I’ve been wanting to read this series and what better way to discover more about the characters than to read this collection.

Ivy Granger, a psychic detective with some Fae in her blood line, is one tough lady, and that’s without special training and weapons. She’s smart, snarky, and you don’t want to be on her bad side. And if she doesn’t set you straight the first attempt, her friend and sidekick, Jinx, will take out the trash.

These short stories were just what I needed to get me started on the series. What’s not to love. Paranormal Detectives, loony vampires, a sexy demon that sizzles, trolls, werecats, and so much more.

I have to say my favorite was Club Nexus. It’s comprised of Iced, Dusted, Jinxed and Demonized. It’s a particularly nasty case and you get each of the four character’s views on how it all went down. Bloody mayhem, death, and that sexy demon I mentioned earlier made these wickedly delicious for me.

Haven’t met Ivy Granger and her pals yet? Give this a go. You’ll be glad you did.

This collection, featuring the 'Psychic Detective' Ivy Granger and her world contains the following~
1. Short story 'Frostbite';
2. Novella 'Blood and Mistletoe';
3. Four stories involving 'Club Nexus'— 'Iced', 'Dusted', 'Jinxed', 'Demonized';
4. Story 'Thrill on Joysen Hill'.
The stories are very poorly written YA caricatures of works of Nancy A Collins and Jim Butcher. Humour is forced and characterisation is shoddy. Most importantly, the so-called detective doesn't have any ability to detect anything without relying upon her touch-induced 'senses' and helps from others.
This sort of urban fantasy may work for others. Regrettably, it's not my cup of tea, as I found out.

And while I love the full length books, her novellas are entertaining and usually add more to her overall story. It’s a good day when I get a new book or story about Ivy.

Frostbite

Harborsmouth. A city located on ley lines and besieged with the supernatural is Ivy Granger’s work place. As the city’s only psychic detective, she has seen it all or as in the case of Frostbite, she thought she had. This is a short story starring Ivy and her work partner, Jinx, as they try to help a lady that lives in a so called haunted house. Although short, it told an interesting and a bit horrific story and even had a twist to go along with it. Just another glimpse of what Harborsmouth is all about. 4 stars.

Blood and Mistletoe

The longest of the novellas, Blood and Mistletoe takes place during the holidays, but couldn’t be further from a Christmas story if it tried. Forneus, the demon with a huge crush on Jinx, has asked Ivy for her assistance in finding out who is kidnapping and killing all sorts of different fae in the area. Left at each scene is a pool of blood with a piece of mistletoe. This takes Ivy into the bowels of an abandoned hotel that is full of paranormal denizens and not of the good sort. All my favorite characters are back for this installment and as always they are what make these stories for me-including a kitchen brownie, a teenage troll, Kaye, a powerful witch and friend to Ivy, as well as Jinx and Forneus. Paranormal serial killer? It’s all in a days work for Ivy. Well written! 4.5 stars.

Club Nexus

This novella is broken up into four short stories, each with a different person’s perspective of the same night at Club Nexus, a club for supernaturals to gather and party. In Iced, we get the perspective of a former high born fae woman who is now working as a bartender at Club Nexus. She is spelled to not be able to escape from the club by Puck-the original trickster. She is pushed into something nefarious by a mysterious visitor and gets way more than she bargained for. In Dusted, we get the perspective of a rogue vampire with more than just a taste for violence while having his blood meal. At Nexus, Puck makes sure that the vampire clientele with these proclivities are catered to. In Jinxed, we get Jinx’s view of the events that transpire during her girls night out with Ivy at Club Nexus. Jinx is human and Ivy is half human, and half Fae princess. Most humans would never even know about Club Nexus, but of course Jinx does. She is followed there by Forneus, the demon, who is just trying to keep her safe. Of course, Puck wants to use Jinx for his illicit purposes. Forneus isn’t about to let that happen-hopefully. In Demonized, we follow Forneus and get his view of the events that are unfolding. We also get to read about what he looks like underneath his facade. It’s not pretty and Jinx is a witness as well. Will Forneus ever get to win the girl after this night? I enjoyed how all the events and perspectives came together-very well thought out and written by the author. 4 stars.

Thrill on Joysen Hill

Torn is another character that fascinates me. He’s lord of the cat sidhe and has been at Ivy’s side during many a battle. For some reason. I picture a younger Johnny Depp when I picture Torn. Ivy gets him to babysit for the kitchen brownie, the teenage troll, and a demon toddler that Ivy is raising. Just because the toddler doesn’t like Torn doesn’t mean anything can go wrong does it? Well of course it does. This is a short story and for me a bit of comic relief for these novellas. This one has a monstrous villain as well as a monster, but still parts of this one will make you smile. 4 stars.

Two of these, Blood and Mistletoe and Club Nexus, I had already read, but I ended up fully immersed in the stories all over again-as I was with the two new ones. If you haven’t met Ivy, psychic detective and Harborsmouth hero, then you need to. With Ivy and all the many different characters, the author has created a fascinating paranormal world. A world I completely enjoy escaping to as quickly as this author writes them. Highly recommended to ages 15 plus.

24 and never even been...?!?
It's got to be tough living with Psychometry.
Helpful for being a PI though. Having second sight certainly, helps.
Especially if you are the Only PI in town. And Harborsmouth has enough trouble to keep a few dozen PIs busy.
The downside being that nearly all of the clients walking through Ivy Granger's door would be terminal to "Only Human" detectives, but their cases would be the stuff to easily drive a normal insane.

These are cases that all but drip danger. E.J. Stevens can sure set a proper mood.

This is a collection of short cases. My only complaints are that I don't know/wasn't told some of the backstories of Ivy.
First up is a haunted house story involving a place I wouldn't want to walk by, and I'm Damn well certain that I wouldn't be throwing any rocks at it - fearful of what the place might throw back at me!
Yes, I'm shown enough that I'm about ready to soil myself if I had to be inside a minute longer. But I never find out what happened to get things to this point. No strange stories floating around about it. Neighbors not noticing... oh, I guess Death & Mayhem each Friday night?
I'm NOT sorry for having read the case. I was well and truly interested and was easily feeling for the characters.
I just wanted More!
In the same vein, there are several toss-a-way references of Ivy's past cases.
With most of them being interesting enough that I'm left feeling cheated because I'll probably never hear anything more about them.
Damnit!
I'll admit that I'm not much of a Fantasy fan. Put a gun to my head and still, I wouldn't be able to tell you types or ranges of fae, or what House one would be from if...
Leaving me a bit worried when picking up a book like this, afraid that I'll have been left at the station three pages in.
Happily, that isn't the case here. There is enough explanation to act as my training wheels, yet I also guess that if you Really do know & love, the pool is deep for enjoyment.

On the good side - well, just about everything.
I had so much fun with these characters that I now that I'll be looking out for more of Ivy & Jinx.
And if I'm really lucky, maybe I'll find out more on those other "Missing" cases.

The Christmas story also is set with a lovely, dark & creepy mood.
With a powerful faerie and her pets surrounding a burning Yule log, time is quickly running out before Ivy loses on an agreement set with another very powerful witch.
Oh, and those aren't chestnuts roasting on an open spit!
Ivy has more than just Christmas to save!

There are also 4 stories from in and around the action going on at Club Nexus. One case, but as seen through separate eyes. Which is a singular entertainment experience deep in the heart of Harborsmouth.
Again, all is wonderfully chilling.

I want to like Ivy. One Vamp noted of her, "The faerie smelled like toasted pain and simmering hope."
Certainly, she is bright and skilled. Brave enough to jump into a battle by herself if need be.
I'm just looking for some backstory. Yes, she has Second Sight and all, but how did she get to be the Only PI in town?
Yet through all of these cases, I almost feel as if I know more about Jinx.
Maybe I can simply relate to her "Human" side easier.
Hopefully, more of Ivy will be revealed.

I received an eARC and voluntary choose to review it

I love when author bundles together several novellas from an universe for me it gives an useful additional insight into the series and i'm happy this one is doing it and more. Now some of the novellas can be read in any order, always better to read a series in order novellas included but in this case some are prequel and others gives enough information to satisfy a new reader without making him feel lost. That i absolutely loved it's really a great bonus.

Now since we are speaking novellas, i will give a short opinion on each one while trying to avoid spoilers too much.

Frostbite: really good, creepy would have it been perfect around halloween time. We discover a bit of Ivy and we see some of her limits as well. Fast paced it's read very quickly.

Blood and Mistletoes: We meet again with some secondary characters we met in the main series like Marvin, Kaye or Jenna so it's really enjoyable and for a new reader the author does explain who they are and how Ivy met them so it was really not disturbing or confusing. The investigation is short ( this is a novella after all) but we get all the right elements...i loved to see Ivy deep sense of Justice

Club Nexus: This one is in 4 parts/chapter that must be read in order as in each one we get the event from one point of view and deepening some aspect over others... very interesting....we discover more about the demon Forneus and if read in order we do see how much Ivy and Jinx have improved.
It's dark, is sure to have effect later in the series but can be read even if you only have started the series or read the anthology to this point without confusion ( or very little spoilers only)


Thrill on Joysen Hill: This one is very spoilerish if you haven't read the first 5 books in the series so i do recommend you to wait until you have read those to really savour it. Really it's better as it doesn't really focus on Ivy as she is busy doing something i won't tell and we see a bit more of a secondary character we saw earlier in the series: Sir Torn the cat sidhe king.... he is a funny character i really love him so i was happy to read this but i really do regret not having been up to date in the series first...it can be confusing a little or letting us with more questions...as a result at this point it's the one i enjoyed the less in the anthology but it's still a very good one simply better for a reader of the series ( and one up to date) not the best at all for a new reader

This anthology does a great job showcasing various denizens and their activities in Harborsmouth. EJ has a remarkable talent to write stories that capture the multiple moods and dispositions of a menagerie of magical creatures in a distinctively engaging way.

Frostbite
In this story Ivy and Jinx investigate a haunted house. There are some odd twists and strange encounters in this spooky tale. I enjoyed it and thought it was a great launching off point for this book.

Blood and Mistletoe
I loved the opening of this novella and agree with Ivy that coffee should not taste like gingerbread. Ivy is sassy and funny as she investigates some unusually gruesome holiday murders with the help of some quirky friends. This story is my favorite one in this anthology because of the outstanding plotting and character interactions

Club Nexus
Four short stories, each of which revolves around the same event but is told from a different perspective. A decidedly darker glimpse at the supernatural underbelly of Harborsmouth, this collection is well-thought out. Each story stands fine on its own, but when interwoven with the others gives the reader an experience that is uniquely entertaining. It is also a perfect lead-in to Burning Bright. Experience the romance, humor, and danger at Club Nexus!

Thrill on Joysen Hill
Lord of the cat sidhe, Torn, has agreed to babysit Marvin, Hob, and Sparky for a few hours so Ivy and Jinx can enjoy Ivy’s bachelorette party and relax a bit. So begins a madcap adventure as Torn tries his best to entertain his temporary charges. Steering clear of trouble is just not on the agenda for Torn. Torn uncovers evil masquerading as innocence and deals with the issue in his own unique way. The tone of the story stays funny rather than disturbing. The upbeat wacky tempo was a superb way to end this anthology.

Yet again I have got extremely lucky and managed to find a new series that I can add to my ever-expanding To-Read list. If, like me, you are a fan of Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files and Kim Harrison’s Hollows series then you will definitely enjoy Ivy Granger’s adventures.

The characters, style, setting and plot are in the same vein, but just as Harry Dresden and Rachel Morgan are distinct, so is Ivy. Her powers involve getting visions, which aid her in investigating and solving crimes, rather than being able to fuego and leyline blast her way out of trouble. Her supporting cast is instantly engaging, even the minor bit players, as you will find in this collection which is the complete set of novellas from the series so far.

The format enables a taster of the author’s style and content, and the individual stories are excellent and stand alone well even without having read the main novels for context.

My personal favourite from this set was Club Nexus, which consists of four short stories telling the same story from the perspectives of four different characters. The character’s voices were distinct and unique, and it was fascinating seeing the story unfold and interweave with each additional viewpoint.

The genre here is urban fantasy so expect magic, vampires, fae etc, crossed with city-based detective noir and plenty of snarky banter.

There is nothing here I would change or improve on. I’m just thrilled to be able to add another writer to my favourites pile; and there are nine full novels in the series (not counting this collection), so that should keep me going for a while!

Nice and quick read full of suspenseful short stories that keep you engaged from the beginning to the end.
Frostbite was a scary, nearly horror tale about a desperate solution one desperate mom carried out for her children... and then came to Ivy to ask her for help.
Blood and mistletoe brought up a powerful faerie mistress who went insane with loss and called upon the darkest powers to finish a rite and summon him from death. Murders, no clues, and constant fear are present here, the mood lightened by the humorous language and entertaining interactions between Jinx and Ivy.
The next four shorts, Iced, Dusted, Jinxed, and Demonized, provide the retellings of the same story, each one from a different perspective, told by different characters, and with each one we uncover more to the story. The messy situation at the luxury club brings out the best, and the worst, in some characters, pointing out on the ancient wars between fae courts, vampires´ bloodlust, the trickster club owner´s - Puck´s- greed, and surprisingly gentle heart of a demon.
And the Thrill on Joysen Hill pictures a nice adventure at an entertainment park, with three unstoppable children, each of them a magical creature - but the youngest demon a force to be reckoned with when left out of sight, he simply begs for trouble.
Uncovering the secret life of Harborsmouth where mundane world is intervowen with the supernatural and a psychometric PI, Ivy Granger, puts her skills to serve the justice, is very enjoyable and relaxing read. For people who haven´t read the main series it might come out jarred, with jumping over longer time spans when many things in the character lives changed, but the shorts still provide enough information to be read as standalones with full understanding. You only lack the depth in the characters and the development in their relationships - which might be motivation enough to grab another book from this author and get to know more.

Tales from Harborsmouth is a wonderful collection of novellas within the world of Ivy Granger. If this is your first experience in Ivy's world - welcome! I hope you enjoyed all of the stories in the collection and they have piqued your interest in the urban fantasy series by E.J. Stevens. You won't be disappointed. If you're familiar with the series - isn't this series great!? I've read everything in the Ivy Granger, Psychic Detective series and love how they just keep evolving.

My favorite story in Tales from Harborsmouth is Club Nexus. Told from four different points of view, the reader sees everyone's take on the same situation. The author succeeds in bringing a uniqueness to the short stories that I've never encountered before. I really enjoyed the different aspects of the same basic scenes/events.

I have enjoyed the world of Ivy Granger since Book 1. The series is easy to read, understand, and follow. The characters are written so well. The good guys and gals are likable and you definitely find yourself rooting for them. The baddies are also well written and sometimes give the reader the shivers.

Please make sure to read the books in order since the world and character building, plotlines, subjects, and themes build off of the previous books.

Tales From Harborsmouth is a collection of short stories that fall between the regular full length books. They are like little side trips of Ivy and friends doing what they do best. This was a quick, fun read and I really enjoy Ivy and her "can do" attitude and snarky sense of humor.

Side note: Thrill On Joysen Hill (Ivy Granger 5.5) has a couple of spoilers in it if you haven't already read the previous books in the series.

For those who want to know: There is some language and violence (but not excessively).

This was a fun book to read. It is made up of a few short stories that go with the Harborsmouth books.
I enjoyed reading these Ivy Granger is a great character and there is so much different paranormal it keeps you going. Now to go and read the other books by E.J Stevens.

These enchanting tales are a delightful introduction the world of Ivy Granger, psychic detective. Ivy is prepared to battle vampires, daemons or fae as she protects our world from the supernatural. She is assisted by the strangest group of friends, to solve the deadly problems she faces. I look forward to more adventures as she grows into her halfling powers, for Ms. Stevens brings her stories to life with strong characters, unique perspectives and eerie settings.

An interesting insight to this amazing world with really fascinating characters!
My only criticism is that some of the stories could have been more fully developed - but I understand that they're supposed to be short. Nice to have them as a collection all together.

I got the book back in August of 2018 and never got around to reading it until now. E.J. Stevens is rapidly becoming a go-to author for me! (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).

I really liked this collection of short stories and novella that introduced me to the enjoyable and whimsical characters that make up the Psychic Detective world. It was a quick and fun read. The group of 4 short stories at the end telling one incident from each of the character's viewpoints was one of the highlights for me. It was easy to see how the author keyed in on specific details to make each of their stories unique to the each of them. The last story was just plain entertainment and icing on the cake so to speak. This is a very late voluntary review of an Advanced Reader Copy of the book.

Stand aside Anita Blake - you have competition

Loved it! A mix of Stephanie Plum and Anita Blake. Kept you reading throughout just to see how she would survive. Although these are short stories, the best thing is that they tend to follow one to the other and thereby giving you a sense of consistency. A really terrific read recommended for all who love Fantasy with strong female leads. Ones who aren't afraid to act first and question later.

Four separate Ivy Granger stories

First story about a house, not only haunted, but in need of help to move on.

Second story about a necromancer fairy who has lost her mind and the problems she causes.

Third story with four different viewpoints about a bar run by Pick for the depraved.

Fourth story you get to meet the Car Lord Sithe, who is taking Hob the kitchen brownie from Kate the Witch's house, Marvin the teenage Bridge Troll and Sparky the demon kid, to keep them out of trouble while Ivy and Jinx have their bachelorette party.

I was lucky enough to receive a copy of this book.
I have to say that I only read the first story in the book then stopped, not because I didn't enjoy it but because I loved it I had to go get book one so that I could read them in order.
I have since read book one Shadow Sight and the second of the short stories.
Now of to buy the second book, once I've read that I will go back to Tales from the Harboursmouth to read the next story and so on.

Any opinions are honest and and my own.

This is my first taste of Ivy & Jinx and I promise it will not be the last. Anyone that has read my reviews before knows that I absolutely love demons & magic. This has both in spades. That Jinx is one feisty lady. Another author added to my must read list. Read this in 2 days. Very highly recommended must read.

Unusual, interesting, great collection

It's rare for my favorites to write the same scene from the different views of all the people and Fae involved. She's really captured the characters and feeling of this crazy city. I recommend reading this after the third book 😊

Fun shorts!

I really enjoyed these short stories. They provide far more entertainment in the world of Ivy Granger, I find that Hob and the other characters and the short stories are far more interesting in the series. The last 2 stories really bring the world to life and the darkness of the fae to the forefront.

I FELT THE STORIES IN THIS ANTHOLOGY OF SHORT STORIES HAS POTENTIAL. I FEEL THE SOME OF THE STORIES NEEDED A LITTLE MORE DEPTH AND CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT. I DID LOVE THE IDEA OF CLUB NEXUS WHICH WAS THE SAME STORY TOLD FROM FOUR DIFFERENT POV.

This is one of the few series in which the short stories are excellent. I recommend this collection to anyone who enjoys the Ivy Granger books. If you haven’t read the books, you will probably be a bit lost.

A well-written story about Psychic Detective Ivy Granger and her friends. They encounter Vampires, Fey characters as in Seelie and also Unseelie fairies, Demons, Witches and the worst of them all Puck. I really enjoyed the way this story was done. Good storyline and lots of humor in it too.
