Agent Will Trent of the GBI was undercover as an ex-con; a man by the name of Bill Black. The motorcycle outside the grimy, rundown Georgia service station he'd stopped at was part of his cover. While waiting inside, suddenly all hell broke loose. A daylight robbery was taking place; shots were fired; men were down and a wounded man was fleeing the scene in an old pick-up. Dialling 911, Will then jumped on his bike and took off after the truck. What happened in the next few hours saw the GBI on scene, along with the local cops and the county force. What would be the outcome for Will - still undercover, under arrest and being chewed out by his boss, Amanda Wagner?

Busted is #6.5 in the Will Trent series by Karin Slaughter and I loved it! Fast paced, absolutely full on action from beginning to end, filled with tension and in no way lacking because of its length. Very entertaining! And recommended.

Will Trent stops by a convenience store while on his way to his undercover assignment and is delayed by a slow working frozen coke machine. All hell breaks loose when a man with a rifle comes in to rob the store. Next thing you know, one man is dead, two are in the hospital and Will, Faith and Amanda are stuck with a bunch of lying witnesses and participants as they try to sort out what happened really. Lots of misdirection and real characters but it was a very interesting case.

It's a very short story but as usual is full of clever intrigue and good police work by the three. Kathleen Early narrates it perfectly.

5 Stars for Busted: Will Trent, Book 6.5 (audiobook) by Karin Slaughter read by Kathleen Early.

Will’s day goes sideways all because of an ICEE. Is he going to die or just get in trouble?
He really uncovers a lot of crime and stupidity.

“You’d put me in jail if you could.”
“Prison,” he told her.
“Jail is where you await trial. Prison is where you go after you’re sentenced.”

Icee machine

First Sentence: Will Trent let out a long, mournful sigh as he stared at the blinking red light on the frozen Coke machine

I will literally read anything with Will Trent in...
I had to sit around and wait; so I decided to make it worth while.
The only problem is now the wait is over and I need more Trent

I like these little half versions in this series. This one features a convenience store hold-up gone wrong. Of course, Will Trent happened to be in the store when the action took place.

There's shooting, a highway chase, and a mystery to solve.

If you're current on your Will Trent info, you know Will has a poor diet. He likes his sweets. Breakfast sometimes involves a donut and for lunch usually a hotdog.

In Busted, Will stops at a convenience store to get himself an ICEE frozen drink when bullets start flying. But Will is not dressed with his usual 3-piece-suit. Instead, he's in disguise as his undercover character, ex-con Bill Black.

Will's bad luck has him there at the wrong time and at the wrong place. Or maybe he's at the right place and he's there to prevent further damage. The aftermath leaves too many bodies for the GBI. Piecing together the reason for the crime and the culprit is up to Will, Faith, and Amanda.

As always, I love Will's character. Amanda gives him such a hard time but the truth is that Will's brain is amazing. He has a great partner in Faith, making them a great team of investigators.

Busted also gives you the idea where the next book is going. Lena will return in the next book: Unseen.

Cliffhanger: No

You all know I can’t go long without Will Trent. Busted by Karin Slaughter is technically book 6.5 of the Will Trent Series. It is a novella, so this will be a short review. Well, what is my sweet Will Trent up to now? He is currently undercover, well on his way to assignment to infiltrate a corrupt town. He stops at a store to get an ICEE. Does Will get his ICEE? No, he does not. That is because the store gets shot-up and Will follows the criminal in pursuit.

Now, Will has had a hard life and Karin Slaughter could let the man get his ICEE?? –that is just cold. However, this book is 68 pages of nonstop action. Will even gets a little fast and furious action.

Could Karin Slaughter make this a typical convenience store robbery? Of course not. This is full of misdirection! As always, it is just phenomenal and I am utterly addicted. I am now picking up book 7, Unseen. I need to go now. This novella gets 5 out of 5 stars!

Busted is a short story featuring Will Trent, by popular American author, Karin Slaughter. While waiting to buy a frozen coke on his way to an undercover job in Macon, Will somehow gets involved in a situation that attracts town, county and state police as well as bringing down upon him the wrath of his boss Amanda. Slaughter manages to pack quite a bit into this one: a gas station hold-up, some motorcycle stunt riding, missing cash, a possible hostage situation and a very nasty old woman. The readers certainly get their money’s worth, including a laugh-out-loud ending and a preview of the next Will Trent, Unseen.

Sucked into Will's world all over again. The mystery was addictive as usual, even with it just being a novella.

I wish they would go back to Natalie Ross' narration. Not thrilled with Kathleen Early's performance in the books so far. She doesn't even give Will a Southern accent. Just a pretty bland reading, IMO.

A short story, 6.5 in the Will Trent thriller series (and a prequel to Slaughter's Unseen ), revolving around Special Agent Will Trent in Forest Park, Georgia.

My Take
Crack. Me. Up. I know just how Will feels. Why can't we just beam ourselves to the grocery store...oops, I mean, Will is so annoyed that he can't get that real-time update on his app for a frozen Coke... Whatever is the world coming to, lol.

Jeez, when you put it that way, Clayton County does sound like a place you should bypass. Although most of the characters in "Busted" fit right in. Lyin', cheatin', stealin'...
"This is America. We have a constitutional right to make unhealthy choices."
There are more twists and turns that corkscrew all over the place while we read from third person point-of-view from Will's perspective. It did leave a few issues unresolved, but the primary conflict was convoluted enough that I simply didn't care. 'Cause, I gotta tell ya, it took a couple times through that ending before I really got what Slaughter was layin' down. Then another time so I could LMAO. Talk about justice!!

The Story
If it weren't for that Coke ICEE, Will would've been down the road instead of compromising his cover.

Will simply can't ignore an armed robbery, especially when innocents are involved.

The Characters
Special Agent Will Trent is undercover as big bad biker Bill Black who rides an Indian Chief Dark Horse. Unfortunately, he still needs his Coke ICEE.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is...
...the state equivalent of the FBI. The local office is the Panthersville Road HQ. Amanda Wagner is the deputy director with a chip on her shoulder and is based in Atlanta. Special Agent Faith Mitchell is Will's partner. Special Agent Nick Shelton works in the field.

Officer Pete McClendon walked into the Lil' Dixie Gas-n-Go, sweet on Billie. He also teaches CPR at Spivey Senior High. Officer Mixon doesn't need to shave more'n twice a week.

Lil' Dixie Gas-n-Go
Samantha "Maw-Maw" Lewis is the owner's racist "mother-in-law" who claims she works there three days a week when not volunteering at the church. Billie Eugenia Lam is the clerk on duty. Gilbert Caldwell is the owner who likes his fishing trips.

Wayne Michael Walker drove the truck and is a high school counselor with a master's in social work who was recently fired. Wayne has a twenty-year-old daughter, Terri, in Afghanistan. Doug-Ray Pierce taught math at Spivey Senior High and coached girls' softball — and was teacher of the year. Arthur Pierce, a mailman, was his daddy.

Gloria Pringle works the night shift at O'Kelley's, a parts supplier. She has a nineteen-year-old daughter and a twenty-year-old son, Connor, who broke up with Terri. The son's girlfriend, Sheila, is also nineteen.

The Cover and Title
The background of the cover is abstract with those round green drops plopping into that rippling circle of greens, blues, purples, and black. At the top is an info blurb in white. The author's name is in a muted orange while the title spans the ripples in white in the lower half. A huge thorn spears out from the bottom right in an orange to yellow gradient. In the lower left is pale lime telling us this is a novella.

The title overtly refers to the weekly newspaper, "Busted", local mugshots taken by the cops, and covertly clues us in to the ending.

I like Karin Slaughter's Will Trent series. Slaughter's novels aren't great literature, but her writing is good, her characters are interesting and she tells a good story. Crime fiction has long been my choice for fluffy, escapist reading and Slaughter is one of the few contemporary American crime fiction writers whose works I enjoy. There's every chance I'll tire of the series at some point - as I have of other crime fiction series - but at the moment I'm a fan. That said, I'm not a fan of this particular work, which is more an advertisement for the next book in the series than anything else. I presume that in the e-book publishing world, a teaser short story or novella with an extract from the next novel in a series is a successful marketing strategy. However, it's a marketing strategy I can live without. Apart from the extraordinary implausibility of the plot, there's nothing inherently wrong with the novella, but I'm cross with myself for having paid to download what is essentially an advertisement. It won't stop me from reading the next novel in the series, but I'm going to resist falling for this strategy again.

Detective Will Trent is standing in a Georgia convenience store, waiting on an obstinate Icee frozen drink machine. To the surveillance cameras and bored staff of the Lil’ Dixie Gas-n-Go, however, Will appears to be someone very different—the menacing ex-con Bill Black. Going undercover as Bill, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation agent is about to infiltrate the most corrupt town in the most corrupt county in the new American South. But first: his Icee.

Everything changes in one horrific instant, as all hell breaks loose at the Lil’ Dixie. A cop is shot. A bag of cash goes flying across the floor. A young woman disappears while a killer takes off in a battered pick-up truck. Within seconds, Will is in pursuit.

The first part of the book I followed, but it became a little confusing, slow, and heavy going and I lost track of the plot.

My first Karin Slaughter book that I have not been that pleased with, just too talky.

three stars.

What a clever short story! I had to really pay attention to the names of the characters because there were quite a few in the same place. A robbery is taking place and Will Trent is trapped inside there witnessing everything. He now needs to find out why some oddball screwy things were happening, before, during and after the robbery. I laughed my butt off at the end!

Busted is a prequel novella to Unseen, the 7th book in the Will Trent series. It follows Will as he goes undercover as an ex-con trying to infiltrate a corrupt county. Busted soon devolves into a high speed chase as Will pursues robbers.

Anytime spent with Will is time well spend. However, I’m more a fan of Slaughter’s dialogue work rather than her action sequences. Busted is a little on light on the dialogue scenes, however those last new pages were [chef’s kiss].

Onwards to Unseen!

Working undercover for the last few weeks, GBI Detective Will Trent doesn’t expect to get in the middle of a sticky situation when he stops at a convenience store for a frozen coke. The slurpee machine has just eaten his money when an armed robber comes into the store and demands the cash. Gunshots are traded, leaving a cop dead and Will chasing the culprits on his motorcycle.

This is a very short but entertaining story by Karin Slaughter. Will meets some interesting people while he figures out who stole the money from the store. My rating: 4 Stars.

I'm a huge fan of Karen slaughter and the Will Trent series. With that being said this book was probably my least favorite and most shockingly disappointing of all of her books. It's seemed somewhat scattered and was tied up very neatly and a bit too quickly. It was rushed and I felt that it wasn't even Slaughter's writing style. Definitely not a good example of her literary genius or mystery genius. Also not a great example of her writing skills.

I know I've read this one before, but for the life of me I couldn't remember who the mastermind behind the plan was.

A quick on edge thriller, just as I'd have it from Slaughter.

While Detective Will Trent was hovering beside the "Icee" machine, waiting impatiently for the decrepit old machine to spit out his favourite drink, his reverie was interrupted by the arrival of a local cop. The gas station where he had stopped was run-down, as was a lot of the surrounding county. But Will was undercover as ex-con, Bill Black – when the cop asked was that “his” machine outside, Will grunted; it didn’t do to talk to a cop when you were a criminal.

But suddenly all hell broke loose – a brazen day-light robbery, a shooting, and an old pick-up truck with a wounded man fleeing the scene – Will took off after the truck on his bike after dialling 911. The results of the next few hours were chaotic; with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation on the scene, the bodies were mounting. So much for being undercover! What would happen? And who were the latest criminals to enter Will’s life?

Another brilliant novella by Karin Slaughter. The usual gripping tension, with a plot tidied up nicely in a short space of time. I found this to be a really entertaining read and in no way lacking because of it being a novella. Highly recommended.

For me, short stories can sometimes be a case of hit or miss. They’re either really interesting and leave you wishing for more or you question why you wasted time reading them. With Busted we get the former: we are given a short story that is truly interesting.

Whilst it is not necessary to read this as a prequel to Unseen, it is a nice little read. I read it after Unseen and still enjoyed it. I wouldn’t recommend reading it prior to where it sits in the series, though, simply because it is linked in to the undercover role Will Trent takes at that point in the storyline.

It is a fun read, managing to give us all that we want from a Will Trent story in very few pages. Sometimes with short stories I find myself wishing that they had been a full length novel, but Karin Slaughter knows what to do to ensure everything is at a length where it needs to be.

As a whole, it is a fun little addition to the Will Trent series.

Another little short story Buy Karin Slaughter that is a nice short fast paced will Trent story for the interlude between the full length novels in this always evolving series. Reccomend this book to fans, and to everyone else; I suggest you check out Triptych first, the 1st book in the will trent series. Then if you enjoy that one, read the next one, Fractured. By the time you finish the 3rd book: Undone, you will surely be hooked, and you will find yourself loving (and hating)the characters like they are people you know. After that you will have a hard time closing the book because you don't want to wait another minute to find out what happens next! (Disclaimer: I cannot promise that anyone will have the same enthusiastic reactions, responses, or experiences as depicted in this review. )
