Eric Frank Russell was a British author best known for his science fiction novels and short stories. Much of his work was first published in the United States, in John W. Campbell's Astounding Science Fiction and other pulp magazines. Russell also wrote horror fiction for Weird Tales, and non-fiction articles on Fortean topics. A few of his stories were published under pseudonyms, of which Duncan H. Munro was used most often.
“.. doing their jobs as though sentenced to them for crimes contemplated but not yet committed.”
“’Holy Moses!’ said Burman, fervently. ‘Let us not rely on the dubious assistance of Biblical characters,’ McNaught reproved. ‘Let us use the brains that God has given us.’”
This was a fun light read. Any story that includes dogs usually pleases me. I must say that building the Alamagoosa made much less sense than trying to ask "star command" what exactly an offog was. It would have made things a lot simpler.
Widely anthologized humourous short story, in the space opera vein. Rather than a "shaggy dog" story this is more of a "shredded dog" story, but fortunately not for real.
okay you know what that was actually funny and i truly burst out laughing by the last page. i read this as part of my personal reading challenge of going through all the hugo short story award winners/nominees and i was a bit hesitant to read this because it’s the first winner for this award and baka ma-disappoint ako sa taas ng expectations ko pero i was pleasantly surprised na that wasn't the case and ended up really enjoying this read.
I read it because it was recommended in a sf/fantasy group as a fun "dog" story and it was available for free on Baen.com. While there is a dog in the story, it turned out to be more of a shaggy dog story. The ending made me groan, but it was written well and made me laugh.
