This is a GoodRead!.....I would have loved to hear Mike as the narrator and I believe that would have mad this a little more powerful, however this is a good AB and I believe Mike was open & honest which gives Mi a better since of who he is outside of performance. He could’ve used the assistance of a writer to polish the read, but that’s really no big deal. His approach to success is more relatable, whereas most ppl say they knew from the womb, Mike is more like DL where comdey was an escape or survival driven rather than dream-fulfillment and I can understand or relate more with that notion, needing a better life, outlet, & outlook.

I enjoyed this story and of course it made me laugh....there were stories that made me sad as well...Mike Epps has a very colorful past and I enjoyed his candor. You can see and feel the love and respect he has for his parents and his siblings. I also enjoyed the narration, despite not being narrated by mike himself....I thought the narrator was fun and also enjoyed reading the story and discovering more about Mike Epps as he read the story. Excellent Read!!!

I liked this book, but was hoping to read more behind the scene stories from his movies.
Mike’s life is a true rags to riches story, and what it means to never give up.
Easy read, worth checking out.

I don't know much about the actor, other than the movies that I seen him in. I always thought he was hilarious in films or stand up, he has a natural way of making people laugh. I will probably not recommend the book only because it was not as captivating as I wanted. This is not to say that the book was terrible, it was just good but not great. I did enjoy reading how he was raised and the triumphs that he endured but it was an average type of biography.

Nevertheless, if you are a fan of an actor, you may be surprised with some of the info that are discovered in the book. Especially when you go back to his early childhood, there is a lot of shocking information that took me by surprise.

It was a decent book, Mike Epps is a very comedic actor who I look forward to seeing on future films.

Mike seems like a nice guy. He's got a lot of growing to do and I love how honest he was about that. I don't think it's written well, but the sincerity makes up for it. I'd recommend this one if you're a fan of his work.

Mike Epps journey from Naptown to Hollywood is a somewhat middling look as his life from growing up poor in Indianapolis, IN to becoming a success in the world of comedy and movies. There are some funny passages, which is to be expected, he is a comedian after all. Mike’s life was challenging due to the economic situation his mother was fighting. Raising five children on mostly a single income,
“I mean, in those early days, even when we only had pennies, my mom never made us feel like we were that poor. A bowl of food would land on the table and I couldn’t even figure out how she got it there. To this day, I don’t know how she put together those meals while taking care of five kids and working. We ate a lot of spaghetti, because pasta fills you up and gives you energy, and it goes a long way.“

He refers to himself as a bad kid, but his mischief was born out of boredom and poverty. He tried his hand at crime but as the title hints at, he was unsuccessful for various reasons. The one thing that seemed to be consistent was his ability to make people laugh. When two barber friends bet him he wouldn’t get on stage and do standup at the local comedy club he not only won the bet, but he won the competition and he was on his way. He left Indianapolis and headed to Atlanta to take advantage of the more robust comedy scene there,
“I left Indianapolis with $85 in food stamps, a Walkman with two cassettes, and a broken .38 pistol (it only fired every third time you pulled the trigger), bound for Atlanta.“

He eventually made his way to New York and then cracked the comedy scene in LA which led to his breakout role in Next Friday. He will play Richard Pryor in a movie that should be released this year. Looking forward to that. Book is written in a very straight forward manner and as such doesn’t allow for much excitement. Of course readers will find humor in some of Mike’s antics and the situations he experienced but, aside from a few platitudes he doesn’t offer much in the way of advise that could be useful for aspiring comics. That is a missed opportunity I believe which detracts from the effectiveness of the book.

This ended up being a very good read for me, after starting out somewhat disappointing. Accordingly, this is a good example of why it’s important to finish a book, even when it starts out a little slow. Mike shares many poignant memories from his troublesome life that serve to uplift and inspire. And, what I found most gratifying about his memoir, aside from the aforementioned memories, is how well-grounded he has apparently remained. I now have a better appreciation for his art and gift to the world. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has gone through some “real stuff,” especially at an early age, yet won’t allow it to limit their accomplishments.

Although Ilove Mike Epps I cannot connect on any level of this book I found it very long and drawn-out and quite boring I appreciate him sharing this side of him but this is not what I thought it was going to be and I wouldn't recommend

It was OK--got too "Dear Diary-ish" in some parts, especially towards the end. More behind the scenes tales would've been great, not only that, but the non-mention of "Survivor's Remorse" baffles me.

I’ve had Unsuccessful Thug by comedian Mike Epps on my TBR for quite some time. Then, last week while searching for an audiobook. I finally decided to listen to Mike’s story.

First, let me start by saying if you plan to read this book I suggest you read the hard copy instead of listening to the audio version. It’s narrated by J.D. Jackson, not Mike Epps. And although Jackson’s inflection is kind of similar to Mike’s, unfortunately he lacked the comedic timing & tempo that is necessary to maximize the impact of Mike’s jokes.

I enjoyed reading how Mike made it to Hollywood. But I can’t say this is one of my favorite memoirs. It wasn’t as entertaining as I would have liked. For some reason, I found Mike’s story kind of predictable, like I’ve read it before. There are parts that are very similar to Kevin Hart’s story. Maybe that’s why his story felt familiar. The way both men left their families to travel the comedy circuit in search of success was parallel.

The most impactful moment for me was when Mike answered the question why he chose to not enter into a serious relationship with a woman. He had been asked this question repeatedly while on his journey to achieving his dreams. After booking his 1st big movie role in the film 𝙉𝙚𝙭𝙩 𝙁𝙧𝙞𝙙𝙖𝙮, he decided to answer this question. Mike wrote, “Your art is like being in a relationship. You have to spend quality time with it. You can’t leave it for a long time and come back to it and think it will still be there. You have to be faithful to it. You have to give it all you’ve got. As much as you put into it, that’s what you get out of it. How could you not be faithful to something that saved your life...something that pays you?” In other words, his career was his relationship! I loved that answer.

Other topics he touched on were: the beautiful relationship he has with his mom, time in jail, Ice Cube, feeling like an outsider in Hollywood, drug addiction, plus so much more.

In comparison to the many other memoirs I’ve read, unfortunately this one doesn’t fare well. It definitely does not make my list of great memoirs. As a result, I can only give it 3 1/2 ⭐️s.

Mike Epps has one of those stories that is raw, funny sad, unbelievable and will make you shake your head and empathize with his mother because he was bad as shit growing up!! I know he drove her crazy!! LOL 😆 I am glad that he tapped into his given talents though and made it to Hollywood. I have been a huge fan since I first saw him on screen. He’s also one of my biggest celebrity crushes. ♥️😍

His story talks about being raised with his brothers and sisters in poverty and moving place to place including his grandma’s house a couple times after being evicted. He talks about trying his hand at crime and selling drugs, but never really being good at it and his times in and out if juvenile correctional centers and jail. Once he discovers his love of making people laugh and chasing that dream, things finally turn around for him.

He credits comedy with saving his life and often goes back to his old neighborhood to talk to and encourage youth to do the same, find your talent and go after it hard.

Great memoir from one of my favorites.

I went on a little road trip a couple weeks ago and decided to listen to this audiobook. The book was pretty interesting and it really shows a rags to riches story from someone who actually came from nothing and worked his way up.

The ONLY critic I have is how much I wished it was Mike Epps himself reading this book. I felt like it would have been SOOO much better if his voice was telling the story of his life. I really enjoy reading about people’s lives. It helps make the person seem more real and Mike brings a ton of real throughout each chapter. Give this book a read (or listen).

4/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (He does mention the kangaroo incident)!

Much Respect to Mike Epps for writing .I did not think he experienced with drugs that young, 14 years old wow. In and out of jail, stealing, selling drugs a true come up. I can not believe he passed up the opportunity to meet with Steve Harvey after his Apollo gig. I am happy he took a chance on himself that is usually the hardest part for anyone. I am still waiting for the Richard Pryor Biopic I think that would be great considering Mike did well in Sparkle and Jumping the Broom more serious roles .

overall great read, I actually read some of the book with his voice in mind. He was transparent about his women and drug abuse. I recommend.

I like nonficion books by comedians because they are usually funny. Great vacation car ride audiobooks. Unsuccessful Thug is more serious than funny, but is an interesting biography regardless. A good hunk is about about his childhood in Indianapolis.

Only knock I can really give it is the audiobook wasn't read by Mike Epps. That said, since it was mostly serious, the book didn't need to rely on the author's timing, as audiobooks by Tina Fey or Jim Gaffigan do. J.D. Jackson did a good job.

Does make me want to see his biopic of Richard Pryor when it comes out though.

Adorable. I love stories where people accomplish their dreams. This is a step or two further than personable to the realm of honest and passionate--- for a man anyway. I've always said the best bios/ memoirs are honest, passionate, and juicy. Check on all 3.

Epps tells a LOT about his childhood and gives less on Hollywood,. for apparent reasons. Though he had a tough childhood, Epps manages to not leave these sections gloomy; however.

He brings together simple language, his account, and nuggets from his life for a good read.

I received an ARC from Edeilweiss and the publisher to read and review.

I enjoyed it! I appreciate Mike's honesty and candor. Of course, he made me laugh out loud while reading this book. Despite making it big, he wasn't afraid to apologize, either. Hey sister Julie! She is the real MVP!

I highly recommend reading this book, especially if you like memoirs. I learned a great deal about Mike and his come up, and I appreciate his story.

I enjoy stories that tell about someone's life. This book I feel would've been more interesting, comedic if read by the author. Or maybe he didn't intend for it to be funny. The reader didn't sound like Mike Epps but if he is the one that did the impersonation, he did a goid job. I guess the story would have felt more genuine. Mike discusses his life struggles which start at a very young age. Always trying to survive. I may have enjoyed this better if I read the book instead of audio.

Mike Epps' story reminds me of why I teach and that everything is not always what it seems. We wear so many faces for others that we can't deal with our true selves....do we even remember our true selves. A good read, remembering to be humble and not forget where you came from...because you could easily return. Take one day at a time.

This book is GREAT! Very well written and relatable. Many times I found myself laughing aloud and talking directly to Mike about. I loved Mike Epps before reading his autobiography. I am completely a huge fan after reading his autobiography.

He did not hold back too much to keep his image clean. An I appreciate that.

Loved this book!

Mike Epps has came a mighty long way while still being true to himself and others. I enjoyed reading about his journey......the good, the bad, the funny, the ugly, and the success. I'm glad God placed the right people in his life so that he could bless us with his talent. A must read; especially if you're a Mike Epps fan.

Funny read, only reason it’s 4 stars instead of 5 is that I wasn’t a fan of narrator. The cursing seemed awkward for him and not natural, He was a bit flat. I think if it was read by the author it would have been amazing! Great insight into this actor’s history with a motivational twist.
