Could be his job as a janitor at an insane asylum, could be the meaninglessness of existence, could be the unwanted cilantro on his tacos. Whatever the reason, Jim has elected to commit suicide. But before he can do the deed, a mysterious resident at work equips him with a dog and a bag of ash, and throws him into a secret game known as Cryptofauna. Cryptofauna is played b ...more

If Alice and Wonderland and The Hitchiker’s Guide to The Galaxy had a love child, it’d be Cryptofauna. This fantasy novel creates an acid dream of lovable characters, tense twists, and a storyworld unlike any I’ve experienced. Our protagonist gets dragged through dangerous adventures, each testing his stamina until the final test is revealed.

But what is Cryptofauna? A game, of sorts. It’s a well crafted metaphor for life, but I did think it took a little too long for the characters to reveal th

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Every so often, you come across a book that leaves you wondering if you should be looking into psychedelic drugs, because you realize that your reality is rather limited.

This is definitely one of those books. I spent half of this confused and disoriented (in a good way!) and the other half just amazed at how out there it was and how the author pulled it together. I kept thinking through this book that there was no wa

Now even though the book ends perfectly and there is no indication that there should be a second book, or even a second book in the works, I'm going to need a second book. I want to read more of Cryptofauna and this amazing team that I've gotten to know over the course of reading.

Jim is a janitor who's had enough with life and is ready to end it all. Somehow one of the patients, Oz, knows this and enters just when Jim needs him the most. He offers Jim something more in the way of Cryptofauna, a

I wasn’t sure what I was getting into with Patrick Canning’s Cryptofauna. When I was queried for a review, I almost passed and I’m glad I did not.
Down on his luck Jim is something of an Arthur Dent kind of character from Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy… amid his life falling apart all around him, he is whisked away on an incredible (and mostly unbelievable) adventure. The humor is similar as well and Canning is able to write some incredibly potent hooks into the story (the first line, for one)

Can we get something out of the way up front? This book is…unique. When you are presented with a story and you are thoroughly warned that it is a strange book and you may or may not enjoy the level of absurdity that it has attained to, you know it’s going to be fantastic. Without much to go on, I decided to give Cryptofauna by Patrick Canning a try. When I say I didn’t have much to go on, I mean that there isn’t much you can compare it to. It dwells somewhere in the realm of Alice in Wonderland ...more

I received this book for free through Voracious Readers Only.

Jim, a janitor, is teleported to a small lifeboat adrift in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, in the company of a very intelligent dog and a Belgian painter who loathes the colour blue. And that's just the first indication his life is about to run just a little bit off the rails.
He has been selected to play Cryptofauna, a game no one seems to want to explain to him in detail, and starts training and assembling his team with disappointin

A young man is inducted into a hidden world of magic and super-beings enagaged in a mysterious competition.

Whether you enjoy this book or not will largely depend on your sense of humour. Obviously, I did. Apart from the general daftness, there’s a familiar urban fantasy premise and conventional plot structure, which holds the story together well.

The plot begins with the protagonist, Jim, about to kill himself, but he’s instead offered an opportunity to join a secret world of magic and power. The

Adventures in game playing ...

Canning brings an interesting story in Cryptofauna to the readers. This is the second book of Canning's that I've read, and though I liked the first one, I liked this one better. The story brings the life the characters, not just the main character, Jim, but those he interacts with. The story brings the reader into the life of Jim, and how he feels his life is void. The story takes over and brings Jim (and the reader) into playing the secret game of Cryptofauna, hen

The cover illustration is as intriguing as the world of Cryptofauna. If you enjoy fantasy novels, this one will have you traveling with Jim, a young janitor, from the middle of the ocean to a secret underground cavern run by knowledge-loving monks as he searches for his meaning in life. Along the way he is helped by an eclectic group of friends, including Mars - his canine companion. The author writes with a great sense of humor throughout the book!

A little different to what I would normally read but the plot sounded intriguing and mysterious. We follow Jim who is bored with his job so thinks about doing something rather drastic but before he does he meets someone and they throw him into a world of gaming. It is a really interesting read with a original plot line. I would love to read more by this author.
