Elemental Assassin #4.7

Haints and Hobwebs

Rate this book
Even the Spider can’t escape a ghost’s web . . .

I’m being haunted.

As Gin Blanco, aka the assassin the Spider, I’m used to being haunted by all the bad things I’ve done over the years. I suppose it was only a matter of time before an actual ghost came back to haunt me. But for once, I’m not the bad guy, and I wasn’t the person who sent this ghost—this haint—into the afterlife.

But this haint definitely wants something from me, and I can’t help but think that it’s revenge on the person responsible for her untimely demise.

Good thing revenge is my specialty, whether it’s among the living or the dead . . .

Note: Haints and Hobwebs is an 11,000-word story that takes place after the events of Tangled Threads, book 4 in the Elemental Assassin urban fantasy series. Haints and Hobwebs first appeared in The Mammoth Book of Ghost Romance in 2012.

What can I say about Haints and Hobwebs, well if you haven’t tried the Elemental Assassin series this is a nice novella to give the series a go.

I LOVE Gin. I LOVE all the characters. Finn, Gin, and Owen all of them. I adore Owen. He’s so sweet and he loves Gin. The best thing about this novella is that we get GHOSTS, yes, ghosts. This is the first time we are seeing them in this world. Last, as always their is no shortage of action. It’s one thing you can always count on in the Elemental Assassin series.

Haints and Hobwebs had me hooked from begging to end. I adored this novella and I LOVE the Elemental Assassin series. If you enjoy a kick-ass heroine, outstanding world building, and amazing action sequences, then this novella and series are for you.

Definitely a fun read and perfect for fall. I love Gin and gang and this just reminded me all over again why this series is so much fun to read. From the romance to the action, to the friendships, it's just a win win.

Haints and Hobwebs was a fantastic addition to the Elemental Assassin series wherein Gin finds herself unexpectedly haunted.

Gin Blanco isn't surprised that a haint is haunting her, but she is surprised it's not one of her past victims as the assassin the Spider. It's clear the ghost wants something from her and Gin suspects it's revenge against the person who killed her. And revenge is one thing Gin excels at.

The introduction of ghosts into this world was an interesting one that I enjoyed. It makes sense with the other creatures we know to exist in this world that ghosts would be among them. I loved that it was ultimately Gin's habit of talking too much that caused her to get haunted in the first place. I also liked that Gin drew in those around her to help figure out what the haint wanted and how to get it. The villain was a good one and there were a few surprises I didn't see coming in Gin's confrontation with them. Overall I was really happy with the way the plot was resolved and there was a nice moment at the end between Gin and the haint.

This novella includes many of the side characters we've come to love throughout the series. Finn appears to dig up information for Gin. Jo-Jo and Sophia appear with Jo-Jo sharing pertinent information with Gin about the person she's up against. There's a nice bonding moment between Gin and Bria which was great to see after the slightly rocky place the two were left in at the end of Tangled Threads. Plus we get some lovely scenes between Gin and Owen. I have been loving the relationship between these two and it's nice to see them in a happy place.

Overall Haints and Hobwebs was a fun, quick read and I recommend it for fans of the series. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series, Spider's Revenge, soon.

I love the cover of this novella. It's so cool looking. In this short novella, Gin is at the cemetery visiting Fletcher's grave when she picks up a ghost and she follows her home because she wants Gin to do something for her and that is to help free her boyfriends soul that was captured by a killer vampire almost 100 years ago. BEcause Gin likes to help people who can't help themselves she agrees to find this vampire, kill it, and free the soul. This is one of my favorite novella's in the series so far.

Ultimately this short was frustrating. Not because it wasn't good and didn't fit in the Elemental Assassin series. I actually liked it and thought that it was pretty good, except it felt a little rushed. No, the reason this was so frustrating is because I didn't read it when it actually fell in the series. Instead I've read it after everything that has gone down in Widow's Web and Deadly Sting. That made everything that happened between Gin and Owen in this short frustrating to read, but it also gave me a tiny bit of hope.

Series: Elemental Assassin #4.7
Rating: 4 stars - It was really good

After making a visit to Fletcher’s grave, Gin finds herself haunted by a haint. This haint wants revenge for its death and Gin agrees to help.

This was a short story that was very interesting. This is the first time ghosts or haints have been mentioned in this series so it was interesting to see how they worked. I enjoyed this story of love and loss a lot. As with all of Gin’s stories, I loved seeing her kick ass and help those in need.

Also, I really enjoyed seeing Owen actually help with a mission. It shows how much he accepts all of Gin and her assassin ways. He really is the perfect man for her and I can’t wait to see their relationship grow.

Quick, fun story for Elemental Assassin fans, especially those of us who adore Gin and Owen. It's exactly what you would come to expect from an EA book––witty, exciting, and a little mysterious––even if it stretches the lore a little bit. That said, it only took me about 30 minutes to read, and I don't regret any second of it!

REVIEW: HAINTS AND HOBWEBS is a short story in Jennifer Estep’s Elemental Assassin paranormal/ urban fantasy series focusing on Gin Blanco aka The Spider aka The Assassin –the reigning Queen of the paranormal Underworld of Ashland. HAINTS AND HOBWEBS takes place after the events of Tangled Threads (Elemental Assassin #4).

NOTE: HAINTS AND HOBWEBS first appears in The Mammoth Book of Ghost Romance in 2012

DEFINITION: A Haint is a restless spirit who is unable to move on due to unfinished business.

Told from first person point of view (Gin Blanco) HAINTS AND HOBWEBS follows Gin as she is haunted by the spirit of a young woman who needs our heroine’s help. Unable to move on, the ‘haint’ needs Gin’s help to reunite with the man that she loves but his soul lays trapped behind magic and glass. When Gin’s foster-brother Finn discovers the truth behind the spirit’s death, Gin goes in search of the young lover’s soul.

HAINTS AND HOBWEBS is a very quick read; an intriguing, engaging and colourful stand alone in the author’s Elemental Assassin series that reveals at little about Gin and Owen’s growing love; Gin and Jo Jo’s ability to see spirits; the early stages of Finn and Bria’s relationship; and the ultimate evil who steals the souls of the people he kills.

Haints and Hobwebs by Jennifer Estep is a short story that is part of her wonderful Elemental Assassin series. Haints and Hobwebs is a re-release that was published as part of an anthology from a few years ago. Since I had never read this book, I looked forward to reading this, as I love Gin Blanco and Elemental Assassin series.

The story begins with Gin visiting Fletcher’s grave and she sees a female ghost standing over someone else’s grave. Gin is shocked as this is the first time she can see a ghost; as she watches the girl, Gin notices the desperation on her face. What is a Haint? It is a spirit (ghost) that cannot move on due to something left unsettled. Even though communications is difficult, in a short time, Gin and her team will become involved in helping the haint solve the problem, which has been in existence for many years.

What follows is a quick story that is exciting and also fun. It was exciting as Gin will discover an evil vampire who is killing people and stealing their souls; one of those souls is from the girl’s (haint) boyfriend, whom she is desperate to help. It was tense when both Gin and Owen find themselves in a deathly situation. The fun part, since this goes back to earlier in the series, was remembering the early days of Gin & Owen; Gin’s sister Bria, and just spending time with them all.

Haints and Hobwebs was a nice fast paced enjoyable read. If you are a fan of the Elemental Assassin series, I suggest you read this short story, as it was fun.

"Haints and Hobwebs" is a short novella in the Elemental Assassins series. This time Gin is at the graveyard visiting the grave of her former mentor, Fletcher. As she is updating Fletcher on the events of her life including her love for Owen, she sees a haint. Most people believe ghosts and haints are the same thing but they are not. A ghost exists merely to start trouble and scare people while haints are unable to move on because they need or want closure to some unresolved issue.

At first the haint does not realize that Gin can see her but then when Gin goes over to the grave the haint is attempting to clean she realizes she can be seen. Gin explains to her who she is and then the haint decides to follow Gin in an attempt to get her to help her. With the assistance of her foster brother, Fletcher, Gin learns that the haint is Tess Darville and she wants to avenge the death of her fiancee, Tommy Kirckwood. When two young people are found murdered at the quarry, it becomes perfectly clear that Gin will need to put an end to the person responsible for these deaths as well as the deaths of Tommy and Tess.

These novellas are always such fun because Ms. Estep has the unique ability to pack a lot into a very short but memorable read. The characters are exciting and the story line superb. It also acts as a little tease while fans wait for the next installment in the series. I still love this series even though we are now looking forward to volume 17. It has not lost its' edge and still makes me smile.

This creepy little novella with a sweet ending. Because it's so short, I'll keep my review short so as to not spoil anything... so, this was a nice little break the main story, Estep does her best to annoy us with her constant repetition of descriptions (Jojo and her basset hound, Sophia is Goth, and Finn loves his Fiona Fine suits and is a perpetual womanizer... WE GET IT!!!) But all in all, this was a cute little filler and well worth the repetition to read about a ghostly love and Gin and Owen's own budding romance.

It was quick and sweet involving a romance that will never die. It also made me appreciate Gin and Owen's relationship more because I'm reading this kind of late and I know all the rocky bumps that has happened in their relationship. It was nice to go back to the beginning of it where Owen would pour all this love at Gin and she would try to take it in pieces instead of all at once but couldn't because she felt so much love for him too.

Very good short story!

This short story was a breath of fresh air. The author abandoned the need to reiterate plot points repeatedly; nearly anyway. She added a new aspect to her story’s universe.

Ghosts! We get ghosts in this Elemental Assassin novella, and it was awesome! This is actually the first time we see them in this world.

The first time I saw the haint was in the cemetery.
Shocking, I know, a ghost hanging out in a graveyard, but the pale, wispy figure still caught my eye, if only for the fact it was the first one I’d ever seen.
You’d think that I would have been visited by more haints in my time, given the fact that I was a semi-retired assassin–and I’d helped a lot of people move on from this life to the next with a slice or two of my silverstone knives.

I love Gin, she’s so sassy. Lol.

So, Gin is visiting Fletcher’s grave when she sees a ghost. This ghosts attaches herself to Gin, hoping that Gin will help her in that special way she “helps.” Lol. So with the help of Finn’s sleuthing abilities she sets out to find out what the deal is with this ghost.

The antagonist in this one novella has air magic and it was used in the most interesting way. We have not seen it used like this before in this series, so I really liked that. It was just very cool... but pretty awful too.

As always, I love the characters! I love Finn and Gin and Owen... just, all of them! I particularly adore Owen! He is the sweetest thing ever and I love him and Gin together. I am so glad we got to see a lot of him in this one.

I also loved the action in this. One of the things you can count on in a Jennifer Estep book is amazing action sequences! And the story itself was actually very sweet. Overall, I really enjoyed this novella! I actually first read it earlier this summer in the anthology it was originally published in, but I am so glad it's now being released on it's own! I highly recommend it, especially if you’re a fan of the series!

I love anything Elemental Assassin. Haints and Hobwebs is another wonderful short story in the saga of Gin Blanco. Gin is approached by a haint in the graveyard where Fletcher is buried. Not one to see ghosts often, Gin decides to look into the departed on the headstone the haint is focused on. What Gin and Finn discover leads back to an ancient vampire and a tragic love story.

Short stories very rarely fulfill me because ultimately they feel rushed and all I want is a little more. Haints and Hobwebs is a bit rushed but the story is good and I was on the edge of my seat trying to figure out just what the ghost wanted Gin to accomplish. I enjoyed the short story and found it a nice edition to the Elemental Assassin series.

cute. Gin is able to help a haint reunite with her love.

"definitely a haint and not a ghost."
"what's the difference?"
"for the most part, ghosts are just troublemakers. mean old souls who like to scare the living. they rattle chains, moan and groan, break mirrors, and generally make pests of themselves. but haints, now, haints have a specific purpose. a mission, if you will. they're clinging to this life for a reason and they can't or won't let go until that mission is completed, no matter how long it takes."

"a lot of vamps were like that. they lived so long that the past and the present often blurred together for them."

"screw you over six ways from sunday" [interesting turn of phrase]

A haunting experience for Gin

This book is not new it was released years ago as part of an anthology. It's early in Gins relationship with Owen they have only been together for a few weeks, Mab is still.her greatest enemy and she is struggling to establish a relationship with her estranged sister Bri. On one of her regular visits to Fletchers grave (her foster father) Gin notices a Haint hovering over a gravestone. The Haint realising Gin can see her starts following Gin everywhere she goes. She wants Gins help, but not being able to communicate it's going to.be a problem to.work out how anything Gin can do will help.someone who's been dead almost a hundred years.

Review first published on My Blog.

Gin is talking to Fletcher at his grave. He's gone but she still needs him from time to time and even if he can't answer, at least she can talk. This time though, she is not alone as she spies a Haint and one who seems to want something from her. Since Gin has been speaking to Fletcher, she can only assume the Haint wants revenge on someone and Gin has always been good at that.

This story was just short on everything. Characters fell a bit flat, the plot was even simpler than usual, but there was still plenty of inner monologue going on.

Although this was a very quick read, it was a great novella, telling the story of separated lovers who are brought back together again years and years later with the help of our favourite assassin Gin Blanco.

When a haint appears in the graveyard, Gin can see her and soon enough the haint follows her, with Gin being the only one who can see her and maybe the only one who can help her too. With Finn's investigative skills, Gin is soon on the case to help and reunite the haint with her long love departed love.

While it was just a novella, it was a fun one where ghosts are introduced and Gin, with the help of Owen, had to help a ghost find her long lost love whose soul is trapped. This is actually an older one that was republished, and that I read a long time ago (although I forgot!). I enjoyed it then, and I enjoyed it now.

Thanks for reminding me of this fun story, Jennifer! Just wish I hadn't paid for it twice (once years ago in paperback)!

From beyond...

Gin Blanco sees a haint in the cemetery. After a brief moment, the haint wants help from the retired assassin.

Discovering what woman wants sets Gin on a collision course with a bad, bad man. Can Gin help without getting killed herself?

In this novella, the author gives her reader another enjoyable read. Per usual, there is some humor, at least one Easter egg, sexy men, and a glimpse of Gin Blanco charm.
