The series as a whole is cute, I love the art style and the little stories are generally wholesome and fun. The ending is rather abrupt, so I recommend reading it as a slice of life manga rather than a continuous story despite the evolving plot points, because most of those never reach any sort of conclusion; which suits me fine, as I prefer this over a rushed ending, but it might not be to everyone's taste. However, a few things hold Little Witch Academia back. First of all is Akko, who is incredibly annoying. An energetic protagonist is one thing, but Akko is a chihuahua on cocaine for the first two books and only improves a bit in the third—yay for character development, but she was still insufferable for 2/3 of the series. I'm also docking a point for random fatphobia at the beginning of the third book. I get that it's a different culture but holy shit. Overall it's not a bad little series if you can get it secondhand for cheap, or better yet, for free at your local library.
I really really enjoyed this series, As I’ve said in the other reviews I just adore Akko and her friend. She’s so funny and clumsy but at the same time so determined to be a witch, I found myself laughing at her adventures in this on like I did the others and I just think the story is easy to follow and the anime is so cute. It’s made me want to become a Luna Nova student like Akko and Chariot!
Highly recommend for anyone looking at getting into manga or just anyone who likes manga as there cute and easy going.
This review will apply to all three books. I appreciate this as a fan of the original series but given that it's not a complete adaptation and in a lot of cases does less due to the removal of objective timing and beautiful animation, I can't really recommend this, especially over the original show. I have to stress that I appreciate the effort that was made here, there are some really well done translations to the page, but it's unfortunately not worth investing time and money in for it.
I enjoy reading The Little Witch Academia manga series only I found so much lost potential in the manga. It is a shame as the anime continued on to two seasons with more cute adventures for the training witches and I for the diversity of different characters.
Little Witch Academia is more of a guilty pleasure manga as I love the cute little adventures and the mixture of characters Andrew and Akko is my favourite magical couple wish they had more scenes together in both the manga and anime especially as he is the most supportive of Akko dream.
