A Poison Dark and Drowning

"Devastatingly magical and monstrously romantic. I can't decide if this book stole my heart or ripped it out of my chest." —Stephanie Garber, author of Caraval

The magicians want her to lead.
The sorcerers want her to lie.
The demons want her blood.
Henrietta wants to save the one she loves.
But will his dark magic be her undoing?

In this seductive and explosive second book in the Kingdom on Fire series, Jessica Cluess delivers her signature mix of magic, passion, and teen warriors fighting for survival. Hand to fans of Victoria Aveyard, Sarah J. Maas, and Kiersten White.

Henrietta doesn't need a prophecy to know that she's in danger. She came to London to be named the chosen one, the first female sorcerer in centuries, the one who would defeat the Ancients. Instead, she discovered a city ruled by secrets. And the biggest secret of Henrietta is not the chosen one.

Still, she...

This series is so underrated! It has sorcerers, magicians, and witches, all with different types of magic. It has Fae. It has multiple love interests (which some might find annoying but I don’t mind) that will each appeal to different people. All of its characters have a dark edge to them. It has ancient monsters from another dimension. It has magical artifacts. It has found family father figure feels. This series appeals to me on so many levels, even with its flaws, and I’m interested to see what the finale brings.

This book WIPED ME TF OUT.

Think the movie sequel rule of BIGGER BADDER AWESOMER BLOODIER CRYINGER.

I need to formulate an actual review in my brain but it's mushy and I'm like ????? I guess??????

This one made me love Henrietta more but not necessarily anyone else *stares directly into the souls of all men in this book*

"People do what they think is right, but that does not make it good."

Bloody, magical, monstrous, romantic and utterly heartbreaking. This book takes everything we loved from the first book and elevates it. All the stakes are raised, relationships are tested, secrets revealed, And, we are forever reminded that the demons of our pasts never truly stay buried.

The book was well-paced and beautifully written, pushing the borders of right and wrong, with almost all sides coming out looking pretty gray.

How I felt throughout this entire book

The Relationships

Rook & Henrietta
You know what I think my problem with Rook as a love interest is? He's got absolutely no personality! Like all we know about him is that he's Henrietta's childhood friend; he's handsome, supposedly nice and he'll basically do whatever Henrietta wants him to. Rook gets zero character development, so he was about as interesting as a cardboard cutout. The only interesting thing about him is the darkness taking over him, but we did not see much of that. Other than him constantly having to take medication for it, and Henrietta saying how worried she was about him. It was basically the same scene on replay every time.

We are constantly told by Henrietta how much she loves Rook, but I never really feel it. And every time it comes up, she basically just mentions how they've always been to together. I don't think that is reason enough to be in love with someone.

Magnus & Howel
From beginning to end, Magnus clearly still has feelings for Howel. And while they do have their moments, it is quite clear that Howel no longer sees him as a viable option. She still cares for him deeply, but with everything going on around her, Howel makes it clear that she just wants him as a friend. And Magnus truly does everything he can to respect that, even if it wounds him so.

Henrietta & Maria
Almost from the moment they met, these two just clicked. They obviously recognized something in each other and there was an easy camaraderie. When all Henrietta secrets began were bursting at the seems, Maria is the person she turned to. She trusted her above everyone else. By books end, it was clear these two were going to take their world by storm.

Blackwood & Howel
"I don't have to tell you all the secrets," I said primly, fluffing my skirt.
"Pity. I'd like to know them."

Little did I know, this was foreshadowing for their relationship for almost the entirety of the book. I kid you not.

At the start of the book, it seemed as though they were in a great place, they depended on and trusted each other.
Without thinking, I rested my hand on top of Blackwood's. He slipped his fingers through mine for an instant.
---
"Heavens, imagine what a lost lamb I would be without a strong young man guiding me, I muttered.
"I always pictured you as more of a kid goat," Blackwood said. "Always butting heads." Despite everything going on, I couldn't help but smile.
---
"How did you know I'd be reading in here?" I immediately snatched up some of the gingerbread.
"You always read in the evenings. I know you too well."
"Oh? I must be very dull."
Blackwood considered this a moment. "No. I believe I like anticipating you."
"Am I that easy to predict?" I blew on the chocolate and sipped.
"I like a good routine."

But as the book progressed it was obvious that Henrietta still clearly had major trust issues. Once again Henrietta's lies and secrets piled up, one after the other, and this was obviously a huge strain on their relationship. And is the cause of many misunderstandings between them. Even still, it struck me as almost absurd that Henrietta never truly acknowledges or understands how much Blackwood loves her.
"When I had your friendship, I thought I could never want for anything more. But over time, I have come to feel for you beyond anything I thought I could."
---
"I would do most anything to make you happy, Howel, if you'd let me. I would become your servant, lay whatever you wanted at your feet."

At the end, even after everything they went through she still questioned his intentions, thinking he was keeping secrets to hold on to his power.
Image and video hosting by TinyPic
When really, it seems, all he cares to hold onto is her. Like girl, this man would die for you, stop being so blind.

But despite it all I still love them. These two are everything. Blackwood is so irrevocably in love with Howel.
"Despite everything - your lies, your wounds, I cannot help but love you. I'm helpless against it."
And while she may try to deny it, in the deepest parts of her soul I think a part of her loves him too.
Destiny lay in his touch as he cupped a cool hand under my chin. Something dark that slept inside me stirred, opened one eye. It was as though a secret part of my soul had been designed for his.

This had some pretty unexpected twists and turns. I cannot wait for more books in the series to find out what happens with Henrietta. I thoroughly enjoyed this installment! I forgot what my rating was for the first installment (think four stars) but this one was a bit better but that could be because we know most of the characters already.

Overall, an intriguing fantasy that answers some questions from book one but also leaves more to be answered for the next book!

"Despite everything - your lies, your wounds, I cannot help but love you. I'm helpless against it."

guys I'm so conflicted with this book. I read it in two sittings. there was so much stuff that I'm truly unhappy about but deep down I can't bring myself to hate this book - and some parts I loved so much that I am now as usual an ugly mush of emotions.

im gonna try a different style of review and see how it goes okay

Overall:
I think these books are weaved together with elements from a lot of other books that I've read: Magic and the "Chosen One" (Harry Potter), Faerie and Courts (Shadowhunter), Brooding Handsome Rich Dude (Pride and Prejudice), A Lonely Dude that likes power and just wants to be loved (Grisha Trilogy- The Darkling), Childhood love (too many to list), Heroine who only wish for one thing for their loved one and doesn't care about anything else (ACOTAR), Peasant girl transformed into a Lady living in mansions and wear pretty gowns but feels an outcast (The Hunger Games)... want me to list on? The plot is original by all means with all the monsters and shit but is it really really original and not just some weird mashup of fanfics? I won't be the judge for that.

Relationships grew between characters maybe except for one particular dude, and the more and more I read into Henrietta, the more she annoys me and I truly just wish she ends up alone because all she's been doing is thinking she's all that and it's her goddamn destiny to save the world because every goddamn thing is her fault and YAH GOOD THINKING BUDDY YOU GONNA DO THAT AND KILL EVERYONE ELSE IN THE PROCESS. BRILLIANT! I'm so on board with this.

Then why I rated it with such high rating? you may ask - you right, I shouldn't rate it that high if I hated the main character that much right? Nah uh, it's true I ain't the biggest fan of Henrietta here - BUT, I did enjoyed nearly everything else, and the side cast saved all the stars tbh.

"I would do most anything to make you happy, Howel, if you'd let me. I would become your servant, lay whatever you wanted at your feet."

Likes:
- George Blackwood
- Maria - she's the gem, and I love her, I wish she is the main character and not Henrietta 100% offence intended but I really don't give a shit about Henrietta at the rate and way she's going
- George bloody Blackwood - he reminds me so much of The Darkling and in my universe I WANT HIM to be end game truth to be told though: my baby deserves much better than Henrietta
- Eliza and Magnus plotting their way through to get them out of and into sticky situations and I love them
- Magnus reminds me of Will Herondale and he deserves happiness
- that one flashback scene was done very well I liked
- Blacky, his sharped jawline and fascinating green eyes. fucking swoon.
- so many potential ships that although they hurt my head - I'm 100% on board with Dee and Lily
- The writing is good! The main reason other than the only reason that I continued with this book is because the writing was so captivating!
- Blackwood - did I mention I am trash for lonesome, dark brooding souls with pretty eyes and dark hair?
- the gruesome monsters (I actually love those bloody and slimy details)
- The twists and turns of the story (though some were too predictable)
- The ending wasn't a cliffhanger thank fuck.

"People do what they think is right, but that does not make it good"

Dislikes:
- Henrietta Howel
- The predictable-ness of the plot (it was so predictable that I wanna cri)
- the lies/deception between friends (it's demoralising to see the group keep so much secrets from one another)
- I mean Henrietta has her own 'reasons' for the way she's acting but that doesn't give her the excuse to get away with things - she needs to start learning from her mistakes from lying and actually do some good for once.
- I think deep down Henrietta wishes she was the chosen one
- Did I mention how dumb and reckless Henrietta is? sigh
- There were prospect of an epic sequel with the romances not 'set in stone' too early so I have a very bad feeling about book 3 and my ship is DEFINITELY gonna sink *touches wood*.
- I think Henrietta still hasn't learn from any of her mistakes since book 1 and it aggravates my soul wait I have a soul?
- like I said before many of the elements were all seen in a lot of popular YA books and I hope more originality would be thrown into the mix in book 3 if i happen to get that for free somehow
- I probably have heaps more dislikes up in the dark pits of my brain but I'll stop for now

Bottom line:
It's a better book than the first book so don't give up entirely if you didn't enjoy book 1 as much as you did (just like me). I might have to ask around once book 3 is out and see if my ship sailed 'cause otherwise I may have to drop this series sigh.

Okay, I will admit that I was a little nervous to start this book. I was nervous because I had a lot of feelings from the last book, mainly regarding Blackwood, and I was not sure how it was going to play out in this book. However, as soon as I started this book, I knew this was going to be a good one. The author did a great job at keeping my attention throughout the entire book. I thought the plot was really addictive and interesting. I couldn't stop reading it! There were some predictable storylines, but I thought it was great overall. THIS WAS SUCH A PLEASANT SURPRISE FOR ME. I REALLY FREAKING ENJOYED THIS BOOK.

One thing I felt like I was missing from the first book was action and tons of magic. I felt like the first book focused a lot on practicing magic, which was really interesting, but I was dying for more. This book DELIVERED on that aspect. I loved how the magic element was still present and important, but there was more action to keep the book moving. The author really increased the stakes in this book and I felt a sense of dread for the characters. I WAS ALWAYS SO WORRIED ABOUT THEM. I FELT LIKE THEY COULD HAVE DIED AT ANY MOMENT AND I WAS NOT EMOTIONALLY PREPARED FOR THAT.

Henrietta was a badass in this book, which made my heart so happy. I was so proud of her whenever she used her powers and kicked the butts of the villains. I loved her curiosity and her desire to protect those around her. She has a huge heart and it really tugged at my heartstrings when she was worried about the people she cared about. I will say that I thought she made a few dumb decisions and was a little slow to catch onto some obvious things. Actually, a lot of the characters were kind of dumb in this book. I felt like some of the answers to the mysteries in this book were so obvious, and it pained me that the characters couldn't see the obvious answers. However, I still really love the characters. Especially my baby, Blackwood. BLACKWOOD IS LIKE MR. DARCY SO YOU CAN'T EXPECT ME NOT TO LOVE HIM. IT IS SERIOUSLY IMPOSSIBLE. I WILL MARRY BLACKWOOD ANYTIME, ANY DAY.

The romance in this book got me HEATED. There were multiple love interests in this book for Henrietta in this book, and I was not for two of them. I have had my ship since book one AND I AM GOING DOWN WITH THIS SHIP. Magnus was a funny and charming character, but I never felt the romantic connection between him and Henrietta. I was glad that Henrietta addressed their romance early in the book. The romance between Rook and Henrietta annoyed me. I am a huge supporter of friends to lovers tropes, but Rook just never pulled me in as a character. I just really don't want them together because I feel like they are better off as just friends. I guess that makes it obvious that I ship Henrietta and Blackwood, AND I DO NOT REGRET IT. THEY ARE MEANT TO BE TOGETHER. THE OTHER MEN NEED TO LEAVE THE PICTURE BECAUSE MY SHIP IS ENDGAME.

Overall, this was a really fun and mesmerizing book! I CANNOT wait to see what happens in book three. BRING IT ON!!!

Jessica Cluess, no me decepciones.

I was lucky enough to receive a beautiful signed ARC of this masterpiece. Thank you, Jessica Cluess, for sending me a copy of this book! My opinions are entirely my own.

I looooooooved A Shadow Bright and Burning, but A Poison Dark and Drowning blew me away. The stakes were raised, the characters grew, the twists were endless and the action was gripping! Cluess knocked it out of the park as far as sequels go. It's very rare for me to enjoy a sequel as much, let alone MORE than the original, but Cluess managed with grace and verve.

Under Cluess's able pen, the magical cast of characters grew and unfurled, each with their own arcs. I love Henrietta's growth, and I especially love that Henrietta is able to maintain her agency throughout the book, despite many swoony overtures thrown her way and more than a handful of heartbreaking twists. The old characters will continue to surprise and adore you, the new will enthrall you! I especially love the addition of a certain spunky witch and the friendship that blossoms between her and Henrietta. I'm a sucker for books with positive, healthy friendships, and this book sure didn't disappoint.

Overall, this book is twisty and action-packed, swoon-worthy and romantic. I definitely recommend this beauty to fans of the historical fantasy in The Dark Days Club, the swoony romance of Caraval, and the gripping action and determined heroine of Rebel of the Sands.

Since it has been almost two years since I dove into the first book, I'm actually surprised that I didn't forget that much. I also didn't think it would be possible to fall even more in love with Henrietta's character. So, in other words, I'm really happy that A Poison Dark and Drowning didn't fall victim to the second book syndrome.

Honestly a lot was revealed in this book. So much more than I anticipated. Which is probably why I devoured this book so freaking quickly. It was very hard to put down and walk away from. Jessica did a great job with upping the everything factor because this went out with a bang. I'm not even sure what the next book will bring me and I don't even know how to prepare for it.

Besides getting whiplash, this book definitely gave some good twists. I also don't even know what shape we are in for the romance but that's definitely a backburner for me. I'm just in awe of everything else that was happening. Again, not sure what the third and final book will bring me but I hope it goes out with an even bigger bang than this one.

In the end, I am slightly disappointed in myself for waiting so long to dive into this book and I hope it doesn't take me another 2 years to dive into the next one.

I don’t know why I took so long to read this one. I had enjoyed the first book and jumped into this one without a fresher of any kind.

I still like Henrietta. She means well, but maybe doesn’t go about doing things in the best way. I didn’t care for her lying and believing that she knew the best way to do everything. I really liked the addition of Maria and look forward to seeing what she brings to the last book. And of course the many many boys were delightful.

Plot wise, it did get a bit repetitive here and there. There were some great reveals, shocks, and answers, but it still left quite a set up for the next book. I’m eager to see how everything plays out.

Overall, it was a solid second book that kept me entertained. Now, when’s book 3 out?

A POISON DARK AND DROWNING is a romantic and action-packed adventure and just so much fun to read.

I am utterly addicted to the magical version of Victorian England that Jessica Cluess has crafted in this series, and it was an absolute pleasure to return to it in this novel.

I really enjoyed this second book in the Kingdom on Fire series. Where A SHADOW BRIGHT AND BURNING really focused on character development and Henrietta's growing power, A POISON DARK AND DROWNING is much more plot-driven and action-packed, and because of that, I enjoyed it a lot more than book one.

I also was happy to see that the magic system was more fully developed in this book. My biggest complaint in book one was that the magic felt almost too convenient at times, but that wasn't the case in this book. The system felt fully fleshed out and much more believable.

The characters in these books do tend to be pretty cookie cutter, but at the same time, most of them are also very entertaining.

The romance did fall a little flat for me. I feel like these books have so much potential for great romance, and I'm really keeping my fingers crossed for book three. The Henrietta/Rook romance just doesn't have much of a spark to it, and while I was thrilled to see the relationship between Henrietta/Blackwood developing further, it lacked some of the emotion I was hoping for.

I love what Cluess did with the plot of this novel. The pacing is fantastic and there are some great twists along the way. The ending is unexpected in the best way and left me eagerly awaiting the next book.

Overall I did really like this book. I honestly didn't want to put it down, and I will most definitely be picking up the next book in the series.

I received an advanced copy of this book thanks to netgalley and I was happy to read it. I already enjoyed the first one whom I found really good but A poison dark and drowning was so much better!! What can I say? The plot was fantastic as well as the revelations. The book kept me on edge, some of the revelations were unexpected and I was surprised!! The pace was really good too, there is always something to discover and the danger is never far behind. It was well done and Jessica Cluess wrote a flawless second book. What I loved the most was what we learn about the magic, the Ancients's World, how to destroy it, if it is even possible or not. The book is really strong for a sequel and I'm happy for that! I also enjoyed the characters, it was a pleasure to be with Henrietta, Blackwood, Magnus and the others once more. The bond between Henrietta and the boys grew stronger, they formed a real team. Henriatta is this kind of girl who never give up, she is brave, fierce but also sensitive and always here for her friends. Her world is complicated and we learn some very interesting things about her! Even if he is kind of cold, always searching for control, I have a little crush for Blackwood who is very charismatic. On the contrary, I was disappointed by Rook but well, I didn't like him in the first book either. In conclusion, Cluess wrote a solid second book with strong characters and a plot well imagined. Waiting for the next book now!

I'm never sure how to review second and third books in trilogies, because of the potential spoiler factor for the first book.

I enjoyed this second installment in this series all right, but it lacked the magic the first book had for me. Where the first one seemed to turn so many standard fantasy elements on their heads, this book felt much more typical fantasy, with too many familiar elements feeling just plain too familiar. Which under normal circumstances would have been fine, but I just had different expectations because of how much the first book surprised me.

Still, this wasn't bad by any means; it was just disappointing relative to my very high hopes and expectations. I'm still very much on board for reading the conclusion to this trilogy when it comes out.

I was hooked to the story-line and the characters right from the start, just like I was in the first book. I’ve re-read the first book before starting this sequel, so that also helped a lot I think – I was completely and utterly lost inside this world after my re-read of book 1 so starting book 2 right after was such a joy! Everything was just as amazingly written this time around as it was in the first book and I couldn’t get enough of it yet again.

+ The magic is further explored, and the Ancients unfurl ever more grotesque horror into this world.
+ Secondary characters introduced in the first book whom I came to love rather fiercely, begin to develop their own storylines in this sequel and I love that development so much because I fell hard for the characters in book 1. The characters were yet again nothing short of amazing and some of the characters development throughout this book was phenomenal!
+ action! SO MUCH action in this book
+ the settings keep being nothing short of amazing as well which is thanks to the amazing writing skills of the author. The writing is extremely well done. It feels like you’re in this world yourself, seeing it all happen right in front of your eyes. One of the great strengths of Cluess’ writing is her ability to plot out a truly complicated fictional world and makes me really believe in it. Her magical England in this Victorian Setting is absolutely stunning, dangerous, exciting and enthralling to read about. Once you get to know this world in the first book you won’t get enough and this sequel is even darker than the first book which is so awesome I think!

“THE PLOT TWISTS IN THIS BOOK MESSED
ME UP IN THE BEST WAY POSSIBLE.
AWESOME, SO FREAKING AWESOME!”

There are some major twists in the story and THEY.BLEW.ME.AWAY-BOOM!. Just like the first book, the author knows how to surprise me yet again in this sequel as well and I love, love, LOVE it! So yeah, I’d say; be prepared but I honestly don’t think there’s any way to prepare yourself for some of the things that’ll happen *insert evil laugh*

Middle book syndrome?

This second book did kinda feel like it’s a book with that well-known ‘middle book syndrome’ thing going on though; with a lot of build-ups for the third book present for example. Having finished this second book now and looking back on my reading experience:: I started reading this book with a feeling that I would’ve liked it if all of it was written as a duology and having it all completed in this book. BUT! having read the whole book now I’m really happy there’s a third one – really happy. Especially in the last 25% of the book, there’s just so much happening – OMFG – and I really can’t wait to read all about it in another full-length novel.

But the major reason I didn’t give this sequel 5 stars, was because of the romance development in this book. The changes of the romance elements involving Henrietta didn’t always feel reliable and believable to me because there’s a lot of change throughout the book and sometimes it was a bit too much I think. There are definitely moments in the book that had me swooning and sighing and of course, I’ve developed a lot of feelings for every character in this book and especially someone, in particular, I’d like to see Henrietta end up with. So maybe that’s why I didn’t feel a lot for the romance developments in this book because I was frustrated that so much change happened haha. But alas, I’ll keep my hopes up for the next installment… – wishful thinking never did anybody harm, did it? Lol.

MY CONCLUSION

“Jessica Clues created such an amazing,
magical and dark world that set my heart on fire
and it continued doing so in this second installment
of the Kingdom on Fire series. Simply amazing!”

Aside from the romance not being everything I’d hoped it’d be, the rest of the books is just really really good and an amazing follow up on the first book. Despite the fact you know this second book is a build-up to the grand finale, the last installment of the trilogy, there’s still so much happening on the side that makes sure you don’t get bored for one second even though this IS a book with that well-known middle-book-syndrome.

The writing may be even a bit more ‘bold’ I daresay, when I think back on how Jessica described some fighting events; just whoa… I mean, the ‘monsters’ were already creepy and such but some scenes were dark, brutal and so vividly written it gave me goosebumps and I loved it so much! I really liked seeing this growth in writing and growth of the story in general. I like it when authors explore even more darker settings/situations.

This book took the main story in several unexpected directions – like I said; the plot twists were A-MA-ZING! So much so that I’m not sure how the story can be rebound to anything like a happy ending with just one book to go. But I can’t wait to find out!!! If you loved a Shadow bright and Burning, you are going to love it’s sequel as well, I promise!

I don't know how to feel about this book.

I really enjoyed A Shadow Bright and Burning when I read it last year, and I couldn't wait to get my hands on the next one. This series has everything I love: magic, demons, romance and the Victorian era. I devoured book one, and read book two just as quickly, but sadly didn't enjoy it as much.

Middle-book syndrome, perhaps? For much of the book, it seems as though nothing really happens - a classic symptom of the dreaded middle-book syndrome. The romance became rather tiresome. What is it now, a love square? A love hexagon? Who even knows. Rook, arguably the main love interest, was deathly dull and bland. He literally had no personality whatsoever, his only character traits were that he was Henrietta's childhood best friend and he was Unclean. That was it. Magnus was wonderful and hilarious, but it's clear Henrietta only sees him as a friend and nothing more. In the first book and the first half of this one, Blackwood was my absolute favourite out of the countless love interests, but towards the end he started to become really dominating and controlling, and started to kind of scare me. Possessiveness is not sexy, people.

Henrietta was quite frustrating at times - she seemed very fickle with the boys she liked. One minute she was declaring her undying love for Rook, the next she was getting all turned on and wanting to smooch Blackwood. Still, I really like how she subverts the Chosen One trope, and her flaws make her seem more like a real person than a stock-perfect-YA-heroine.

Still, despite its flaws, there were parts I did thoroughly enjoy. I love and as soon as Maria turned up I was basically in love. I loved her friendship with Henrietta - double fucking YES for non-competitive girl-friendships who support each other and keep each other's secrets! Honestly, I would just be happy if Henrietta ditched all her boys and eloped with Maria. They would make an awesome lesbian super-couple.

The magic system is really entertaining, with the differences in the hierarchy of the sorcerers, magicians and witches. Some of the Ancients were super freaking scary. Specifically Nemneris, that freaky spider bitch. I hate spiders.

Mickelmas is probably my favourite character after Maria. He is just so funny, every time he popped up in a scene out of nowhere I was already smiling.

I'm still most likely going to read book three! Here's hoping Henrietta sorts out what the heck she wants, Blackwood doesn't go power mad and turns back into the boy I loved in the first book, and Maria continues to kick ass.

*My Thoughts*

A Poison Dark and Drowning is the second installment in author Jessica Cluess' Kingdom on Fire series. Henrietta Howell came to London thinking she would become the so called Chosen One. The first female sorcerer in a century, and the one prophesied to lead the sorcerers to defeat the fabled 7 Ancients. She's the first female to be inducted into the Royal Order by Queen Charlotte, and played a key part in the defeating Korozoth, the Shadow and Fog. But, she's also a formidable Magician having trained in secret while also fulfilling her other obligations to Queen and country.

This book is full of twists, and by the end, we’d reached a point that I just did not expect. As this is a sequel, I’m going to indulge myself a bit and focus on the only thing I really care about in this series––the love mess of three suitors. Sure, there’s a great story behind it, but if you’re considering reading the sequel, you’ve already read the first and probably already know if you want to continue. So I’m going to focus on the only element that would make a difference in whether I’d continue in the series. The story already had me hooked, but the love mess can be a frustrating element.

An assessment of our love interests, listed according to favorites––spoilers ahead!

Rook’s journey is absolutely heartbreaking. He begins embracing his powers, finally seeing himself as an equal for Henrietta. But his powers are connected to the darkness they’re trying to defeat, and they bring out the darkness within Rook. Henrietta fights to rescue him, but most of his story is a downward spiral. It seems as though he’s been doomed since the beginning when he became an Unclean––as if his end was inevitable. He’s fully transitioned into the tragic character, and I don’t see a way for him to return, though I’d be thrilled if Cluess turns his arc around. If there was one word to describe his role for Henrietta, it’d be “home.” It feels right with him, but it’d hard to tell if her destiny is to return home or to leave the nest. There’s also symmetry in their stories as by the end, Henrietta is also an Unclean. Oddly enough, this is the one thing giving me hope for Rook’s salvation, because how our heroine has her own hint of doom. If her story can turn around, I’m hoping the same can happen for Rook. It’d be a hard twist to orchestrate though. I feel like I'm on a doomed Rook cheer squad.

Magnus gets some heartbreak of his own this round. He has his own loss, and there’s hints that he’s sacrificing his own happiness for those that he loves. He seems less like a cad this time, as there appears to be a reason why he was such a player in the last book. He’s still magnetic in his own way, but Magnus and Henrietta spend the story on different wavelengths. There’s no progress for *them* but there’s progress for *him.* His character deepens, becomes more multifaceted. I’d say his one word to describe his role for Henrietta would be “fire,” though during this book, it’s more like a slow-burning ember. There’s potential for fireworks when they’re on the same page. Time will tell if he burns out or becomes an inferno. Right now though, it feels like signs are pointed towards this fella as our ultimate winner in the game of suitors. Ladies and gents, we have a contender!

Blackwood.. I just don’t trust this dude. I can’t deny the sparks between them––he’s got the whole super-intense possessive aura––but I don’t like their foundations. They understand each other very well, but Blackwood hasn’t opened himself up for many relationships. He’s guarded to the extreme. He opens up to Henrietta, finds that he can trust her, and so for him that automatically that means they should be together. He decides to bypass the dating phase entirely in order to nail down the first girl who’s shown him any compassion. Maybe if he’d quit being so guarded, he’d realize that there’s a whole ocean of fish out there and he doesn’t have to settle down with the first one. He also has a darkness within him that’s totally different from Rook’s. Rook’s is like a supernatural parasite. Blackwood’s is born out of ambition and a desire for power. And his lust for Henrietta is also partly due to his greed for being as powerful as possible, as they’d be the ultimate power-couple. By the end of the book––a twist I could not foreshadow––Henrietta actually agrees to marry Blackwood. He’ll protect her, and she feels fated due to the whole identical vines on their staves. And marrying him will help her to help the magicians. Seems like loose reasons for marrying, but Rook is lost to the darkness and so she might as well marry the broody lord. His one word for his relationship to Henrietta would be “darkness.” It feels foreboding, and though it can be tempting to relent, it feels like the ultimate destination will be ruinous.

I worried from book one that Rook would be written off as a tragic character. With three different love interests, somehow we’ve got to narrow it down to one, and it makes sense to write one off like this. I’ve been hoping that it’ll turn around for Rook––I still can’t help hoping that it will. In the meantime though, I think I could be content with a Magnus match. I’ve got some sympathy for him, the same kind that I’d have for a begging puppy; I kind of want to give in and give him what he wants. After all, Rook isn’t an option and Magnus is a tempting second best. There’s always Maria as an option to make another happy pairing so that the sympathetic Magnus doesn’t end his story on a sad note, but I don’t recall any signs pointing us in that direction yet. And there’s the potential for twists, so who knows. However, I tend to not like pairing them off just because, so I’m kind of hoping that match doesn’t happen. I don’t see a happy ending for Blackwood. He’s got too much potential as a power-hungry dictator.

Do you have a favorite contender? Let me know!

The follow-up to Jessica Cluess's magical young adult fantasy, A Shadow Bright and Burning (read my review), is equally as compelling and dramatic. A POISON DARK AND DROWNING continues Henrietta Howel's journey in the magical society of the Order, but she harbors a secret to protect her and the man she loves. Unspoken romance, secrets, lies, and tons of magic are just some of what you'll find in this fantasy series.

For me the Kingdom on Fire series isn't one that breaks new ground or blows my mind. But what it might lack, it makes up for in its setting and imagery. While reading this installment, I kept getting Wuthering Heights/Jane Eyre vibes with hints of Harry Potter-esque nods. The marriage of these literary giants was electrifying and so entertaining!

The series turns the heavily used "chosen one" trope on its head. Henrietta may not be the girl brought forth to save the world, but she sure as hell will try. That's what I really liked about her character. In this book, she knows who she is and what she wants and isn't afraid to go after it. Despite what limitations Victorian society places on her as a woman, she defies societal norms and refuses to conform.
“Despite everything - your lies, your wounds, I cannot help but love you. I'm helpless against it.”

I mentioned in my review of the first book that I was excited to see where Cluess took the love triangle. I really liked Blackwood's character—he's sort of like a brooding Mr. Darcy. Rook and Henrietta's storyline is very reminiscent of Healthcliffe and Cathy. Could that comparison foreshadow the future of their relationship? I guess we'll find out in book 3.

While I still hold tight to my prediction on where she'll take the love triangle, I did not like the love square that was a strong plot point in this book. It's clear who Henrietta truly loves and her feelings are unwavering. But then we have Blackwood making his intentions clear and then a third guy who wants a stab at Henrietta's heart. This may not be the series for those who are opposed to this type of romantic journey.

The strong point in this book is the dark and ominous tone against the backdrop of Victorian England and a strong and fearless female heroine. The romantic plot lines in this book definitely have moments that will pull at your heartstrings, but some readers may be frustrated at Henrietta's man magnet abilities.

4.5 stars

Before I read A Poison Dark and Drowning, I reread A Shadow Bright and Burning, which very much held up. These books are just so much fun, with a well-drawn cast and world building/plotting that just keep better. They’re even fun when they stab you in the feels, which A Poison Dark and Drowning very does.

I continue to love the way that Cluess plays with the idea of the Chosen One trope. Now, Henrietta’s pretty sure that she isn’t the chosen one of the prophecy, and she’s really not sure what to do with herself. Also, she’s not sure how to balance being both magician and sorcerer. The girl’s a hot mess basically, but at least she has chemistry with basically every other character. Unfortunately, her lack of security manifests in refocusing on her relationship with Rook, aka mentally rolling back to the last time she knew who she was. Rook continues to just be the worst.

There’s so little I can talk about without spoilers, but MY GOD do I want to talk to people about this book, because I really have no idea what to expect from book three, and it BURNS. View Spoiler » The plot moves at a brisk, unputdownable pace, and absolutely everyone faces massive amounts of pain and terrible choices, which is ideal in a fantasy tbh.

Often, fantasy trilogies struggle with that middle volume, feeling like they’re marking time, drawn out and slow. That absolutely does not happen here. Though it’s Henrietta’s POV, there’s such a strong character arc for her whole crew, which I love. Blackwood, my darling, we need to have a talk. Magnus, my baby, take this gigantic hug. I also absolutely love that the solution for how to defeat their enemies comes with a massive cost. Absolutely nothing comes easily, and it’s beautiful and terrible.

This series continues to improve. Those who loved A Shadow Bright and Burning will be thrilled with this installment (though also in pain), and people who were on the fence may be won over by this new level of intensity.

I didn't think that this series could get better but Jessica Cluess has outdone herself! In A Poison Dark and Drowning she upped the magic, romance, and secrets from A Shadow Bright and Burningand oh my goodness there is some big reveals in this book! It was everything I wanted and more.

It’s hard to really review the book without having to rehash the previous book. Essentially the story is that there are interdimensional monsters that are roaming the Victorian English countryside and the citizens are protected by a league of sorcerers. A Poison Dark and Drowning expands on that premise and tosses out a lot of curve balls too.

Here are the facts:

Are there some deaths? Yep. The pain!!!!!!

Are there feels? HELL YES!

Do we find the real “chosen one?” Yes indeed and its super bad ass!

Do we find out some shocking secrets about Henrietta’s connection with R’hlem? Holy shit… do we ever!

Any resolution on the love square? Sorta? While I was always a team Blackwood shipper, right now I’m side eyeing Blackwood something fierce. I don’t think he’s too far gone but there’s definitely “something rotten in the state of Denmark” here.

In the end, A Poison Dark and Drowning was great and I can’t wait for the finale to come out so I can see what’s still in store for Henrietta. This series is truly a great one and I’m so fortunate to have found it. It’s got great fantasy, great characters, and its witty. It’s the trifecta.

ARC provided by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Well, i can't belive i have to wait a year to read the next book in the series. How am i supposed to do that?
I loved A Shadow bright and burning so much and even if this book is a lot different in some ways, i love it none the less. I don't want to spoil anybody so i'll keep this short, but you guys have to read this. I liked so many things about it!
First of all Mary. She is an amazing new character and i love her to pieces. She's fierce, she's powerful, she's loyal to her friends. Perfect.
I also really liked seeing the old crew togheter again even if not all the time. I missed them all so much.
I really appreciated the way some of the characters are turning kind of dark and i'd love to explore this more in the next book. Magnus was again my precious, and i really hope nothing happens to him since this book was hard enough. The writing also turns dark together with the story, and that was awesome. The beasts were so cool to see into battle, and i really want more of that! GIMME THE BEASTS.
So, to end this: A Poison Dark and Drowning is a perfect sequel and you'll not be disappointed. Go read it and be prepared to a glorious story.
