The story is back on track, but darkness is still creeping down the yellow brick road. With danger hot on her heels, Dorothy finally gets her chance to see Oz. Will their meeting really be everything she’s been hoping for? Something about this feels familiar, like a book from her childhood–the one where the wizard was a fraud.
I enjoyed how this manga keeps content from the original story but adds a twist to it that keeps it interesting and modernises it. They even included something that I had totally forgotten about (the Golden Cap and the three wishes)!
I really like Nick's character, how different and thoughtful he is compared to the boisterous and dramatic nature of the others. I also liked seeing how 'the darkness' affected the regular people living in Oz. That created a depth to the world.
In this volume, Dorothy regains her childhood memories however, we don't learn the full extent or meaning of those memories. One consequence is that Dorothy tells her companions the truth. I thought the idea was cool although, I felt the boys dealt with the news way too casually.
Something else I found intriguing is Oz's backstory and the beginnings of the world. I can't wait to learn more about that.
One thing I’m worried about is that I still have quite a few questions and I’m not sure if they will all be answered by the end of the series…
So for me, this installment wasn't as exciting as the previous, and I found myself feeling a little confused as to what was actually meant to be happening. The characters kind of blended into one another, and I had to flick back a bit to give myself a reminder. Since there is one installment left to read, I'll probably finish it, but I hope they pull something out of the bag here to jazz things up a bit.
Aestus, the Wicked Witch (or rather warlock) of the West has been playing a dangerous game and the world will never be the same.
With the darkness following the journey of Dorothy and her companions there is much danger in Oz as measures must be taken to save as many citizens from the emptiness that seems to consume everything it comes in contact with. In the mean time Dorothy is set to become a pawn in a plan to possibly stop darkness from consuming all of Oz. Manipulations of feelings, rumors, and magic will test Oz as the series reaches for the final volume and hopefully all the answers are laid bare. :)
By the way I like that although this series loosely bases the characters and story on the original book that it still has elements of the book including a chance to see the various transformations of Oz. Of course it is not the original retelling so even Dorothy is starting to remember the story and making connections to what fate may have in store for them.
I really am a sucker for both metafiction and mis-en-abyme, and this series is increasingly delivering both in a story that is far more intelligent than expected.
I really liked the different interpretation of this story. It takes a tale we all know so well, The Wizard of Oz, and spins it in a different way, without falling into Wicked territory and staying fresh and original. The art is gorgeous and detailed, and the characters are intriguing--what is Oz's relationship to Dorothy? Why were the witches chosen for their roles? Why is the Darkness following Dorothy and her friends?
My main issue is that the story can be a bit hard to follow if you come into the next volume after several months of waiting for its release. The beautiful characters start to blend into one another a little--you pretty much need to go back and skim the first two volumes so you can remember which Bishounen is which.
I just noticed Locasta’s Pegasus had webbed feet and oh my gosh it’s hideous. I did not expect Leon to be the one to develop a crush on Dorothy, but I guess it makes sense (even if Nicholas is my favorite). Leon’s lion version has such big ears that it’s not even cute, it’s creepy. I can’t believe there was actually a gay character in this series, but it seemed more like an obsession or lust rather than love. I hope all of the plot isn’t shoved into the last volume.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
The plot thickens and while I really enjoyed this volume I’m concerned about how all my questions can be answered in the final volume. Hopefully they wrap it all up satisfactorily.
