Alice in Borderland #16 was pretty intense. The battle between two fierce characters was just like it should be, sneaky and puzzling. The psychological warfare was also to the point and in its finest. This volume pretty much brings back the good old first volumes of this manga.

Whoa the first 2 chapters were deep. I think I'm finally starting to understand what the author wants to tell with these various characters and what "life" is to them.
The King of Spades and King of Diamonds were some awesome side-stories. I won't even call them side stories. They fight right in the plot.
Also, is Chishiya really a ♦ specialist?? He's more like a combo of ♥ and♦. I can't stop admiring him. His conversation with the ♦K was extremely interesting.

Last chapter:
I screamed. Why does Niragi have to always f*ck things up?!!

THAT BEAUTY CONTEST 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥

"It's probably Aqua Regia, king, after all. It's an acid strong enough to dissolve noble metals like gold"

"Logically speaking, as the number of steps increases, the average approaches 0, meaning we're all eventually going to choose 0. That's the Nash equilibrium. (A stable state of a system involving the interaction of different participants, in which no participant can gain by a unilateral change of strategy if the strategies of the others remain unchanged.)" (Thrills aside, I'm actually learning so much from this series 🤭)

"You! What are you trying at?! The probability of winning by choosing 100 is 0%!"

"Nash equilibrium, cognitive limit, recursive collection, aren't you all thinking too much? Things like that just make your head hurt. I just felt like destroying that altogether." CHISHIYAAAAAA💖💖💖💖

"100 AGAIN!? WHYYYYYY!!"

"Nash equilibrium can be destroyed with self-sacrifice. And without people who are willing to do so, there would be no saving any of us. Sacrifice in the face of extreme conditions, is there such a thing as altruism? Is life sacred? Is it beautiful? That's what you are trying to weigh, right? The value of a life"

"The majority of people living in our society will contribute hundreds of millions for the possibility of parents saving their children from an incurable disease. Yet on the other hand, just 100 yen could change a child's life in the developing world, but they don't bat an eye... What's the difference? A life that should be saved and one that should not... Is it just the media that determines this?
"That's a good question... I'd probably ignore them both.... But take that 100 million yen, and create one million vaccines for 100 yen each, which million people would you save? If one million people were waiting for that vaccine, which group would you save?"

"The steel baron Carnegie, during the US civil war, lawfully paid 300 dollars for a soldier to fight in his stead. He bought the life of another and sent him off to war"

"It is not our duty to contemplate the inequalities or the irrationalities of this world. Only the elite among the elite - a handful blessed with the special capacity should think about those things. For people like us without the power to change the framework of the world, it'll just be a waste of time no matter how much we agonise over it."

"Is one tuna worth more than the countless sardines it consumes?"

"One time, when I was a student, I went on a trip alone. An escape from a breakup. I was weak. I'm much too easily hurt by others. On top of that, I'm clumsy. I lost my wallet, my cellphone, and even my purse! I didn't know if it was sad or pathetic. I wanted to die. I was in a spiral of self-hatred. But a local old lady took notice of me, and called out to me, she brought me to her house, treated me to a hot meal, she even gave me money to get home the next morning. I apologised profusely... "I have a daughter about the same age as you in Tokyo. Hang in there. You'll find a new love" she replied. On the train back to Tokyo, I couldn't hold back the tears as they streamed down my face. To this day, I'll never forget what I wrote in my journal that day. "I will live so that I may pass on this small baton of kindness.""

"Perhaps salvation only exists in death..."
"So the purpose of life is death? I feel the opposite way. Since coming to the borderlands, I've encountered much death. Death is to be feared, yet not looked away from. But it is also not the final goal. Death is there to make the living boil, make them shine, make them swell, make them fired up. No life, no die!"

[Alice in Borderland - Vol. 8 → ☆☆☆☆☆]

I understand the point of the flashback with Kuzuryu and showing the corruption of the world, especially elite people who look down on others. I also understand the flashbacks with other characters and their moments of self- sacrifice and helping others and what they considered to be the "value" of their lives in helping others. It's interesting. It's actionable. It keeps us as readers accountable.

Now... let me just say... once that game is over... and we get the backstory for the face cards...holy crap. Just. WHAT?! WHAT?! There's a part of me that wants to go back and reread each game to see what the purpose of it was. Like, did Kyuma plan his Clubs games so that if a team worked together or acted humanely, most of them would survive? Are Hearts games all pitting people against each other in a way where there's only one survivor because the Queen is a psychopath? Are Spades games so difficult because the King wants to kill as many people as possible so they can be freed from Borderland? They were all ordinary players, who just happened to do radio workouts every morning together. But how long has this cycle been happening??

I wish we could learn more of the backstory! Who is the Joker? Did they all choose to stay behind for... what? Can someone be a citizen but not be one of the face cards? If people do stay behind... Who would be the replacements? Which of our main characters would stay behind? And would they be able to change the system so it's not so much killing, or will they continue to perpetuate the cycle until they are eventually killed by new citizens
...

Is this all just a metaphor for playing cards? Every deck and every shuffle is creating one of infinite combinations....idk man. Idk.

And what were those fireworks that day if not fireworks??? I NEED TO KNOW.

Also, loved that little montage with Arisu at the end. Sets the tone perfectly for the final showdown!!

“Nash equilibrium can be destroyed with self-sacrifice, and without the people who are willing to do so, there would be no saving for any of us. Sacrifice in the face of extreme conditions - is there such a thing as altruism? Is life sacred? Is it beautiful? That’s what you’re trying to weigh, right? The value of a life...”

“If I lose my emotions, will it be easier on me? Or will it only increase the pain?”

“The majority of people living in our society will contribute hundreds of millions for the possibility of parents saving their children from an incurable disease, yet on the other hand, just 100 yen could change a child’s life in developing countries, but they don’t bat an eye. What’s the difference? A life that should be saved, and one that should not… is it just the media that determines this?”

“It’s not that you don’t know the worth of a life - it’s that you can’t decide on your own what it is.” […] “Right here is a life trying to push forward. Does this life has value? Or does it not? You yourself get to decide.”

“Human hearts are beautiful. Human lives are precious. That’s what I believe. It’s because I hold these ideals that I can survive in this horrible world.”

“Since coming to the Borderlands, I’ve encountered much death. Death is to be feared, yet not looked away from. But it is also not the final goal. Death is there to make the living boil, make them shine, make them swell, make them fired up - no live, no die!”

“I’m addicted to the thrill… wanting to live, wanting to die, wanting to be saved, wanting to run away - all of that is laid bare here. I don’t know of any other place where you can let your soul dance free.”

“At the end of all the struggling and flailing, have I not changed at all? Is it true that people can’t change? They can only curse the environment they grew up in? No… there are so many other things here…”

“You need to wake up and realize there are no enemies. They’re just created by you. Your enemy is your negative self.”

“First, take care of yourself. Having others take care of you can come after.”

“I’lol continue living, despised by others! I will continue to incur hate, and hold my head up high as I go to hell!”

best resolution of any chapters of the manga so far. reading this is eye-opening, thanks kuzuryuu and chisiya (and obviously the author) for this. but mostly, arisu’s first inner monologue, his inner conflict and the final conclusion. arisu’s pain and melancholy was so relatable it made me cry. thank you haro aso, i won’t forget there’s an exit whenever darkness surrounds me. just ‘you have a thorn in your heart and you desperately try to hold onto it, hurting others and yourself in the process. that’s why you should ease that thorn out more lightly. And ease it and ease it warmly, calmly… and slowly. that’s the way.’ or ‘a heart is like a muscle: after resting from an injury, it becomes stronger. All hearts are capable of this.’ and ‘there’s always an exit!’ kills me. words that have sinked in and made their way into my heart. thanks again <3

This volume wraps up the exciting battle between Chishiya and the King of Diamonds. This is one of the best games yet, and I love seeing those two masterminds square off against one another. This volume also gives us a lot more backstory into the four main face-card characters. We learn more about the King of Clubs, the King of Diamonds, the King of Spades, and the Queen of Hearts. I really enjoyed getting a deeper insight into the citizens of Borderland. Oh, and I got excited by this, but the King of Diamonds name-drops the joker card in this volume. I keep wondering if the Joker card will in any way come into play before the series concludes. Overall a great volume. 5/5

"Do you know the difference between children and adults? It's how much is received versus how much is given. Humans as children, simply receive without any conditions and then they take all that they've received and in turn give it out when they become adults. Again without any conditions. Those who never received, can't give in return... No matter how mature they appear, they still remain a child, wanting only to receive."

Chishiya berhasil mengalahkan King of Diamonds, Keiichi Kuzuryu, dalam permainan angka.

What a volume!

Really liked to see some content from before Arisu's day 1. I enjoyed seeing the face cards/citizens interactions with h each other and how they all knew each other/were friends. This was not included in the live action. Which was sad, feel like it added a lot to there amazing characters.
