Enki Zakanin just wants peace and quiet. He's completed his mission, and on the journey back to the Kordolian Fleet Station, he'd prefer to be left alone so he can manage the literal demon inside his head.
Alone.
So when a strange distress call breaks the silence, his first instinct is to ignore the signal. Why would anyone be foolish enough to broadcast an open signal in the Ninth Sector?
My name is Layla dela Cruz. I need your help.
A human? What in Kaiin's Hells is she doing this far into Sector Nine?
Now, somehow, he has to go and get her.
After all, he's given her his word.
Shattered Silence is Book 2 in the Darkstar Mercenaries series. It features a lethal silver-skinned alien hero, a human heroine, and the usual action, violence, steamy sex scenes, and HFN ("happy for now") ending.
Even though there were a lot of similarities (boarding on cookie cutter territory), I enjoyed this book slightly better than the first one.
As much as I dislike insta love, I’m willing to go with it in this series because of the whole fated mate thing. At least the insta is felt by both the hero and the heroine, so there’s very little relationship angst. And there’s also none of the one-sided reverence nonsense. The heroines love and protect as fiercely as the heroes. They’re equals. The heroines aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty. They adapt and accept that it’s kill or be killed. Simpering damsels in distressed be damned!!!
This series is marketed as erotica. I have to disagree because not only are the sex scenes very few, they are also very forgettable. This series is fasted paced, action packed and violent. The best part for me though…JF Harding narrates. *sigh*
The following ratings are out of 5: Romance: 💙❤️💚💜 Steam: 🔥🔥🔥 Story/Plot: 📕📗📘📙📔 World building: 🌏🌍🌏🌎🌍 Character development: 😊😘😟😄🥰 Narration: 🎙🎙🎙🎙 Narration Type: Solo Narration
The Hero:Enki - he is a Kordolian and was one of ten in the first division. He is a mercenary and one of the most brutal fighters in the nine galaxies. He just completed his mission to find and detain a Callidum seller at the outlaw space station, Zarhab Groht. The seller is in a brig on a spaceship which is on its way to the Kordolian Fleet Station. Enki has a parasite which infected his body, a Tharian consciousness is inside him and nobody has been able to figure out how to get rid of it without destroying his own consciousness. So, he just tried to ignore the voice in his mind.
The heroine:Layla - she is a former VR star, drifting in the ninth sector in an escape pod. She has no idea of where she is or how to save herself. She had been preparing herself to die, nearly going mad from the loneliness and with nothing to look at besides the walls around her in the small pod. She had been on the passenger transport, the starship Malachi, en route to her new home, a secret enclave on Meridian Seven for the wealthy. Micrometeorites had slammed into the ship and smashed it up. She had checked and found no survivors aboard the Malachi and had run to her pod. She was stuck on the pod that hadn’t fully ejected from the ship.
The Story: Enki was traveling through space and since he couldn’t sleep due to the Tharian inside him, he got a notification of an open signal. He was surprised to find another ship in the outer sectors, so he accepted the signal. He heard a human female singing. The noise bothered him so he said Stop and she did. She was alone and happy to hear another voice in the vast emptiness of space in the outer sectors.
I liked the first book in this series so was exited for this book. Enki was an odd Hero, with the voice of one of his enemies inside his head. Before the Kordolian empire fell, they had been a race that subdued other races that weren’t as strong as them. The Tharian’s were one of those races and the voice inside Enki was not fond of the Kordolians, so was constantly giving Enki grief. I really liked this book because the storylines were so good. Much better than in most alien romance.
This audiobook was done in dual points of view via Solo narration. Like the first book in this series, it was narrated by J.F. Harding. Though I do like dual or duet narration a lot more than Solo narration, I really liked J.F. Harding’s narration. He has a deep voice and is very good at showing emotion through his voice and great at doing different voices for different characters.
Not my favorite in the series, and I have LOVED these Kordolians. Layla, meh. I'm not a huge fan of stories about actors/actresses, and this is probably why she just didn't appeal. Plus the reasons behind her running from Earth in the first place made her seem weak.
The twist for Enki, and his internal battle was interesting but just felt odd. Not sure why. I'm wishy-washy because this one just didn't have the emotional impact for me - and I love how these "scary guys of the universe" fall for Earth women.
However, I do like how both the main characters have such tenacity in a fight. It makes these sequences terrific. The desperation and the sheer will leap off the page.
I will definitely tune in for more Darkstar Mercenaries!
Enki has been through more betrayal and pain than most. Being possessed by a non-corporeal entity also has a way a playing with your sanity. The only thing that breaks through his rock-hard shell is a faint distress call by a human female. He's somehow drawn to Layla and must save her.
What I've discovered about Ms. Carven's writing - she's good at worldbuilding and when she focuses on stories where there's an immediate danger to escape from, she can really maintain the tension and keep me turning that page late into the night.
Layla dela Cruz is an actress who's trying to escape from a huge scandal back on Earth and has been sent to a far off planet to start fresh, kind of like that Jennifer Lawrence/Chris Pratt movie, Passengers. She's supposed to be cryo-sleep during the journey and then land on a far off planet and start fresh. Except an accident happens and she finds herself stuck in a malfunctioning escape pod, drifting through space when Enki, one of the First Division Warriors picks up her signal. When Enki discovers that other Kordolians have also discovered Layla's distress signal, the race is on to save her and get her out of their clutches and yep, romance happens.
I really enjoyed the way I was invested in the outcome of this escape and that the 'verse continues to expand in a way that I'm not exactly what's going to happen next, but I do know I want to keep reading. If you like alien sci-fi romances, you may enjoy this.
Yet another stunning, thrilling, amazing installment in this series. Absolutely gives me everything I want, and then some fun and exciting plot twists!
Shattered Silence had an interesting, captivating story. I couldn't stop reading it. Yes, there were a few stuff that bothered me—plot-wise—but the good far outweighed the bad so I promptly forgive and forgot them. There were also hints about, I pressume, the next book in this series that I found hugely intriguing so... write faster, Anna Carven, please! *wink, wink*
I don't know if I'll ever get tired of these growly, dangerous Kordolians. The only time they show a softer side is with their special someone and even those times are lined with a little steel. I mean, they ARE fierce, unpredictable mercenaries who are part of an empire that is only no longer ruling the galaxy because these specific soldiers rose up and toppled them. You gotta expect a few rougher than normal edges with them.
That said, Enki is a little more dangerous than most. The entity inside his head leaves him skating a fine line between control and chaotic destruction. He needs his brothers in arms and the missions he's sent on to help keep him centered. Then he meets a human who needs him and suddenly she's his everything.
My heart eyes are out of control right now.
For all Enki is hard and abrupt in his first meeting with Layla, he becomes her touchstone. Without him, she would have died. Or gone mad. But probably just died. Given the extreme circumstances under which they met, things could have gone badly. I mean, being stranded in space, picked up by rogue Kordolians, and nearly used as a mad scientist's experimental chew toy can get a girl down.
Instead, she keeps it together and does what she needs to do to keep Enki on an even keel. The rest, as they say, is history. Sexy, sexy history.
Still loving these alien badasses and the women who spark their interest. SO HARD. Who's going to be next to fall? I'm ready to find out!
Enki Zakanin has been the white elephant in the room character in previous installments. This story blows open the back history which lead to his current situation. :)
This story was improved from other installments I've read which makes me hopeful that it might be a viable series I can get on board on.
I really liked this one. Both Enki and Layla were well written with secrets to reveal. The Tharian parasite was such an interesting and intriguing aspect, giving suspense and adding another dimension to the story.
I wish we would have seen more about Alexis and Anuk at the end, but I’m guessing they may return in a future book.
Really like the Dark Star mercenaries. Their traits and danger make them hot like fire. Yes, please gimme more.
Enki has a Tharian spirit stuck in his head. It's driving him nuts. Layla Dela Cruz is an actress who's trying to escape a scandal back on Earth. Her ship, the Malachai was headed for a secret planet that was exotic and lush maintained for Earth's wealthiest people. Except the ship that she was on gets hit by millions of tiny asteroids and she's the only one that manages to escape alive. Enki feels compelled to rescue her. In the rescue attempt they face bad Kordolians and two other bad alien races. Enki also finds more information about who is selling Kordolian weapons on the black market. And some pretty creepy weird stuff happens concerning the only two other females that had been on the Malachai with Layla. I enjoyed this story. Both Enki and Layla got good closure for the issues each was dealing with in the beginning of the story. I must add though that throughout the Dark Planet Warriors and the Darkstar Mercenaries series I find a lot of typos.
2.5 stars. Not my fave by this author, probably because the heroine wasn't my kinda girl, but still a nice addition to this spin-off series. I just like a bit more push/pull and dramatic/sexual tension in my stories. I am just a drama-llama, I guess!
Enki, a Kordolian highborn mercenary and warrior of the First Division, rescues Layla, a human international superstar on her way to an oasis planet. Her transport ship was torn apart by space junk, and she survived by getting into an escape pod. Enki is a tormented man, he has a parasite living inside him, always fighting for control. He realises Kayla is his mate, but how can he be the mate she needs with the parasite always fighting him? Interesting take on the Kordolian warriors.
As long as there are Kordolians , I will keep Reading !!!
What a touching story!! At first , I ONLY wanted to read about Abby and her General Tarak. And then I was like , aww what the heck , and just got the whole series!! These Kordolians totally Rock !!
In this story , poor Layla has run from Earth and is on her way to a new beginning , on a planet far , far away. She and her fellow travelers are put into cryo sleep until they get there......
Enki is a First Division Warrior. He likes to be alone when he works, and his brothers understand that he is a lone wolf, basically. Only the General and the medic knows why. Enki finds himself restless after completing a mission, and hears a plea over the comms radio , ...' ...please , somebody out there , please help me ...." Being " peacekeepers of the Galaxy " now , Enki figures that he can persuade his brothers the help rescue this human female . And as with any good story, Everything goes to hell Fast !!! Enki and his First Division Warriors do what they do best..... Finish the mission . And , as with some of his brothers, " mating fever " , is tossed in the wash , and the story becomes a magnificent , sexy Read !!! Can't wait to rad More of these Sexy , Silver Kordolians !!
This story is much better than the last book. Enki and Layla were likeable. Layla held her own when it got tuff. She showed those pompous old Empire guys a thing or two when it came to underestimating humans. Enki was a crazy Kordolian with a ghost trapped in his head. Together they had great chemistry, had a great adventure, and I loved it!
What is there not to love about this book? Enki was engrossing as the damaged hero with dark secrets. Layla was likable as the heroine who (was and)saw herself as weak, but who became brave and strong through the story. I am looking forward to the next Darkstar book.
I loved this addition to the Kardolians and their mates! An action sci-fi romance with multiple problems to overcome. Maybe the next will be about the host?!
3.5 stars. I loved Enki and Layla, but this one was missing the action of the first book in this series, and I needed a bit more substance. Things happened too fast and that left a gap. Still, great characters, and I love this alien universe Anna Carven has created. It's unique and interesting and definitely sexy.
"And now he had found the mythical female organ called the clitoris; that tiny, delicate pearl of flesh which gave him such great power." Does the author mean the g-spot? Because the clit isn't mythical... it's literally the cherry on top, you can't miss it.
Anyway, I wasn't sure what I was getting into here because I've not read the previous books in this series. I knew I might not understand some things and while that was definitely the case, it wasn't too much. I assume some events and relationships were more fully explained previously, but I got the point I think.
And I really had a good time reading this. It wasn't too dark, but it did have some pretty tense and dramatic moments that left me choking back tears. I enjoyed the romantic pairing and would have been pleased to read more stories featuring them - the cold-hearted alien and the enduring Earthling. The hero was more developed than the female, but I think that was appropriate here. She didn't really need any character development, she was great as-is while the hero needed a little bit of work. I do wish we had gotten to see a little more of their HEA - the ending felt a bit abrupt and there were a few plot threads that weren't exactly dangling but could have been explored just a teensy bit more. Also, none of that "I'm leaving you for your own good" or "running away from safety because girls are dumb and fickle" nonsense. Good shit, man.
Overall, I'm really pleased with this blind reading. I don't think I'm interested in the previous stories because I just don't feel drawn in by the blurbs. But I like the world and the aliens, so I'll definitely keep my eye out for future releases. I also enjoyed the writing, so my next stop is the author's profile to see what other goodies she's got published.
I'm enjoying this series. I really liked this Hero and while I think more could have been explored with the heroine it was still a fun read. There is a biggish continuity error at the end that irked me, just about what had already been told to the mate and what they did/didn't know about each other. But overall this has been a fun read through and considering I haven't yet read the first series I like that this was still understandable.
I do believed that Enki is my favourite Kordolian Hero. For the longest time Tarak (from the original Dark Planet Warriors series) has been my favourite but quiet Enki sneaked up on me. I dare say that if you're not familiar with the DPW series, you might not quite appreciate this world. Highly suggest you start with that series and make your way to the Darkstar Mercenaries.
