Biting Love #4

Biting Me Softly

Rate this book

Logan is muscular, graceful, and deadly. A gift of pure sex appeal wrapped with a golden bow. I already don’t trust men and Logan’s arrival at my Blood Center may put me out of a job. None of that seems to matter when his smile stuns me, his kisses crank me to broil, and his bites rocket me to heaven (fangy bites, which, if I weren’t grounded in science, would make me think ampire-Vay).

One thing’s for sure—Logan’s got secrets. Troubles with a long-lost household, a mysterious enemy going by the corny vampire name Lord Ruthven and an even more mysterious ally with a voice like a dark cave called the Ancient One. Between my past and all those secrets I can’t trust Logan, no matter how many times he says “Liese, I love you”—but if I don’t trust him, it may cost me my life.

Each book in the Biting Love series is a standalone story that can be enjoyed in any order.

I love Ms. Hughes quirky style and hot love scenes. The supporting cast was pure perfection. In spite of all this, I felt this book was a fair continuation of the Biting Nixie series.

The problem for me was Liese. She got on my last nerve. None of the other heroines plucked my nerves as much as this one did. I enjoyed her character through most of the book then I realized I was wishing the book was not first person. I started to not want to see the scenes through her eyes. That was a bad sign. I thought Logan deserved better too.

I don't do well with cliffhangers in general and this one did not have one, per se. More like, some important questions where not answered. Like -- who is Zinna and who's the daddy of her kids???? These nuggets were not worth carrying over to a future book. This book made me realize that writers who present their stories in first person take a major risk that the reader will hate the narrator. Especially when the main character wants to know something and has several opportunities to ask but then just doesn't. Like where the hell did Zinna and those kids come from? Whew...

I still love the series and Ms. Hughes. I will read the next one but won't be in a hurry to do so.

This is the first 5 star book I have read in awhile. The one liners were fabulous, and mentioning the "sex fairy" in the first sentance of the book? ..... Ms. Hughes you had me at hello.

We get smacked in the face with the overpowering sexy that is Logan Steel. And I think that immediate heat and attraction between Logan and Leise...just showed how much of a gonner Leise was right from the start. And anyone who says that physical attraction/animal lust, can't hit a person that hard....well they haven't had a long dry spell followed up by a sexy, smart, well hung vampire.

There was just enough tension and back story...which I won't go into so as not to spoil it...that I could not tear myself away from this book. I read it all in less than 24 hours, and spent equal time laughing myself silly (seriously she worked in a cowbell reference?), and fanning myself while unconsciously crossing and uncrossing my legs.

If you are a fan of authors like Shelly Laurenston, Katie MacAllister, and Victoria Dahl...you must read this book...well this whole series really, but of the Biting Love novels this one is by far my favorite.

I downloaded the new one ( Biting Me Softly) last night as when one of those e-mail services reminded me it was out. Must say, squishie in first few pages. Nice updates on Elana and Nixie. I am trying to savor the book instead of read it all in one whack. Don't think I have giggled as much at a book since "Biting Nixie". I needed this. Check out the trailer.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_EAwz_...

I reluctantly finished the book as I didn't want it to end. I loved it. It's nice to read a book where the heroine is quirky, has a couple extra pounds and runs to the hero's aid instead of whining. The hero (Logan) loves that she is smart, quirky and likes to take charge at least part of the time. They both have issues and know they have to work on trusting others and themselves. This book has TONS of silly puns but that seems true to life to me since geeks and geekettes I know all pun and/or have their own sense of humor. If you are someone with a low tolerance for that kind of humor, this book may not be for you.

Biting Me Softly is book four in interconnected standalone, which means I was able to enjoy this story without knowing previous books. You can see characters from other books so that would be nice to know them, but it's not necessary - so if you don't have time for others just dive in!
Liese is a person that can be called a geek, and like in that manner she's living her own life. You know the drill. Add to it helping your mother and dealing with the aftershock of a really nasty break up. It's something that would thru earth standing person out of balance - and now it can be so troublesome in that case.
Logan is the CEO of the firm that specializes in security just like Liese, he's hot, brooding, and intriguing to the core. Add to it that he's a vampire and wants Liese so much! I was in the mood for paranormal and his character delivered what I wanted.
Our heroine has big issues are big and as far as I like dealing with that, the number of bad decisions on Liese account was getting strange, but she was trying and getting there. This was what I liked. If you like PNR stories with some issues, and sexy times I think you will enjoy biting me softly, I have high hopes for the next books, as this one is on the 'ok' shelf.

The man liked to pacify his woman, “of course, sweetheart,” he crooned. “I’m the nastiest male there is. It’s my fault, all of it. Shh, Liese, I’ve got you.” I liked this book, I liked Logan.

Too much fluff and not enough plot

I really enjoyed Biting Nixie, also by Mary Hughes. Laugh out loud funny, it had appealing characters and a sexy romance. While sometimes silly, she managed to balance it with a quick moving, interesting storyline. Disappointingly, that was not the case with the follow up novel Biting Me Softly. This book did not hold my interest and after putting it down to read some other books, I had to force myself to go back and finish it.

While it was frequently funny, it crossed over to being annoyingly silly at times. I also didn't buy the romance. There wasn't enough development of the relationship nor did I see why Logan would fall for Liese. There also wasn't an interesting storyline to offset the silliness and lackluster romance. All in all, not one of the better paranormal romances.

If you want to try this author, I really did like Biting Nixie so give that one a try. If you are looking for humorous, light paranormal romances, check out Shelly Laurenston's Pride Stories, Erin McCarthy's Vegas Vampires, Lynsay Sands' Argeneau series, Kerrelyn Sparks' Love at Stake, and Katie MacAllister's Aisley Grey Guardian series.

Admittedly, I dove in here, so these can clearly be read as a standalone. That being said, there are some overlapping characters that would help in knowing, or at least make you happy to "check in" with them.

Liese is a geeky girl, making her own way while supporting her mother and recovering from an epically bad relationship. She's shocked to discover that history can indeed repeat itself when the blood bank she works for hired an automation specialist to install a super fancy computer that can essentially replace her. Desperate and scared, when hottie CEO of this firm ends up hitting on her, she goes into instant survival mode. He persists and, well, there's paranormals all over the place in this town!

In general, the larger story revolves around territorial disputes over blood between vampires. There's good vampires, bad vampires, and some people that are somewhere in between. Liese, however, handles vampires a lot easier than she does guys who are genuinely interested in her. Her trust issues are *massive* and take a lot of hand holding to overcome. Do we get there? Sure! But it takes a lot of bad decisions along the way that had me cringing and dreading the next turn of the page. Like I said, though, we get to a good happy ending, and there's lots of smutty goodness on the way.

What really put me off this book in the end was the criminal stupidity of the main character. Catapulted her completely out of the likable category. How can we be expected to like someone who isn't smart enough to realise that 'Race Gillete' is an alias for Razor? For like, most of the book. Was so bad I almost quit reading a third of the way through, but forced myself, mostly by skimming though.

Another off putting factor is the cheesy villains with the stupid names. Seriously. Minions called Shiv, Skiver, Scythe, Cutter and Razor? Did the author get bored with creativity and just raid a thesaurus?

Trust

Everything boils down to trust. You can’t trust anyone unless you trust yourself. Liese has decided never to trust a male again. The last one has nearly destroyed her. She meets Logan and her body and heart tries to betray her. Logan is being pressured to create a new household, but doesn’t trust himself to be able to protect it. Can they learn to trust from each other? Can they find ever after? Will a lunatic gang leader destroy everything? Come find out in this humor filled story with bad puns. Oh and don’t forget the panty melting hot sex.

Biting Me Softly by Mary Hughes is a good read. I am a fan of this series and this was a good addition to it. I loved Logan. He is a hot, sexy alpha vampire with a sense of humor and a tender side. I have to say I liked but did not love Liese. To me she came across as too neurotic and I found her personality kind of grating. Other than that the book was well written and fun. A good book and a great series that I highly recommend.

On the edge of my seat!!

The author kept me on the edge of my seat for the entire book. It was so captivating that I read it from beginning to end in one sitting. I am very much looking forward to reading the other books in the series.

~* 3.5 Stars *~
If you like your paranormal romances with a serious plot full of serious characters, Mary Hughes' Biting Love series isn't for you, but there are lots of paranormal romances out there that are better suited to that tone. If, however, you enjoy a book that doesn't take itself any more seriously than you should take it, then Mary Hughes is right up there with Shelly Laurenston (with her Magnus Pack series and Pride series in particular) for laugh-out-loud humor and sexy, erotic loving in paranormal romance. True, I think the Laurenston books feature characters that are better developed and plots that are more compact and tightly written, but Hughes has her good points, too. No one does quirky lead characters like Hughes, that's for sure.

Biting Me Softly is no different. Liese Schmetterling is a self-professed geek with trust issues a mile wide. She works for Meiers Corners' Blood Bank doing just about everything, including manning the front desk and keeping track of inventory. Logan Steel, CEO of Steel Security and a character we met in Biting Nixie, is in Meiers Corners for a couple of reasons...none of which include drooling all over the reluctant and doubting Liese, and yet...

While Liese can't help but melt under the supersexilitious power of Lord Logan, she doesn't trust him as far as she can throw him, and for all his shizzle, as long as she wears the glass mockery of an engagement ring her dud ex-fiance gave her, she'll keep her heart - if not her body - firmly to herself. Just...what's with Logan's fangs and red eyes??

As always, Hughes makes me laugh. Her characters make me laugh. And pant. There's no doubt Liese is a bit whacky, especially when she's having serious arguments with Good Liese and Bad Liese, the shoulder angel and demon that pull her this way and that at every decision. She's also insecure and unlike Hughes' other female leads, utterly unconvinced of her own worth. She's the first one to tell you she'll fight to the death for others but won't say boo for herself. That's a problem for this book because it's long, and it's all in Liese's first person POV. After a while, her rabid insecurity and unwavering belief in her lack of appeal started to drag the story down and I wish there'd been more of an external conflict as a driving force of plot in this book instead of the biggest conflict being Liese's own trust issues.

Also, I felt Biting Me Softly was a bit more like the first book in the series, Bite My Fire than the second book, Biting Nixie, in a few unfortunate ways. Like Bite My Fire, the male lead character was almost negligently defined. Where I got a real sense of Julian from Biting Nixie, all I was able to really understand about Logan's character was that he had an issue in his past that hurt him, and he was wildly, insanely hot for Liese. Excellent for her...not so great for a reader, because his character was very two dimensional. And again like Bite My Fire, which I didn't like nearly as much as Biting Nixie, the end of the book lept to a romantic conclusion that hadn't been sufficiently developed through the book. Lust is not love - it's hot, it's fun, and it's delicious when it's Logan-shaped, but it's really not undying love and I think that Hughes too often gives us nothing but one for a whole book, then tries to push the other onto us too precipitously and with no true development. If Hughes can find a better balance there, and develop both her lead characters and her plot a little bit more, she can be as entertaining as Laurenston is for me. She's just not quite there yet. Still, I enjoyed Biting Me Softly, and appreciate the absolute quirky fun of Meiers Corners, all of its inhabitants, and the vampire mythos created for and around it.

Liese Schmetterling is a human computer geek with trust issues and a scarred heart. Logan Steel is an almost four hundred-year-old vampire with rock hard abs and a deep-seated need to protect. The two have nothing in common…except for amazing tech skills, frequent use of puns, red-hot desire for one another…

Okay, Liese and Logan actually have a lot in common, but when Logan walks into Meiers Corners’ Blood Center, all Liese can think of is another job slipping through her fingers. Despite Logan’s assurances otherwise, past experiences have shown Liese than men can and will lie, cheat, and steal from her.

Logan has come to Meiers Corners to protect the Blood Center from rogue vampires who are out to take control of the blood. With all that’s on his plate – vampire politics, personal responsibilities, and an old nemesis crossing his path once again – Logan can’t afford to be distracted. Yet he can’t ignore Liese, or the heady mixture of lust and love she inspires in him. When his enemy targets Liese, it’s not hard to convince Liese to trust him with her life. The challenge will be getting her to trust him with her heart.

Mary Hughes proves that smart can be sexy in the wickedly delicious Biting Me Softly . Logan is to-die-for (no pun intended). He’s mouth-wateringly gorgeous, highly intelligent, fiercely protective, and incredibly giving. In other words, he’s the kind of hero that makes me want to write Ms. Hughes and ask if she can make him somehow appear on my doorstep (though admittedly, I’ve had this urge regarding every hero of Ms. Hughes’s so far). One would think as the object of so delicious a hero’s desires I’d be somewhat jealous of Liese (however irrational that might be). Not so. Liese is the perfect match for Logan. She’s brilliant, but also quirky and, though pretty, isn’t drop-dead gorgeous.

Biting Me Softly shines the brightest during the action sequences – both of the erotic and violent variety. Ms. Hughes knows how to heat up the page in a variety of ways and it’s easy to be swept away in the maelstrom. If there was one thing I would wish for, however, it would be for fewer pop culture references. With so many of them being used to make a point, I was pulled out of the story and it made me wonder, if I picked up the book again a few years from now, would the book have the same impact when the references were not as relevant? I also continue to worry over the issue of having human heroines and immortal heroes, given there is no indication as of yet that the heroines’ life spans will change. Still, even with those minor complaints, I thoroughly enjoyed Biting Me Softly . It’s a solid installment in Ms. Hughes’s fantastic Biting Love series and it made me yearn to read what happens next. Unfortunately, it also made me highly impatient for more characters to get their happily ever after (read: Luke).

Love, laughter, and lust wound together in a wonderfully-written story makes for the ultimate reading experience. Every book in the Biting Love series has all of these things, including Biting Me Softly . I adored Logan and Liese, both separately and as a pair. I finished Biting Me Softly a well-satisfied reader and I cannot wait for the next Biting Love novel.

He’s a candy box of sex appeal wrapped with a golden bow. She’s on a diet.

Blood, sex, violence. Blood, okay, but computer geek Liese Schmetterling had enough S&V when her cheating ex fired her. Now security expert—and lip-smacking gorgeous—Logan Steel saunters into her Blood Center, setting fire to her libido. And threatening her job.

Visions of pink slips dancing in her head, Liese tries to push Logan away without touching his jutting pecs…or ridged abs. Or petting the Vesuvius in his jeans. He’s hiding something, but it doesn’t seem to matter when his smiles stun her, his kisses crank her to broiling and his bites rocket her to heaven. Fangy bites which, if she weren’t grounded in science, would make her think ampire-Vay.

Centuries old and tragedy-scarred, Logan’s mission is to fortify the Blood Center’s electronic defenses against his nemesis, the leader of a rogue vampire gang. He’s ready for battle but not for Liese, who slips under his skin, laughs at his awful puns, charges beside him into dark, scary places—and tastes like his true love.

No matter how often Logan declares his love, Liese can’t bring herself to trust him. But when his archenemy comes after her, not trusting him may cost her life…
______________________________________________________________________________________________
Liese meets Logan when he comes in to tell her he works for the CEO and he's there to set up new security and all for the blood center. there is alot of jelousy(mostly from the girl) and misundertsandings from both characters in this book, but its really interesting and fits into the book perfectly. Liese can't come to trust Logan because she's been betrayed badly along time ago by her ex husband, and doesn't ever want to be betrayed again. but each time she spends with logan, she trys to hold back her desires but fails miserably.Logan brings out the human in her that she never knew she had, he made her feel special as any girl would want to be treated.I love some parts in this book where Race-Razor, made things funny and got punched for it.xDDD cracks me up haha.ha.haaa-but throughout logan starts to sorta earn liese's trust and in the end they marry and everyone's happy...well most people.

Oh what a fun book this was! I love, love, love Logan Steel (we met him in “Biting Nixie”) and Liese is just hysterical!

The whole gang is back in this installment of the “Biting” series by Mary Hughes. Liese now works for the Blood Center in Meier’s Corners. She was fired from her last job due to her ex-fiance’s lies and cannot, will not, ever trust any man again – especially one she thinks is trying to do away with her job. Her mom has cancer and she can’t afford to loose her job or her mom will not be able to finish her treatments. Logan Steel is hired to beef up the security at the Blood Center after the last attempt by the Lord Ruthven and the Lestats to steel the blood. What he finds when he gets there is his Mate. Now to convince Liese that he is a good vampire and that the bad vampires are the ones trying to ruin her, not him.

Again, it is impossible to review this book without giving away the whole story-line. Let’s just say that Lord Ruthven gets his … there is more eye-popping vampire sex…..Liese’s mom is a hoot … we meet more of the Coterie … there is one hell of a game of “Strip Sheepshead”… Detective Ruffles is back.

Fast paced and funny. Sexual tension and attracting in the first few pages, and it doesn't let up until the end. The comedy was more slapstick and cartoonish, but it worked because Leies was so sarcastic. A little bit of a throw back, due to the super alpha male, but he wasn't a jerk he was patient with the heroine and called her beautiful when she didn't believe she was. Another throw back was the forced seduction, which kind of bothered me, she kept saying 'no' and instead of respecting her he kept on trying to make out with her, until in the end she was so overwhelmed by her hormones she said 'yes'. But I stilled enjoyed the story and really liked the characters.

I think this maybe the best book of the series! It was funny, hot and smexy. Liese is just a bit insecure after being dump at the alter and fired from her job. She is now the manager of Meiers Corner Blood bank. Logan is the extremely handsome vampire and CEO of Steel Security. Logan's attraction to Liese is instant but Liese is wary and doesn't trust Logan. At times I was a little exasperated with Liese's insecurities about herself. But in the end, after all the doubts, drama and craziness that ensued, everything turned out as it should. Great read! I would recommend the series

I absolutely loved the MC of this book. Her snark made me laugh out loud several times throughout the book. I couldn't have asked for a more perfect love interest. This is the first I read in a series and was fine to pick it up and read without being lost. I know I will go back and read the previous ones. I would highly recommend this author. My only issue was the life span issue that was not covered in this book, along with the vampire history. Since I started reading a few books in, to be fair it may have been in the previous books. Sexy with a dash of humor...and just my cup of tea.

OK I really hate books that start with a missunderstanding or some character assumes something and the plots goes from there. I got 24% into the book and was total turned off when the main character started plotting with the 'ememy' because of her misguided logic. I stopped and didn't read any more. I have no patience for plot lines that spend time on goofy missunderstanding that later get figured out.

I loved BITING NIXIE, the 2nd in this series (which I read first), because I loved the character of Nixie. Computer geek Liese is just as smart-mouthed and cleverly written. The plot is complicated, the romance is believable (despite the incredible good looks of the hero), and the tech jokes are a delight to discover. Mary Hughes is wonderfully talented at writing humor and a fast pace with super sexy heroes.

I liked it.. Just not as much as I liked the other two. It's funny just... you get my point. The corny puns made you shake your head a time or two and sometimes laugh out loud. The fact that Liese is a technology geek gives me the warm fuzzies.. but there isn't as much of the town and its occupants in this book and they are part of which made the first two books funnier.

Another keeper! A lot of humour, although this book (4th) was less funny than the "Biting Nixie" which was the 2nd novel in the series. I actually liked the character of Logan in the 2nd book, but somehow I found him too serious in this novel. But, what I really appreciated where the references to my favourite Sci-Fy series ... by the "geek" Lies ... who says geeks are boring ;-)

I was intrigued by Logan in Nixie's story but I gotta admit I was expecting a little more bad assery out of him. Not that he wasn't a total alpha vamp but with the fear his name invoked I just assumed he was higher up the vamp food chain, none the less I enjoyed this and will be moving on. Perhaps we will see Luke in a story soon.
