Supernatural Companion Journals

John Winchester's Journal

Rate this book
Sam and Dean Winchester know all the secrets their father recorded in his journal. Now you can, too.

On November 2, 1983, Sam and Dean Winchester lost their mother to a demonic supernatural force. In the wake of the tragedy, their father, John, set out to learn everything he could about the paranormal evil that lives in the dark corners and on the back roads of America . . . and how to kill it. In his personal journal, he not only compiled folklore, legend, and superstition about all manner of otherworldly enemies but he also recorded his experiences—hunting the creature that killed his wife even as he raised his two sons.

Part prequel, part resource guide, John Winchester's Journal finally gives fans the ultimate companion book for Supernatural. It's all here: the exorcism Sam and Dean used in "Phantom Traveler," John's notes on everything from shape-shifters to Samuel Colt, Dean's first hunt, Sam's peewee soccer team . . . and John's single-minded pursuit of a growing and deadly evil.

Yesterday, I realized the reason Supernatural is my favourite TV show (notice, I'm not saying it's the "best" TV show, this is clearly The Wire and I'll fight you if you disagree) is probably because it's the saddest show I know. Am I that easy to get? Apparently yes.

So, on the surface Supernatural is about two brothers, Dean and Sam, who hunt monsters, demons, fight the devil, are best friends (or more, depending on how feel about the queer-baiting) with a fallen angel, alternately save and accidentally threaten to destroy earth, heaven and hell. I've heard it being described as a horror show, fantasy, Drama, dark fantasy, a supernatural procedural crime show, and it's all kinda true. In the early seasons it was more of "monster of the week" show, before that kind of dissolved into something else. Unlike a lot of people I don't think the show got gradually worse with each season, I think it's hit and miss most of the 13 of 14 seasons I've watched. There are a lot of moments that make me want to scream, when plot lines don't make sense, there's way too many inconsistencies or - most of all - when they just abort the best story lines completely.

Anyway, what I really wanted to say was: while all these genres are accurate, I mainly watch the show as a character study. That might be both the reason why I actually still love the later seasons and why the show frustrates me to no end. Two brothers in their 30s who've literally been to hell and back, who lose all their friends except for that one angel friend Castiel (who's a tragic figure in itself, having turned his back to heaven after choosing Dean above all else), who don't have any sort of stability or normalcy in their lives and who are both mentally not very well. I want to know this kind of stuff. I want to have a look at their fucked up ness through a magnifier. I live my TV like I like my novels: characters first, stories second.

Which is to say, mainly I watch this show for glimpses of a show it could be.

So, why am I talking about this, and what does it have to do with this book?

In the first season of the show Dean & Sam's father John is still alive. This is supposed to be the journal he's written between the death of his wife and his own death. The journal is pretty integral part of the early seasons, and I'd love to have an actual look at the thing - this is clearly not it.

The book is part "facts" about demons, spirits and the supernatural and part his thoughts about hunting cases and his family.

The passages about demons and ghosts and etc are really boring. I ended up skimming them, because they were so dry. Besides, I felt some of the things directly contradicted things said on the show.

The diary part was better, even though I felt the voice was off. It just didn't remind me of John at all. I understand that people can sound more soft-spoken in their diary than in real life, but for that it was also really emotionless. He writes about missing his wife, Mary, and trying to avenge her, but it didn't sound real. The very very short tidbits about Sam and Dean were good and quite sad, especially the ones about Sam, but they were just much too short. They did make me consider giving this book two stars instead of one, but really it's just not enough.

This book also doesn't really make sense as John Winchester's actual journal, because the show makes it clear that Sam and Dean have read the journal, but some of things mentioned in here they don't know until much later (or not at all, I think).

Mainly, this book has made me crave a really good fanfiction backstory chronicling John & Mary's lives.

(Congrats, if you have never watched Supernatural and read all the way through...)

John Winchester's journal won't do much for you if you're not a fan of Supernatural, but if you are, it's an ultimate geeky resource. It contains all the bits we've seen from the journal in the show, at least up to 2009, and lots of little extra tidbits and stories about the young boys. We learn about the first time Sam walked -- took a few steps towards Dean and fell on his face -- and stuff like the fact that Sam is an evangelical Mac user, Dean's first solo hunt involved the ghosts of lesbian nuns, and what John did for their birthdays. You see a side of John that we didn't see so much in the show, and you have to wonder how much Sam was exaggerating the horrible way John raised them. You see the side of John that's a father, not a drill sergeant. Parts of the journal seem to be written, parts to the boys, and parts just record interesting hunting information. There are some nice little bits about how John sees his boys, including one really good bit about how when Sam sets his mind on something he won't change it, "you might as well wrestle angels".

Very fun. Not visually how I expected -- I expected it to be more like what we saw in the show, not a neat little book with typed pages, but I don't think it's meant to be a physical replica of John's diary. I'm not sure how canonical it is, and I haven't read it cover to cover, so there may well be bits missing. There aren't any replica newspaper clippings or anything 'tucked in' so it's possible some of the information from the series isn't in there. It's still interesting and if you like fanfiction, I think you could pull some nice details from it.

It makes reference to episodes (e.g. Something Wicked) and the comics (I know there's stuff from Rising Son) so beware of spoilers.

Supernatural is one of my all time favourite tv series. This book doesn't show REAL characters of Supernatural. John is sad, depressed, in grief while tv series shows him as tough, kinda cold person. In both ways we can see his love and devotion to his family. But the book gave me pesimistic vibes and I felt like I didn't like his character at all.

Overall, it's really unique format (I am not a fan of the handwriting font in this book, tho) and I had new experience reading it.

I recommend it only to Supernatural fans.

sam should've been allowed to commit patricide, as a treat

here are the only good quotes:

"dean still hardly talks... every morning when i wake up, dean is inside the crib, arms wrapped around baby sam. like he's trying to protect him from whatever is out there in the night."

"[dean] makes me swear that i'll take good care of sammy before he'll go to school."

"...dean watches his little brother like a hawk every minute, with an expression on his face that says he's willing to die to keep sammy safe...i have drilled it into dean that sammy is his responsibility. he's eight years old, and i've told him his brother's life is in his hands."

I go this from my brother for Christmas as he knows I'm a total nutter for my Winchester brothers! This book gives us an insight into John's grief and the boys' childhood, and how John basically forced Dean to grow up way too soon so he would look after his little brother. I skipped over some bits that were just about different monsters, but I'm still glad I read it and can add it to my shelf of Supernatural collectables!

The book, in and of itself, was interesting. A lot of lore and information on mythology and (especially) demonology- if you want culturally specific spirits, creatures and the like, this one's definitely for you. I was particularly facsinated with a brief period in the book where he fixated on water spirits and the puca, a mythical horse that's said to appear on Nov. 1st and take unsuspecting riders on a hellish romp and then give them advice if it feels like it. Sounds pretty badass to me- made me wonder why we haven't seen it on the show.

The only thing that I catagorize as "bad" would be the extensive page-time devoted to quoting other texts. At the best, it's informative but tedious, and at the worst, it's two pages that you either skim or don't read. I don't think the constant quoting and citing was necessary: references to the works would have been sufficient.

The bulk of the book, however, was kind of mediocre. Those looking for a deeper exploration into John as a character or his feelings and experiences will be mildly disappointed; every so often, John will delve into the personal with a really beautiful, poignant sincerity. He's devastated by the loss of his wife, alternately burdened and saved by the need of his sons, and overwhelmed by the world of hunting as he begins to descend into it- he definitely came a long way to become the near legend he was when he died. John only seems to fixate on a few dates: the day Mary died, his and Mary's anniversary, and Dean and Sam's respective birthdays. His assessments of the boys are heartbreaking- all the way from Sam taking his first steps (towards Dean, no less) to Dean inheriting the Impala and Sam exploding and leaving for Stanford. Those parts are so well done that it's a shame they're so few and far between.

In summary, John's journal is exactly what it was meant to be- an invaluable tool for young hunters who need guidance on what they might be facing. But it feels like it was two separate journals shoved together- the one where John talks about how damaged he is, and the one where John talks about hunting. I can't imagine that Sam and Dean could have read this without some serious emotional moments, and those are never addressed.

I recommend you read it if you love the show because, hey, John. Not to mention the great moments of personal impact. But all in all, it tries to be two different things too hard and because of that, kind of misses the mark it could have made on both.

Very definitely a niche book for fans of the tv show Supernatural. This is supposed to be John Winchester's journal, which was quite a plot point a number of times. I thoroughly enjoyed it, though it did get repetitious here and there, and could have been way more fleshed out at times. Still, my fan girl is squeeing over such entries as:

January 24: I gave Dean the Impala today for his eighteenth birthday. The car is 30 years old now, amazing it runs as well as it does. I've taught Dean a lot of what I know about working on cars, which was everyhting until 1983. Haven't kept up since then, all the computers and emissions spaghetti drives me nuts. Give me a fat 327, no electronics, just pistons, crankshaft and a gas pedal. That's a car. And now it's my son's. He knows I'll still be driving it, but he's a man now, and since he's already made his share of kills, this was the only rite of passage I could thing of. He better goddamn well better take care of it.

Since I am hooked on the TV Series I was excited to actually get to read the journal. Sorta disappointed! Not as interesting as Sam and Dean make it out to be in the TV Series. Wish it would have been better

I wanted to read this book for a very long time, basically, the moment when I started watching Supernatural and figured out this book existed. I don't even watch Supernatural anymore, still call myself a bit of a fan of at least the first seasons but this book was not really what I expected. I don't see how Dean and Sam learned from their dad's journal how to defeat a monster as basically from all the entries, 4-6 write down what to do. Bury the bones or the remains and use salt beforehand thank you very much.

It was still very interesting but I expected more grandeur. Oh well it was worth to read at some point :)

So so happy to be back in the world of Supernatural, and it was great having a new perspective from before the show began and from John Winchester's POV. Some of the things I really liked about this journal and what really made it work was seeing John's transformation from being a father who's lost, fearing for his sons' safety and regretting that he can't give them a normal life, to being a hunter/hunter father who only wants his sons to be prepared for what's out there and help him avenge their mother’s death. It was also nice seeing Sam and Dean develop into themselves, how Dean almost instinctively knew to look after Sammy from the beginning, and that John truly loved and cared for his sons despite how he is portrayed in the show. I really liked how the journal connected to events from the short animated Supernatural series - particularly where Ms. Lyle was concerned, but I also liked how it mentioned John acquiring so much stuff he needed a storage unit Sam and Dean find later in the show. It was nice seeing that in every year John kept track of Dean and Sam's birthdays, his and Mary's wedding anniversary, and the anniversary of Mary's death. Two journal entries I was glad to read were when Sammy announced he was leaving for college, and 9/11. The entry for Sammy leaving just added to the impact of the Winchester's splitting after being together for so long. As for 9/11, I liked how it helped connect real-life to Supernatural - especially since it held such a huge impact to the world, but it was also interesting to see 9/11 through a hunter's POV.

As much as I enjoyed reading portions of John Winchester's journal, there were a few problems I ran into. My biggest problem was that there was no journal entry on John meeting Bobby Singer! My top three characters have always been Dean, Cas, and Bobby, and considering how important Bobby was to the show and being a second father figure to Sam and Dean, I expected a journal entry on how John and Bobby met. Maybe even a few journal entries later as when Bobby is first introduced in the show, he seems to have issues with John and therefore semi-reluctant to help Sam and Dean at the beginning. I was glad to read other journal entries including Bobby, but I feel that only makes my point. There was an entry where John left Sam and Dean with Bobby. John has trust issues, so just randomly mentioning Bobby in a journal entry, then a few entries later mentioning leaving Sam and Dean with him? It doesn't add up with John's character, especially his protective nature as he begins to realize Sam is a target.

Another problem was that there was too much Latin that wasn't translated. There was just pages and pages of text you couldn't read and it just took up space. I understand that some of the Latin was important as it involved Exorcisms and making Holy Water, but when it becomes 3.5 pages long, why have it in there? John could've just mentioned that he learned it, knowing him even complain how long it was but so long as it got the job done. John also would've made sure Sam and Dean knew the words like the back of their hand so they wouldn't need to look it up when a situation arose where they needed it. If the Latin had to be in there, at least translate it so the reader can know what they are saying, otherwise it's just wasted space that could've been used for more journal entries.

Then there was the dual writing that gave me a headache. The journal begins in Times Roman Numeral (or some similar font), and then it switches to script font similar to handwriting. I understand the point of that, but 1) The font chosen for the script was a little harder to read, and 2) Both the written portions and Times Roman Numeral entries and passages are meant to be John Winchester's writings of his thoughts, feelings, etc. I didn't see the point of having whole sections of the journal in handwritten script since this was the case. If it was a note made on the side margin maybe, but whole passages when the same thing was happening in Times Roman Numeral? No.

And then there was the added in articles. They just felt thrown in there, and I didn't like reading them because there was no context and as a reader some of them didn't make sense. As John goes through his journal, I realize he would understand what those articles and add-ons meant as he's the one who put them there, but this is also John Winchester's journal that was published with the intention of being read by Supernatural fans. There should've been a few extra sentences explaining John's thought process on why these articles were relevant and why they needed to be added to his journal. Also, Sam and Dean use their dad's journal in the show, so maybe the additional explanations could've been used to help him? John knows hunting is a dangerous job, so maybe additional information could've been written down to help his sons if something had happened to John prior to the show.

Lastly, the journal had a fitting ending, but I still felt a little letdown. The ending is pretty much "I'm on to you, you S.O.B." which I liked, but it still doesn't explain why John cut ties with Dean entirely. That was the whole point and where the show truly started - Dean losing contact with John so he went to ask Sam for help. John mentions discovering something and wanting to keep it secret from the boys - which I get - but he still kept Dean in the dark. It’s one thing not to tell Dean as John was worried he'd do something rash and stupid (if it involves protecting Sam, naturally), but that still doesn't explain why John didn't keep in touch with Dean just enough so he wouldn't worry and wouldn't try to come after him. I would've liked to have known his reasoning for it, because that was why we got the show I love so much.

Again, for the most part I did enjoy reading this journal. I learned a little Latin as I did translate portions of it, and I really did love reading the entries involving John, Sam, and Dean. It made me feel closer to the characters and added to my understanding of why John, Sam, and Dean were the way they were on the show. Everything considered above, I wouldn’t mind reading a journal by Dean.

Finally finished reading this last night. As a big fan of the series, I had high hopes for this prequel (maybe impossibly high hopes). I could have marked it down for feeling a bit disjointed in places but the more I think about it, the more that added to the effect of it being a personal journal of a traumatised individual.
What made me mark it down was that I felt some parts could have been elaborated much more, whilst other parts seemed laboriously dragged out. I felt it had a solid and believable start but it faded out quite a lot towards the end.
Perhaps part of the problem stems from how long it took me to complete it; so by the time I finished it I'd lost the feel of the first half. Reading back over the first few pages confirmed this for me; so perhaps I should give it another chance and rethink my rating. I definitely don't regret reading it though. I's certainly worth a read for fans of the series, as it develops the characters well and sets up perfectly for the start of the tv series.

This was a fun read, but I found some of the entries on supernatural beings to read sort of like a textbook, which I wasn't fond of. I did like the sections about Sam, Dean, Bobby, and Mary though, it was nice to see little bits of their past and what John might have been thinking at the time. I don't like John Winchester, I think he is a horrible father, but this was still an enjoyable read. I can't believe this show is ending soon, I don't know what I'm going to do with myself

Yes, I'm a rabid fangirl, and yes, I completely loved this book. Hell, I'll take every bit of additional canon that I get my hands on, because this show has yet to produce canon that isn't made of awesome (unlike other shows, where you really don't want to look at canon too closely, especially not the extra-tv-kind)

My hear bleeds for John, for the hurt that is always there in and between the lines, but also for the boys, because over the years the hurt turns into obsession, and well, we all know how that ended. Turned both your sons into hunters (definitely not what Mary wanted), and got them both killed in the process (good thing that death is so easily reversible these days), did you, John?

Well, you suck at being a dad and we all know it, but we still love watching you be a dad. Or reading about it. Because between all the horror and obsession and pain, there's always love, and, you know, there's LOVE.

God, I'm such fangirl, it's embarassing. I think I'm gonna hide over here with my SPN DVDs and books and be embarassed for a while now.

Within the last year I have become a big fan of the tv show "Supernatural". I've tried to stay away from the tie-in books after attempting to read "Bone Key" and after Dean reffered to Sam as "Sammich" I decided that I was done with the genre; I could find better characterization in fanfiction, thank you very much.

But I had been interested in the journal, thinking it would be interesting and it was.

I found it fascinating the way the authors painted John's grief morphing into obsession with each passing year, his struggle with his sons and his own self. I enjoyed getting a little glimpse into the younger life of Sam and Dean (though not ALL of the stories were canon, such as Dean graduating high school; it's been stated on the show he only has a G.E.D. and Sam taking an extra year to graduate because of their constant moving) but it was still fun to imagine.

It's obviously not a piece of great American literature, but it is a fun read for any Supernatural fan. :)

Love this book.
It very insightful about who John was and what he went though after Mary's death you definitely feel through out the book that John loved Mary and misses her with every entry that he writes in his journal. I felt John's pain and sadness over losing his wife and how much he struggle to be a hunter but not lose sight that he was a father of two young boys.

if John Winchester has no haters,i'm dead.

Dean still hardly talks. I try to make small talk, or ask him if he wants to throw the baseball around. Anything to make him feel like a normal kid again. He never budges from my side—or from his brother. Every morning when I wake up, Dean is inside the crib, arms wrapped around baby Sam.

I know he should be able to run around with other kids, who don’t know how to fi eld-strip the Browning. Well, Dean doesn’t either, yet. But he’s learning.
He’s got a talent for guns. I can see it already. And he’ll need it.

Sammy took his first steps yesterday. He walked toward Dean, then fell flat on his face and started crying. Life is tough, kid.
Do I sound like a proud dad? I am.

Took Dean shooting. If he’s big enough to try to comfort me, he’s big enough to start learning the tools of the trade. I only let him fire the .22, but he is a deadeye marksman. My drill sergeant would have taken him over me in a second. Times like this, I sure am proud of my boy. I have a feeling it’ll be different with Sammy. Maybe he’s just too young to show it, but I don’t think he’s got the same kind of killer instinct.

For his seventh birthday, I took Dean shooting again. He wanted to fire one of the big guns—that’s what he called them.

She doesn’t know that Dean watches his little brother like a hawk every minute, with an expression on his face that says he’s willing to die to keep Sammy safe. She doesn’t know how it tears me up inside to see that expression, and to know that it’s there because I have drilled it into Dean that Sammy is his responsibility. He’s eight years old, and I’ve told him his brother’s life is in his hands. Mary, I didn’t have any right to do that. But what else could I do?

But sons have to be soldiers. And soldiers adapt.

Sammy is five today. Thank God. He almost didn’t make it.
I could blame Dean, but it’s my fault. There’s enough blame to go around. missed the kill, and I left Dean watching Sam, and he couldn’t pull the trigger when he needed to. I haven’t taught him well enough. If he is weak like that again, my boys will die . . . but what kind of father am I to put a nine-year-old boy in a situation where he might have to kill to protect his brother?

But if you buy demons, you have to buy Hell, and if you buy Hell, you have to buy Satan, which means you have to buy God, right? I can’t sign on to one belief if it means I have to take the others.

Sam gets resentful and has some trouble handling his temper. Dean tries to fix everything and keep us together as a team. Neither of them should have to do those things.Especially Dean. I have to be hard on him because one of these days I’m not going to be around, and he’s the one who’s going to have to look out for his brother. He’s a badass, though. I thought I was tough when I was thirteen, but Dean would have kicked my ass six ways to Sunday.

Last night, Sammy woke up in the middle of the night telling me he was afraid of the thing in the closet. I went and looked.
There was nothing in the closet, but I’ve seen too much not to believe that there could be. So I handed Sammy the .45 and told him the next time he saw the thing in the closet, he knew what to do.

Dean turns fourteen today. He took off to the movies with a girlfriend. I think her name is Katie. Quite the ladykiller, that kid. Like I was at his age.
Hell-raising, foul-mouthed, full of piss and vinegar. Silas had it right: he’s like me. If I’m not careful with him, by the time he’s twenty he’ll have left a trail of kids and arrest warrants all over the country.

Sammy is eleven years old today. When Dean turned eleven, he wanted a gun of his own. Sammy asked me for a computer. That right there tells you all you need to

Dean turns seventeen today. We went shooting. Then I sent him out on his first hunt. I’ve let him take the lead before, but I’ve always been there to back him up. This time he’s on his own. Partly it’s a test, and partly I wanted some time with Sammy.

Sammy is thirteen today. He’s finishing sixth grade, a year late and with all the grudges to show for it. When Dean hit this age, I started to worry about girls, booze, drugs . . . all the regular stuff. With Sammy, I don’t worry about that. What worries me is that he’s got so much bottled up inside him that when it comes out, he won’t be able to control it. I think that’s part of why he has the dreams. He’s different, my Sammy. I think he’s a little haunted by being in the room with Mary when she was killed. He feels like he should remember something, or be able to offer a clue. God, it must be terrible to know you witnessed something but that you’ll never be able to remember it or tell anyone about it. I think he also wonders about Ms. Lyle. Dean and I never told him the whole story.

I gave Dean the Impala today for his eighteenth birthday. The car is 30 years old now, amazing it runs as well as it does. I’ve taught Dean a lot of what I know about working on cars,

Dean turns twenty-one today. I’d buy him a beer if I thought it would be something new. He’s also old enough to buy his own guns now. I tried to raise him right, and looks like I did.
He’s a scam artist, a ladies’ man, and an absolutely loyal son.
He knows what’s right and doesn’t hesitate to do it. I’m proud of him. Now that he’s hunting on his own I don’t see as much of him, but I know he’s out there. When I call him in on a job, he’s right there every time. I’ve spent the last sixteen years afraid that I was going to screw him up somehow. Maybe now I can forget about that.

Sammy is eighteen years old today. Surprised he didn’t take off. We’re not getting along too well. He hunts when we need him to, but he’s never committed himself the way Dean did.

Dean’s never known any other way to live, or if he has, he doesn’t act like it.
He’s playing the role he was born to play.

Sam told me and Dean today that he is going to Stanford. I told him that if he goes, he better stay gone. I think Dean would have taken a swing at him if I hadn’t kept my cool. Barely.

Dean’s like me. He doesn’t talk. He acts.
We act.

If you haven't seen, or are not a fan of, the TV show Supernatural, I wouldn't recommend this.

I love Supernatural.

This was both exciting and disappointing. I wanted less lore and more talk of John dealing with the loss of Mary, raising Sam and Dean, and interactions with Sam and Dean.

There is a lot of lore, which is interesting. Kind of. Some of it was just lists of names (unsolved disappearances, unsolved murders, and some I don't even know what they were.) Some of the book is in Latin, which, of course, I don't know.

There were some chronological inconsistencies, as well. The show has Sam and Dean reading and studying the journal but this book has things they find out about other than John's journal.

It was interesting but not everything I had hoped for.

• 𝙹𝚘𝚑𝚗 𝚆𝚒𝚗𝚌𝚑𝚎𝚜𝚝𝚎𝚛'𝚜 𝙹𝚘𝚞𝚛𝚗𝚊𝚕 •⠀
