All three books in the #1 New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling Dark Artifices trilogy are now available together in a collectible hardcover boxed set. The Dark Artifices is a sequel series to the internationally bestselling Mortal Instruments series.

Emma Carstairs is a Shadowhunter—the best in her generation. Together with her best friend and parabatai Julian Blackthorn, she patrols the streets of Los Angeles, where faeries—the most powerful of supernatural creatures—teeter on the edge of open war with Shadowhunters. But when bodies of murdered humans and faeries continue to turn up, Emma and Julian must strike an uneasy alliance with their supposed enemies in order to find the killer.

Meanwhile, an extremist faction of Shadowhunters called the Cohort will do anything to seize power and turn Shadowhunters against Downworlders once and for all. Emma, Julian, and their friends must embark on a series of quests from the Sunset Strip to the enchanted sea that pounds the beaches of Santa Monica, and deep into the realms of Faerie and beyond in order to save the Shadow World as they know it—even as a deadly and ancient curse threatens to destroy them and everyone they love.

Cassandra Clare was born to American parents in Tehran, Iran and spent much of her childhood travelling the world with her family, including one trek through the Himalayas as a toddler where she spent a month living in her father’s backpack. She lived in France, England and Switzerland before she was ten years old.

Since her family moved around so much she found familiarity in books and went everywhere with a book under her arm. She spent her high school years in Los Angeles where she used to write stories to amuse her classmates, including an epic novel called “The Beautiful Cassandra” based on a Jane Austen short story of the same name (and which later inspired her current pen name).

After college, Cassie lived in Los Angeles and New York where she worked at various entertainment magazines and even some rather suspect tabloids where she reported on Brad and Angelina’s world travels and Britney Spears’ wardrobe malfunctions. She started working on her YA novel, City of Bones, in 2004, inspired by the urban landscape of Manhattan, her favourite city. She turned to writing fantasy fiction full time in 2006 and hopes never to have to write about Paris Hilton again.
Cassie’s first professional writing sale was a short story called “The Girl’s Guide to Defeating the Dark Lord” in a Baen anthology of humor fantasy. Cassie hates working at home alone because she always gets distracted by reality TV shows and the antics of her cats, so she usually sets out to write in local coffee shops and restaurants. She likes to work in the company of her friends, who see that she sticks to her deadlines.

City of Bones was her first novel. Sword Catcher is her most recent novel.

Sometimes while reading Clare’s books I remember back in English class when my teachers would cross out sentences or even multiple paragraphs from my essays because they were unnecessary. There are so many chapters that don’t add anything to the story. Plus 60% of the books are just small talk. :(

Why was Emma so upset about Julian eating lettuce? Why is this even relevant to the story?

Characters
Livia and Octavian being nicknamed Livvy and Tavvy just bothered me so much, why not just one v? It was such an My NaMe IsN’t LiKe OtHeR nAmEs type of vibe.

The fact that they kept calling Diego perfect Diego made me want to barf.
Regarding the Spanish: I let this slide with Raphael because I love him. But I can’t do that anymore with this series. I’m not really sure how to explain but as someone who is bilingual, we can tell when bilingual characters are written by non-bilingual people.

Also, Regarding Raphael, HE WAS MY FAVORITE CHARACTER IN TMI SO

THE CONSTANT MENTION OF THE WORD PARABATAI. I GET IT. EMMA AND JULIAN. CLARY AND SIMON. JACE AND ALEC. JEM AND WILL I KNOW I KNOW I KNOW ALREADY.

Kit: I love Kit. He should have just stayed human.

Parabatais: A Forbidden Love Story had so much potential but ughhhhhh Emma and Julian are just UGH!!! Barf.

THE BOOKS
Lady Midnight: It was a good start to the trilogy, I’m pretty sure I gave it a good rating. It had a murder mystery and I though the whole finding bodies in ley lines thing pretty clever. But that’s it. As soon as I started reading Lord of Shadows I started losing interest. The story lines from TMI and TID just keep on repeating over and over and over again. CC’s literally just milking this cow as much as she can. Queen if Air and Darkness was a complete train wreck :(

Is Cassandra Clare losing her touch and just trying to profit off this once-amazing saga? Probably. Will I continue reading her books? Yeah, I love ranting about them :)

I really liked this book. I just have a hard time reading books that are a million pages long for no reason.

This series is, arguably, the least strong of all the Shadowhunters Chronicles. There are things I wholeheartedly enjoyed, such as the relationship of the characters, especially of the family Blackthorn and the friends who surrounds them. Also, I love that the book has more diversity and the representation doesn't feel cheap or lacking. I do, however, think is weaker than other series because (1) there is an open ending and as a consequence (2) many things are leave in the open. For example, the relationship between Tiberius Blackthorn and Kit Herondale and the dubious repercussions of some of the actions of the antagonists. I do understand that this series is the prequel of what will become the last series of the Shadowhunters Chronicles, The Wicked Powers, but I think that while the other sagas The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices where able to close with a proper ending, The Dark Artifices leave many things in the open to feel fulfill. Nevertheless, I am curious enough to see what happens next!

_______
The plot of the trilogy seems hackneyed and repetitive; the situations they present do not go entirely according to the world of shadow hunters presented in the previous sagas. Leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to social inclusion, with new characters whose heroism is to confront values, or even what they think is correct for the benefit of "a greater good".

MY GODDD I WOULD MARRY JULIAN PLS. Dreamy characters with such a dreamy romance–even more so if it's a forbidden one (NOT in an incestuous way like Game of Thrones thank god.. or even Clare's other series'). Love the epic battles it brings and the family it presents through the pages. You feel a real connection with the main characters and it's truly heartwarming (but sad as hell too).

The Dark Artifices, the Complete Collection (Boxed Set): Lady Midnight; Lord of Shadows; Queen of Air and Darkness are wonderful books by Cassandra. I had fogotten what an amazing read these books were. I am not sure why because I loved everything else as well. This fun collection is filled with all the elements you need to make you feel like you are right there with the characters.

Since these are bundled, I will rate them separately.

Lord of Shadows: 5 stars
The ending still got me and I really love the politics and the plot twists of these books, but also how we see Julian and Emma's relationship evolve and their character development—furthermore, Kit. Fantastic character, I love how he thought these protective little things about Ty when he didn't even know him for that long and when he met with Ty threatening him by holding a knife to his throat. Mostly, I just really loved the family dynamics in this book that really gave a special touch to it.

Queen of Air and Darkness: 6 stars
I know you normally only can rate a book 5 stars, but I saw someone do this for outstanding books that really grab you, and this book did that. It was an amazing ending to this series, cannot wait for the sequel series that will tie up the loose ends. But what really made me rate this book so high was the fact that one week before actually reading this book I read one scene: the battle scene. It had me sobbing. And now while reading it, I was crying all over again over that scene. So it deserves the high rating

TDA is a slow moving sequel to TMI. Picks up pace quite a bit in QOAAD (book 3) and does a great job setting the stage for the final trilogy to end the series.

This trilogy is a massive improvement on the whole from the writing in TMI, with better fleshed out characters and a far more contrived background to the storylines. There is the familiar forbidden love trope between the main characters (we can move on from this really) and their struggles are a bit of a drag. The other characters are what makes the story much more appealing. Cassie does a phenomenal job with her inclusivity of LGBTQIA characters in general, but TDA is especially good at this!

I’m gonna do a non-spoiler review on The Dark Artifices series as a whole!

I will start off saying that I loved this series. The plot was amazing and the characters were compelling. However, I would say TDA has the most going on in TSC so far. It does a great job at balancing characters and plot, but still having so many elements there’s no way to avoid some confusion.

Lady Midnight was the simplest of the 3, which is good for starting out, with a more straight line story. I didn’t like Emma at first (I think I’m going to make a whole post about comparing the main characters in TSC soon), but as I saw more of caring side, I liked her.

Lord of Shadows was easily my favorite of the bunch. It didn’t follow conventional storytelling but it kept me on my toes and it was done amazingly. Also, all of the characters have so many good moments and lines in this one.

Queen of Air and Darkness is definitely the most confusing. It’s also very sad, making it hard to read. I’m not saying that it’s bad; for the most part I think it was really good and there are things I really like (and really don’t) about the ending - see full review.

The cameos from TMI were all amazing, making me like those characters even more. Jace’s dialogue was laugh out loud funny and only got better. I wish we got more scenes with Emma and Clary; I know Emma’s older now and has been friends with Clary for years, but we don’t really get to see Clary mentor Emma. But it was amazing how much Malec we got, which I wasn’t expecting.

I would definitely say TDA is the most dynamic of TSC and has the some of the best villains. It might even have the best plot of TSC. I think in a lot of ways it’s better than TID, but I’m more attached to TID characters than the main characters of TDA. However, I can’t wait to see Kit, Ty, and Ash in The Wicked Powers.

Jules and Emma are INCREDIBLE characters, the sneaky bits of Jem and Tessa made my heart SO happy. But this being the 11th book in the shadow hunter series I've read I'm done with the heart break bullshit. The story here is INCREDIBLE but I am SO sick of Cassandras relationship arc its always the same and it has infuriated me so much, you know the couple are going to sort it out and the end of this book in particular promotes a toxic approach to relationships, T A L K T O E A C H O T H E R don't use destructive behaviour to yourself and those around you.
Sorry rant over, the story is great and you know I'm gunna finish the trilogy

This is a cute collection of fairy tales re-imagined, but if you aren't up to date on everything, you may need to remember previous books in order to get the references made. I wish there was a bit more detail each of the beautiful illustrations. Each one only has a sentence to explain the tale, and I really would have like about 2-3 paragraphs.

If you got this, it's cute and definitely worth keeping. If you missed out, you really aren't missing much.

If I had to describe the trilogy in one word, I would say love. If I had two words: stupid love. The Dark Artifices delves deeper into the consequences of the cold war, following The Mortal Instruments. Clare’s Shadowhunter books have always been about love, however, this trilogy takes love to the next level and it is shown as very synonymous to lust in the books. The story is extremely well woven, with intricate societal systems, characters with deep emotions which are sometimes dark, realistic events, and a creative concept overall. If I were to rate the trilogy as a whole without worrying about the parts I did or did not like, I would give it a 10/10. Cassandra Clare writes in a captivating way and, for the most part, the books are very eventful. She brings in new concepts in these books including the Land of Faery, alternate dimensions, ancient and powerful magic, and much more. There are so many twists in the plot that for the most part, it is thrilling and there is no way one could predict all the big events that would happen.

The characters are also developed in such a way that the readers empathize with them and the plot becomes much more interesting because of that. Julian Blackthorn is arguably the most interesting character in the series. We see early on that Julian is secretive and there is “always more when it comes to Julian Blackthorn” (somewhere from the second book, I can’t remember the exact place). His political mind quickly makes readers fall in love with him. Julian has a dark side to him which is also a reason why he is more interesting. The other characters we learn more about in the series are Emma, Cristina, Mark, Livvy, Ty, Kit, Kieran, Diana, Drusilia, and a few others, and they do not fail to impress.

The only part I don’t enjoy about these books is how childishly “love” is displayed. It is hard to distinguish it from lust in these books. Everybody in the trilogy somehow, miraculously, finds their one true love. Spoiler alert (although, it isn’t too hard to figure this part out early on), Julian and Emma love each other because they can’t seem to keep their hands off of each other, Kit starts loving Ty, Mark, Cristina, and Kieran fall into a love triangle which makes no sense at all, and Diana also falls for Gwyn. Some of the love stories shown in the series are quite deep and possibly realistic, however, most characters who fall in love in these series start off with an obsessive desire for the other person. Moreover, it is very cringy when literally everybody finds somebody that they love. Real life clearly doesn't work that way and, in my opinion, this is what ruins the series, especially when everything else in the series is extremely well written and quite realistic (minus the fantasy part). It is, however, important to note that there are some couples that are actually good in the series. Diana and Gwyn start off pretty slowly and they are both very mature, so the development of their bond would make a great story. Another one is Ty and Kit; without even knowing for sure that they are both gay, they fall for each other. It is realistic because (spoiler alert) they have a lot of ups and downs in their relationship, mostly downs, including the part where Kit leaves at the end because he thinks Ty is mad at him. Diego and Cristina used to date before but they break up and that part is also well scripted. At the end, we also see more about Magnus and Alec’s relationship and that is by far the most authentic relationship in the entire Shadowhunter series.

Overall, the series would have been a little better if it didn’t feel like it was written from the perspective of a hopeless romantic. Yet, I would definitely recommend the series for all the good and exciting parts. If you enjoyed The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices series, you will fall in love with The Dark Artifices, as it is the best amongst the three.

This trilogy is a sequel to The Mortal Instruments and focuses on the Blackthorn family, who's been through a lot, since both of the parents died in the war. Julian, though a teen himself, had to raise his siblings, since his older siblings were exiled due to being half-fae. He has a parabatai, Emma Carstairs, who's always helped him, but the big conflict is that they love each other romantically, which cannot be.
Meanwhile, there are some divisions within the clave, which ends up separating into the clave-in-exile (basically a version that accepts other races, like vampires and fae) and the cohort (an extremist side, that supports the ideas of Valentine).
I really enjoyed this trilogy. It's very heartfelt, especially when it comes to the Blackthorn family. Julian made a huge sacrifice, raising his siblings when he himself was a child. Losing his sister, Livia, was also heartbreaking since she was basically a daughter to him. I'm happy that in the end, he could get a chance to break the parabatai bond and travel with Emma, to finally get the youth he never had.
Another pair who was very affected with this death was Kit and Ty. Ty is the autistic twin of Livvy, and his plot to raise her from the Dead was so interesting. I love the representation of autistic people and how Kit always understood his needs. In the end, their separation scene was so painful. Kit is in love with Ty and I think Ty also loves Kit, even if he doesn't know it. They'll be the protagonists of the next series, so we'll see what happens.
Dru and Ash are also characters I'm intrigued by. Will Ash be evil like his father? Or will he break the cycle of abuse in the Morgenstern family?
This book also focuses on how hard it was for Mark in exile. While Helen was allowed to stay on a lone island with her wife, Mark was kidnapped by the Wild Hunt, a group of fae warriors. He suffered a lot, but he managed to find love in Kieran, a fae prince, and Cristina, a Shadowhunter. I love the inclusion of a polyamorous couple!

INFINITY STARS. I will never be whole again. This series made me laugh, cry, scream, cry some more. It broke my heart and put it back together more times than I could count. I went through 3 things of tabs and dried out 2 highlighters bc there was so much I wanted to come back to. The Blackthorns are such a special family, I love them like they’re my own. The secondary characters like Kieran and Christina also have all my love. Julian Blackthorn is way too damn sexy for his own good. The tension between him and Emma was OFF. THE. CHARTS. Forbidden love is one of my favorite tropes and my babies SERVED. They also made me appreciate friends to lovers more than I already did, which was no easy feat. SERIOUSLY THOUGH, JULIAN HAS NO BUSINESS MAKING ME KICK MY FEET & MELT LIKE A POPSICLE whilst making pterodactyl screech-like feral noises. I wanna marry him. Can I? Can I marry both Julian and Emma? Anything to be a part of the Blackthorn family, see Julian lean on things and flip his hair all deliciously and also eat my weight in pancakes every day. Did I mention he makes pancakes!? IN AN APRON, COVERED IN PAINT. It’s fine, I’m fiiiiiiiiNNNNEEEE.

In all seriousness, this series sealed an incredibly special place in my heart. A part of my soul will always live within in the walls of the LA Institute (preferably in Julian’s room, where we— OK FINE IM STOPPING). While I loved TID and still carry a BLAZING HOT torch for Will Herondale, I think I loved this series even more? And no, I will not choose between Julian & Will. As far as I’m concerned they are over 100ish years apart so therefore, I CAN HAVE BOTH. TESSA GOT TO DO IT SO WHY CANT I.

When we talk about the Shadowhunter Chronicles, one can never leave behind the runed skin of the angel-touched Shadowhunters, the warlock marks, the truthful yet deceitful faeries, the enmity of vampires and werewolves and the blissful ignorance of ‘mundanes’. The Shadowhunter Chronicles bring together many fictional elements thought of by our world.

William Herondale, Tessa Grey and Jem Carstairs steal the show as they should with ‘The Infernal Devices’ but the heartthrob of the entire series are the characters of ‘The Mortal Instruments’ and after.

The series takes instances of the demon world from cultures around the world. The demons represent evil and the Shadowhunters take up the mantle of defeating them. But, the author has never awarded them the role of the upholders of purity even if the authorities in the books believe it.

It has been a long waiting time for the conclusion of the Eldest Curses and the Last Hours trilogies. We only wish to get them soon so our wait can end.

Cassandra Clare you absolutely love to just kill me slowly in the best and most lovely literary ways 😭❤️

Lady Midnight ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Lord of Shadows ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Queen of Air and Darkness ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I can no longer choose a favorite Shadowhunters series 👑

Shadowhunters and Downworlders 🧚‍♀️ if you've read the others (and you definitely had to have if you're reading these) then you know

Battles of Politics 📚 why do I hate the sh*t in real life but literally skip showers to read about it in this world? It's so good!

Romance ❤️ and I'm talking much more angsty yet compelling than we've seen from Cassie ever before. I mean, a true friends to lovers complex 👏

This trilogy has literally everything we love from our Shadowhunters and MORE! We get a continuation of the story of Julian Blackthorn and Emma Carstairs that was started in City of Heavenly fire. It could not have possibly been written any better than it was. Not to mention, we get lots of cameos from our old faves, enough cameos that without them the story would be completely different. And a slew of brand new characters, I mean, Kit? Okay, NEW BOOK, I think I see you coming! ✨️

Have you read all of the other Shadowhunter books?
Do you love Cassandra Clare?
Just read the books 📚✨️❤️

i think it took me a while to get used to how old and mature the characters are, or at least are supposed to be. as opposed to the mortal instruments, the characters here are 18 and are thus expected to act like fully functioning adults.
and yeah, they were more mature than say jace or clary, but also they didn't really appeal to me as much. they didn't mess up as much, and were as a result less fun.
i did like the best friends to lovers forbidden romance trope, i think it was really really cute and both emma and julian were so cute with each other. i also liked julian's relationship with his siblings, and how he was so selfless when it came to them.
what kind of pissed me off was the forced sexual diversity or whatever. there's a transgender woman, a threesome, several queer/gay people living under the same roof. it was kind of "woke" as some people would put it. alec and magnus was cute and the characters would frequently joke about alec's sexuality. but... whatever is going on in the blackwood house is anything but cute.
and the disturbing lack of development in the minor characters also annoyed me so so much. like okay i get it they're not the stars of this show, but characters that remain static for 900 pages are not characters that sully the book.

I would say this is my least favourite of all of the Shadowhunter chronicles so far. But I still really enjoyed it and I have yet to read then next two so this could change!
I found the beginning to be VERY slow and faffy. There was quite a lot of world/ character building to begin with.
I absolutely adore Emma. I loved her back in COHF when she was younger and I loved reading about her grown and even more sassy and strong willed.
The friendship/ family bonds in this book are lovely, but I do however, struggle to remember who is who with the Blackthorn kids and how old they all are etc. The way CC has made this family/ group so diverse is applaudable as well.
As with all of the SH chronicles I once again love the crossovers/ connections of characters from the other series’… including Church!! I love that damn cat.
I loved the murder mystery/ seeking revenge aspect of this and there were plenty of little twists and turns that kept me hooked!
I do enjoy the whole forbidden romance as well, and I’m looking forward to see how it plays out because I do love Emma and Jules!
Overall I enjoyed how everything played out so far and I can’t wait to continue the series!

my thoughts in + and - are basically

+ yessss. Clearly a great story. Loved being in the shadowhunter world again. Sassy (and oh so many) characters, intricate storylines, and the last book was 36 hours worth of audiobook and that I actually listened to it all says A LOT.

- that said, though, I've re-read it once and determinedly skipped only to the parts I liked.

- well, the characters. It's inevitable that as someone who's read all other of CC's books I've quite started to feel as if I recognize her new characters. In that they're all pretty similar to her other characters. Especially in the dialogue - come on, how much witty banter can a book take, when everyone's witty banter sounds vaguely the same? That said, there were definitely new elements to the characters too though.

+ KIERAN MY FAVE. so relatable. so fantastic.
