Even the oceans are no longer safe from the scourge of the biological weapon known as the Oni Agent. Governments struggle to stand under the weight of civilization's collapse. Some remnants of human society have risen from the ashes. But the radical military organization responsible for the Agent has developed a new weapon more terrifying than their last. Rumors spread that a ghost fleet of ships have been commandeered to deliver the killing blow that will destroy any hope of humanity’s resurrection.
Captain Dominic Holland and his group of covert operatives are charged with uncovering the whereabouts of the fleet and stopping them before they reach land. On a mission that takes them around the crumbling strongholds of Europe, they uncover a plot more sinister than they could have possibly imagined. With few resources and little time, Dom and his Hunters put their lives on the line to save the world from utter destruction. But even that may not be enough.
Anthony J Melchiorri is a scientist with a PhD in bioengineering. Originally from the Midwest, he now lives in Texas. By day, he develops cellular therapies and 3D-printable artificial organs. By night, he writes apocalyptic, medical, and science-fiction thrillers that blend real-world research with other-worldly possibility. When he isn't in the lab or at the keyboard, he spends his time running, reading, hiking, and traveling in search of new story ideas.
Anthony J. Melchiorri ups the excitement yet again with 'Ghost Fleet'. This seventh book in The Tide series takes us along with Captain Dom and his dwindling group of operatives (Hunters) as they work to stop the crazed military syndicate - creators of the Oni Agent - who have now cultivated and even more advanced and fearsome armament than the previous one. A"ghost fleet of ships" has reputedly been requisitioned to transport this new weapon of mass destruction to land for the purpose of unleashing it and obliterating any chance for the revitalization of mankind. Who would have thought anything more fear-inducing could be put into existence? The Hunters resilience and fearlessness in chasing down the ghost fleet - while also constantly battling with the (many gargantuan) Skulls - not to mention, their overall unrelenting selflessness in fighting for humanity's continued existence, combine to take the intensity, action and character development to new heights. Mr. Melchiorri never ceases to keep it fresh and enthralling. Narrator Ryan Kennard Burke is flawless in keeping pace with the nonstop action and bringing the character emotions to life in such a way it is almost impossible for the listener to not feel deeply for their profound joys, grief, anger, and tightly bonded camaraderie.
After finishing the entire series of The Tide books, I can honestly say these books have been one of the best reads I've had in a long time. Every book was well written and filled with pulse-pounding excitement throughout. I read the entire 7 book series in exactly one calendar month, a telling tribute to the page turning excitement within each book.
If I may be permitted one tiny nit-pic though. In this final book, Dom and his company of hunters board cargo ships filled with skulls, risking life and limb to plant explosives below deck to disable and sink the ship. But, as the book explains, Dom's ship, the Huntress, is fully equipped with rockets and torpedoes. Surely they could have just blasted the ships from a safe distance without fear of injury to any of their own. Surely, there was also the desire to access the computers aboard the ship and download any helpful information to their cause. But attacking the bridge of the ship and removing any resistance there would only be a minor operation and hardly putting most of the Hunters in danger.
A small thing, but it stuck in the back of my mind. And, in no way, alters my opinion of these books or hinders me from recommending them highly.
DOM HAS SOME MAJOR DECISIONS, BUT WILL IT COST HIM MORE PEOPLE HE CALLS FAMILY??
ANTHONY Melchiorri has done it again, with Book #7, Ghost Fleet, out and available. Another awesome job with a series that just gets better as it goes along. Dom and his crew just can't catch a break, with the ONI Virus and the United States. With certain individuals in his now top Chain of Command still not trusting the Hunters, it again seems like Dom and family (the Crew of course) are on their own an usual. With one set of friends always at they're call, even though they may be hundreds miles away, it's the one group of people he can count on. This time Dom has some major decisions to make, but it looks like it will cost him still more people he calls family, as he's not sure how much more he can do this. This is one great Series Anthony has done and I am so ready for Book #8.
So I am by no means anything close to an expert- take with a grain of salt. I hav been throughly enjoying this series, which is usually not a genre I read much of. Spoiler alert—- I just don’t get the fight scene when the Hunters are on the battle ship near Dublin, once they plugged in the stuff why couldn’t they jump overboard and avoid the Skulls and Goliath, maybe I read the scenario wrong, but I just keep thinking they could have jumped off the ship got to the zodiac and let the boat be destroyed? I know the water is cold there, but I do wish there was a note on why they couldn’t have done this.
Actual rating 3 1/2 stars. Maybe it's me - I have after all been on a non-stop "Tide" reading marathon for the last 2 weeks or so - or maybe it's just that after 7 books I was bound to hit one that didn't sit right with me. But "Ghost Fleet" was not my favorite of the series by any stretch of the imagination.
No worries: Melchiorri's writing is still fantastic (as is the editing), the action is still out-the-gdamn-roof and the tension never ends. Having said that, this 7th chapter had a lot at fault with it FOR ME. And I'm not just talking about wanting more of O'Neil's involvement beyond doing his Professor X imitation. But when you're looking oh so very close for that next big thrilling reveal, you may find something else along the way.
OK, so what the hell am I talking about? First and foremost, I just felt that the 'Go Team USA!' rah rah was way, WAY over the top here. Yes, all of this genre's best writers do it - NSS is no different - but this made me itch. Sure, I can believe Russians or Iranians or Syrians as individuals were involved in all this, but we're going too far with the who is good, who is bad shtick. Seriously, look at a map of Iran and include a chart of the USA & Allies bases around their country. I don't blame them for being a little paranoid. But the constant 'your evil empire will finally fall!' stuff was just too... well, to be blunt, racist. Even the old Japanese guy's rant about revenge made more sense, especially if you've ever talked to an actual Iranian who will tell you point blank its not the people that hate the West at all!
Equally so, to suggest that a French - underline this part now please - nuclear facility!! could be breached EVEN with all that's going on during this apocalypse is absurd. Hey, speed up the Super Car, then crash boom bang we're in and have stolen all the nuclear bombs! Non mes amis. C'est tout simplement stupide. Enough with the 'White Flag' crappola from the ignorant masses: the French military is one of the 5 or 6 best equipped and trained in the world. It may be more subtle than others, but it is very much there and very active in places like Africa and Asia. The US would be no where near where we are in our über-patriotically promoted 'War Against Terror' without them. To suggest otherwise is ignorant folly... and yes, I know exactly what I'm talking about, after living NEAR or IN FRANCE the last 30 years.
Equally so, the lack of subtlety about the German stereotypes - "vee vant to makink ze bioveppons!" - was a huge let-down. These stories should be above that. I'm just surprised we didn't have our allies in Dublin all standing around drunk when those scenes flashed by. I love these types of stories and I don't mind our heroes being modelled as they are... but why do this with other peoples? I just didn't get it. And I just didn't like it. No, I don't think it was done in any way with any kind of malice but still...
Add to that and there were some things I wondered about - like why did Lauren need a biopsy from O'Neil when there were more than a few Hybrids lying around dead? - but won't lose too much sleep over them. I realize the story had to / needed to change gears slightly and overall it wasn't that big of a deal - I did round up you'll notice - but I am definitely hoping Book 8 does a little more to return this series to the rockin' and rollin' epic its been so far! Can't wait to see what happens next!
Overall it is a very good series of books. The author is an intelligent writer. The characters are good but a few leave a little to be desired. Dom's youngest daughter comes off as either younger than the high schooler she is supposed to be or her character is just not too bright. The hunters are an effective team in the field but for special operators they make a multitude of tactical mistakes that continually give away their position. While this makes for exciting reading it makes the hunters appear less than the tier 2 operators they are supposed to be. That being said I am anxiously awaiting the next book.
The Tide series grips you from the first page. Must read!
This entire series is among some of the best I’ve ever read. Between the characters, the science, the plot, and the action that is so well written you feel as though you are right there in the midst of it, I have had a hard time putting each book down. The loss of sleep has been well worth it, though. I’m anxiously awaiting the release of book 8.
Post script: And just like that, my day is made because I found that book 8 has already been released.
Ghost Fleet, book 7 of Anthony J. Melchiorri's tide series may be the best of the series. This one is a roller coaster of nonstop action with several twists and last second saves. The last few books have included a significant presence of the FTL and is no longer primarily about killing skulls, droolers, goliaths and titans.
I have to mention that I am in agreement with two other reviewers. The first said referred to the Hunters incursion onto the ship off the coast of Dublin. This reviewer ask why didn't they just jump into the water since skulls can't swim. I kept thinking that through the whole battle. The second reviewer stated that the actual plot or movement of this series moves at a snails pace (my words). I agree, I could have skipped this book and would not have missed much in the overall picture. The nukes added an exciting element, but were introduced and concluded in this installment. Now we're in the same place we sere after book 6. Still, I'll keep reading.
The 7th book in this series kept me reading from start to finish. The characters were written flawlessly and the action the Hunters faced was nonstop. Dom has to struggle with saving those he loves or saving the world. I love how the author writes about Dom's struggles, it makes him realistic and human. I love the addition of O'neil to the hunters. I love this series and highly recommend it. Lookiing forward to future adventures.
The book draws you into a terrible worldwide conflict with the enemies of humanity growing stronger and more cunning as the biological weapons created by madness takes billions of lives to turn them into an army of horrific monsters who live to feed on fresh meat and entrails of the living. The team ethics and writing skills shown by the author make me stay awake long into the night as I cannot put the book down
I'm coming back to this series after a break. This one has all the action and horror from the previous books, and I'm regretting now not continuing this series further. No literary masterpiece here, just a fun end of the world story about survivors fighting a zombie (in this case, they call them skulls) apocalypse. I'm back and fully invested in this series, and look forward to reading the next book.
Another action-packed addition to Anthony J. Melchiorri's "Tide" series! I loved the book, but it didn't seem to carry the same momentum as his previous books and took me a bit longer to get through. Still, looking forward to the next one and hoping that the author will consider bringing in some fresh faces to join the Hunters!
This is probably the best book series I've ever read. Fast paced with excellent plots and highly likable well fleshed out characters, and nasty villains, I highly recommend The Tide series. Kept me up nights reading. Couldn't put them down! Looking forward to Number 8 when it comes out. I think I have a new favorite author!
I don't know how Anthony does it. EVERY book is better than the last. His imagination is insane! His knowledge of science is ever evident. And the action is, as always, non stop.
If you haven't read book #1, the Tide, please do so. You may find your next favorite author.
Again the author returns to the root of this story. When you split your resources too thin, things doesn't work. This time the Hunters are against nuclear weapons and the enemy is playing with Dom's credibility within the USA ranks.
Dom and the Hunters will face one of the most difficult battles. Will they prevail?
If you've been a constant reader of this series, you'll be in for more intrigue, murder, death, investigative medical procedures, surprises, and a downright pleasant reading experience. The regulars are still alive and breathing (for now), with the FGL still managing to stay just a couple of steps in front of our heroes. Very good series to read.
And again, you have outdid yourself. Most series get boring or repetitive, but this one just gets even better with each new one. A must read, even if you are dead tired the next day because you won't be able to put it down easily.
If you think the Skulls couldn't get any worse you'd be wrong. If you thought the FTL had no more nasty tricks you'd be wrong! This series is never repetitive, never boring. It gets more intense as each book progresses. Dom and the Hunters are believable and easy to relate to, making me cringe every time they throw themselves into danger. Heart stopping horror.
I love the Tide series. Each one just gets better and I hope there will be many more in the series Full of action, intrigue, romance and humor, it has everything a 5 star book should have.
Excellent addition to the series, as always. Dom and the Hunters go up against their most dangerous adversaries yet. I really enjoyed seeing how their newest Hunter adapts and contributes his unique skill set to the rest of the team.
The story is getting monotonous here. Same sequence of events in different settings. The actual progress in the story is very small. At this moment i am not sure if I will go for the next book in the series and if I do then it would be to finish what I started and to see how it ends.
Really a great series full of solid characters, an engaging plot and continuous action - and once you reach the end of the book you’re poised to jump right into the next. Can’t wait for book #8!
Ghost Fleet was a nice addition to the series. Lots of action lots of drama, and a little bit of surprise. I am looking forward to the next installment.
