Reagan Summerside returns in national bestselling author Duffy Brown’s fifth Consignment Shop mystery, now for the first time in hardcover.
There are two social functions in Savannah guaranteed to get people talking: weddings and funerals. And just as consignment shop owner Reagan Summerside agrees to marry the hunky Walker Boone, her neighbors, sisters Annie Fritz and Elsie Abbot, step up their business as professional mourners. They are so successful that the Sleepy Pines Retirement Center has hired them as a part of their retirement package. But the celebration over good business is cut short when the residents at Pines suddenly begin dying at an alarming rate. And the sisters are the first suspects.
Reagan has her doubts, however, and begins to look into the strange phenomenon. But then something even stranger happens: a body winds up in the sisters’ pink Caddy. The evidence begins to pile up and the suspicious case of Willie Fishbine, who swindled the sisters out of a fortune and coincidentally died prior to the Pines case, is reopened.
Not wanting Willie to be buried until they can find the killer responsible for the murders, Reagan must catch the culprit in time to walk down the aisle. Witty, fabulous, and full of charm, Lethal in Old Lace is perfect for fans of Ellery Adams and Jenn McKinlay.
Duffy Brown loves anything with a mystery. While others girls dreamed of dating Brad Pitt, Duffy longed to take Sherlock Holmes to the prom. She has two cats, Spooky and Dr. Watson, her license plate is Sherlok and she conjures up who-done-it stories of her very own for Berkley Prime Crime. Duffy’s national bestselling Consignment Shop Mystery series is set in Savannah and the Cycle Path Mysteries are set on Mackinac Island.
Fans of Duffy Brown’s Consignment Shop Mysteries have waited a long time for “Lethal in Old Lace,” and I’m thrilled to say this story is worth the wait! Easily the most comedic cozy series I know of; protagonist Reagan Summerside, her mother Judge Gloria, her Aunt Kiki, and several of the awesome recurring supporting characters such as Big Joey, Mercedes, and Earlene, are tagged to help Reagan steal a casket with a corpse from the funeral home and hide it. Then, they must track down a mysterious second corpse that’s making rounds about town. What the heck!? The mystery concerns a swindler and Kiki and Gloria go undercover in an assisted living home where drama Southern-style ensues. Aunt Kiki’s serving martini’s on the porch! LOL! I had a suspicion about the culprits; however, the final reveal was certainly surprising.
I love that Walker Boone and Reagan are rapidly moving forward with their relationship. ❤️ Bruce Willis, the rescue pup is as loveable and brave as ever. I highly recommend this book and the entire series!
I reviewed a digital ARC provided by NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books.
Reagan Summerside is back for another fun-filled adventure with her guy, Walker Boone, and her best doggie friend BW (aka Bruce Willis). She’s ecstatic when Walker asks her to marry him, despite all the dead bodies that seem to keep popping up around her.
The latest dead body seems connected to the Sleepy Pines Retirement Center. The prime suspects are her neighbors. Reagan doesn’t believe it and is dtermined to prove their innocence. With the help of her Aunt KiKi, Reagan conducts her own investigation.
As her investigation continues, Reagan is also in the process of planning her upcoming nuptuals. Luckily her mother is more than willing to lend a helpful hand.
This series is always a fun, exciting ride. Reagan and her crew keep you laughing all through the book. This series is filled with charm, laughter, mystery and romance all rolled into one delightful package. Although the books can be read individually, it’s so much more fun when you start at the beginning. It gives you a chance to get close to these wonderful characters. I’m looking forward to the next entry in the series.
FTC Disclosure: I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own.
Lethal in Old Lace is the anxiously awaited, new release in Duffy Brown’s Consignment Shop Mysteries. I'll openly acknowledge that I don't read this series for the intriguing, deep mysteries. This is good think because the mystery woven throughout this book is as implausible as they come. Literally. I could tell you who the murderer was but have forgotten why and how the crime was carried out since I enjoy Ms. Brown’s books for their humor and great, quirky characters and the convoluted mystery plot which, combined, gave overall enjoyment of the book. This series of books is one of my favorite Southern cozy mysteries. Envision the protagonist, Reagan Summerside, her mother Judge Gloria, Aunt Kiki, and a host of supporting cast members such as they strive to steal a casket with a corpse from the funeral home and hide it. Add a swindler, another corpse and an undercover nursing home residency and chaos ensues. The characters will keep you in stitches with their antics and draw you into their lives and families. I love the characters in this series and want Mr. Brown to continue writing about these people forever. The dead bodies keep turning up and Reagan, family and friends continue to solve the cases with their southern charm and humor. The loveable rescue dog, Bruce Willis, makes this cozy complete.
There is so much about Duffy Brown’s books that I love! This is one of her best. And I have read almost all of them. The plot in Lethal in Old Lace is intricate and well woven around familiar and newly added characters. What I love best about her works and what keeps me coming back again and again is the humor! She simply makes me laugh out loud and I see myself caught in the crosshairs of such similar outrageous stumbling antics. I always finish one of her books wishing there was just one more. Laughter, it's said, is the best medicine. And there's lots of evidence that laughter does lots of good things for us. Laughter establishes a sense of connection between people, or in this book, a connection between the written words and the reader. The best laugh is one that brings tears to our eyes and this book will bring tears to your eyes! All of Duffy Brown's books are like visiting entertaining, eccentric, and lovable friends. I would recommend this book (and series) to anyone looking for a nice break from reality and some fun family dynamics and drama! :) I always finish one of her books wishing there was just one more.

The first time I have read this author, the book is # in the series. I had trouble at first as I didn't know the characters. They are well developed and the area's descriptions draw you into the story. The quirks of characters intrigue me and I will read the earlier stories to understand them better. Reagan Sunnysides accepted the offer of marriage to Walker Boone and is planning her marriage a d updating the family home. We have a case of a disappearing corpse. Reagan has seen it is several places before it rests in Aunt Kiki 's garage. The evidence points to her neighbors so Reagan and Aunt Kiki begin to look into the matter. Aunt Kiki goes undercover in a retirement home to learn who the dead person's enemies are. There are funny scenes as the friends attempt to hide their involvement from the police. Walker doesn't like Reagan's actions but is there for her. I recommend this book. Recipes for martinis are included.

I was over the moon when I heard this series had found a new home. This is one of my favorite series and I sure wasn’t done with these wonderful characters.
Something I have been waiting for is moving forward in this book. Boone pops the question and Reagan says yes. They are moving forward in their life together with some major decisions like where they will live and the renovations that may be needed. Due to some crazy circumstances, their wedding party is going to be filled with some people I never suspected. That’s the good news. The bad news is a dead body is found in sisters Annie Fritz and Elsie Abbot garden and another body with casket is hidden in Aunt Kiki’s garage. Both are connected to the Sleepy Pines Retirement Center and the sisters are prime suspects for what could be two murders. Aunt Kiki decides to go undercover in the retirement home to help Reagan solve the case.
Reagan Summerside owns the Prissy Fox Consignment Shop and her neighbors Annie Fritz and Elsie Abbot’s help out at the shop while Reagan is out trying to plan her wedding or catch a killer. Her mother, Judge Gloria and her Aunt Kiki are usually along for both. Her new fiancee Walker Boone does his best to keep all of them out of trouble. With two murders to solve his task is far from easy. I had so much fun following along with their antics. Ms. Brown’s Savannah, Georgia has its hands full with this gang,
Southern charm, snappy dialogue, genuine, unique characters, laugh out loud moments, and a top-notch whodunit grace the pages of Lethal and Old Lace. From the very first word until the last this story completely entertains.
I love the way Duffy Brown writes. Each new story quickly becomes my favorite. It was a bit of a wait for this book, but it was so worth the wait. It surpasses a perfect escape by quite a bit. Yes, this book gets my Paradise Rating. More than 5 stars! Thank you, Duffy Brown, for this marvelous story!
Reagan Summerside and Walker Boone are engaged and they have a wedding to plan. I lived in Savannah for many years. I still go back most weekends to enjoy the enchanting town squares and walk the beautiful beach on Tybee. There isn’t a lovelier place on the east coast for a wedding, as far as I am concerned. There also isn’t a better person to write about weddings, murder and mayhem than the lovely Duffy Brown! There is more than one dead body turning up in this fast-paced story. The mystery will keep you guessing until the end. At the end of this book you will be looking forward to the next installment in the Consignment Shop Mystery series. I was fortunate to receive an advanced reader copy provided to me by the publisher through NetGalley. This did not affect my rating, however. I have provided an unbiased and honest review.
Lethal in Old Lace was a truly wonderful southern cozy mystery. Written by Duffy Brown who I love so much, for me this is the first in the Consignment Shop Series. I have no idea why I have not read any of these until now. Strong, funny and charismatic Southern Characters. So much charm, community and tenacity! This was a fun read, a light and charming book with a good murder mystery and a ton of spunk! This book is out March 13th by Crooked Lane Books and I highly recommend it.
Duffy Brown has written a wonderful continuation to Demise in Denim (indeed the two books could easily be read one after another as they are that seamless!) At the end of the previous book (the aforementioned Demise in Denim) Reagan Summerside and Walker Boone got engaged and that is where this starts, but within a couple of pages Reagan and her Aunt KiKi are off to a funeral, Walker is moving into Reagan's house and it gets madder and more fun from there on in with undercover work by KiKi and Reagan's mother, Reagan's neighbours getting arrested and released (thank you Walker Boone!) and of course the wonderful Bruce Willis is there as well. 5 well deserved stars!
NB - I was lucky enough to be granted an ARC by NetGalley and therefore reviewed before general release!
I received a free book for an honest opinion. Another adventure for Reagan is about to take place. She thinks accepting Boone's marriage proposal is exciting enough but she hasn't idea what else is in store for her. On that same evening she stumbles onto body of an old lady. When she returns with the help, the body is gone! And then, it happens again. Trying to keep it all hush hush from Boone, she enlists Kiki's help to try and figure out what in the heck is going on, but that only leads to more twist and turns and they as always get into even more trouble. Trying to keep Sisters out of jail and clear their name, checking out happenings in retirement home, making sure to send deceased to his final resting place with a Snickers bar, these ladies have their hands full. This series has it all, southern charm, quirky characters, lots of humor and of course a well written and presented mystery. I am delighted with this series and if I could write this is what I would write.
I adore this entire series. It gets better with every book, and LETHAL IN OLD LACE is no exception. Author Duffy Brown continues to entertain, and hold me captive. She also can spin a mystery that leaves me guessing until the reveal. I've looking forward to the next installment!
I've missed this series and I am so happy to have a new installment. Opening a Consignment Shop mystery by Duffy Brown is guaranteed to bring a smile to your face, brighten your day and keep you entertained. This series, in my opinion, has some of the best characters in the cozy mystery genre. The characters are all well written, have depth, wit and humor. The mystery is well crafted with plenty of suspects to choose from as well as twists and turns that will keep you guessing. If you are a fan of this author and/or series, don't miss this book. You will not be disappointed.
I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy provided to me by the publisher through Netgalley. It is set for release on March 13, 2018.
Reagan Summerside should be planning her wedding to hunky lawyer Walker Boone but a plethora of dead bodies get in her way. She and her intrepid Aunt KiKi along with Bruce Willis her wonderful rescue dog are on the case.
It starts at Willie Fishbine's funeral which is poorly attended. Reagan's neighbors Annie Fritz and Elsie are worried about their new business as professional mourners. They need the money because they were sucked into Willie's miracle vitamin scheme which turned out to make money only for Willie.
When a second body - Bonnie Sue's -- is found in their pink Caddy, things look even worse for the sisters. But they aren't the only ones who got sucked into Willie's money-making scheme. Reagan and Aunt KiKi find lots of suspects when they start investigating the Sleepy Pines Retirement Center.
This book was filled with Southern humor from the Southern Belle who is shopping for wedding gowns and booking wedding venues long before her desired fiance has proposed. Given that he is dating a couple of other women and in cahoots with Reagan's ex-husband in attempting to buy Sleepy Pines, he looks like a good suspect for the murders but an unlikely fiance for the Belle. But then there are a number of people at Sleepy Pines who bought into the vitamin scheme and wanted Willie dead.
This book was filled with great characters and was very funny. I loved the way Walker accepted all of Reagan's crazy actions. She and her companions get into all sorts of situations that were played for humor. Who steals a corpse in a coffin and hides it in a car to give themselves time to find the killer? Who keeps moving a corpse around?
I loved this story and am eager to go back and read the previous books in this series.
I liked this story set in Savannah Georgia. The MCs were fun, and the story was engaging. I read this book as the first book in the series, and I think I would have done better to start at #1. Sometimes series are best read in order as the MCs develop background stories. I thought Reagan was a good amateur sleuth and might try reading the first book in the series if I can find it, and see if I like that one more.
Lethal in Old Lace is a humorous mystery. A body keeps getting moved while the police are looking for him. A second body is buried in the garden and then moved as well. The reader must stay alert to follow the bodies. I found the book to be interesting, creative and challenging, although enjoyable.
Lethal in Old Lace is a delightful romp with the very genteel ladies of Savannah. Georgia has peaches, charm, magnolias, and – ta-da! Reagan Summerside! And her very dignified mother, Judge Gloria Summerside, and Gloria’s delightful sister, Reagan’s Auntie Kiki. These ladies are enough to put Savannah, Georgia on the map all by themselves.
Reagan owns the Prissy Fox Consignment Shop on the first floor of her aging Victorian, Cherry House. It was the only thing she from her divorce from the cheating ex. Well, that and his divorce attorney, Walker Boone, and they are dearly looking forward to getting married. Reagan lives on the second floor since the first is where she tries to make enough to pay bills every month. Her dearest Aunt Kiki lives next door with Uncle Putter. Kiki teaches all the girls how to dance for their cotillion. Some of the guys, too! Kiki is Reagan’s partner in crime (solving). Where Reagan goes, dead bodies just show up. She finds the killer, whatever it takes, and Kiki is always up for an adventure.
People at Sleepy Pines Retirement Home are dying unexpectedly. Yes, it is a retirement home, but rumors are everywhere. Reagan gets dragged into first one, then another death. The first is a man who wasn’t very lovable, or loved, except by his grandson. He has reasons to bribe Reagan to into finding who killed the guy, thanks to Kiki’s need for chocolate. The second is a woman whose body was first seen in the back seat of the Abbott sisters’ Cadillac, then in the window display at ... the Prissy Fox? When Aldeen, a police detective, is chatting with Reagan, her dog BW brings a dirty blue hat and a red purse, both belonging to a missing woman. As BW happily trots to the Abbott sisters’ back yard, they found a woman’s hand sticking up from the garden. Gaa!
Now Kiki is staying at Sleepy Pines to find the culprit, then Gloria joins her to “help her sister” with dressing and other tasks. There is a full complement of laugh-out-loud scenes that give serious competition to Lucy and Ethel’s zaniest stunts, as well as very frightening moments. All this, and a wedding to plan…so many interruptions, so little time!
I love Auntie Kiki and Reagan! They are loyal, fun, imaginative, and brave. The Abbott Sisters are also amusing, although I didn’t believe the story of why they buried the poor lady’s body. Only a man like Walker could love Reagan for who she is and not try to change her; the author has designed these characters with such care!
There are interesting plot twists that maximize either sadness, hilarity, or fear. There are times that I think, where does the author come up with these things? I guess I don’t care if she continues to dream them up! The author allows us as readers to lighten up and not take ourselves so seriously. It turns out there is no shortage of suspects for either senior, sadly. Or are there two killers on board? The real killer(s) I considered on and off throughout, even though some of the others looked so much more culpable. No spoilers – suffice it to say that there are no loose ends at the end of the novel except…when will we see Reagan walk down the aisle? I highly recommend this novel to those who like their mysteries cozy, their Southerners charming, and their mysteries complex.
From a grateful heart: I received a copy of this from the author and NetGalley, and here is my honest review.
Funny, fast reading and extremely enjoyable. I really liked this cozy mystery and, even if I didn't read the previous book in this series, I had no problems in understanding the characters and the relationships amongst them. Thanks to netgalley and Crooked Lane Books for giving me the chance to read and review this book
Lethal in Old Lace (Consignment Shop Mystery #5) by Duffy Brown is one of the funniest in the series yet.
When Reagan accepts the proposal of Boone, her mom and Aunt Kiki are ecstatic! Planning a wedding in Savannah is one of the most exciting things for these ladies and there will be no expense to big for their girl. For all of us that are familiar with the series, we know there is a lot more to this story than wedding cake, wedding gowns, champagne and the bride and groom. We cannot forget murder, mayhem, crazy antics and of course BW. When Kiki goes undercover, these southern belles will make you laugh and snort with their crazy schemes.
The story is well written, interesting and just plain old fun. Fans of this series will not be disappointed.
I voluntarily read an ARC of this book provided by the publisher and NetGalley.
Lethal in Old Lace by Duffy Brown is the fifth book in A Consignment Shop Mystery series. Reagan Summerside is stunned and thrilled when Walker Boone proposes to her. She barely gets to enjoy the moment when Aunt Kiki disrupts them. Elsie and Annie Fritz Abbot are lacking mourners at Willie Fishbine’s wake (if you knew him, you would not mourn him either). The Abbot sisters are professional mourners and need every cent of their income since they lost their savings in a get rich quick scheme. The next day, Reagan and Aunt Kiki get a visit from Fishbine’s grandson. He witnessed Aunt Kiki stealing a candy bar from his grandfather’s coffin. He wants it replaced and for them to find out who killed Mr. Fishbine. The death was ruled accidental, but the young man has a different theory. Then BW (Reagan’s dog) finds a body partially buried in the Abbot sister’s vegetable garden. Bonnie Sue and Willie Fishbine were both residents of Sleepy Pines Retirement Center. Is someone killing off the residents? With the Abbot sister’s the primary suspects in one of the crimes, it is up to Reagan and Aunt Kiki to get answers.
A Consignment Shop Mystery series is best read in order. I am happy that Regan and Boone are engaged. I just hope Regan gets the wedding she desires (her mother has gone into overdrive). The book contains good writing and a fast pace. The characters are established (well developed), and I just love the setting of Savannah. Duffy Brown provides beautiful descriptions of the area. There are several characters with various quirky traits like Aunt Kiki. Boone is a saint to put up with Regan and her family (he is a nice balance to Reagan). Reagan and Aunt Kiki remind me of Lucy and Ethel in I Love Lucy (screwball comedy). The mystery will lead readers on a merry chase. I do wish there had been a little less action. There needed to be some calm moments in between the frenetic ones. Lethal in Old Lace was different from Iced Chiffon (first book in the series). The author seemed to have ramped up the zany antics and quirk factor in Lethal in Old Lace. I loved the reference to Gilmore Girls in the book (my favorite show). There are various martini recipes included. Lethal in Old Lace is an entertaining cozy mystery that will have readers in stitches and perplexed over the killers’ identity.
This book was absolutely hilarious! There were so many fun moments and laugh out loud happenings from a chick food fight to an old guy fight at a funeral viewing. Of course Aunt Kiki was right in the thick of things as always and helping in a fairly major way with this investigation. I loved that Reagan's mom, the judge, got in on some of the snooping fun this time. I had only read the first in this series but just couldn't resist reading ahead since it was no secret that Reagan and Boone would be getting married, something I started wishing for in the first book.
The book starts up right on the heels of the previous book. Reagan said yes and practically promised Boone she'd never pay attention to another dead body again. The only problem was that there was a body in the Fritz sisters' car and Reagan certainly didn't want them to go to jail for something they didn't do. A whole comedy of errors follows, one funny situation after the other which leads to a pretty awesome conclusion where BW, Reagan and Boone's rescue dog, gets to be a hero.
I didn't guess the killer very early, but I did have suspicions all along about that person.
There was a little side mystery concerning Uncle Putter meeting with Boone over some legal matters but it seems like that might be an ongoing future small plot since nothing was explained about it. I loved the whole wedding planning craziness. One minute they didn't want a big wedding, next minute there was one being planned. A super fun roller coaster ride that you won't want to miss! I probably should get caught up on the rest of the series before the next book comes out but I'm so anxious for that to happen too.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance e-copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher.
In author Duffy Brown's long awaited Lethal in Old Lace, wedding bells are preparing to ring in Savannah as Reagan Summerside and her fiancé Walker Boone are basking in their engagement and preparing to move in together. Unfortunately for them, senior citizens are dropping like flies at the Sleepy Pines Retirement Home, and Reagan's next door neighbors Elsie and Annie Fritz are suspects numbers one and two after the police discover a dead body buried in their garden. Add to this the fact that Uncle Putter has Auntie KiKi on a health kick which has caused her to resort to Snickers swapping at a very inopportune moment leading Reagan and KiKi to hide another body (avec casket!) in the trunk of Auntie KiKi's batmobile. To solve the mystery and clear their friends, Reagan and KiKi promise just about everyone they know in Savannah a part in the wedding, leading to more comic relief as Reagan's planned small and intimate wedding is turned into one of Scarlett O'Hara proportions! Another hilarious romp through the very charming southern city of Savannah, and highly recommended to all lovers of author Duffy Brown's Consignment Shop mystery series (also to those of her Bicycle Path mystery series who haven't discovered Reagan and the gang yet). Absolutely loved it and I sure hope there's a follow up in the series! Martini recipes included - an absolute must for Auntie KiKi followers! A+++
Lethal in Old Lace by Duffy Brown was the best one yet in this series! Ms. Brown has written a fast paced plot with twists, turns, food, humor (laugh out loud moments), and all of the quirky characters that I love.
Reagan is floating on air as she has accepted Walker Boone's proposal and is now faced with planning her wedding with the help of her mama and aunt Kiki. On her way to Boone's house to talk about their new life together she finds a dead body in the back of the Sisters caddy. This could only happen to Reagan. From there it all goes into overdrive for this ride to keep the Sisters out of jail. Two murders, body theft, Hollis the Horrible, a retirement home with some fractious characters and a reveal that left me stunned. I could not put this book down and kept turning the pages until I finished the book. I want the next book in this series NOW!
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book from Crooked Lane Books via NetGalley. All of the above opinions are my own. I would like to sincerely thank Crooked Lane Books for allowing me to read and review this book.
This is my first experience with this author and the fifth in her series, and I thoroughly enjoyed, even when the plot took on high jinks in fully suspended disbelief. Who doesn't love the aura and history of beautiful Savannah? Then throw in a unique consignment store owner who lives in her old family home and a fresh proposal of marriage and you have Duffy Brown's delightful new cozy.
What a cast of characters in this book! Reagan Summerside is apparently no newcomer to finding bodies. Her Auntie Kiki adds to the fun, sparking the mischievous Reagan into action and with gorgeous over-the-top accommodating fiancé Walker Boone, Esquire, you definitely have a recipe for some southern comfort entertainment.
You'll love Bruce Willis, her rescue, and neighbors Annie Fritz and Elsie Abbot, sisters who help with the shop. (Accommodating maybe, but not too bright.) They have been hired at Sleepy Pines Retirement Center to welcome new retirees to the home. Unfortunately, one of the residents, Willie Fishbine turned up dead after swindling a number of people out of their retirement funds in a miracle vitamin scheme that includes the sisters, and it doesn't look good for them when Reagan discovers a second deceased resident in their pink Caddy. After the body disappears, she quickly pulls in Auntie Kiki for help. Aunt Kiki conspires with her to go undercover at Sleepy Pines as Reagan begins her investigation outside, while juggling her mother's plans for her wedding and Boone who is moving into her home.
I loved the dialogue and wacky scenes with Aunt Kiki and Reagan is a chip off the ole auntie block. These characters are fleshed out well enough to hear that southern twang and I enjoyed the tidbits of city history. As the plot heats up, Boone is pulled in. Exchanges between Reagan and the bus driver are hilarious.
There is no chance for a reader to get bored, there is always something amusing happening. And, bonus!! Aunt Kiki's martini recipes at the end of the book! I was given this download by Crooked Lane Books and NetGalley and greatly appreciated the opportunity to read and review. I can happily recommend to any who enjoy a cozy mystery book brimming with off-beat characters, beautiful, old southern locale, and just a smidgen of romance. 4.5 stars See my full review https://rosepointpublishing.com/2018/...

Series: A Consignment Shop Mystery Author: Duffy Brown Genre: Cozy mystery/Business Publisher: Crooked Lane Books - Publishing Date: March 13, 2018
Lethal in Old Lace is a fun, intriguing, and easy-to-read book that will give the reader hours of enjoyment. Duffy Brown has woven a story that is seamless from start to finish. There is never a dull moment or a lack of action. This is book six in this series.
The character of Reagan is an entertaining person; she has a way of getting to the point without being too pushy. Her life is changing for the better, but she still keeps finding bodies. This time nothing has changed, innocently walking home, she once again stumbles onto a dead body and leaps into an investigation. Even though she swears she isn’t interested and doesn’t want to get mixed up in a murder investigation, she puts herself in the thick of it.
Other supporting characters including Reagan's hunky fiancé, Walker Boone, are well developed and an intricate part of the story. They are highly entertaining, massively likable and seem almost real to the point the reader can find traces of them in their own family and neighbors. If the reader has not read any of the other books in the series, it may take them a while to figure out what roles each of the characters play and who they are. However, this will not subtract from the enjoyment of the book.
Savannah is a great setting for this series. Having visited this beautiful city, it is easy to know exactly where Reagan is throughout the story and what she sees without the need for too much detail. If the reader hasn’t visited Savannah, they will want to spend time seeing all the sites after reading this book and the others in the series. The city is a living history museum and filled with intelligent residents dripping with southern charm.
Overall, Lethal in Old Lace is a fast-paced, highly enjoyable book that at times makes the reader laugh out loud. The clues are subtle but easily understood. When the murderer is unmasked, most reader will be surprised and delighted. This book and the series is recommended to anyone who enjoys a bit of romance, humor, and suspense all rolled into the same story without unnecessary detail or distraction.
Fans of the Consignment Shop series by Duffy Brown are sure to be pleased that the series is continuing with a new publisher (Crooked Lane), and that the wait for a new adventure featuring Reagan Summerside and crew is finally over.
Reagan and her beau Walker are engaged! Reagan is the owner of a consignment shop, and her neighbors Annie and Elsie often help her out. When bodies of residents from Sleepy Pines Retirement Canter start popping up, Annie and Elsie become the prime suspects. Reagan, though she is busy planning her wedding, must clear the names of her friends and, with the help of her Aunt Kiki and mother Gloria, catch the real murderer while hilarity ensues.
Author Duffy Brown has a knack for creating fun, witty characters. The Savannah, Georgia, setting is delightful, and the story drips with Southern charm and atmosphere. The mystery is well crafted with plenty of suspects and twists and turns.
If you enjoy plenty of hijinks and comedic dialogue in your cozy mysteries, LETHAL IN OLD LACE is sure to fit the bill. I look forward to many more adventures with Reagan. Recommended for any cozy mystery fan.
I received a copy of this title from the author through NetGalley and voluntarily shared my thoughts here.
Reagan is a consignment shop owner and has just agreed to marry Walker, while her neighbors have a professional mourners business. Sleepy Pines has hired them to mourn at funerals. Sleepy Pines is having a rash of deaths and they are being blamed for stepping up the rate of death. Reagan doesn’t think they did it and starts to look into it. Willie is found in Regan’s sister’s car and that really points to her neighbors since Willie had swindled them out of their money. They don’t want Willie buried until they find out who did it and Reagan wants it all cleared up before she gets married.
Before I start, I would like to give a minor warning - do not read the series out of order. This book appears to pick up immediately after book four, and has many references to it. Ok, on to the actual review. I absolutely love the quirky cast of characters. They are amazing and manage to feel real. The mystery was well written and nicely paced.
For those waiting for Duffy Brown's next book in the Consignment series, you will not be disappointed. For those who haven't started, you will love this book I don't think you will have any problem reading this as a stand alone but I suggest that you start with the beginning, just to get the history of these characters. While at a funeral for an elderly customer of a retirement home, Reagan finds another body in her neighbors, Elsie and Annie's, caddy, who also work at the same retirement home. Knowing that the sisters have nothing to do with murder, Reagan and family begin to investigate to clear their names. Add planning for her wedding, Aunt Kiki getting into the middle of the investigation plus her mother, Reagan has her hands full. I love these characters, so many crazy things happen around them and I think what makes it funnier is Walker Boone who is Reagan's fiancé takes it all in stride like it is all normal. No matter what Reagan says to him, he doesn't bat an eye. He supports her whole heartedly and accepts her for who she is. If you are looking for a good laugh, which Ms. Brown never fails to deliver, in with your mystery, then this is the book for you. I eagerly await the next in this series.
*I was lucky enough to have received an early copy of this book and this is my honest opinion.
I happened upon this book on the NetGalley site. I wasn't familiar with the author but it appealed to me because it takes place in Savannah. Once I started the book, I didn't want to put it down!
Reagan Summerside is a girl just making ends meet at her consignment shop. When her neighbors, Annie and Elsie, are accused of murder, Reagan and her Aunt KiKi get involved. The sleuthing starts at the Sleepy Pines Retirement Center. Two of the residents of Sleepy Pines were murdered. Reagan and KiKi with the help of her fiance and Mamma (the judge), figure out who the murder/murderers are, without going to jail!
This book is filled with tongue and cheek humor! I plan on buying the previous 4 in this series! #onlyinthesouth
Reagan and Walker are engaged. Their wedding needs to be planned in the charming southern town of Savannah. Walker has finally been cleared of murder, but now the seniors in Sleepy Pines Retirement Home are dying. Elsie and Annie Fritz are the prime suspects when the police find a body buried in their garden. Funny, laugh out loud, twists and turns that kept me wanting to turn the pages in this wonderfully written book by Duffy Brown.
Thank you NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books for the opportunity to read this book.
