Blood & Magic #4

Branded by Fire

Rate this book
Aria Naveed can’t decide what’s worse — being mate-bonded to Declan Valkenaar, the Alpha of the Pacific Northwest Pack, or owning up to the fact that she’s developing feelings for him.

Her bond to Declan is the one thing keeping her grounded and preventing her new power from destroying everything and everyone around her.

If Aria doesn’t tread carefully, especially where her heart is concerned, she’ll learn the hard way that if you play with fire, you'll always get burned.

First I must say that if you haven’t read the first three books this book will go right over your head. The politics, anger, relationships build from book 1 to this one.

With that out of the way I love how Declan’s and Aria’s relationship comes together. I also love how Ms. Annett leaves this open with other couplings we could see in more books down the road. We also see new alliances form, trust earned, romance begin, bonds strengthened and danger around every corner.

Here Declan has given Aria time and as much space as his tiger and him can allow without going to where they are rogue. Aria isn’t quite understanding the issue that Declan has been having and it is hard to see him being tugged in so many directions. Hard but entertaining. Aria is one scared and stubborn woman.

The book starts off with action and danger and continues this way to the end. It is the culmination of the dance between Declan and Aria where they figure out things about one another and discover their feelings and explore them. Only things get in the way. A visiting alpha who really messes with Aria in a big way that will have your jaw go to the ground. This in turn causes us to see a Declan that is scary but also we see why he is the head of the pack. He is strong, decisive, very good at the chess of politics and how to stay on top but also great at understanding what is needed that is good for his pack and not just himself. His position is seen as tenuous due to Aria but he is being awesome with his don’t care attitude and giving her time to adjust and figure out his feelings and hers. While this is going on we still have the HAC plotting away, James trying to help Aria adjust and move on from his feelings, Inarus helping Aria and the pack and Aria and Declan trying to find their way to being together. Let me rephrase that Aria trying to find her way through her fear and trust issues to believe in the bond and Declan’s feelings. It is fun to see how frustrated she gets especially when he is the only one who can calm her down.

Aria is trying to find her place. She is running a business that is keeping her busy, figuring out her feelings and her powers. As she begins to come to trust Declan we see that get frayed and her anger and hurt takes over. She doesn’t trust his feelings or the bond and it is killing Declan in so many ways. He is patient though and it does pay off in the end. Her stubbornness though almost destroys it all and she learns in the end what matters.

The story is fast paced, filled with danger and entrances you from the beginning. You are never taken away from the cliff as one situation ends another begins and is more dangerous than the last. The romance and how Declan deals with Aria is entertaining and sweet. Sometimes it is sexy as sin. That man truly knows her and is smitten...The characters draw you in James with his warmth and kindness, Aria with her stubbornness and fears, Inarus with his growth, Declan for just being Declan and also how patient and understanding he is he even owns up to when he is an idiot and the enemies that you love to dislike. Declan and Aria get a happy ending but we are also left with the door open for more to happen in the series and hoping to see James, Inarus and the others find love. A really great ending to the bonding and discovery of trust and love for Aria and Declan.

Branded by Fire is the best one yet (and the other 3 books in the series rock!).

As Aria's powers to continue to manifest stronger and stronger, the prophecy of her destroying the city becomes more evident. The only person who can truly calm her and keep her from hurting herself and other is Declan, her bonded mate. As the story progresses we see a different Aria and Declan than we've seen in other installments and I must say - I love them! Sure, Aria is struggling against the bond; she didn't agree to it after all, but there is a definite shift (no pun intended) between Aria and Declan.

While Aria is trying to figure out her feelings for Declan, her evil mother is using psychological methods to try and manipulate her. Aria's mother is playing games and planning for something huge that involves all of the shifters surrounding Aria. As a group, it's up to everyone to figure out what that plan involves and how to stop it before it starts.

The books in the Blook & Magic series are fast paced and easy to follow. Aria isn't the perfect heroine - in fact, she's extremely flawed. True to the series, Aria is reckless and impetuous, acting before she thinks about the potential consequences, and is historically unable to ask for help because she has the "I can do anything" attitude. Strong and independent is great but putting yourself in harms way to prove a point is just reckless. Her actions in Branded by Fire could have cost her everything because she jumps in guns a blazin' without regard to the situation or circumstance. Fortunately, she has a small group of devoted men who are there to back her up.

I really enjoy the world created by Danielle Annett in the Blood and Magic. I like the continued development of the world the series is based in and the characters that run across the pages. Her attitude toward Declan changes as she begins to realize that he's not there to control her but support her in a way that she's not used to being supported. There are action sequences that deliver and keep the reader engaged. The book is full of action, fast paced, and twists and turns abound!

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

Still on the binge. Aria and Declan have this push and pull. Will Aria finally make up her mind?

Continuity issues: the age of a girl changed from 11 to 13 in a very short time. There are some other niggling things, but overall liking the story.

Loved the series

I am giving it 5 stars because I was hooked from the first page in first book to the last page on this book. The characters were easy to fall in love with as well. The only issue I had was the repetition of the past events on every book.

I just love this series Blood & Magic and I when I saw that book 4 was available for review I jumped in with both feet. I have loved this series from the first book Cursed by Fire and all the characters as well. But I think that Branded by Fire is by far my favorite.

Aria has come a long way since the first book but she is still trying to get a control on her powers and now she has more power than one person should have and it just may be too much for her. But with her growing feelings Declan may just be the only thing that can keep her grounded and in control of her powers if not then she could level a city.

Aria is still trying to deal with being mated to the Northwest Pacific Pack leader Declan Valkenaar. But he is growing on her in more ways than she cares to admit. I think old Declan is sort of growing on me as well. I didn’t like that Declan was the one to bond with Aria to save her life in book 2 Kissed by Fire. No I wanted it to be James, Aria’s best friend and I think James wanted it to be him as well.

I love this world of Blood & Magic with the kick a** witch with all that power and more male attendees than she would like. Branded by Fire is filled with lots of fighting and the use of magical powers that is unbelievable. I can’t wait for more adventures with Aria to see her use her powers and what all she can do. I also can’t wait to see how Aria and Declan’s relationship develops and how the Pack and Aria interacts with each other and how she is going to deal with all that babysitting that Declan and the Pack puts on her. What mysteries will Aria get us into to next?

I would recommend Branded by Fire and the whole Blood & Magic series to anyone who loves a good magical book that is filled with lots of goodness and powerful magical fighting with the help of shifters. We have tigers and bears and foxes and a whole lot more. Come join in on all the fighting. Be sure and pick up your copies of all the books in the series to enjoy this wonderful, amazing journey. I would suggest that you start with Cursed by Fire book 1, then book 2 Kissed by Fire and then book 3 Burned by Fire before starting book 4 Branded by Fire as I know you want to know Aria’s story from the beginning.

Branded by Fire (Blood & Magic # 4) by Danielle Annett Danielle Annett’s BRANDED BY FIRE is scorching hot.  The story takes place following book three, BURNED BY FIRE.  After nearly dying, Aria Naveed was mate bonded to Pacific Northwest Pack Alpha, Declan Valkenaar.  She is struggling to control her powers after being experimented on by H.A.C. (HUMAN ALLIANCE CORPORATION), while trying to avoid the catastrophic outcome of her prophecy.  This PNR is suitable for adult readers.

Danielle Annett continues to do an amazing job with her character development and plot.  The characters have grown and overcome numerous obstacles.  I like that the story is told from both Aria’s and Declan’s point of view.  I appreciate how their relationship evolved.  There is some interesting tension with Inarus.  My heart went out to Aria and everything she endured, especially with her mother.

BURNED BY FIRE was fast-paced and exciting throughout.  There were fascinating twists with unexpected outcomes.  My only complaint about this book is that it ended.  I enjoy this story so much I wanted it to keep going.  Needless to say, I am anxiously awaiting book five.  I love this series.  I would compare it to Ilona Andrews’ Kate Daniels series and Patricia Briggs’ Mercy Thompson series.  I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.

Fun short book. I have read this under two Hours.
A lot of urban fantasy with non to little romance and soft action scenes. Few kisses in Four books. Almost bordering ya. Still fun to continue with book 5 ... If it is mostly about these main characters.

So. It's hard to rate this book because it is a weird combination of plagiarism and fan fiction/mash up. I felt guilty reading it.

I don't know if it was laziness (in not putting the effort in crafting her own world) or Danielle Annett thinking imitation is the sincerest form of flattery literally... ha literar-ly (I'm sorry that was a terrible pun I'm ashamed of myself). It is like she took her favorite parts of other series and mashed them together to twist it into something she calls her own. Issue being you can't really turn other people's work into your own.

Here's the problem, it's not bad BUT if you took out all the other author's tidbits I don't know how much book you'd have left. You'd lose at least the two main characters, the factions, the Lyc-V/pack structure, the psychic part, some of the dialogue(direct quotes, I mean really?), arguably also the villainous organization as well... and no one has really put this out there but probably the dynamic between the main characters.

I felt guilty reading it- but again it's not bad. I'd say I liked it-probably because it pulls from authors- Ilona Andrews and Nalini Singh, mehbe a little Anne Bishop. And I love their works.

There was a snippet of originality in there somewhere that I did like- it's solid UF- unfortunately it's existence makes you question what is wrong with everyone that let this intellectual property theft out into the world unchallenged. If she/they get the sh*t sued out of her, I'd say she clearly has it coming.

Aria is having issues with her new power, and her mate. She still doesn't know if she should give him a chance or not, but when the bond starts to work in her favor to help her keep her powers stable, things start to shift for her.

Add in the fact that she has a whole lot of other issues coming into play and you have a very interesting story.

This book was really pretty good. It was pretty short, and sort of ended on a cliffhanger, but it was very good.

I loved the fact that Aria and her mate are getting closer together, and I look forward to more from them. I also liked how Aria was dealing with her new powers, and I can't wait to figure out what new stuff she will be able to do.

This was super short which I'm a little sad about because truth be told I wanted more but don't let the small number of pages deceive you, a lot happens in this shorter read.

We finally, FINALLY get some resolution to the whole mated thing which I am so grateful for because I don't know how much more of the drama and angst I could have taken and I loved seeing these two come together and for once, work as a team. It was just so great and I loved the whole pack dynamic.

I also really enjoyed that we get a few chapters told in Declan's POV. It was nice to see things from his perspective and to see how much Ari really means to him and how much he really cares for her.

I can't wait for book five and how it's a little longer and even more action packed and romance packed.

I'm working my way through this series in between other books, but I'm still getting through them rather quickly. This book in particular felt very very short! I guess that's good?

We join Aria immediately after the events of the previous book. She's got big, bad powers, and even with the warning from an all-knowing kid, she refuses to ask for help. Sigh. Aria is independent to a fault. This book also somehow restarts the annoying love triangle? At least this time it looks like Aria may have finally made some choices, thank goodness.

The overall story this time is more of the same - Aria's mom wants her, Declan needs her, and Inarus is annoyingly a puppy when he's with her. Aria's powers are out of control, and she's got to get a grip or destroy the world (or something). At the very least, she'd destroy the city. This book ends with some pretty intense destruction, but decisions, too (maybe). Here's hoping we get more James and less Inarus in future installments.

Painful, Burning & Crushing Emotions!😔🔥💥💔
Actions Have Consequences!😱💥

Branded by Fire (Blood & Magic #4)

Hurray, this book was such an improvement!!🎉 Aria finally starts to make a decision between Declan & Inarus. She pushes people's buttons like no other though.😳 What her 'Mother' attempted to do to her ends up having searing & serious consequences for her & those around her.😕 I hope she turns to the witches for help.🙏

This was a much better book, one I was happy to read.👍 There was less repetition from previous books & the pace is really picking up. Storylines are starting to move on, rather than being stuck in the boring circling pattern. Roll on book #5, I'm so hopeful it's as good or better!🙏

good book, good series

While I hate the idea of a mated pair as much as the main character, I will let it go because this is a decent book and a decent series. battles, angst and struggles to figure out who you are to someone is what this book is about. The MC has too much power and risks killing a city if she loses control and everyone, including he evil mother are pushing all her buttons. The characters are full, both with abilities and weaknesses, the world is well described, but I sure would like more of the worlds backstory, and the action is well written. If you have read all the best writers of urban fantasy then try this and I bet you will add this author to your best list.

Better than the first two but not the third. I read urban fantasy so I understand they’re not things that can really happen. But when reading a story and you assume the world. So when unbelievable things happen they tend to annoy. One of which, I honestly can’t believe that every time Aria tries to get her groove there’s some distractions. No one is that unlucky. Or for someone to be so pig headed, to have faced death so many times but still think they can handle the world on their own. As I said yes this is urban fiction but going for the cliché situations is unbelievable to me. At least she’s finally giving Declan a chance.

An enjoyable series

I read the entire series and really enjoyed it. The heroine is feisty and relatable on many levels. The books could stand a little finer editing for misspelled words or wrong usage, but there is not so much that it affected the flow. My only real critique beyond that is the propensity to repeat situational background. I understand it is to bring a new reader up to date, but in reality it doesn't really help...you need to read the pre ions books. I really enjoyed the series and look forward to rmore.

Hopefully we see the real Aria now

I've had problems with Ari in the past. She's been whiny, wishy-washy, and not owning up to her situation. The potential is there, which is why I've kept reading, but her treatment of the whole Declan situation drove me nuts. She's no Kate Daniels!

After this book I'm hoping to see real growth from her. She's owned up to her feelings so hopefully she doesn't change her mind like she has in all the other books, cuz then I'd be done for good.

Looking forward to the next book, hope it lives up to my expectations.

A big thank you to NetGalley for the ARC. I am voluntarily reviewing this book. First time reading this author. I took a chance since this is number four in a series. It does not read well as a stand alone. Once you get the premise it's actually an enjoyable book. It was a fast read and no true resolution. Not a ton of romance mostly paranormal. I would recommend starting with the first book.

You have to read the previous books to fully understand the world. I was able to pick up on what had happened, but knowing the previous books would have been appreciated.

I liked it. Moved fast. Aria is struggling with being mated to Declan and her new powers. A few life and death situations that cause them to admit how they feel about each other. A quick read, with an interesting world built up.

This was an interesting story. I just discovered it in the fourth book, I'll have to read the other three to get the full story, but it was a good story none the less. It was on the shorter side, and I finished it in about an hour much to my surprise. I liked the backbone to the story, though Aria made me roll my eyes on a pretty frequent basis with her antics. Thank you for the opportunity to review this work, and I will have to peruse other works by this author.

Crazy

So much craziness. Wow her mother is evil. Just wow. Still love Inarus. I do like Declan a little bit more. But he does still need to take responsibility for what he did. And recognize she is allowed to be upset and have trust issues. He did realize he tried to use her. I liked how he defended her against Robert and told him no one would use her abilities for gain. Helped out In Perspective what he tried despite being in love with her.

Its really sad when the main character is TSTL. The whole book I felt like was about how much power she has and how hard her life since she can not control her power. She comes across as not caring for other peoples feels and as a tease. Overall reading this book I can not help but think Ilona Andrews wrote it better.

Not sure about the cliffhangers

I’m living the series and the progression of the characters and storylines but every book is a cliffhanger ending. They don’t have to all be that way. I was glad Aria and Declan progressed as far as they did I this one and can’t wait to see how the bond continues.

Book 4 is solidly better than the first 2 and just a bit better than book 3. Aria is coming to terms with what everything means and no longer fighting alone - even if it feels like it sometimes.

Pros:
- Relationships - they get better, if more complicated.
- Aria: Bada$$
- Good editing
- doesn’t resemble Kate Daniels quite so much

Cons:

- poor choices - they make good plot points, but... really?
- Some continuity issues from previous book.

Growth

Finally Ari is growing in the relationship department. Parts of the story and Ari's character reactions really annoy me. I'm glad Ari has finally accepted Declan so I can pause/stop reading this series. As to the writing style, some rehash is acceptable, but these books go overboard and I end up skipping several pages due to the repetition.
