This 1893 reprint is largely devoted to Washington s life during the American Revolution, however, the main purpose according to the author was to give its young readers a distinct and vivid idea of the exalted character and priceless services of the man who was commonly referred to as the Father of his Country.
This classic book brings to life the deeds of George Washington for children in an interesting way. When your child reads this book or you read this book to your child, your child discovers the lost tools of being a true leader. This is a wonderful book for children to read to learn a few things about our first President of the United States of America.

I read this book with my son, and it was a very good book to show him the exemplary character traits that George Washington possessed. Much of the book focused on George as a military leader in the battles of the French and Indian War and the Revolutionary War, and unfortunately, my edition did not contain maps or pictures, so we needed to look them up to get a clearer picture of the battles the author was describing. The parts my son enjoyed most was George’s early life and the time after he returned from war. It is a good introductory book for whetting your appetite to want to learn more about George Washington’s full life.
Pollard did a decent job making the life of George Washington accessible for young people. I appreciated many of the more uncommon stories woven into the structure of his timeline, and how she portrayed his life so his character was easy to discern. The Rules of Civility are a great follow on to this book.
I'm giving it a 4-star rating because it taught me things about George Washington that I didn't know. I didn't completely enjoy reading it, to be honest, but for school it was worth it because it taught me plenty.
worst book i have EVER read!! i fell asleep when i was reading it! the only cool part (that was not even that cool)was when he killed a horse!! so my rating is below zero! -100!
This book was written for children, but it is not dumbed down for children like a lot of today's books are. It is perfectly readable for adults and it covers a lot of US History that schools in Canada don't teach. I would recommend this book for anyone, you will learn a lot about George Washington and the events of his life and in US history.
