The name Poe brings to mind images of murderers and madmen, premature burials, and mysterious women who return from the dead. His works have been in print since 1827 and include such literary classics as The Tell-Tale Heart, The Raven, and The Fall of the House of Usher. This versatile writer’s oeuvre includes short stories, poetry, a novel, a textbook, a book of scientific theory, and hundreds of essays and book reviews. He is widely acknowledged as the inventor of the modern detective story and an innovator in the science fiction genre, but he made his living as America’s first great literary critic and theoretician. Poe’s reputation today rests primarily on his tales of terror as well as on his haunting lyric poetry.
Just as the bizarre characters in Poe’s stories have captured the public imagination so too has Poe himself. He is seen as a morbid, mysterious figure lurking in the shadows of moonlit cemeteries or crumbling castles. This is the Poe of legend. But much of what we know about Poe is wrong, the product of a biography written by one of his enemies in an attempt to defame the author’s name.
The real Poe was born to traveling actors in Boston on January 19, 1809. Edgar was the second of three children. His other brother William Henry Leonard Poe would also become a poet before his early death, and Poe’s sister Rosalie Poe would grow up to teach penmanship at a Richmond girls’ school. Within three years of Poe’s birth both of his parents had died, and he was taken in by the wealthy tobacco merchant John Allan and his wife Frances Valentine Allan in Richmond, Virginia while Poe’s siblings went to live with other families. Mr. Allan would rear Poe to be a businessman and a Virginia gentleman, but Poe had dreams of being a writer in emulation of his childhood hero the British poet Lord Byron. Early poetic verses found written in a young Poe’s handwriting on the backs of Allan’s ledger sheets reveal how little interest Poe had in the tobacco business.
he married a 13 year old at 27 😟😟😟…chile anyways um i think “evening star” is my favourite. also this is prob the first and last poem book i will ever read
"Never its mysteries are exposed To the weak human eye unclosed; So wills its King, who hath forbid The uplifting of the fringed lid; And thus the sad Soul that here passes Beholds it but through darkened glasses."
3.5 ⭐️ We had to read it for english literature class. It's better than what she chose the past few times, but for me, it was quite difficult to read. (the way poe writes)
⭐️ choice of words ⭐️ short stories ⭐️ plots 0.5 ⭐️ writing style
don’t believe this to be a particularly appropriate Christmas present for an eleven year old in complete transparency. haven’t slept peacefully since 2012. partly due to Poe and also tory governance.
tell tale heart is etched on my frontal cerebral cortex and I am absolutely not complaining. equally gorgeous as it is unnerving.
I was so annoyed when I had to read Edgar Allen Poe as a high schooler and now here I am, reading Edgar Allen Poe to high schoolers and appreciating him. 🖤
Note: This review is for the Caedmon Audio Edgar Allen Poe Audio Collection Performed by Vincent Price and Basil Rathbone.
Edgar Allen Poe's poetry and short stories? 4/5 stars. Some are fabulous, like "The Raven" and "The Fall of the House of Usher", but some I don't find very memorable, like "The Imp of the Perverse" or "The Gold Bug".
This audio collection of Poe's work as performed by Vincent Price and Basil Rathbone? 2/5 stars. This is such a slapdash patchwork of a production, like a bad recording of a small stage performance. How anyone approves releasing a collection of poetry and short stories without introducing the TITLE of each piece before they're given is beyond me! The narrators fluctuate between the softest whispers and literally yelling into the microphone so suddenly and so often that it comes across as laziness rather than a stylistic choice. This audio "production" was not put together with the listener in mind at all and it makes me want to avoid the rest of Caedmon Audio's portfolio like the plague.
I'm glad that the Libby App is making Poe's work available to those who wouldn't otherwise be able to read him, but I only want people reading this Caedmon Audio edition if they literally have NO other editions available to them. This is a last resort only; proceed with caution and a hunk of salt. Poe's work deserves to be read and studied over and over, and I'm sure I'll encounter him in another edition someday.
“The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could, but when he ventured upon insult I vowed revenge”… Edgar Allan Poe is largely known for his gruesome and horror style poems. From the vulture-like and suspicious eye from the “Tell-Tale Heart” to the grisly ending to an Italian wine tasting with a naïve Fortunato from “The Cask of Amontillado “ there is no doubt that Poe strikes horror and thriller like no other poet. Poes use of imagery and symbolism to his writing is worth any annotators time. Not one of Poes poems are short of showcasing of his extreme talents.
The Fall of the House of Usher This was such a beautifully haunting read ✨️ I loved the gothic feel and the build of the fear and discomfort Poe invoked.
Also, I didn't realise that the Usher family was ONE family as in no other blood lines...gross but adds to the madness and darkness of the creeping doom that claims the house and family of Usher.
I had an idea of what the expect from this short horror from reading the retelling in What moves the dead but it still was such a treat to read my first story from Poe ✨️
Of course, one of the most renowned author-poet in the literary world. Annabel Lee and The Raven top of the class and a wonderful read. His collection of Poems For Youth and Manhood is simply *hands down* one of the most amusing writing ever with lyricism at its finest.
Edgar Allen Poe >>
p.s. will update with his collection of stories later:)
I love Edger Allen Poe's writing. He focuses on the horrors of the human mind and it's thrilling. His poems are so well written and really enjoyable to read. I highly recommend reading if you haven't already!
Classic for a reason. The word play and mood created. Love the story and character development. Yes, often creepy but also satirical and even funny. Recommend for the Halloween season and fans of the show Wednesday
Nou dat viel tegen! Geïnspireerd door de Netflix serie over de val van het huis Usher. De serie is beter. De taal en de gedachten stroom van lang gelee konden me niet (meer) raken.
I struggled my way through a lot of this, despite really wanting to enjoy it. Highlights were Dupin/Rue Morgue, The Tell Tale Heart, The Pit and the Pendulum and The Masque of the Red Death.
