Series: The Crawfords #1
Publication Date: 10/30/18

Wow! This is a fast-paced, intelligently written novel with sizzling sexual tension between Caleb and Mary. It is a delightfully refreshing read mostly because the hero isn’t a rake and the heroine isn’t a shrew. It is just a lovely romance story without a villain or a chase – nope, the whole story is the wonderful romance between these two characters. Even with all of that hot, sizzling tension between them, there still isn't any graphic encounters.

If you have read many of my reviews, you know that I think every romance novel should have an Epilogue. This book has what is probably the best epilogue I have ever read. It is forty years into the future and you see how strong and full their love still is and you learn what happens with the orphans and the children they had together. It is just sigh-worthy.

Caleb Maxwell Crawford never wanted nor expected to be a duke. When he stormed out of his family home ten-years earlier after a last and final argument with his father, his father was fine and healthy and his brother George was firmly in place as the heir. All Caleb wanted to do was to be an architect – to design and build homes. That is what lead to his last argument with his father – Caleb was supposed to be studying Religion in school, but he’d switched to Architecture – and when his father found out, he cut off his funds for schooling. Caleb went to France where he apprenticed and worked and found success and acclaim. Now, he has just returned to England to fling that success and acclaim at his father. However, when he walks into the house, he finds it is a house in mourning for the deaths of both his father and his older brother. Good Grief – he’s now a bloody Duke! He does his best to settle into the role, but he hates every minute of it and thinks he’ll go crazy if he doesn’t find some relief from it. Then, add his mother’s constant demands that he marry and he just has to escape. Luckily, his friend, Robert Moor, Viscount Aldridge, had a solution for him. Aldridge had a property in Cornwall where his ruined sister, Cassandra, lived with two other spinsters and a brood of orphaned children they had taken in. Aldridge needed the roof repaired and one of the outspoken spinsters, Mary, kept having run-ins with the men he sent to make the repairs. Maybe Caleb can take a break from being a duke and stay at that property and make those much-needed repairs before the house falls down.

Mary Clemens’ family isn’t of the aristocracy or even the gentry – they are firmly in the nouveau riche category. Five years ago, she was beautiful and pursued by a Marquess. She thought he loved her, he told her they would be married, then he disappeared and his father told her she certainly wasn’t good enough to marry his son and that there was no engagement and wouldn’t be one. Then, he spread rumors about her. Rather than believe her, her parents judged her guilty and made plans to send her to Scotland. Instead, she contacted her friend, Cassandra, who invited Mary to come to live with her. So, without telling her parents where she was going, she left London for Cornwall. She decided she would never marry and she certainly didn’t want anything to do with anyone in the aristocracy.

When Caleb meets Mary, the sparks fly. He has never been so strongly attracted to a female in his life. Caleb comes to like all of the ladies at the house and loves the children and they all like him as well. It is an all-around admiration fest – except they don’t know Caleb is a duke. Oops.

This gem of a book will delight you and entertain you as you watch two people, who are more similar than they think, find love and grow to learn that they must balance the simple life they both want with the duties of a title.

Caleb Crawford, the second son of a duke, has no desire to follow his father’s orders that he study to become a clergyman. His passion is architecture, and when his father learned that he changed his course of study, he pulled him out of school. Rather than become mired in a vocation that was not his calling, Caleb decides to leave his family and travel to the continent to continue his dream. As he left, he heard his father’s words telling him that he was nothing. Now, ten long years later, Caleb has returned home to show his father that he has become a successful architect. All those years of hard work and apprenticeship paid off, but it’s a hollow victory. Caleb learns that his father, and his older brother, the heir, have died. Though he doesn’t want it, Caleb is the new Duke of Camberly.

After weeks of trying his best to fulfill his ducal duties, Caleb is going a bit stir crazy, and needs a break. His friend, Aldridge, suggests he visit one of his properties, where his sister resides, and take care of some of the repairs needed. Caleb is eager to work with his hands again, and even more, looks forward to being an ordinary man, not a duke. Adridge’s sister was ruined years ago, and lives on the remote estate with her two friends, and the children they care for. One of those friends is Mary Clemens, a wealthy man’s daughter who was falsely accused of being a seductress, and left society so her sisters wouldn’t be tainted by her scandal.

Mary’s experience with society has made her determined to never let a man close again. In particular, she’s resentful of aristocrats, as is was a nobleman who started the rumor that ruined her. When Mary sees the handsome “handyman,” Caleb, she is smitten at first sight. Likewise, Caleb feels an instantaneous attraction to Mary. As they get to know each other, their feelings grow from superficial to friendship to genuine caring. Caleb learns of Mary’s scorn for aristocrats, and has never found the right moment to confess the truth.

Though Caleb also had no interest in marriage, he realizes that his feelings for Mary are the real deal. He knows that she also is seriously interested in him, and decides that he has to confess the truth, and hope that she will overcome her dislike of the nobility. Before he has the chance to plead his case, someone intrudes from his “other” life, and reveals Caleb’s true identity. What’s even worse, is that his family has a connection to Mary’s ruin. At this point, Mary wants nothing to do with Caleb and his world, so he returns to town, to plan his strategy.

Caleb truly is NO ORDINARY DUKE. He’s not interested in the trappings of society, and he knows his perfect match will be an unorthodox woman. He is such an honorable man, that he tried his best to resist Mary, trying to respect her feelings about nobles, while not truly ruining her. He accepts the duties he never wanted, yet plans to live his life so that it allows him to enjoy some of the things he loves. Mary is a strong woman, who voluntarily left town so that her sisters would have better opportunities in the marriage mart. Though she was devastated to learn the truth about Caleb, she was also wise enough to understand his reasoning. There is a sweet fairy-tale like ending, and a wonderful epilogue, giving us a glimpse far into the future. NO ORDINARY DUKE is a warm and romantic story with stellar characters who find a way to have it all.

Caleb Crawford spent ten years away after resisting the demands of his father. However, he also left his mother and brothers. All Caleb wanted to do was to build houses for a living. In order to do so, he had to strike out on his own. However, due to the tragic deaths of his father and older brother, Caleb has inherited the dukedom and all the riches and responsibilities that go along with it. After some months, Caleb needs a break, so he takes the opportunity to escape London to act as a laborer at one of his friend's estate. This brings him into contact with Mary Clemens.

Mary and her two friends, Cassandra and Emily, have formed an unlikely family. They are three women ruined in society and now care for several orphaned children. Mary's reasons for living in the country were due to heartbreak, so she has resigned herself to forever be on her own. Meeting Caleb begins to change that however.

Caleb keeps his identity a secret. Working with is hands is just what he needs right now. However, Caleb is quite drawn to Mary. Could she be the woman of his future? In wondering about how far to take his growing feelings, Caleb knows that one day soon he must resume is responsibilities.

No Ordinary Duke is the first book in the Crawford series. It is quite a touching read as both Caleb and Mary have problems with nobility. It is not the life Caleb ever thought he would live, and Mary had been hurt by a former Marquess, and has thus formed a great dislike for the upper class. What a treat watching these two come to terms with their desires and expectations.

The next book in this series is More Than a Rogue, which is Emily and Griffin's story.

Big Thumbs Up!
When Mary and Caleb meet it's an instant attraction but when she finds out he hasn't been telling her exactly who he is, that's when his troubles begin and he really has to work hard to sort things out.
Oh my. What a wonderful story this was!! It is so full of human emotions which are really believable that you can totally see each scene unfolding as if you were part of it.
Loved the story, loved the main and supporting characters and am definitely giving this one a big thumbs up!

I loved this one so much! It was moving and so sweet. They were so fitting towards each other❤️
Though she so easily forgave her parents…..
But still this one was really good! It’s an easy and not much of an drama book.

The epilogue though, I did not like. But that’s because it showed when they were old and soon were going to die.. And I do not want them to die. I don’t even want to think about it🫣😢

I absolutely loved this hidden identity story because it is different from most. I was hooked from the start with the shock of him finding out he is the Duke now. The moment they met sparks were flying and everyone could feel the tension between them. I'm sure my face was similar to his when he found out who had ruined her. They would take one step closer only to fall back two, but it was all worth it in the end. I loved how they brought everyone together again. The epilogue is one of the best I've read because it is not the typical one and gives updates on many people.

Mary has sworn to guard her heart and never be fooled again, but her heart had other plans. I loved her from the start because she spoke her mind to everyone. Even though she was stubborn she would listen and realize when she was wrong.

Caleb is defiantly not an ordinary duke and was going to live the way he wanted to. He wasn't what anyone would expect from a duke or most men. I loved that he was so honorably and wanted to make things right all around.

When Caleb Crawford returns to England after his ten years in France, he has one goal and that is to prove to his father that he is an accomplished architect but he is denied the opportunity. His father and his older brother were killed in a fire and now he is the new Duke. He seeks an escape, at least temporarily and goes to a small estate to fix the roof for his friend.

This estate is occupied by three young women that have been rejected by the ton and now they take in unwanted children and give them a home. Mary Clement is the most outspoken and a woman not afraid to express her views. Caleb is posing as a common laborer although he is of the hated artristricy, that has wronged these three gentle women.

The attraction is instant and mutual between Mary and Caleb, although he faces her prejudice and many other family issues to win her heart. No Ordinary Duke is a refreshing novel about how some of the ton sought to change the strict rules imposed upon them.

Good story of Mary, a woman shunned by society and her parents, and Caleb, a man returning to England to show his father how successful he has been as an architect in France. Upon returning, Caleb finds his father and older brother have both died, making him Duke. Suffering under the weight of the responsibility, he agrees to go to his friend's house in the country and make repairs. He presents himself as Mr. Crawford and works on the roof and house for three women and children who live there. He meets and falls in love with Mary. But Mary makes clear her dislike of the aristocracy because of something that happened in her past. Can Caleb convince her to marry him despite the fact he is a Duke?

O Lord did I struggle though this book. It was boring. It was predictable. The “chemistry” between the two love interests was comical. Virtually every character was flat as a board. I am proud that I made the effort to make it all the way to the end of this book to report that you should not. I feel badly because I received this free through a. Goodreads giveaway. I hate to give it a bad review but it was like romance fanfic.

No Ordinary Duke is part of The Crawfords Series by Sophie Barnes.

Caleb Maxwell Crawford is the second son of Camberly. He wet abroad to study architecture against his father’s wishes. He wanted to show his father he could be a success. He returned with awards and drawings to prove his expertise to his father but found his father and older brother had recently died in a stable fire. He would now be the Duke of Camberly.
He’s shocked and reluctant, but he does his duty. After a few weeks and as tension mounts from his mother to find a wife, his friend Robert Moor, Viscount Aldridge gives him a chance to escape temporarily. He goes to a property his friend owns to fix a large roof and a few things. Giving him a chance to be a builder again and be an ordinary man for a little time. His friend’s sister and a few lady friends run a home for children at this property.
Mary Clemmons is a spinster who lives with the other ladies. Cassandra, the Viscount’s sister, and Emily. Mary was jilted by a Duke’s son because his father thought she wasn’t right material for marriage to his son. Leaving her with a serious hatred of the titled.
He introduces himself as Mr. Crawford, not exactly a lie, and that he was sent by the Viscount to make repairs on the home. He and Mary are attracted immediately, but both try to keep their distance.
Author Sophie Barnes has written an intriguing and inventive story of the times. From the issues of being from a titled family, but not the heir; to the issues of women who are unlucky at romance and have been scandalized by circumstances. The characters are endearing and believable. The situations and conversations are both complicated and realistic. The romance is both sweet and builds to sizzling. She has written an inventive solution to the situation and very romantic.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this story and if you love historical romance, be sure to grab a copy. I’ll be glad to read more from this author and I believe you will too.

Review originally posted here: https://courtneyreadsromancesite.word...

No Ordinary Duke is another sweet book from Sophie Barnes, and has a lot of promise as a series starter. One of the things I like about her work is that she writes heroes who are more likable rather than the standard alpha-douche. Even her dukes aren’t your typical, lording-over-everyone type, and, as the title suggests, Caleb is no exception. I love that he is working to balance his love for architecture and building things with his new, unexpected responsibilities as duke. And while the deception of hiding who he was did go on a trifle long, especially when he found out about Mary’s connection to his family, I ultimately appreciated how honorable he was.

Mary took a bit longer to get to know and like. However, I did come to warm to her and understand where she was coming from, especially with her past of having faced rejection by a marquess and being tossed out by her family to avoid scandal.

One of the main issues I had was with the pacing. I felt it worked well for the first half, because he was keeping this secret, but they were also falling in love. But once she was reconciled with her family and they started courting officially, it started to move at snail’s pace with nothing going on, which is saying a lot, as it’s not an overly long book, at least page wise. There was no conflict, no “dark” moment and reconciliation…everything seemed to be done too early and with the ending dragged out to fit the length of a novel.

On the whole, this was a good book, and I’ll definitely continue to look forward to more of Sophie Barnes’ work, even if this one wasn’t my favorite. But I would recommend this to fans of historical romance, especially those who love and look for nice guy heroes.

My first book by Sophie Barnes and I'm an instant fan. This story was absolutely brilliant. The chemistry and heat between Mary and Caleb was so hot. Even if all we got was one kiss right uptile the end of the story. The banter between them and the side characters was so witty it had me laughing out loud at times. I loved how much effort Caleb invested to proved to Mary he was so much more than his tittle. And I loved Mary and her ability to not take crap from anyone even that "anyone" is a Duke.

I recommend this book to all who are in search for a quick, fun and interesting HR book. Huge 5* from me.

He doesn’t want to be a
Duke. He enjoyed it he was doing. He was living the life he wanted. To get away from everything he helps his friend by going to the home of his sister and helping her prepare the home that she into other friends are living in. Unfortunately as they begin to build each other and realizes that he’s living a lie is not sure how to tell her the truth. Then the fun begins. A well written and entertaining story with a happy ending. What more could you want out of a book??

An enjoyable read. An odd combination of a quick (too quick, in my opinion) attraction and a slow (too slow) resolution. That said, it's well written and I liked the characters. I'd be interested in reading the next one (which isn't out until June 2019) if the reviews indicate it's good.

Caleb Maxwell Crawford is returning to his family’s home on Grosvenor Square. He has been gone for 10 years perfecting his skills as an architect. Now, he is back to prove to his father that he is a success. But there is only his mother to greet him. His father and older brother have recently been killed in a fire. Now, Caleb is the Duke of Camberly.

Caleb is renewing his friendship with Robert Moor, Viscount Aldridge. Caleb is saying that his mother is pressuring him to find a wife, but he is not ready to do so and feels like he needs to get away for awhile. So, Robert asks him to go to his country estate, Clearview, in Cornwall to oversee some repairs. The place is inhabited bay his sister, Cassandra, and her two friends, one Mary Clemens, plus some orphans they care for. One woman had a child out of wedlock and Miss Clemens had been led to believe she would be marrying a marquess, however, the man’s father did not approve of her so he dropped her. Humiliated, her family banished her.

When he arrives, Caleb introduces himself as simply Mr. Crawford and starts repairing the roof himself. He enjoys the happy interaction with the children and the young women. Before long, Caleb learns that it was his deceased brother who courted and then shunned Mary. He is furious because by then he and Mary have begun an attraction. When she learns that Caleb is a duke and brother to the man who had treated her so badly, she wants nothing to do with him. Is there someway they can come together and fall in love?

Once again, Sophie Barnes has written a splendidly sweet romance novel. I loved Caleb and Mary together and the way he is always so gentlemanly with her. Well done!

Scandal, mystic, and wanting to be ordinary. That is all anyone wants, just to be wanted for ones self. So, why not just forgo the titles for a little while, what could it hurt? More than you know.

Caleb Crawford left home, second son, as he wanted to prove to his disapproving father that HE was someone important, worthy. Having been gone for ten years after storming out after an ugly argument with his father. With all the proof to show he made himself into just what he wanted, only to be too late. He arrived the day of the funeral, after it was over, to learn that both his father and older brother perished in a fire.

With feeling the pressure getting to him, he is with his friend Viscount Aldridge, he hits a reprieve out of the blue. Aldridge's has been supporting his sister and daughter but the house needs repairs that the ladies have used it on other things. Now he has the option to help and work with his hands again.

Upon arriving he is immediately attracted to Miss Mary Clemens. Now as they get to know each other it is with respect, admiration, and the future in mind. Caleb knows that he is there the repairs and the break but Mary was throwing him for a loop. He courts he with the idea of marrying her only to have it all ruined by his brother Griffin.

Now back in London he sets things in motion as long as the past stays there. To find out the obstacle that needs to be overcome you will need to read the book. I purposely didn't tell you much about Mary so you will have the intrigue and mystery of learning her for yourself.

This is a delightful recency room full of witty banter, colorful characters and some mystery.

This entertaining Historical romance is about Miss Mary Clemens, a wealthy tradesman's daughter who is already regarded as a spinster at twenty five years old. She lives in the country with her two friends (also spinsters) and they take care of several orphaned children.

Caleb Crawford, the new Duke of Camberley is an architect and craftsman who has recently returned from France after having lived abroad for ten years following a disagreement with his parents. He has returned to London and has been there for six months but he is already feeling stifled by all his ducal obligations.

Caleb hatches a plan with his friend and he moves to his friend's estate for a few weeks as the manor house is in need of an urgent roof repair. There he meets the outspoken, feisty and very beautiful Mary. Theirs is an instant attraction but due to his ruse, Caleb cannot confess who he really is.

Through a series of events and an unexpected visitor, he is found out and Mary, being terribly hurt asks him to leave her alone. Caleb now has to hatch a plan to win his lady's love back.

This was a lovely read with an interesting storyline and likeable characters. There was a charming epilogue long into the future which really rounded the story off very well.

I loved the way these women were so supportive of each other. I'm sure glad I didn't grow up during the regency period. I would have hated all the "rules" that women especially had to abide by. Why is it fair that men could go around screwing women of ill repute or widows who no longer had to abide but such strict rules and yet if a woman was caught just kissing a man who wasn't her betrothed, she was sent away in shame and ridicule. It was disgusting!!! But I love how these women managed to be so supportive and with the help of the older brother of one of the three was able to gain some independence. I am planning on reading the next one of the three piece trilogy, since I really love the characters so well.

A wonderful read! I could hardly put it down. A great start to the Crawford series. Caleb came home after 10 years to show his father his success. He came home to find out his father and brother perished in a fire and he was the new Duke.
This was something Caleb never wanted so after putting things together he went to a friends country estate to act as a handy man and fix the roof. What he encountered was a woman he could not resist.
Mary Clemens was sent away after a kiss caused a scandal. She thought they meant something but his father the Duke forbade it.
But when she met Caleb sparks flew. He knew he should tell her he was but couldn't.
Can these two over come adversity's, she about nobleman and he wanting to be an unconventional Duke!

This book was such a joy to read! Caleb and Mary met under unusual circumstances but were drawn together by that invisible tether know as Love at First Site. Okay, maybe it was more of an intense interest at first sight. Beleaguered by his new duties as Duke, Caleb retreated to the country to help a friend out with one of his floundering properties. Well, as you might imagine, he couldn’t just go up to the door of the old house where 3 women who were considered social misfits lived with 5 children of varied ages in his Duke’s clothing. Thus his new persona was born; the new guy to fix their roof. Overcoming unbelievably uncanny obstacles that were Never foreseen, a complicated relationship began. Wonderfully written with very engaging characters, this one is easy to recommend! 😍

Interesting Regency romance with a twist. When Caleb returns from a prolonged vacation in France to further study architecture, he learns both his father and brother, the heir, perished in a fire. Now he was duke but he didn't want the job. Taking a reprieve to contemplate matters, he ends up at a friend's sister's cottage to help with repairs. There he meets the sister's friend Mary and becomes quite enamored. However, the three women have started a small orphanage after being socially ostracized from Society. In this intertwined story, there needs to be major compromises and forgiveness before any romance can evolve. Mostly clean with a rather non-descriptive marriage bedroom scene for those who enjoy a good Regency story.

Oh, how I dislike stories where one of the main character's are not honest with each other. This went on through most of the story. It ruins it for me, because you know how it is going to turn out - secret discovered, relationship ruined.

That is exactly what happened here. Because I was always waiting for the shoe to drop on their relationship, it was hard to see them as a couple.

There is a twist involving the h that I didn't see coming at all. We have only kissing prior to marriage, lovemaking within. Heat level 1.5 out of 5.

No cheating, no cliffhanger, HEA, and a small tad of spice. (ljb)

I was pleasantly surprised by this one. Caleb Crawford was indeed no ordinary Duke, and Miss Mary Clemens was quite a match for him.

I kept waiting and waiting for him to let her know if his social status. And then, the revelation was inadvertent … and the second half drama ensued.

But all’s well that ends well. It isn’t often that the Epilogue goes so far into the future, and I am glad (and not at all surprised) that they are still living happily ever after. 🥰

Now I am indeed tempted to purchase the other two books in the series to see how Emily and Griffin, and Cassandra and Devlin, each get their HEAs.
