Rest 20% is solid information, probably because Digital Detox isn't as complicated. But writing a book is, hence the length. Some info is good, happy treasure hunting.
The title of the book has 21 words in total where it could have been done away with two words. Same goes with contents of the book also. Though mostly everything which author has described is useful, it is quite repetitive in nature. Same points are discussed again and again at many places - something which we used to do in student days to make our answer seem long to examiners. :) If you can skim through the repetitive topics, it’s a good book on the subject.
Most of us live in a world surrounded by digitial technology. The lure of computer, phone and tablet allowing us to text, check emails and social media, watch YouTube or read blogs can lead to a bombardment of information overload, which doesn't allow our brains sufficient time to rest and digest. Worse, it can lead to an addiction that disrupts our sleep and social lives. This book gives some useful information on how to detect whether you have developed this addiction and if so, how to deal with it. It was an easy read; I zipped through it in a couple of days. I did find a lot of unnecessary repetition and some irritating grammatical and spelling errors ('different than', 'an addiction to heroine' eg) which could have done with more careful proof-reading, but on the whole, I found it very helpful.
This was definitely interesting to read. We do live in a technological world so a wide percentage of people have the "digital disease" of letting technology take over our lives.
While I felt that a good chunk of this book was very repetitive (and I mean repetitive) it was interesting none the less.
Honestly much better than I was expecting. It felt a little redundant and repetitive, like it could have been half the amount of pages but after some introspection, I’ve said that about a few books recently and I think that might be due to my decreased attention span haha
Almost 2 years ago, I finally committed to deactivating my Instagram. I had just finished reading “Digital Minimalism” by Cal Newport and at first it felt like such a huge sacrifice but within a month or two I felt a huge weight lifted from my shoulders and pretty much altogether stopped feeling the anxiety and stress of FOMO. I really like how this book talks about the “Joy of Missing Out.” I’ve seen first hand how FOMO can take a hold of someone and cause them to actually “miss out” on the moment and the relationships that are right in front of them in the present because of their distorted image if what they think they could be doing instead.
Even after deactivating my Instagram and seeing some immediate improvements in my mental health and social life, it was really just one head of the beast haha I feel like I have still been grappling with a slowly increasing addiction to my phone. Whether it’s getting stuck watching 3 hours of YouTube shorts or the same amount of time playing Super Auto Pets or watching Sports, I still have the urge to whip out my phone in my downtime and feed my addiction.
Becoming more self-aware is a step on this journey. The chapters seem so simple and obvious yet I still suck at being consistent with the principles. But this book provides good perspective and helps to keep the end in mind. Why do I want to kick my screen addiction and are the benefits worth the hassle.
Awareness -> Action -> Habit -> Character
This is a double edged sword but I agree with Aristotle that we are what we repeatedly do. The nice thing about that is that anyone can change, you just have start at the fundamentals and be consistent.
I think Damon does a good job at illustrating how easy it is to become addicted to our phones and not being high and mighty about it (We all know we shouldn’t use them as much as we do and we all fall short of being where we want to be at). I feel like he could have been better at mentioning how much money and research goes into making us addicted by all the different platforms and tech companies (I don’t know the actual number or if it can be found but I’m sure it’s in the billions!).
If this book is interesting to you and you haven’t already read “Digital Minimalism” by Cal Newport I would recommend that one next

It’s worth underscoring that technology can improve our lives. It can boost our productivity and increase our effectiveness at everything we do. But it’s just a tool. And like any tool, it can wreak havoc if used poorly or thoughtlessly.
When was the last time you remember you spent a day without mobile, or even few hours without mobile or any other electronic device?
It may sound cliché, but phones are now known as extended body part, and even spending an hour or two without it can make one anxious. Though in meeting, training, or having meal at restaurant, phones prove to be more damaging than helpful.
Damon shares short list of choices of technology addicts like phones, computers, The internet, video games, social media, News media, emails, blogs, and forum, You tube.
Few 🔑 Points –
• The book defines Technology addiction, reasons for getting hooked, explains adverse effects, guides readers how to prepare and do digital detox and the benefits one can expect from it. Digital detox is quick read and prepares one for implementing ideas in it with step-by-step guide.
• All addictions, from an obsession with gambling and drugs to video games and technology, are based on the same fundamental dynamic: the brain’s expectation that engaging in a particular activity will produce a reward.
• Researchers have found that tech addicts are more inclined to feed their addiction because the gadgets that make it possible are everywhere. They’re always within reach.
Few 📌 Quotes –
1. All email and social media notifications, combined with our inability to ignore them and unwillingness to turn them off, ensure our continued addiction.
2. At the core of every addiction, whether it’s to technology, cocaine, or sex, is an inability to resist the compulsion to act.
3. Its unsurprising people are willing to say things online they would never say in the physical presence of others.
4. social media is arguably one of the most insidious “drugs” of choice among technology addicts.
Read this less for a how to on how to digitally detox, and more to understand all the (many, many) reasons WHY you should. Those alone will motivate you to put your phone down. This book is repetitive at times, but overall it's very informative and really lays out all the negative impacts tech has on our daily lives.
One part that really hit close to home for me was how we use response times to reflect our importance to others, and vice versa, leading to increased stress, depression and low self esteem. I'm someone with many people in my life who "take it personally" when I don't respond to texts right away. I'd never really paused and thought about the effect this was having on me emotionally. After reading this book, it's made me more motivated to set boundaries and not be afraid to step away from my phone.
It was a good book and useful in providing the effects of technology and the benefits of a digital detox. I will definitely be doing one soon. Like others have said in their reviews, the book was very repetitive. I think it can benefit those who take their time reading the book to refresh their memories, but if you're a fast reader and/or have a good memory, it can get a little boring because of it.
A very average book. There were a few key points that he basically repeated again and again but with a new heading each time and absolutely no more information to emphasise the point previously mentioned. There didn't seem to be much research to back up points and overall, this book just seemed to be a little too basic and straightforward for my liking.
Picked up this book out of curiosity and felt like I left with surface level insights and some weird hobby ideas. As other reviewers said, it stated the obvious. That said, I will give a 24 hour phone detox a try once in a while to see if it helps unwire my brain to want to reach for it when I’m bored.
So unbelievably repetitive. It’s like this was originally an article that he tried to make long enough for a book by just repeating himself over and over. Read How to Break Up with Your Phone instead.
This is a good book for those who are starting their journey of digital detoxing. It's very similar to other books I've read on the topic, and it was too 'surface level' for me. I would have liked more depth. It was very repetitive and a struggle to pick up at times.
With the digital influence captivating every hour of our lives, we really need practical tips on coming off the greatest addiction of our generation. D. Zahariades gives many practical suggestions in this area in this book.
A great book if you need it, I didn't. But it's very well written and actionable, much like all of Damon's works. I would recommend it if you are in need.
