And it all began rather serendipitously. Long ago, as they say, in another time, when fast food hadn't reached our area and the only shopping was what the feed mill offered, I was reading a book that annoyed me .

My husband was lying beside me in bed, watching TV. Turning to him, I sort of petulantly said, "How the hell did this book get published?"

"If you think you're so smart," he replied, with one eye still on the TV, "why don't you write a book?"

So I did. And very badly.

I've since learned how to do, he said, she said, and a great variety of other adverb heavy, sometimes lengthy explanations of why my characters are saying what they're saying, along with finally coming to an understanding of what things like POV means. Point of View for you non-writers}.

Although, I still don't fully comprehend why it matters if you switch POV and I cavalierly disregard it as much as possible. So while my technical skills have hopefully improved, what hasn't changed is my great joy in writing. There's as much pleasure today in listening to my characters talk while I type as fast as I can, as there was the first time I put dialogue to paper--in long-hand, then, in my leather bound sketch-book.

I did not enjoy this book. I was looking for something different in historical romances. London and the ton get old and I'd read a few other books of different genres that weren't quite there for me, so I opted for this book.

I don't like action movies with a lot of yelling and gunfire and this was the literary version of that. Page after page of war, guns, cannons, death, statistics that I didn't care about. However, I was amazed at the number of troops that fought all these wars. We're talking the numbers that match the population of major cities. I couldn't imagine where they got all these men and some of their wives and families traveled with them. It had to be utter chaos, but then every war is.

Andre Duras is a general for France and is in charge of fighting the Austrians and the Russians. He's a hedonist and likes his women, but never forms any sort of emotional bond with them. He's a brilliant strategist and has this war under control. The last thing he needs is the Russian general's wife taking a wrong turn and ending up in his camp, then his bed, begging him to give her a baby and proclaiming her undying love for him. I wanted to slap her for being so whiny and needy then I wanted to slap him for giving into her. Her husband is a general for the enemy. Did it never occur to him that she could be a spy? Why would he trust her? She did nothing to earn it. All she did was spread her legs, give him some hot sex, praise the size of his phallus, and tell him she would die without it. Oh my God, it was pathetic.

I didn't like Teo from the very beginning. I thought she was too easy, wanton, needy,, and clingy. She was a noose around his neck. "Oh Andre, take me with you. Please! Please!" I'm being sarcastic there, but she begged him time and again to take her with him. She told him she was in love with him right at the beginning of the book and they'd barely met. I believe in love at first sight, but this wasn't convincing at all. She wasn't happily married. Her husband was a brute. Duras was married, too, and his wife was with him for social gain while she's banging her uncle. It was sick and thankfully, there wasn't a whole lot said about it.

I also didn't like the fact that Duras cheated on Teo. It was mentioned in passing, but I guess it just goes to show that if they will do it with they will do it to you. I felt zero sympathy for her at any time and I thought Duras was a fool for just trusting those who he'd just met, especially her and the doctor.

The story is more of a recounting of a war with romance as a side story, if you can call it that. The romance happened way too fast with no feels, no emotional connections between the characters, and not one iota of any sort of strength or willpower from Teo. She was a horrible heroine and he wasn't much of a hero. He was being led around by the wrong head. They both got on my nerves.

I can't discount the war scenes that were complete with footnotes and an extensive Notes section at the end of the book that I skimmed through. The author knew her stuff and I have to give her credit for that, earning this book three stars.

*This book is part of a series, but can easily be read as a stand-alone novel

Taboo https://amzn.to/2Df8cHD is one of my absolute favorite books. Many don't like it, but that's alright, too, because Andre Duras will always be a keeper for me. I read this novel twice last year, and I don't know how many times that makes. I have posted my review on Amazon: https://amzn.to/2TXwAmG.

THIS WAS THE MOST DULLEST INSTALLMENT FROM JOHNSON

Truly this story puts love at first sight to shame when I don't even know what hit me when the characters met, chatting so politely and suddenly the heroine is begging for SEX with the hero and he too falls in lust....WTF?!

Normally I would do a breakdown of characters but this story truly doesn't need it. Throughout the entire story they were IN LOVE and had a baby together. As much as our hero claims he loves Teo, he wasn't even the least bit faithful while he was gone.

Perhaps it was the norm of the time, and they made no promises to one another. Boy, was it complicated during the wartime. There is no such thing as loyalty unless you are fighting for your country.

JUST SKIP THIS AND MOVE ON!

Military history with sex sprinkled in between the battles?

This was a difficult book for me to soldier through. ( No pun intended.) There were so many detailed troop movements in and around Switzerland, Rhine river, Ahr river and Italy. Also, consider the boundaries of the various European entities were not what they are today. It was exceedingly difficult to picture in one's mind the various military elements as they maneuvered across Europe. I lived in Germany and traveled Europe. I also was an officer in the US Army. Yet, I was plodding through the troop movements and battle descriptions.

I appreciate this author's research and I do not doubt the accuracy of her meticulous descriptions. Quite frankly though, the flow and engagement of the reader suffered mightily for the detail overload. Much of the battles described could have been summarized in clever pointed paragraphs allowing for character development to drive the plot, not the battles.

Character development suffered mightily. Teo, the heroine, seemed childish in her manner of speaking. Other times she was overly dramatic. The hero was better developed and the war through his eyes would have been sufficient exposition on the situation and times in which these characters found themselves needing to survive and overcome.

Adding to the choppiness of the narrative was the occasional breach of voicing from first person to a third person narrator commentary. Making some passages a hot mess.

There is no question this author can write. I intend to read most of her work. It seems a really good editor could have made this book a tour de force. I daresay a rewrite and a more apt title would be a excellent idea.

This author does write some creative, beautiful and stirring love scenes. So the rare instance she short changes these erotic encounters by summarizing frustrated me further.

I still recommend this book as a read because it does tell of a period of human history where the last gasp of kings and dictators soaked the soil of Europe in blood over petty squabbles and their own personal agendas. A lesson we should keep in mind while we still have an opportunity to participate in a democratic form of government.

In the incessant war following the French revolution, General Andre Duras (modeled after an actual general of the time) is France’s major weapon. His skills as a tactician and strategist, not to mention his concern for and loyalty from his soldiers, make him highly successful. During battles in eastern France, Duras detains Countess Teo Korsakova, the wife of the opposing commander. Duras is married to a cold manipulative aristocrat. Count Korsakov is a brutal husband. Andre and Teo fall in love. The barriers to their love are significant, but HEA is finally accomplished.

Author provides maps and footnotes.

90% descriptions of war & politics and 10% the worst, least believable romance plot ever. Characters have zero personality or chemistry. Just awful.

Countess Teo Korsakova is caught behind enemy lines and is captured by General Andre Duras, France's most victorious commander. For Teo, married at fifteen to the brutal Russian conqueror of her beloved Siberia, it is love at first sight when she meets General Duras. Andre is put off guard by Teo's openness and outright seduction of him. However, Andre becomes enamored of Teo's charms despite himself. Their love threatens disaster for the French army and promises to change the course of the war and history.

Realistically how can two people meet, have sex and fall madly in love in two days in 1799? She in one paragraph states her faithfulness to her husband and in the next is having sex with Andre and asking him to give her a child! The back of the book says she was "forced to marry the brutal Russian General who enslaved her people", but you never know more about her life before Khorsakov entered it. What was her life like before her people were conquered? What made Khorsakov so cruel? He was nothing more than a stock character-one with the word "villain" printed on his forehead.

"Taboo" is a somewhat disturbing book to read. Johnson seems to have been of two minds when she wrote this story. One part of the story is pure history, filled with facts and statistics, which makes it difficult for those who do not love historic fact to read. It seems like Johnson was so absorbed with the war details in this book that she forgot to develop her characters.

The plot in this book is ridiculous. They fall into bed with each other in the first 30 pages --after she talks about how faithful she is to her ahole of a husband. She seems like a weak indecisive woman who lacks conviction and true passion. I couldn't finish this book. Glad I didn't waste more than 50 cents on this book. Maybe someone else will like it.

A bit uneven. Thought the story got bogged down by a lot of historical detail, and Andre & Teo do spend significant portions of the book apart. When they are together it is sweet and sexy, but the 'fall in love' felt like it happened super fast. The both-married-but-our-spouses-are-awful-so-it's-fine aspect seemed a bit lazy.

Don't be scared off by other reviews claiming this is too historical! I almost skipped this book in the series and I'm glad I didn't. I just skimmed through the war-heavy parts, pausing when I saw Duras or Korsakov's names. The love story is very sweet and the sex is hot. Overall a good read.
