Time is not a river. It is a vast cosmic sea, where each life exists as rippling circles on its surface. Usually, the eternal ocean oscillates in harmony, all lives breathing up and down as one. But something has broken this equilibrium, turning the cosmic ocean into turbulent waters . . .
In 1828, Daniel Ashton, Lord Whitmoor, faces a problem of epic proportion—an earthquake has caused the time portal in Duir Cottage to stop functioning, disrupting the cosmic ocean and threatening Time itself. He needs a computer to crunch numbers and provide a solution. But with the time portal on the fritz, a computer is two hundred years in the future. So Daniel sets out to find the next best thing—an anonymous mathematical genius of legendary renown.
Fossi Lovejoy knows she is too odd, too intelligent, too old and too poor to ever marry. So she busies herself in her father’s ministry and her mathematical equations, choosing to focus on what she has, not what she lacks. But then Lord Whitmoor publishes one of her private theorems, taunting her to respond. Fossi is compelled to action—when you have so little in life, you defend the few things that are yours with ferocious tenacity. Even if it means matching wits with the infamous Lord Whitmoor.
Can two people past their youth find unexpected love?
This final installment in the Amazon bestselling House of Oak series can easily be read as a stand-alone book. Check out the other books in the series, all available now on Amazon:
Intertwine (House of Oak, Book 1) Divine (House of Oak, Book 2) Clandestine (House of Oak, Book 3) Refine (House of Oak, Book 4)
This is fifth in a series and couples from the other books pepper this one to an annoying degree. They smirk and banter and crack in-jokes, so it's probably better if you read the others first.
I really shouldn't have finished this. I knew from the prologue that Van intended to draw out the mystery of Daniel's guilt and pain and by the ¼ point it was clear she just loooved dancing coyly about hinting and teasing (for the curious, it's at 58% that the special-coy-I've-got-a-seeekret dance finally ends). I hate that. It kept me from liking Daniel, though that was probably inevitable anyway. I mean, the guy is an oblivious idiot who ignores every source of sense because he must feel all the feelz. Nobody's pain is like his and he must wallow in guilt and a drive to do the thing that literally everybody around him says is a bad idea and, oh yeah, provide tons of pain and distress on the one person I actually liked in the book.
I liked Foster (stupid name, but I refuse to use the stupider diminutive "Fossi"). I liked her kindness and determination to do her best and her acceptance of her own quirks and foibles. I liked her ability to roll with everything thrown her way. The initial confrontation with Daniel makes zero sense, so I kind of had to just give the story its premise in that scene, but the rest of her motivations held together just fine. I even went along with her attachment to Daniel, even though he's totally not my type at all and I'd as soon he end up broken and alone as the emotionally abandoning deadbeat he was.
Ahem. Anyway, Foster almost kept this from dipping below two stars on her very own, but alas, once I understood the plot that became impossible to maintain. I tried to buy into the hand-wavy bits about math and infinity and resonance and frequencies but it really, really doesn't work. Not if you know anything about math or resonance or wavelengths or infinity. I probably could have gotten through that better if it hadn't been so omnipresent. I'm not sure how that could have changed given the story Van wanted to tell, but by the end it grated so badly that I didn't care any more.
So yeah. I finished it because I liked Foster. If this weren't a romance story, I almost wish (and take this spoiler seriously) .
A note about Chaste: There's some kissing and that's about it. Frankly, this is another hand-wavy part because . Anyway, the kissing was a bit underwhelming, but it's possible I feel that way because of how much I disliked Daniel...
Before I start let me tell you that Outshine which is book #5 of the House of Oak can be read standalone. I have read the author’s Brothers Maledetti Series, but none of this series and did not struggle at all after the prologue. The prologue confused me, but everything of the character history and world building was seamlessly explained very quickly once I got in the main body’s first few chapters.
The introduction scene to the hero Daniel Ashton, Lord Whitmoor, definitely was intriguing and made me want to read some of the other titles in the series that might have other similar suspenseful scenes. Daniel is on his last mission as an operative of the British crown after deciding to retire. He is very gifted at it and was earlier awarded his title and the properties from the British crown because of these talents. He reminded me of the character Jack Cavanaugh of the book Pimpernel by Sheralyn Pratt. Daniel’s ability at disguise was only equaled by his ability to psychologically profile his opponents in order to gaslight them into believing anything he wanted, trick them into telling him information he needed, and manipulate them to do what ever he wants. I loved that he was never able to do these things to the heroine Fossi Lovejoy to his stumped astonishment. Daniel as an operative is only two brief scenes in the beginning of the novel, because like I said this was his last mission, but I enjoyed the light entertaining humorous diversion at the beginning before things got more deep and serious for the hero. There is mystery throughout the novel of why Daniel is so deeply burdened and emotionally racked in guilt, and what besides the obvious altruistic reasons to fix the time portal are Daniel’s true intentions with the time portal?
I like when a British Regency Era novel shows the sociological ills of the era and makes you think about them long after the novel is finished. I appreciated the author doing this with the heroine Fossi Lovejoy. Fossi has quite the brilliant mind. Fossi is an extraordinarily gifted mathematics and mathematical sciences prodigy. She is like the Archimedes of her time. Another Carl Friedrich Gauss. Yet in that era and society she can never share her brilliance in public or contribute to advancing the mathematical sciences. She is instead considered unmarriageable, an burden to family and society, and worst of all considers herself disposable. She is wracked with loneliness, the burden of wearing a mask for society, and not being the recipient of love (familial or romantic). Daniel who originally was an engineering student at an university in the 21rst century before he went “native” in the past British Regency Era was the perfect man for Fossi to understand her. Fossi was the perfect woman for Daniel who desired an intelligent, loyal, and unselfish companion after his prior bad romance history.
In conclusion, I have to just say wow! What a meaningful ending and the epilogue that followed was just so beautiful!
Sensuality content: Clean. Mild kissing. Told of an unfaithful spouse with no details.
Source: Received a copy from a third party that required no review. I own the entire series though I have never read the others at the time of this review.
This might be my favorite in the series. I loved both the main characters, and was drawn in by the conflicts, the chemistry, and the bravery. Lovely, romantic, clean.
I am a fan of Nicole Van's and have loved every book I've read of hers. I have read the Brothers Maledetti series and the first book of this series (House of Oak). I had hoped to read all the books in between but ran out of time with all the fun summer happenings, so I jumped ahead to book #5, which you can read as a standalone. But I do encourage you reading at least the first book if not all the others in the series first. I think book one gives you a good foundation for how the time travel works and a little bit about who some of the characters are. Plus it's a great read so I think it's worth the time. Intertwine is book one and you can read my review for it here if you're interested.
I loved Fossi! She is definitely a well written character that shows a lot of depth and personal thought. I loved her thoughts and emotions throughout the book but especially near the end of the novel. Definitely gives you a good perspective on the whole time travel philosophies. I loved reading and seeing this side of the author's thoughts as she created Fossi's character. I also really liked how she connected Fossi and her brilliant mind in with historical information. As a reader I felt an instant connection with Fossi, her life, her desires and dreams and I loved how, as a woman in the 19th century, she was willing to reach for those goals and dreams and stand up to protect them. Although she had a rough family life, even while she did all she could to show love and support and give help to her family, she did it through love. It was heartbreaking when she realized the moment that all her perceptions weren't necessarily true. I must admit I had a few tears that leaked out. I loved Fossi!!!
Daniel was a great hero. Now I will also admit that there were times that I was mad at him. Not that I ever got to the point that I didn't like it him but I was definitely MAD at him off and on. The more that was revealed the further on in the story though sheds lots of light on everything(well of course right?). His heartache and life had several hard moments as well and was a mystery for a good amount of the story. But as a reader you felt the strong desire he had to right whatever the wrong was and fix his mistake. Boy oh boy, it was heartbreaking. But the fix didn't necessarily fix it either...just added another layer and dimension to his life. Now that might not make a lot of sense but it just means you need to read this book to enjoy all the dimensions and characters and life woven throughout.
I really wish that I could share some quotes with you but when I went back to my digital copy to look at my highlights, I wanted to cry because NONE of them saved. What????? Ugh, I had so many great ones. But it just gives you more incentive right? Maybe? Hopefully! I loved so much about this book! It took me a little longer to read it because I was on vacation at the time but I was able to savor the moments longer than if I had just gobbled it up super fast, as per usual.
If this is a series or author you've been following, I think you'll enjoy Daniel and Fossi's story. If you haven't bee following either, then I highly recommend you taking the chance and checking out Nicole Van's work. I am hooked!
Content: I read this on vacation and several other books while on vacation for several weeks that I can't fully remember the content. I do remember that I thought it was a clean read. There are some great kisses, some talk about death, I can't remember any innuendos but if there were they would have been very mild because again I would say this is a clean read. There is very mild religious talk in the book because Fossi's father is a minister of sorts but it's not preachy, it fits perfect with the story.
I received a copy from ebooks. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.
Charming! I immediately fell in love with Fossi, and cheered her for her throughout! Daniel was also great, but oh, Fossi! You sweetie! I want to set your crap family on fire!
Loved the perfect mixture of historical romance and light sci fi, great banter, great kissing scenes!
Yea! Finally finished the last book in the House of Oak series. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this series. Each book focuses on a different couple, but they all intertwine over time, which adds an extra sparkly piece of fun to the adventure. This book features Daniel Ashton (Kit’s little brother) and Fossi Lovejoy (a brilliant mathematician who Daniel hires to help him solve his secret problem he can’t really tell her about—er….the time portal). Fossi is sweet, downtrodden, undervalued, and almost invisible to her family and society. But inside, she is vibrant color and life. Too bad her circumstances make her keep all her brilliance and vibrancy locked up tight. When she meets Daniel, the bigger than life Lord Whitmore, she is blown away by the man. He is a keeper of secrets and guards himself and his true emotions like a mighty fortress. But when he seems to ‘see’ her, really see her, Fossi’s heart foolishly falls for him…though she tries hard not to let that happen. She really does.
The time portal is whacked out in this book, people’s lives hang in the balance, and Daniel feels he must do whatever it costs to fix what he has broken. He can’t move on until he does. But moving on might make him lose what he has come to cherish most. Fossi.
Another winner by Nichole Van. She is seriously a master-mind brilliant novelist. Please write more!!! That’s all have to say about this. Now that I’ve made it through all her books, I am a devoted fan and will read whatever she puts out next.
Wow what an ending. Probably the deepest and most real of all the books in the series. It hits on some very true aspects of life. I love that Van can tell a fiction time travel story but bring in real elements of life that we all deal with and make it all so real. I enjoyed this one is a deeper way then the others. I was a little worried there were things I wasn't going to like it but it all came out so beautifully in the end:] I am so sad to see the end of this series and that is a rare thing. I am normally very done with most book series and ready to move away from them. I just adore Van's writing style and characters. Ok for teens:}
OUTSHINE was a very pleasant surprise. A highly enjoyable historical romance with a few twists including a few of the scifi kind. Historical readers will love the setting while romance readers will love the banter and constant chemistry between the main characters. Readers will love diving into this one!
I loved these characters! The main characters were so very fun, especially as they completely challenged each other. I adored Fossi and how her brain worked. She was such a good counter to Daniel and I loved all his strengths and weaknesses as well. There was also a great cast of side characters, who I adored. I loved how everyone interacted and the numerous times I couldn't help but laugh out loud from the characters' words or actions.
Then there was the romance... This one was so perfect. I loved the back and forth Daniel and Fossi as well as all the fabulous banter. I also loved how sweet it was while there also being a good amount of chemistry. There was also the whole time travel aspect. I always struggle a little with sustaining belief for things like this, but this one worked, for the most part. I was happy that it was a small part of the story. I wasn't sure how everything would turn out and my heart was torn for Daniel and the choice he had to make.
In the end, was it what I wished for? This was much more than I expected. It was an absolute delight to read! I was so invested in these characters, which in turn made me laugh, cry, and igh with happiness. Now I'll be reading the rest of the books in the series and seeing what this author releases next.
Content: Clean Source: I received a complimentary copy from ebooksforreview.com, which did not require a review nor affect it in any way.
I haven't read the other 4 books in this series, but they're next on my list.
I really liked this story. Very well written and full of emotion. Fossi was a selfless character, full of hope in some ways, and broken down in others. I felt her pain. It was especially hard when she was willing to sacrifice herself knowing the possible outcome. Daniel was another character suffering from a mistake he did, and his pain was great as well. It was this pain they recognized in the other that brought them together, and I loved how their relationship developed.
The ending was awesome. Totally recommend this one. I couldn't put it down.
This book wasn't my favorite of this House of Oak series but I liked many things about it. First, Fossi has a brilliant mind! She is such a thinker and I loved that about her. Smart women were so frowned upon in that time period which is such a crying shame. I'm so glad we live in time now where in most places, women can be smart and it's cool! Daniel is perfect for Fossi because he needs her brilliant mind and because he hails from a different time, he knows has a better outlook on women in general. I also loved Fossi's "list" and how Daniel helped make that happen for her. It was so sweet.
Daniel's story is so tragic. So heart wrenching. His desperation and determination shine through perfectly.
I think the story just moved so slowly at some points in the beginning. I wanted to skip ahead to where things would start moving along. But, I didn't. I was a good girl and kept at it. I loved the last third of the book. It was my favorite part. I can't tell you why, but I loved Fossi even more in the end.
Nichole Van is one of my favorite authors. I think she is exceptionally talented and I love reading her books.
Available to borrow from the Kindle Lending Library.
No person in England was more unmarriageable than a plain, aging, poor, clever woman.
…that unassailable fortress. Fossi hazarded that very, very few people were allowed to see the true Daniel Ashton. But, she suspected, the real man behind the wall would be a fascinating one. That was the problem with men who hid in iron-willed fortresses.
Book 4 (which I read almost five years ago) was supposed to be the end of this series, but here we are again. I had forgotten how well written and entertaining these are. Glad to be back in this world! The one thing that I have an issue with is that the H is very stubborn in his pain and self-condemnation to the exclusion of common sense and the well-being of those around him . It got old quickly.
Once you had lived unrelenting horror and loss, you would never again confuse those profound emotions with their lesser siblings—irritation, frustration, disappointment. True suffering had a tendency to blow away the chaff of life, leaving only hardened grain.
Loved it!! Such a great wrap-up to the series and it was so fun to have Daniel's story. If you enjoy time travel romance, I highly recommend this series!!
I didn't realize that there would be another book in the House of Oak series, but I was delighted to buy it! All of the books have interrelated characters, but can be read independently or out of order. This story focuses on Daniel Ashton (Kit's brother from Clandestine, book 3).
The time portal is broken and he searches out mathematician, Foster Lovejoy to help him solve the problem mathematically. What he doesn't realize is that Foster, Fosse, is a woman.
The theoretical math was beyond me in this book, but I loved the character. Fosse was brilliant, but had never been valued. Daniel seemed hard, yet had a vulnerable side. I loved watching them see each other.
My favorite scene included a confrontation where some character from previous books were sitting on the sidelines making pithy comments, and some modern ones too (you go girl!).
I would recommend starting with book one, but this is a great series with time travel, romance, and a healthy dose of humor. I love Nichole Van!
Content: clean (some kissing, mild language, mild violence, talk of a unfaithful spouse)
Outshine was the first book of this series that I read. So that may have influenced how I felt about some of the world building. In this series there is a kind of time travel, but for me the rules of this time travel were very vague and I did not understand some of the actions they undertook. But this could be because I did not read the other books in this series.
I loved the mathematical language and jokes. It is not something you come across with a lot in regency novels and this was original. Sometimes the jokes were a bit bad, but that was something I liked about it. The two main characters Daniel and Fossi start out as friends. This resulted in a more natural relationship. Another thing I enjoyed about this book was how Fossi stood up for herself towards her family.
The ending was a bit lacking in my opinion. I would have liked to see more of what happens to Kit and the other characters after the novel has ended. Overall this book was great and I really enjoyed reading it!
*I received a free ebook in exchange for an honest review*
It is 1828, and Daniel Ashton, Lord Whitmoor, has to find a mathematician to solve his problem, or all will be lost. The time portal is broken, and is he can't find someone to help him fix it, then he will never be able to repair the damage to history that he has caused. Enter Foster Lovegood, a brilliant mind, that just happens to be a woman - living in a time period when not only are women are not educated, but are discouraged from thinking beyond their station. But Daniel needs her, and he will pay whatever it may cost to have her help. But he and Fossi may just get more than they bargained for in their agreement, and Daniel will face a choice that he doesn't want to make.
I really enjoyed this, and although it wasn't my favorite, I loved Fossi's character and how she grew throughout the story. It was also a wonderful look at how we cannot always fix our mistakes, but must find a way to forgive ourselves and move on.
I didn't realize I wanted more of Daniel's story until I got it! This book has it all....unique character's, heartbreaking decisions, and a touch of danger. Van's writing shines again, making this one of those rare, re-readable series!
This is the 5th book in the House of Oak timetravel series by Nichole Van. For the most enjoyment and understanding, please read them in order.
I have been listening to this series, more on that in a minute, and was ready for this book, just as it became available on audio. I have an Everand subscription where I'd listened to all of the others. I checked every day, often many times per day, from the time it was released until the day it was available on Everand. I literally squealed with delight and immediately downloaded it! I was not disappointed.
I love, Love , LOVE an intelligent female leading character. Fossi is brilliant, both literally and figuratively. Her character touched my heart. I just wanted to hug her through the whole book.
I don't always love knowing that there's something big that the reader is missing. But, I trust Nichole Van and her story telling. She didn't disappoint me!
I also love that the portal is almost it's own character. I do still have 1 question that I may need to go back and see if it was addressed. But oh my, I wish there could be more books in this series! I love time travel stories so much, but it is hard to find them without paranormal activity. I think of this one as more based in science fiction than mysticism.
And now for the audiobook narrator! Wow! She does this series justice. It's like she is the author reading the words just as they were meant when written. She pulls me with her reading. I purposely listened as 1.2x instead of my more normal 1.5x or 1.8x, so I could savor the book and the audio.
I always race through Nichole Van’s books. The way she writes pulls me in and I just can’t stop reading. Outshine was no different! There is humor, romance, depth and emotion. I absolutely loved it!
I was so excited that Daniel got his own story! It was so fun to see how much he has thrived in Regency England. He has also faced tragedy. We learn in the prologue that Daniel has made some kind of mistake that he is determined to fix. His desperation is obvious, and my heart ached for him before I even knew what happened. In his efforts to fix his mistake, he meets Fossi.
Fossi is brilliant! Genius status! Of course, in her time, that made her unmarriageable and an embarrassment to her family. That was one reason Daniel was so perfect for her. Being from the 21st century, he admired her intellect and strength. He accepted and loved her for exactly who she was – in every way.
I loved the way their relationship developed. They started as friends (though some sparks were definitely there), and came to really trust and understand each other. Their mathematical banter was fun, as was Fossi’s mathematical way of thinking about a relationship.
I love this whole series!! It is one I will definitely reread! The books could stand alone, but I would recommend reading them in order. You will understand what is happening much better.
I received a complimentary copy of the book, which I voluntarily reviewed. I have given my honest opinion.
I am in a big backlist mood as of late and I loved getting to check this series off of my list! I adore Nichole Van’s books and this has been a fun series. I easily think this is my favorite and I loved the emotional depth and journey Daniel and Fossi went on.
There were so many good swoony moments and these tender quiet ones where the trust was built and you could see how much faith they had in each other when the action filled ending came about. I loved their relationship. I loved that Daniel wanted to be with Fossi completely as she is, and that Fossi found a home in Daniel. They had a beautiful dynamic.
Overall audience notes: - Time travel romance - Language: none - Romance: kisses - Violence: low - Content Warnings: loss of a son (recounted)
I HIGHLY recommend reading this series in order. Although I was told you can read this as a stand alone novel, it reads more easily if you have a grasp of the characters. For example--Daniel is from the 21st century but is Lord Whitmoor in the 1820's--all of this is explained in a previous novel. No back story is given. It is assumed you know what is going on as the story starts. Foster is a great character. She is a brilliant mathematician, but women weren't allowed in mathematical societies. She is hired to help Daniel uncover the reason the time portal has ceased to function correctly. A fun read with likable characters & a great ending to the series.
House of Oak is a favorite series of mine. I was blown away by the first book, and each one after just got better. When my friend told me a 5th book had been released I snatched it up immediately! I love these characters and their stories, they're so strong and contain substance, and each character's story comes with such heart rending moments. Each book has a powerful love story associated with it, and this one is no different. Daniel and Fossi are such well-written and relatable characters. This series is truly a masterpiece in my eyes.
This whole series is fresh and vibrant with adorable characters. Each book is different and has its own appeal. Building on the previous stories in this series it weaves a lovely story that you can’t help wishing was true. I loved Nichole’s writing style and enjoyed these books so much.
I stumbled upon intertwine shortly after it released and have followed all of nichole van's book since. She has such an amazing way of sucking you into her world no matter the time or location. As I said this book wrapped up the series beautifully even though I am sad to see it end. I can't wait to read more of her work!
Ahh...Daniel. (Heavy Sigh) I was so shocked to see the 5th book had come out that I could not wait to read it. I loved the interactions between Daniel and Fossi. This series ended on a fabulous note! Favorite parts include popcorn, action and reaction, and the kisses. I will say no more! If you have not read the first four, read them first!
How is every single Nichole Van book a 5 star book? Maybe I just connect with her writing style or the way she writes characters or something! And the narrators are always excellent too. I am crying bc the series is over! I loved every single book but this one was my favorite of the series. The characters were just so unique and likable! Fossi and Daniel were older so they faced different problems than a younger character would. The trials they faced made my heart ache though!! Oh man I just FELT in this book. The whole range of emotions. The story had the best Christian theme than any of Vans other books I read. The Christian themes were so good!! I rave about them at the end of the book notes. Van just knows how to slowly reveal the answers to the mystery in such an epic way. I am on the edge of my seat the whole time. Fossi and Daniel have my heart. Both as individuals and together as a couple. I will probably think about this book for a long time. And bonus! I loved seeing favorite characters from previous books!
SPOILERS and book notes: 1828 Something happened with Jasmine and the portal!! That was two years previous. And daniel thinks it is his fault. Daniel to act as a spy dresses in his alter ego Franny the fishmonger who shouts insults at sailers. An ugly old fat woman. She shouts regency style yo momma jokes. she extracts information in the most obnoxious way posssible. Bahaha it’s the perfect disguise. Daniel worked in the home office and served the crown for ten years. Daniel whitmoor was created into a verb bc his skills as a detective are legendary. You’ve been “Whitmoord” haha. I love Fossi with my whole heart. She is so quirky. And is traveling with out a companion. She is so determined to confront Daniel on stealing her math theorem!! He has been trying to find this mysterious a math genius for some time and he is FLOORED to find out she is a woman. Ooo they are both super smart so it is a very epic battle of wits!! It’s like a chess match with words. Now he has to convince her to work for him. Aww poor fossi. Bc she is a spinster no one ever touched her or held her. Her mother named her “Foster” bc that is what she was here on this earth to do. “Foster love among us.” Aww she made a list of things she wants: taste pineapple, wear a new dress, get a gift for her birthday, flirt, kiss, and marriage proposal, be accepted as a woman mathmeticion. But she marks some of them impossible. I looove that she can call him out when he is being deceitful and calculating and rehearsed. She will be able to tell when he is being his true self I just know it. And she does! When he laughs with out abandon. “He is beautiful not a sunset but like a storm tossed sea or lightning.” “Beauty that came from awe and power and rare and liberated.” She will no longer be welcomed back to her father’s house if she agrees to help him. Bc her father is a self righteous clergyman. So she has to ask for a staggering sum of money. But then he DOUBLES it. I love that. This next quote is very insightful from a smart woman: “I avoid feeling embarrassed as a general rule….Embarrassment as an emotion usually says more about the embarrassee than the embarasser….Embarrassment is just the polite manifestation of uglier emotions: shame regret envy. All things she refused to succumb to.” Yeah they are staying at Jasmine and lord Timothy Linwood’s house!! He is like an uncle to their three children!! I love this. I love them they are so cute together. I love that fossi is the most brilliant singer he has ever heard. mind blowing belting good. And she is a humbly dressed mathmsticion. “Your brilliance is a thing of beauty” I love these flirting lessons sooo much!!!! And then the transformation of wearing fitting beautiful dresses and hair done reveal to Daniel!!! Awwwwwww. She descended the stairs and he did a double take at the beauty before him and it was FOSSIE. “Daniel felt like he was witnessing a metamorphosis. FOSSIE emerging from her cocoon. Or was the metamorphosis his own?” AWW I LOVE THAT WUOTE!! “I am truly nobody.” “Well then I would say nobody is absolutely perfect.” Awww! What a flirty line from my home boy Daniel. But they are genuine friends now. I love that he cares about her and not just her results. And she feels it. But he is falling hard for her. Who is this mysteries past wife Alice to Daniel?? And what does the box have to do with anything??? Nichole is sooo good at mystery. Alice was his wife but she was evil. But the box belonged to Simon his son!!! But Simon died bc he gave him candy from the future he was allergic to. And when he told fossi, she went and gave him a hug. She held him!! And they cried together. When he gave Simon the candy from the future and prematurely killed him the portal broke b of the and earthquake. So he needs to fix the portal and go back in time and fix everything. He doesn’t think Simon’s death wa supposed to happen. But if he goes back in time and not give him the candy, then he would never meet fossi!!! So sad. But then Jasmine won’t be sick anymore bc she has been sick ever since then too. And they can’t see their family! He gave her a shawl for a gift. I love that! She can wrap herself in it and feel like he is holding her. Yeah Georgianna and Sebastian came to the ball! Sebastian had some great dad jokes haha. But that meant he missed the waltz he promised fossi. “Any woman can be beautiful from the outside in. But it took much more for a person to be beautiful from the inside out. Foster Lovejoy was beautiful from the outer tips of her toes to her inner most soul.” And they danced together in the moonlight. And then he told her about the time portal. And how he is choosing his son over her. Bc he is going to fix it and then go back two years and they won’t know each other. But she will fix it anyway bc she loves him so much she will sacrifice herself! Bawling. And then she angry kisses him!! And then he takes control and he says he loves when she angry kisses him! Awww what a fantastic kiss! But now Jasmine collapsed and they are in desperation mode with poor Timothy cradling his wife. They made it!! But now they can’t get back. The time portal is making him let Simon his son go. Losing a child isn’t “hard” losing a job is “hard”. This is “hell”. I am crying for him!!! “You can’t have joy without pain” “life isn’t pain, it is joy! But you can’t have one without the other.” But he just needs to let Simon go. He is in a super super happy place. Letting him go and living joyfully is for YOU Daniel. Use Christ!!! It’s the only way! And then she could fix the portal by sacrificing herself!! And she did it for Daniel!! But then he rushed in and held her and told her he loved her as she was fading away! AWWWWWWW WHYYYYYY CRYING!! So many emotions!!! He decided then he couldn’t live a life without fossi!! And then they went to this other worldly time moment and I feel like he had a moment with God and felt that joy only He can bring, the joy and peace that comes from turning to Him and trusting in Him that your boy Simon is happy and in His hands. That his path is with Fossi now. And they are happy and MARRIED and have another beautiful baby George. I love it!!! I just need an epilogue with everyone meeting at the portal for a reunion again!!! Please!!!!! But seriously that was the best ending in a book. The best illusion to Alma the younger or Paul feeling the light of Christ and being forgiven! That was the best Christian comparison in her book ever. Like I felt the spirit. The joy that comes because of Christ atonement that we can be with our families for eternity. That yes life has hardships and trials but without them we couldn’t feel joy. Bc joy comes from loving people and that comes with the risk of losing them. But our pain can be swallowed up in Christ! He knows what will bring ultimate joy! You just need perspective. Ugh I love this. The book was a perfect example of what Christs atonement can do in our lives. And about how this life is about joy AND the plan of salvation!!! Like LITERALLY.
Wow. Nichole Van's writing is amazing. I've read book #2 of Brothers Maledetti book (Love's Shadow) and this book is my second venture into her writing. Definitely worth reading.
Outshine (and all the House of Oak series, it seems) is a somewhat historical novel, though it has contemporary writing and thoughts. The writing itself is amazing and it sucks you right into the storyline from page one. It's written in third person but the characters and their emotions are so touchable and real that it almost feels like first person narrative. The dialogue is witty and clever, the characters are so easy to fall in love with, the plot is tightly woven and intricate, and the pace of the book is quite fast. I don't particularly subscribe to the idea of time being an ocean with concentric rings intersecting and threads being woven together, but my disagreement did not detract from my enjoyment of the book.
Daniel is nineteen century Superman/Batman/James Bond all rolled into one swoon-worthy hero who is suffering from his past mistakes. Fossi is a brilliant but under-appreciated mathematician and spinster doomed to live a non-existent life with her controlling father. Enter into the story a malfunctioning time portal, a tragic motivator for Daniel to get that said portal fixed, a meeting of minds and hearts, wonderful cameo appearances of characters from previous books in the series.....and you have a book worth reading. I didn't read the previous four books in the series but was able to follow the plot without any problems, so this book can definitely be read as a stand-alone.
I received a copy of this book from EBooksForReview in exchange for my honest opinion. A favorable review was not required. All thoughts and comments are solely my own.
Wow, I'm not quite sure what I expected when I picked up this book, but this was not it. Holy Cow! I loved this book!
I loved the whole feeling of the book. It's set in the regency era, so there are an awful lot of rules and Fossi has kind of broken a lot of them. She's already passed marriagable age. She has the audacity to be smart and to like math and worse, she wants to make sure that other young women are able to learn as well. I really liked her. I liked that she went from being this kind of mousy, quiet young woman, to really knowing what she wanted and reaching out to grab it.
I liked Lord Whitmoor, Daniel, also. I liked the way he kept secrets that even the reader doesn't figure out until almost the very end of the book. He's a spy, but he's getting a bit bored with his line of work. He knows that he needs to be able to correct a wrong (I'm not going to tell you, this is one of the big secrets!), and he needs a super smart math whiz. I loved the he assumed it was a man, and that he really overlooked Fossi because she was a woman. That was a really funny scene!
I loved watching these two characters together. Their flirting and just the way they were together made me laugh in several places.
I liked the whole plot. I liked that there was the regency era, but it's also a bit of a time travel story. So. Much. Fun! And this is the last of a series, but I had no problem following anything that happened. It does a great job standing on it's own. I really need to read the rest now! Go get your own copy!
Third read through…man I am glad I reread this. I thought I had only read this one once. Again there were a lot of things I didn’t remember. This is more sad than the other books in this series.
Just finished re-reading this book which ends this lovely house of Oak series! There were a lot of things I didn’t remember in this one. I like the characters but they are more serious and there aren’t as many funny parts in this book as the others in this series. I love Fossi though! She is a great character. I am sad I am done re-reading these! They are so light and fun! It was a great escape from the real world for me!
Even though this is Book 5 of the series, it is a standalone. It is the only book I've read in the series, but I'm pretty sure it won't be the last!
I knew right from the beginning I was going to love Fossi. In regency England no person is more UNmarriageable than a plain, aging, poor, CLEVER woman - and unfortunately for her, Fossi is all of those. But when it appears that Daniel Ashton, Lord Whitmoor has pilfered her mathematical theorem, Fossi leaves her comfort zone to travel to London to confront him.
