I think I read a different book everyone else read.

Problem 1: Time has no meaning in this book

Starting with the opening, Imogen's HS graduation day. Typically HS graduation is in June, somewhere between the second and third weeks, depending on if the school built in "unforeseen" circumstance days (snow, inclement weather, etc). Imogen goes from missing that ceremony to learning she's Fae to arriving at Callador (Fae College basically) for the first day of classes. In less then 8 hours.

Let that sink in.

Meanwhile her mom pointedly says she would be home for summer break. Except the first day of classes are in June, a month not part of the traditional two semester college schedule.

The book takes place over a year - a fact I know because they celebrate a birthday for Imogen near the end. Large leaps of time occur where much of the world worlding and character relationship growth happen. Or so we're told. "weeks" will pass with Imogen telling us stuff happened. Stuff we never see.

Problem 2: Imogen is every bad MC trait

She's judgy. She's quick to make assumptions. She's reckless. She's impatient. She doesn't listen. She is contrary.

She takes an intense dislike to Erick because she feels he looks down on "ashlings". Largely she bases this belief on the fact the teacher says he is assisting and Erick does just that. Every thing he says is a DIRECT INSULT towards her somehow.

She doesn't follow Erick's advice to stay at the classroom for class. She asks intrusive politically charged questions about the Unseelie Court with little thought to the consequences (imagine if some transfer student started and decided to ask a visiting diplomat to the school his thoughts on how trash fire America is right now. That's what Imogen does).

Problem 3: Love Triangle

I could care less. Literally.

Basically this book worked on no level for me. Imogen already seems "Chosen One" like and I'll lay off her father is someone UBER IMPORTANT and she's secretly an Unseelie member.

2.5 ~ Interesting premise, but poor execution. The world building is near nonexistent and I did not connect with any of the characters. Immature and flawed (not in an endearing way) mc who doesn't know why her mother moves them every couple of months. She doesn't know that she being hunted, that she is half fae and is supposed to go to a fae realm school when she turns 18, nor does she know her absentee fae father's real name and is thus labeled a halfbreed ("ashling").... Spoiler Alert....

bastard ("Flareburn"). She knows nothing of the fae, but 8 hrs after hearing she is fae, leaving her mom and entering the fae realm she immediately knows something is not right and no-one else can solve it. Only she knows how to investigate the trouble and sees the connections. She is too powerful and can't control her abilities, therefore risks being expelled from the realm and having her powers bound before she figures it out.

Grrr lol It was hard to continue at times. A lot of eyerolling on my part. I am pretty sure I know where it will go next, but I will watch the reviews carefully before continuing.

A feisty read, full of adventure and intrigue. The emotional roller coaster this story has, keeps you glued to the pages.
I loved the characters and the insight of the main character, love how the feed off of one another!
Not m normal read, but I recommend it to lovers of the Fae!

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review and this doesn't in any way influence my opinion on it.
description
A Curse of Fire by Sophia Shade is one of the best darned books I've read in a while. Imogen has been on the run with her mom most of her life but she never knew what exactly they were running from. After her Eighteenth birthday and they had to move yet again, Imogen decided she's had enough. A confrontation with her mother led to her realising the truth and the danger behind it. Imogen is half fae and she has to join the Fae Academy Callador to learn how to control her powers and what being Fae entails. At first reluctant to leave her mother, Imogen realises she has to go to fully understand herself. The Fae realm was intimidating at first glance but through the help of her new friends, the halls of Callador became less daunting. One thing I love about this book is the fast pace, it's so much fun to read it. It is a YA book and it enjoys that fun, many YA books have main characters that are way too mature than they should be. Imogen is not precisely immature but she is exactly as a teenage should be depicted. Going through her first crush on a Fae Prince while juggling schoolwork, learning control of her powers while making new friends (and sometimes enemies) and also battling an absurd connection with her annoying yet sometimes (most times) swoon worthy magic tutor Erick.
Imogen's time in Callador was nice to read about because it has a lot of mysteries to decipher, little tidbits of information dropped here and there that promise really interesting stuff in future books in the series, it's a lot like high school just with supernaturals, magic, chaos and danger.
Imogen's group of friends are like a close tight knit family, I love the way they all seem to gravitate with each other. Their camaraderie is one of the great things about this book.
The romance aspect is just plain FUN, it's a complicated love triangle that has so many crazy twists and turns that just left me laughing at times and gushing at how cute it is some other times. Imogen, Caleb and Erick are in a situation that's definitely going to get more messed up as the series progresses and I can't wait to read that. (I'm already team #Erick though, even if I want to deck him at times).
The mystery aspect of it was very well handled, I didn't see it coming and it definitely swept me off my feet. While it's obvious at the end there's still more to the story than has been revealed, I still enjoyed it.
A Curse of Fide has a lot to offer, action, magic, Fae, hot guys, romance, mystery, adventure and a cover that's beautiful.
The ending left me thirsting for more and as there have been many teases of delicious things to come in the series, I certainly can't wait for what's next. Sophia Shade has impressed me with her engrossing writing and I happily recommend this book to every YA reader.

P.S: Be prepared to have so many theories by the end of the book!! The one keeping me up most is: Who is Imogen's father?. I feel like this is going to be very important.

Down the rabbit hole we go

The story started off okay and then the love triangle developed. I am not a huge fan of those and Caleb who is an unseelie prince seems more boring than Eric who is Seeley. I expected more the bad boy with an attitude but the roles are reversed. The whole way through with everyone falling sick the fae are very blaise and do not seem worried at all. Imogen is the only person determined to find the killer and there is no build up in this book it just cruises along at the same pace. No cliffhanger ending and no real explanation of what powers the fire fae have. I was disappointed with the lack of world building in this book and would have liked to learn about the other faeries and their powers as well as the dark and light courts and the Winter's ball which was not mentioned at all but was apparently the biggest event of the season.

A Curse of Fire was better than I was expecting.

Let's start here: The author, Sophia Shade, has really all but up and disappeared. She has not been heard from since early 2018 when the third book in this series, A curse of Sparks, was published. Even now, all her blogs and what not have been deleted. The books are clearly unfinished and you can longer even by the ebooks on Amazon. They are unavailable. I had to borrow book 2 and 3 from a friend.

I think it's pretty crappy of an author to just up and leave in the middle of a series with no explanation. At least tell us you're disappearing , or that you won't be continuing the series. To just leave readers high and dry is pretty disrespectful when we all take the time to read your work. I didn't find out till I was done with book 1 and I was livid because I'm already pretty invested. Poor manners, Sophia Shade, very poor manners.

The book itself was a lot of fun. It had some grammatical mistakes that were big enough that I didn't know what the characters were trying to say. I in general liked our MC though, Imogen. She's spunky and cynical. The magic school plot really sold me though. I mean, hello, Harry Potter throwback. Though, the book does straight rip of some things, such as the dining hall ceiling imitating the weather outside.

The school is a school for Fae and Half-fae. Imogen's mom has spent her life moving them every 2-3 months in order for Imogen to never know she is half-fae. Her mom is a bit messed in the head to be honest, and doesn't want Imogen to go to school and learn about her fae ancestry for no reason other than her dad just up and left and she now hates the fae. Imogen is pretty ticked about being thrown into the fae realm absolutely unprepared, and I don't blame her.

Imogen finds out she is a Fire Fae ( all fae are some type of elemental). At the welcome ceremony, Imogen meets an Earth fae who takes Imogen under her wing. She introduces Imogen to Dannika who is Imogen's roommate and comes to be her best friend. Imogen is swept into a world wind of magic classes, and even gets to know the super sweet and attractive Unseelie Prine, Caleb. Unfortunately, she also had to deal with a 3rd year fire user, Erik, who helps her with controlling her fire magic.

here's where it becomes a little unreal. Students are being plagued by a terrible illness at the academy. Everyone tells Imogen to stay out of it, but she decides to pull a Nancy Drew and sleuth around everything even though she knows nothing about the magic realm. She finds these clues and solves mysteries and everyone praises her sleuthing abilities, though clues kinda just fall to her when they shouldn't. I can't in good faith give it more than 2.5 stars in terms of plot, but I still really enjoyed it for whatever reason, so I bumped it up to stars.

Yes, I plan on reading book 2 and 3, and then being angry that I have no idea if the author is planning to finish the series.

Enjoyable story- but many questions

This was an enjoyable story and I do look forward to the next one. I like the heroine. However she seems like the only one with a brain. The teachers are useless and the students are not much better. I just don’t understand why no one knows how to think in the fae realm.

The ending was a bit anti-climatic and have many questions about what is really going on.

That being said- I did enjoy the story and I will read the next book and see what happens next.

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review and this doesn't in any way influence my opinion on it.

A Curse of Fire was so good, it's like a cross between the fae and Harry Potter so you know it was good and that I was going to love it. In this world when the fae (full-blooded and halflings) turn eighteen they go off to magic college. Yes magic college where they learn about the fae history, how to use their magic, and play fae games. They even have houses like in HP, these are elemental fae there is water, earth and of course fire (I don't know if there is an air) so each elemental group gets their own house with dorm rooms and a great common room. I am so happy about this little turn of event you just don't even know.

The beginning situation is a complete mess to tell you the truth. Imogen is from the human realm and is raised by her human mother. They were constantly moving around and then Imogen finds out why. The fae have caught up to them and now it is time for Imogen to go to the fae realm when just moments before she didn't even know the fae existed. Now she is expected to go to another realm, find her way and maybe even find a home.

Imogen is messy and I love it. The girl is completely out of her depth, half of the time she doesn't know what is going on and then these huge bombshells get drops on her but I got to give it to her she doesn't just quit or crawl into a ball and cry it out. Imogen takes the punches and keeps on going, she doesn't give up. She isn't the best with her magic, actually its pretty bad and she may have a slight anger problem however when things go wrong it's Imogen who searches for the truth. She goes on instincts and she doesn't let anyone try to persuade her to drop her search for the truth and I love that but she does go a little far at times and even I gotten wonder what in the h*ll is she doing.

Along side her are the best friends Dannika (fire fae and roommate) and Ella (earth fae). I like the fact that Sophia didn't make this an instant friendships. Ella and Dannika were already friends but not close friends and then Imogen comes along you see them doing things together, being put in situations and then they are surrounded by the mystery that is on campus so you can see the friendship build in these actions. Dannika is a feisty popular girl who has a funny and caring personality kinda like the nice devil on the shoulder while Ella is the good girl who is the angel on the other shoulder, Ella is smart, kind and good-natured.

Imogen might be a mess but there are at least two hot faerie boys who don't mind her messiness so much. There is Caleb the unseelie faerie prince who is beautiful (of course), kind (a little shocking), funny and athletic. The next contender is Erick who I admit seemed like a jerk at first but totally misjudged him. Erick is a hard worker who is responsible and can be kind but he can also put his foot in his mouth and has a huge temper. Who do I pick between the two, hands down its Erick, there is more to Erick than meets the eye, he is nice on the surface but you have to dive deep to see what a really softy he is. As for Caleb, there were some situations when he didn't act well or acted shady and to me something is just off with him.

Sophia Shade has created a beautifully exciting world with the fae. There are dangers, mystery, action and adventure around every corner. A Curse of Fire had my interest from the beginning and I admit I had to put the book down a couple of times because Imogen had gotten herself into a messy situation but I loved the book and the characters. A Curse of Fire ended on kind of a cliffhanger and I can't wait to see what happens in the next book A Curse of Flames.

Imogen has never had a place that she could call home. All her life her mother has moved them from place to place. They use to stay in one place for a while but now they only stay in once place for maybe a couple of months at a time. Imogen has tried talking to her mother about why they were always moving and never staying in one place long but her mother just won’t tell her anything no matter how much she argues. Something or someone is after Imogen’s mother and they want something or someone and that someone is Imogen.

Imogen has a big day planned out and she has been planning this day for a very long time. But her plans have fallen through once again as her mother packs them up and are on the move again. Whoever is after them is hot on their trail today. Imogen finally gets her mother to confess as to who is after them and why. Imogen finds out that she is a fairy and that is who has been chasing them all these years and have finally caught up to them and have given her an ultimatum go with them willing or be forced.

The ultimatum she was given is that she must attend the Fae Academy to learn who she is. Imogen’s mother has always believed this to be a bad place and didn’t want her daughter going there or maybe she is just afraid of losing her daughter.

Imogen decides that she wants to go to this school to learn who she is and where she came from. She is in for a world of trouble when she first walks through the door to the Fae realm and has to make it through dark fae territory.

When she finally makes it to the school there are a lot of students in the nurse’s office who are very ill and on the first day. Later she learns that one of the halls is being attacked. Imogen is on the case when it seems that the staff doesn’t seem to care. If their magic doesn’t fix it then they don’t seem to care but Imogen doesn’t need magic as she has never had or used magic in her life she will just have to do it the human way by snooping.

But Imogen has other fish to fry like dealing with two hot guys that really seems to heat her up in more ways than one. Yeah Imogen has finally found herself a home and have made lots of friends. She also has to contend with not being able to control her element fire. If she doesn’t get that under control she could be putting herself not to mention other people in danger. How is girl to learn how to control fire when she didn’t even know she could make fire? But figure it out she must.

I have really enjoyed reading A Curse of Fire and getting lost in the halls of the Fae Academy with Imogen, Dannika, Ella, Erick, Caleb, Driftblossom, Damon and Lady Shadowburn plus many, many more. This has been an epic journey in the realm of the Fae one in which I hope to rejoin in the near future.

Come join in on this great adventure and walk with Imogen through the halls of the Fae Academy and see what she sees. Sophia Shade is one of those authors who can pull you into a story and have you seeing the world through character/author’s eyes and have you so lost in the story that you actually forget where you are and have you racing through wanting to help Imogen find out whodunit. I can’t wait for the next book to find out more about Imogen and her life as well as all of her new friends and read more about the Fae Academy.

I would recommend A Curse of Fire to anyone who loves a good whodunit with a little magic on the side.

Life at a Fae Academy can be exciting or deadly; it can be a dream, or a nightmare.
When Imogen finds out about her Fae heritage, she has no idea about the stream of events it will launch. Accepted to the Fae Academy, she tries to understand so much while knowing next to nothing - about her fire powers and how to control them, about the Fae community, their opinions and attitude; she tries to understand the relations between the courts and expectations of her as a Fae halfling. But the realizations are not always pleasant, nor are they sufficient to provide enough information to satisfy Imogen's curiosity. Moreover, there is a strange illness spreading out at the school, accompanied by seemingly random attacks on one of the houses. Pursuing her own investigation, her hands are full even without the struggle her 'love life' presents all the time, not speaking of the approaching trials at the end of freshman year..
I very much liked this story. It resembled a bit Alice in Wonderland, only with Fae world and enchanting magic. There is much to Imogen we are yet to discover, but her attitude and wits promise much entertainment - trouble, awkward situations, a tangled mess called romantic interest, amazing powers that are yet to be tamed fully, and solving the mysterious attacks. The story was both dark and funny, suspenseful and light, a fine balance and enjoyable YA read. I was a bit bothered that no one seemed to listen to Imogen, and she was like the only one trying to solve the problems or even thinking ard about it; the rest was more or less passive. However, there are several very interesting characters, including the headmaster, Damon, Erick and Caleb, who made this reading journey interesting and addictive, and their motives were not always clear. One more thing that made me smacking my head was Imogen'd denial or oblivion about her internal feelings - sorry, but I could not find the base for her claims of how perfect Caleb is when we did not see much of his perfection in the story. It felt like it just appeared after the first practice.
I am very much looking forward to the next book in this series to see where the story goes.

I was given a copy of this book by the author.

This is the first book by Sophie Shade and what a book it is.  I really enjoyed these characters.  I reminded me of several other YA series I read that are more vampire in nature than fae.  So Imogene and her mother have been on the run for years.  I mean years!  You can see it in the blurb.

Well time has run out.  Imogene turned 18 and her mother's secrets she's held all her life are now being spilled.  It's no wonder Imogene felt like she wasn't the same as everyone else.  She's a halfling.  Half human half fae.

So there's this school for fae and halflings they attend when they come into their powers usually around 18 years of age.  And so she's been recruited.  It's there she realizes there's more than meets the eye and some funny stuff is happening.

There's also this guy.  Isn't there always?  Well really, there's two of them.  One is a better choice than the other but he's royalty.  As far as she knows, Imogene is a peasant.  That won't mix well.  No idea who her father is - the school does a magical test on her to find out what type of fae she is.  Turns out she's a fire fae.  Oh but the fire she has.  Learning to control it is the biggest problem - or so she thinks.

There's lots of stuff going on in this book. It will keep the pages turning.  I think you'll enjoy reading this one.  It's fast paced, intriguing and a who done it on top of it all a girl struggling to find her rightful place.  Aren't we all?

A Curse of Fire... Amazing Beginning To A New Series

Imogen Roberts has spent her life on the run... Moving every couple of months. Finally, Imogen is going to graduate and then tell her mom about all her choices for college.... But she is awakened the day of graduation to her mother's frantic activities... To move again.

Imogen doesn't even have the chance to let her only friend, Cassie, know that Imogen and her mother are leaving again. In the midst of their latest "trip", Imogen and her mother are confronted by what (or perhaps who) they have been running from for 18 years.

Imogen isn't just a teenage girl; she's a halfling: half human and half faerie. When a halfling (or full blood faerie) turn 18, they are enrolled at Callador, in the Faerie realm, to learn about their Fae heritage and how to develop their Fae skills.

Imogen finds herself in another realm and discovers that she is a fire elemental. Not only that, Imogen finds herself torn between two Fae males; one a prince of the Unseelie court. Before Imogen can sort out her tangled emotions, she is enveloped in a deadly mystery at Callador. Can Imogen and her friends discover the cause of the troubles, or are they doomed to failure?

An amazing read; fast paced and enthralling. Excellent character development, strong plotline with multiple sub plots woven skillfully together into a cohesive whole. Can't wait to read the next book in this series!

This is the first book in a series. Imogen and her mother have been on the run for years, only staying places at most 6 months, and she has no idea why. Until one day while on the run, they finally catch up to her. Imogen is half fae, and she needs to attend a magical academy before her magic manifest itself and hurts someone. Left with no choice, Imogen attends and at first it doesn’t seem so bad. But things are not what they seem, and it’s up to her to dig up the deadly secrets before someone dies. I tend to stay away from YA/NA fiction just because there is so much out there to read and only so much time to do it, even if I am a very fast reader. However, this one seemed interesting, and I dove in. I am so glad I did. This world is interesting and fun, with some great characters thrown in. There is a little bit of romance, a little mystery, and lots of bonding among characters. Where there is a tiny bit of a triangle, it isn’t too bad, and I already have a preference. The mystery wasn’t overwhelming, and I enjoyed the ride getting to the conclusion. Overall, this was a great set-up to an ongoing series that I am really looking forward to reading because I am expecting great things. Highly recommend! Thanks to the author for the e-copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

What an interesting and intriquing book to be sure. This book starts you off in this crazy human world where A girl Imogen and her mother are on the run every 3 months from only god knows what her mom is running from. Not soon after she is thrown into the world of the Fae to go to a 5 year college to learn about her halfling fae powers.

Oh she meets some amazing friend an earth fae and a fire fae. And of course there is the two fire fae boys.Yummy

After reading this book I have to say I spent half of it wanting her to get with Caleb and the second half wnating her to ditch him and get with Erick.

Caleb is a dark fae prince, very suave and sweet and sexy and alluring but you just know this boy has many many dark secrets. Things hes hiding from his girlfriend Imogen. He is the ipitamy of the bad boy you want to trust but know you shouldnt.

Erick is cocky and obnoxiou, full of himself and acts like he knows everything. But he has a sweet side that love his half fae sister in the human world and who is just looking out for Imogen.God I just want her to ditch Caleb and run off with Erick. I know its terrible.

I am excited to see more from this author and in the series following Imagen's story. This book leaves u hanging wanting for more.

This is the 1st book I’ve read and reviewed for Sophia Shade and I loved it. This is the story on Imogen, her mother makes her move from place to place never staying longer than a couple of months but her mother won’t tell her why. They finally get settled in a place but that doesn’t last long because who ever was following them has finally caught up to them, Imogen has had enough and makes her mother tell her what’s going on and she does she tells Imogen that she is a fairy and the people that are after them is the school of the fae and they don’t give Imogen a choice of wether to attend or not. Imogen’s mother doesn’t trust that place but Imogen has no choice but to go. While Imogen is there she solves mysteries and has a couple of admirers to deal with as well. I enjoyed reading this book, the characters and storyline were great and I definitely recommend this book it’s well worth the read.

I loved this book. The more I read the more I wanted to read and even after finishing it I wanted more. From the first page, the characters become friends you can relate to, and care about. Through the story you laugh, struggle, fear the danger, feel the embarrassment and question what is going on right along with them. You will also discover the main character has not only one but two romantic interest.

The author has build a world that is intriguing and full of awe. Many questions are answered along the way, but comments are made throughout the story that bring even more questions to mind about what is going on at the Fae Academy. Everyone has secrets, and trust must be earned, not given lightly. I'm excited to learn more in the following books.

This is the first book I've read by Sophia Shade. "A Curse of Fire" is the first book in the series and I really hope we don't have to wait long for book 2.

I really love this book! The detailed intricacies of the story and the beautifully written world building is so amazing. It's a great new adult fantasy of fae going to college to learn about their history and how to harness their elemental power. I like that the academy is inclusive to full fae as well as halflings and they really drive to the point that all fae must come "home". There's suspense and mystery at the school, fun and funny moments, as well as swoon worthy book boyfriends. A prince in her class and a 3rd year are pining over Imogen, whom I'm a big fan of. She's strong willed and stubborn, but that made her a great problem solver even if she made mistakes along the way. With one mystery solved, there are some that are left unanswered and more questions arise. I can't wait to read the next book! Note: I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Review Copy of this book.

If you read Harry Potter and liked it then this book is for you. This story follows Imogen who finds out that she is fae and goes to the fairy realm to school after high school. Interesting creatures and magic throughout. Lots of action and the world building was fantastic. Loved the characters as they are likeable and fun. Mystery going on throughout the story as Imogen learns more about her new home. The plot had lots of little mysteries that will just keep the pages turning. All in all this book kept me glued to it and I await the next book for the story to continue. Imogen's friends were also well developed as were the professors of this school. What a fantastic start to a new series! Loved it!!

I enjoyed reading this book. If you are a fan of books involving magical schools, then you should definitely check this book out. Imogen finds out she is half fae, and after living out her days constantly on the run with her Mom, finds out she is now being thrust into a new life experience where she is required to attend a magical college.

This book is filled with magical elements, and secrets that seem to hide behind the turn of each page. I would recommend this book to any reader that enjoys reading about the fae and magical worlds.

Great book!

The book story line is great! The only reason i didn't give it a full 5 stars is some of the details in the book are repeated over and over again. Other wise it's well written a little slow at first, but all new book series are usually like that. I wish she didn't go into heavy detail about something and just skim over other important parts. I would recommend this book to someone. If you like Harry Potter and the world Beyond the Veil you will love this book. If your reading this just buy the book lol it's worth the money! Happy reading

I want to start first by saying I absolutely loved the cover of this book, very striking and it definitely drew me in. I admit I struggled at first to get into this book, and I also found it a little difficult at first to connect with the characters but once I got more into it I finally started to enjoy it. The premise of the story is an interesting one and I have to say I do love books about fae. By the end of the book I was left wanting to know more, a sure sign that I will definitely be giving the second book a read!

The Harry Potter of Fae!!!

I really liked this but I love the Fae in general. I loved all the Harry Potter reference in the book and I could see the similarities. For on i can't decide if I hate or like Damon he kinda reminds me of Snape. Imogen is such a smart girl and just relentless everyone when her friends just want to stick there heads in the sand. Go get them girl!!! And Erick gosh sometime you just feeling punching him in the face he is be such a jerk. I can't what so finish the next one and see what else she discovers.

Wow what a fantastic start to a new series! Fae have always been a fascination of mine and I enjoy learning more about them.
This book revolves around one halfling girl who finds herself forced to leave behind the human world and attend a school in the fae world.
I thoroughly enjoyed the characters and loved the fast-pace of the story. I couldn’t put it down!
I can’t wait to discover what happens next.
I voluntarily reviewed an arc from the author.

I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

For 18 years Imogen has been hastily shuffled from place to place. While Imogen is aware she and her mother are on the run, she doesn’t understand why. After an explosive confrontation with their pursuers, it’s revealed that Imogen is half fae. With a fae father and human mother, Imogen is claimed as a new student by the Callador school and whisked away for mandatory training. The new high school graduate is plunged into a world she barely understands to begin a fae college education.

A Curse of Fire, the first in this series, is a Harry Potter-type tale of a young person desperately trying to realize their hidden talents and ultimately fit in. Imogen has a bit of a chip on her shoulder and boldly barrels into situations based on emotion and instinct. She forges some friendships – and some rivalries – along the way. There’s an emerging love triangle that will likely be woven into future series installments. The fae world Shade creates is complex and creative; full of interpersonal and political complications.

Ultimately, however, the book missed the mark for me. I found myself distracted by the awkward timeline and pacing of the book. A lot of the book details are revealed almost haphazardly, as though there wasn’t a solid framework for the story. I found character relationships and dynamics to be shallow and underdeveloped. The book is classified as young adult, so to be fair, it is written for a younger audience. As a first book, I anticipate some of these wrinkles will be ironed out in books to come.

let me just say how much I hated this book, it's terrible, boring , has the word building of a limp noodle and the main character has no interesting quality's, is boring and honestly really annoying and has the maturity of a 10 year old. I usually make it my rule to finish a book all the way through, right to the end because I simply hate having a book half read even if it isn't a great book, I want to finish it simply so it's done. However this book made my self imposed rule seem impossible to uphold and I only ended up finishing it for 2 reasons.
1) I thought surely this book will get better the further I get to the end, surely it will start to get interesting eventually. WRONG!
2) I was waiting for six hours in an airport and had nothing better to do then read this book.
if your looking for funny, romantic, exciting fantasy book with great word building and interesting characters this is most definitely NOT the book for you. I found myself itching to write this review simply in the hope that I save someone's time and hopes and dreams from utter disappointment.

Moving Parts

It took a lot to get into this story. Imogen and her mom's relationship wasn't fully developed enough in the beginning. It's on the surface. The way she explained that she was part Fae seemed unrealistic. The people finding them and then Imogen just deciding to go with the headmistress even though she sensed an evil presence. She arrives in the Fae World and it's overwhelming and confusing for her and us the reading trying to grasp everything. Why would they not guide her into this. It seemed like they didn't actually want her their. Caleb seems to sweet. Their we're so many plots going around that didn't end anywhere. It didn't get truly interesting until like 70% percent of the book was read. Love Erick and the two girls she befriends. Why was the fire mentor such a jerk to her. Just so many loose ends for me. I'm going to try the next book. Because of the vision T the end of this one, but if I can't get into it im walking away.

More like 2 1/2 stars.

This book just didn’t do it for me. While I found the premise somewhat interesting and the first chapter drew me in, I had issues with the rest of the book.

There were too many tropes and cliches in this book to ignore. Girl finding out she’s special, magic school, a kind of arch nemesis bc of a boy, love triangle that adds nothing to the story...

The pacing was also very very quick, meaning that the author didn’t delve into the characters as much as I would have liked. There were also a lot of instances of “a few weeks passed.”

I did really enjoyed the powers part and the different fae. The love triangle just overshadowed it. I’m generally not a fan of love triangles and it made no sense to be that basically the two most important guys at the school would both fall for her, like, ASAP.

I tried... i really did..... but there is no concept of a bloody time scale at all??? One moment she's supposed to be graduating and the next shes suddenly going to a fancy fae school?? where's the bloody time scale????
A few reviews have likened this book to some of the Harry Potter series, which is what lead me to give it a whirl. I stuck in there until around 27% into the book, but i struggled to feel anything positive about Imogen, let alone like her.
Just not my cup of tea i don't think.

Pretty good

It was a pretty good read, but frustrating at times. It is sometimes hard to follow the progression of the characters. The conclusion came really fast. Even though it is obvious that it is a lead into the next book it is hard to drum up the interest to read the next one. The male leads are kind of flat, and Imogene just seems to be unhappy wherever she is. Seeing where the story was going was what kept me reading. The writing was okay. There also weren’t a lot of typos, which I appreciated. Overall rating, okay.
