Anthem of Infinity #1

First Song, Book One

Rate this book
It has been two years since the Shift—when most technology stopped working, and the laws of physics changed. Humanity has been brought to its knees. Like other survivors, Noah Henson has heard rumors of the Aelves. Among other guesses, predatory aliens seem as good as any other theory for what caused the Shift. But for Noah, everything else takes second place to survival, sometimes even self-respect…or any sort of decency. Lawless, post-apocalypse America had forced Noah to make many difficult decisions, and he has never seemed to choose correctly. However, despite hating himself, he doesn’t have the strength or the courage to change. He will get a lucky break in a big way, though—a mysterious orb with otherworldly power. In time, perhaps Noah will find another path. And if he does die during the Shift, maybe it won’t be the end of his story. Sometimes, another chance can be an opportunity for redemption.

Blaise Corvin served in the US Army in several roles. He has seen the best and the worst that humanity has to offer. He is a sucker for any hobby involving weapons, art, or improv.

He currently lives in Texas, in a house full of enough geeky memorabilia to start a museum.

He likes talking about himself in 3rd person and posting pictures of himself holding tarantulas. Sometimes, he pretends he is not an idiot with a terrible sense of humor.

It's all very eccentric.

Blaise currently writes mostly in the GameLit genre and LitRPG subgenre, exciting new classifications of fiction where characters either play a game (usually VR), or live in a world with game-like elements.

Delvers LLC is GameLit, lightly LitRPG, mostly a Fantasy/SciFi Adventure. Secret of the Old Ones is hard LitRPG, complete with XP and leveling...plus has Lovecraftian and steampunk elements (because why not?).

I truly believe first impressions matter. And this book gives a terrible first impression. If you like endless introspection and endless teenage angst, this is for you. Otherwise, move on.

Maybe the book gets better further in, but for that to happen, you need to slog your way through the first chapters. DNF

Interesting twist, good start

What I liked the most about this story is how it surprised me. As such, I won’t talk much of the plot. It is a light GameLit story, with an emphasis on a character with a bard archetype... and it takes a bit of time to fully realize itself. The story starts with an intriguing scenario - post apocalyptic where physics have changed.

This means people are back to something akin to Bronze Age tech, and running around with weapons and crossbows rather than guns. This makes for an interesting set up by itself, but it really starts diving into the new normal of the world... just before it gets to the juicy stuff.

That being said, the story really starts moving with gas around the 33% mark. I won’t say much beyond that, but when it came I was pleasantly surprised.

I recommend this book for Delvers LLC fans, Nora Hazard fans, as well as GameLit and post apocalyptic fans as well.

I’m looking forward to book 2.

One-shot

Started and finished the book in a single five hour session. While I wish the book had been longer, I also realize I would have had to wait longer to get to read it.

There's a couple of familiar themes, but, to me, were woven together in a unique way that felt new.

Looking forward to the rest of Noah's story!

Fantastic spin on post apocalyptic earth

What a fantastic read. I'm normally not a big fan of post apocalyptic books but this merges that genre with gamelit and nails it out of the park. In the forward, the authors stated that the MC wasn't very likeable to start and I'm glad they did as I really didn't like him but some things happened and he got a lot better.

I was enthralled by this book.

It started out with a damaged character that we got to see grow throughout the book in meaningful ways. The first section of the book I was waiting for a twist and when it finally came I became even more engrossed.

I finished this in one day and it turned out to be one of my favorite books of the year. If you’re a fan of settlement building, apocalypse, or realworld LitRPG then this is the book for you.

First Song has fantastic character and story development and really delivers in every aspect. If the second book is anything like the first then I expect to have another favorite of the year.

While it had an interesting premise, the execution just didn't work for me.

Way too much filler and descriptions of things that just don't matter to the story. I found myself skimming multiple pages at a time to find something worth reading. Even then, the writing was choppy and didn't feel immersive.

Basically if you want to read a long book about Doomsday prepping, you might like it.

I wanted to give the series a shot and at the halfway point I was thinking I might try the next book, but the climax was not an improvement and I won't be continuing.

What would you do if you got a second chance at life? You find yourself in a world where aliens with high tech have neutralised electricity. No cars, no internet, no phones or hospitals etc!! This is what happens to Noah and he finds himself unable to cope. He can’t believe what a sniveling coward he has become. It’s not just aliens he and others have to cope with but inhumanity by their own people. Then Noah meets ‘Doc’ and this starts a fundamental change in him.
Noah brings out so many emotions in the reader. At times you want to shake him. The important thing is that he makes you feel! Definitely 5 stars and looking forward to the next book!

Fun read

As it is usually the case with these authors books, things start slow and gradually build to "can't put it down" levels.

A nice entry into the genre with plenty of action to go around.

It reads like a meta-settlement build novel, if that helps.

An unexpected start to a fun journey

So I was excited that a dystopian gamelit book was coming out. There aren’t many where the real world becomes the game world. The start was rough. You have a hard time liking the MC. And there was a few times I wanted to yell and scream at him.

That’s the thing though. The book gave me strong emotions and it kept me moving forward into a interesting story of prepping for the end of the world and understanding how you relate to others. I had a lot of fun discovering this adventure. It has all the dystopian aspects I love. It is definitely a gamelit book. Very lite on character sheets and ability points. I liked that in this story. He wasn’t op and he has some advantages but he still had to work for them.
I have enjoyed many of this authors books and look forward the next addition.

4.5 would read again, if my to be read pile wasn't glaring at me

*Spoilers*
I don't like, no, I hate Time travel, but it may not be a problem for others. Other than that, I find the MC to be incredibly slow on the uptake, which wouldn't be a problem, except that he is supposed to be incredibly intelligent.

I will say though that, eventually, he does come off as quite brilliant, most of the time, later on. Intelligent MC are my favorite thing to read and this did not disappoint.

The Gamelit aspect is, unfortunately, rather weak for what is supposed to be a litrpg, BUT, this is such an enjoyable read I won't say one really misses out.

What a start....many more hopefully to come

An excellent read with a very good plot line and good MC(s). I thoroughly enjoyed this first in what I hope will be a long series.

The horror of humanity losing all our modern tech and descended to our base instincts is all too probable and this book doesn’t hide away from that fact.

There a few grammatical errors but only a few. My only concern was the total lack of Merriweathers after the MC meets them, with them only appearing again towards the end, why?

But as that’s the only real issue then I can only recommend this to anyone how wants a great read....

This book is good, like really good.

The author has managed to combine quite cliche elements to make an incredibly unique story. The MC'S journey is quite satisfying to read along with his great determination.

MC was written well with enough achievements and failures to be both incredibly amazing and quite human.

The set up for the new world was done well along with all the cool characters.
The firestarters were cool.

This book has done an amazing feat of being UNIQUE.

I wholly recommend this book.

If you are looking for a FULL ON LitRPG, this is not it. First Song has video game mechanics within the story, but does not take place in a game world. HOWEVER... this book is simply amazing and even if you are looking for a traditional LitRPG, I urge you to give this book a try. First Song is a VERY well written book that has insanely good character and story development. Blaise Corvin takes his time to tell the story he wants in the way he wants. I am only upset that the book is over and now I have to wait for future installments.

Book one

By chapter six there still wasn't any book to draw me into the hook, except for a very unlikable MC.
What I read was well done editing wise though.
I've dropped this series due totally to a lack of interest. I disliked the MC so strongly that I have no interest in following him.
Props must be given for how well done the authors did making the MC a waste of space.
4/10 Sorry guys this just wasn't for me.

Just couldn't get into it. Felt like the book was mostly filler. From the blurb and the cover you would think it would be a post apocalyptic book and it kind of is and kind of is not. I had alot of trouble finishing it.

From the Author

Outspan Foster primarily writes Young Adult stories.  Blaise Corvin generally writes adult Fantasy/Science Fiction.

Anthem of Infinity is a GameLit, Young Adult, post-apocalypse series featuring a young, modern-day bard. First Song, Book One includes dark themes and gritty violence, appropriate for a barbarous world where the strong take what they want, and safety does not truly exist.

Join Noah as he discovers that fate has more in store for him than merely selfish survival and cowardice.

If someone truly chooses to win back their self-worth, to do what's right, a greater challenge means they must work harder to succeed.

Wonderful Reincarnation/Isekai/Post apocalypse Novel

Having read this book years ago, and promptly forgotten about it, who would of thought that I would be returning today to write about it? Here is the thing: I have read several incarnations of this novel from various cultures and authors, from American, to Russian, to Chinese, and even to Korean in nature, and for whatever reason, this specific novel kept popping up in my head. The weaving plotline, subtle complexities, and masterful writing all deserve praise!!! If you enjoy LitRPG, post apocalyptic, and/or Reincarnation stories, then this novel can and well grab your attention. I don’t review every book I read, but coming back to this for a reread after years of contemplation, and months of trying to find the title (which I had originally forgotten), I have decided to attempt to do it justice. So thank you Blaise Corvin & Co, for a wonderful read, and to all of you readers out there; please give this one a chance.

I really enjoyed this book I finished it in one sitting. It says they wanted a main character that people wouldn't like in the beginning but I never saw any real reason not to like the guy. The book has some interesting elements and the beginning reminds me very much of The Postman, The majority of the book has a feel more similar to a Light Novel series titled Me, a Genius? I Was Reborn into Another World and I Think They've Got the Wrong Idea! that was never finished. I also see what I think is inspiration from a lot of other sources. While I enjoyed the book I did feel like after the initial events the the book drags a little and takes awhile to get going and shortly after it does it ends leaving you waiting for book two. It's a really enjoyable read and I highly recommend it.

Interesting post then pre apocalypse novel

An interesting concept. The authors made a dreg just surviving into a savior.

The main character is shown to be just a survivor. Doing whatever to stay alive a bit longer.
An interesting occurrence gives him magic a special class and shoots him back in time. He arrives in himself a decade before "The Shift". When all electricity, firearms, and explosives are somehow inhibited and the alien come. They bring magic with them too. Our hero strives as a boy to make money, stock up on food and water as well as arm and armor folks against this invasion.

First Song oddly has a what is essentially a prologue for about the first 1/4th of the book. That same first 1/4th is also pretty slow and not terribly enjoyable. It does pick up after that and become very enjoyable for most of the rest of the book. Due to what happens at that 1/4th mark, talking about any of the main plot is extremely spoiler heavy.

Suffice it to say, if you're reading this book and have low interest, at least keep going until you get to that point (you'll know it when you get there). I very nearly abandoned it early, and I'm glad I didn't.

A truly unique story. It mixes RPG, post-apocalypse, and reincarnation into something new.

It took a while to find its legs but once off and running it was unstoppable. With a sympathetic protagonist pitted against an enemy of unimaginable power, we get front row seats to an epic David versus Goliath battle. Or at least the set-up to the battle. Because it's only just begun.

If the set-up to the main conflict is this good, I can't wait for the next book.

Pretty decent first book in a series.

The story started off slow and took awhile to get interesting. The first 35% was just set up for the rest of the series. Overall it was good but slow to start.

Really good first book!!

This is a really good first book for this new series. I, personally didn't dislike the MC in the beginning of the book. I pitied him. None of us could ever really know how we ourselves would act and react to the end of our known world coming to an end. We can speculate all we want about what we ourselves would personally do and the actions we would take if something like this were to actually happen all we want but in the end we will never know until we are put into that type of situation for real. I guarantee that there would be people everywhere that believe, when faced with the real end of our known world, alot of people will quickly find out what kind of person they really are and what they are and are not willing to do for survivals sake. Adversity has always had the ability to draw out and showcase the type of person we really are. It is a tempering force that rips away the lies we tell ourselves about what type of person we believe ourselves to be. Showing ourselves and others who we really are deep down inside. So for those who have read this book and disliked the type of person the MC was in the beginning you should stop and think... if you find yourself living through the end of our known world, would you be and act any differently than the MC in the beginning of this book? How could you be sure you wouldn't turn out to be just like him if you had to live through the same circumstances?

Hands down, this is one of the best written LitRPG books I’ve read.

Admittedly, the beginning is pretty rough and the story is definitely dark. It’s also a weird post/pre-apocalypse tale. That being said, the writing is very well done and the story is actually inspiring, if you can stick through the first 10% of the book. Fans of LitRPG and survival should be pleased.

I will say that this is not a heavy or crunchy LitRPG story, but it does a good job of incorporating the few RPG elements it does have. This means that Noah, the hero, is not overpowered from the start, as he is mostly just a normal human. In fact, he starts off about as weak as a person can be without being an NPC. Sure, that all changes as the story progresses but it is through smart application of a key advantage and tons of hard work.

The most impactful element of the story is definitely the growth of the hero. It was a joy seeing him transform and rise against adversity, not just in strength but in character. As part of this journey, the book offers great insights into human behavior and an exploration of our darker side. I’m a fan of the author’s other work, including the Delvers LLC series, but this is his finest work to date and a real gem in the genre of LitRPG.

Not bad at all. I'm not usually a fan of post apocalyptic fiction or litrpg, but thankfully these elements took a backseat to character development and world building.

To keep this review spoiler free, I'll keep this next part relatively vague: one of this books flaws is that the first several chapters set up the expectation it's one genre, and then midway through the book it changes to a different set genres entirely.

The issue with this is that the first chapters set up a promise for what we can expect for the rest of the book. If I don't enjoy genre 1, I am likely to drop the book before we reach genre 2. If I love genre 1, I'm going to be let down by the latter half of the book which isn't what I was enjoying up to that point.

However, the quality of the writing is decent. And decent is far above average for these genres. So I did finish it.

I was looking forward to the second book, but it let me down.

In the second book, the author tries to introduce several new genres/troupes. The plot doesn't advance much, and characters feel flat. the star of the show seems to be justifying these new genres/troupes, rather than plot or characters.

The first part wasn't really enjoyable. The second part had it's moments.

This book seems to focus on the human elements more than the actual survivability. It's not bad but I read hundreds of "the spirit of humanity" books, I expected more shown of the actual preparing and training. I'm sure other people would enjoy this, especially as the litrpg elements are small, and there are no tables of stats.

The second author seems to have taken Blaise in hand, and stopped his habit of cliffhangers. I will probably pick up the second book when it's out sometime in the future, but if it's more about community and mankind coming together, instead of showing how mankind is surviving together I will probably drop the series. I didn't read this for the humanity, I read it for the survivability.
Also the YA feel wasn't too bad, but I hope it is completely removed in the future.

I enjoy stories of heroes, stories of villains, and stories of the average Joe - in that order. What I don’t like are stories of spineless little rats that crawl on their bellies while committing atrocities but having the gaul to complain about their lot in life.

That is Noah. He’s a worm, and he knows it. Yet like a worm, he doesn’t have the spine/intelligence/motivation to change it. So instead, he’s a slaver.

Then- spoiler: the moment he grows a pair, it is in front of a troupe of magic wielding elves who literally fly onto the scene and explode people with their thoughts. This is where he gets courage? This boy, who helped to hunt down children for trafficking.. suddenly grows a spine when the “doc” who cleaned the slaves up for sale is in trouble. 🙄🙄🙄

DNF @ chapter 9. Simply because I don’t want to experience this worms redemption arc.
