"Even smart people we admire had beliefs we can't understand today. They did things that we know are wrong and shameful. Owning slaves is one of those things."
Lauren Tarshis does an extraordinarily fine job of describing the Civil War era of 1861-1865, those four long years of bloodshed and 750,000 lives lost in her 7th I SURVIVED book.
Gettysburg was one of the bloodiest battles fought with 51,000 dead, but an important one as it changed the course of the war in favor of the Union's North.
In this historical work of fiction, the characters are imagined, but what happened to them as slaves is true as are the dates, settings, Generals and President names.
At the end of this novella, Tarshis takes the reader on an imagined journey back to Gettysburg to hear our 16th president, Abraham Lincoln, who fought to put an end to slavery, read The Gettysburg Address.
The I SURVIVED series is an informative children's series that I am unexpectedly really enjoying.
