Mountain of Lies

Rate this book
When your life is built on a mountain of lies, the truth can be fatal. Pinned by a rock slide while conducting an environmental impact study in British Columbia’s Coast Mountains, Mia Blackmore figures karma has finally caught up to her. Actually, she’s surprised she got away with her crime this long. When a rough-looking man with a French-Canadian accent nearly steps on her head, rescue seems just a fingertip away—then the slope shifts again, sending them both hurtling down the mountain. The slide may have freed the auburn-haired woman, but undercover cop Hudson McClure still needs to keep her safe from the thugs who think he’s one of their own. The gang isn’t going to give up looking for their downed helicopter full of drugs. And, as it turns out, Mia and her decidedly wolfish dog, Neville, are his best shot getting to the crash first. Mia’s descent into Hudson’s dangerous world is like a landslide she is powerless to stop. Though her talent staying cool under pressure exceeds even Hudson’s own, there’s a hunted look in her evergreen eyes that warns him she’s hiding something—or from something. He just never anticipated her secrets could decide whether they get off the mountain alive…or in body bags.

Mia Blackmore finds herself in a strange predicament. First, she's almost covered by a landslide and supposedly left there by a would-be rescuer. To get free, she provokes another slide and takes her would-be rescuer along with her.

The guy out to be an undercover cop, Hudson McClure, up on the mountain looking for a stash of drugs, when Mia took him with her on her way down, and now, partly to protect her and partly to do his job, he's determined to stick around.

Only she doesn't want him to stick around and it quickly turns out, Mia is as good as keeping secrets and wearing masks as he is.

Usually freebies are mostly misses, and this one didn't look like much at the beginning. But it didn't sound so bad as to make me stop reading, and once the story kicked into higher gear, I was hooked.

Yes, I found it a little too filled with coincidences and the heroine got on my nerves a little with her supposed passivity (which I promptly forgot about, once the story got into its groove), and I loved the hero, their interactions and the relationship blossoming between them, I adored Neville, Mia's furry sidekick and lie detector, and the suspense, despite its many coincidences tying it all up in a nice little bow, was nicely developed, well-paced, and quite intriguing.

Because of the coincidental suspense, I somewhat wished the story was longer and the two cases weren't as connected as they turned out to be, but in hindsight, I must admit, the length was rather perfect. Not too short to make it all seem rushed, and not too long to drag it all down to a halt.

I liked the voice and narrative style and I'm looking forward to reading more from this author.

My first read by this author and it was really engaging. Colorful, interesting and annoying characters, namely Gio, he was both aggravating and just plain stupid.

Hudson and Mia complemented each other quite nicely, they made a good pair. Of course my favorite character was Neville! That has got to be the smartest dog on the face of the planet!!!

Overall it was a pretty interesting read with a well developed storyline though there were a few grammatical errors. Mainly with run on sentences which is really confusing and distracts from the book. Some parts felt a bit rushed but other than that, it was a very likable story.

I thoroughly enjoyed this one. No shortage of action, tension or conflict. The two main characters were convincing, the supporting villains might have been a little cliched but it didn't detract from what was a very good, fast-paced, psychological thriller.

Sorry but I was generous with rating. After the crashed helicopter scenes it was all confusing and hard to follow. Actions of characters throughout were inconsistent and actions by villains not realistic.

Mountain of Lies: The Pack Book 1 is by Jayne Evans. It is a wonderful book set in the mountains of Canada. The book is realistic and deals with drug runners. It is easy to read and does grab your attention.
Mia was pinned under a boulder on a slope in the peaks of the mountains in British Columbia. She was on an unstable shale ridge in a downpour. If she could somehow manage to get her rain poncho out from under the boulder, she could get free. However, she doesn’t have enough room to get enough of a push on the boulder to get it to move. At least she was free from her stalker up here. Maybe the stalker had really lost interest in her the last couple of years; but he wasn’t here. However, the thought that he could still go after her Mother made her try to shift again. Then above her, she heard footsteps and voices. Maybe help was here.
She saw boots in her view and the man belonging to them was talking to two other men. The man had a French accent and she hoped he would turn enough to see her and help her. He couldn’t hear her over the rain. Then he turned to leave. She couldn’t believe he would leave her after seeing her. Then something gave way above and the boulder holding her moved and she went sliding down the hill again with the shale. She saw the man go barreling down the mountain with the debris from the slide. She hoped he wouldn’t be hurt and that she would not either.
Both Mia and Hudson manage to stay alive with the slide and without major injuries. Why was he on the mountain? What is she now involved in just by helping him? They manage to get themselves in even more danger as they work to find evidence against a drug lord. Even her dog, Neville, can’t keep her out of trouble.

Part suspense. Part horror. Part adventure. Throw in some hard rain and lightening. Add a couple of “romantic interludes”. Toss in an undercover police officer, a wildlife biologist and her wolf-dog, a psychopath, and the Canadian wilderness and you have an action packed survival story. The story is a fast read with an interesting cast of characters. Though no literary masterpiece, I was intrigued by the hunky undercover police officer and also by MIa, a wildlife biologist, fearful for her life and her mother’s. But, it was Neville the wolf-dog who stole my heart. I enjoyed book 1 and will definitely read book 2 of The Pack Series.

ETA: Okay so I just realised this is the author's debut novel. I didn't know this when I wrote my review so it might come across a little harsh, considering. I usually go easier on new authors, sorry!

My main problem was that we didn't get enough descriptions of the characters and their environment. I had a hard time picture what they were doing or where they were and that kept dragging me out of the story.

The book starts off with the main character, Mia, trapped under a rock.

It's not clear just how stuck she is (she's "pinned under a boulder" but that's all we're told). How did she even end up falling in the first place? Where is she? Yeah, some mountain range in British Colombia but it's not said what her immediate environment is like. I know she's on some sort of slope but how steep is it? Is it on the side of a mountain? How high up is she then?

Then she hears the voices of some men and we get this scene:

The man twisted sideways, glancing up the slope and pulling down his zipper. Mia squeezed her eyes shut and the first trickle of

All I could think was, oh wow, he's peeing on her! But no, the sentence continues with:

air made its way back to her lungs.

You cannot use the word "trickle" for something right after describing a person peeing and not expect the reader to make a connection between them. Stuff like this can really distract you from the story.

Anyway, Mia accidentally loosens some rocks and falls even further, crashing into a tree. Okay, so that means the slope is very steep (i.e. if not for the tree, she would have kept rolling just like Remy (the peeing dude) did), but then how on earth does she just stand up and calmly walk to where Remy ended up? We're told nothing about her injuries, she literally just goes into nurse mode for the guy like she wasn't just stuck under a fucking boulder for who knows how long and then slammed against a tree. Isn't she at least a little bruised? Achy? Didn't the ground tear the skin off her arms? Anyting???

She finds the guy and he has a massive, bleeding knot on his forehead. Instead of telling him to stay put and radioing for some kind of medical help, she helps him up and turns around to quickly march back to her camp (letting him trail behind her) and then she tells him:

"Thank you for the escort. You can find your way back to your camp?"

The guy has a head injury - a concussion at best. He could collapse and die from exposure or get lost inside the... forest? (it's not clear where they are). Why the fuck would she act like that? The author tried to portray her as a strong female character who could resist Remy's charms/flirting but that doesn't mean Mia's supposed to let him die.

Also, Remy's whole "wow, Mia's incredible because most women would already be whining for a bubble bath and some wine after being out in the wilderness this long" was sexist and annoying. There's no need to slag off other women to make your heroine "better" - the reader will decide her worth based on her actions, not what other characters think of her.

Lastly, there were some minor editing issues like how it's spelled "bolder" on page 1 but "boulder" on page 3.

Overall, there's potential here but for me, it just needs more work. I stopped at 4% because after all of that ^, I already know it's not for me so there's no reason to annoy myself or end up giving the book a bad rating.

This was a free download from Amazon, not terrible but a little corny to read. For example, Hudson and his level 2 smiles, then level 3 with an added dimple to get his way with the ladies. The deep dark secret that kept her running. . .which wasn't even her doing or her secret. The way they so quickly fell for each other. Etc etc. But the story follows Mia who somehow gets stuck on a mountain with an undercover cop (and a couple bad guys the undercover cop was working with) they end up calling down the mountain together and teaming up, all while having doubts about one another. Hudson, the undercover cop is searching for a down helicopter full of drugs and Mia just so happens to know exactly where it is. She's been hiding from a guy named Abe for years who just so happens to be the guy that Hudson is also trying to bust. They find the drugs. Abe shows up. Tries to kill Mia. Doesn't succeed. Mia and Hudson marry and love happily ever after.

I haven't read a book this good in awhile. The only part that didn't fit in well was the lost children on the mountain, a side story that was resolved simply.

Other than that, the story was tight, the danger of the mountain and the drug dealers was well balanced.

Mia was clever and brave, having dealt with a horrible thing she's still coping with from the past. Hudson is a great undercover cop who brings down lots of drug rings. Neville is a star, dog psychologist extraordinaire, better than many of the humans in the book.

Together, they go up and down the mountain, searching for the drugs to bring down the ring Hudson has infiltrated. As they spend time working together, they end up revealing their secrets to each other and falling in love.

Well wrapped up, with the bad guys caught and both Mia and Hudson safe. Really enjoyed this book.

Adventure led second chance romance

3.80 stars - this is my second time reading this story as the first time I wasn’t paying too much attention and I hadn’t started writing reviews.

Told from third person point of view for both Mia and Hudson, it was a bit far fetched to how Hudson met Mia at the right time when she was in a middle of a rock slide - although details of the event weren’t really as clear as I have hoped.

Since they were both there, it was just convenient that Mia helped Hudson with his undercover drug retrieval. Also convenient that they were attracted to each other and I suppose that made it all insta-love.

So in the end when everything comes to light, Mia’s past catches up with her as the bad guy ties up with Hudson’s undercover job.

On a side note, I would love to read Mitch’s story.

4.5 Stars. An attention grabbing read for me, by this new-to-me author.
(1= dnf/What was that?; 2= Nope, not for me; 3= Yes, it was Okay; 4= I LIKED IT A LOT; 5= A favorite, IT WAS GREAT!)

MOUNTAIN OF LIES by Jayne Evans begins on a coastal British Columbia mountain range with Mia/FMC, a wildlife biologist, semi-buried under a rock slide triggered by her movement and the pounding rain. Remy/MMC, an agent currently working undercover, is searching nearby with 2 other disreputable men when the slippery shale slips out from under him. He crashes down the mountainside smashing into rocks, trees, and shrubs as he drops, landing hard near Mia. Suddenly, Mia finds herself and her extremely well trained, fierce and loyal wolf-like companion, Neville, caught in the crosshairs of an enforcement investigation involving a gang of crooks. Mia has personal reasons for avoiding the police and now questions how Remy fits into the new equation - Is he truly LE or is he too, a crook? Is Remy a threat to her safety, or is he trustworthy? Should she cut her losses and run, yet again? Will her past catch up to her now the the police seem to be involved?

MOUNTAIN OF LIES was my first book by Jayne Evans and I was quickly pulled into the story. I found myself cringing each time the antagonists came on page and I could imagine myself enduring the constant rain while while trudging up and down the mountains fleeing from trouble. I was fascinated with Neville’s extensive training as it’s something I follow in our area and have a little experience. Both Mia and Remy were believable, knowledgeable, likable, strong characters as well, and I cared what happened to them. I appreciate that Mia didn’t pull the typical TSTL actions that always put me off in a mystery or suspense novel, and yet neither was she a hard bit**. Double Yay! Plus there is a touch of romance that isn’t over-the-top steamy.

I recommend MOUNTAIN OF LIES to readers who enjoy Proximity/Danger trope novels in the Contemporary Suspense, or Action/Adventure genre where the setting is wild, natural, and demanding. I enjoyed MOUNTAIN OF LIES a lot and look forward to future books by Jayne Evans.

READER CAUTIONS -
Profanity - Yes. Occasional strong language is used.
Violence - Yes. Antagonists are drug runners and there is a psychopath killer but their actions are not described in a detailed, graphic manner. This isn’t a dark thriller which I tend to avoid.
Sexual Situations - Yes. 2 Very brief scenes of intimacy that could easily be skipped if desired.

Trapped on a mountain by a series of unfortunate events, two very different people will go to extraordinary lengths to survive rockslides, drug dealers, and the dangerous secrets they both keep.

They'll just have to:
A. Avoid getting caught up in a rockslide.. again.
B. Find a downed chopper full of drugs.
C. Outsmart the morons sent to collect them.
D. Try not to kill one another first.

Should be simple, right?

I couldn't put this one down.
With a nice pace from beginning to end, a storyline packed with action and adversity, and characters that were not only interesting but likable.. Is it any surprise that I was hooked?
And did I mention Neville? Oh, my animal-loving friends, you're going to love him. This "dog" is such a delightful creature. He is, hands down, my favorite part of this story

The romance was done surprisingly well, not an insta-anything, which was a huge relief. Mia's tough, Remy is charming, and both are keeping secrets. Does this cause misunderstandings and suspicion between them? Yes. Does it also make for good reading? Absolutely.

The book isn't very long and can easily be devoured in one sitting so if you're looking for an absorbing read that won't have you lost for days, I highly recommend keeping this one in mind.

Mountain of Lies is the first book I have read by this author. It takes place in the mountains of British Columbia in Canada, which is an unusual setting. The book opens with Mia, a wildlife biologist, pinned under a boulder on an unstable mountainside in the rain, panicking that she is going to die. Then she hears voices. Another rockslide frees her and sends her sliding down the mountain. Remy/Hudson has become separated from his companions, has a large lump on his head and is very keen to play the hero and rescue Mia. She is having none of it. Neither of them are what they say they are – but what are they hiding?
This is a fast-paced thriller with lots of twists along the way. The main characters are engaging and believable, the villains a bit cliched, especially Gio, but the story is entertaining nonetheless. I could have done without the weird creepy smiles Hudson thought would charm Mia. Fortunately, he stops after a while. There are two separate plotlines that seem to completely unconnected, but converge as the story progresses. The ending seemed a bit abrupt, but as this is the first in a series maybe that was deliberate. I’m not normally a fan, but Mia’s dog Neville steals the show.

Smarmy Goodness Wins

Hudson manages to engender himself not only to Mia, but her four- legged protector, too. Not through his smarmy smiles, but through his heart.
Ms. Evans's writing some is the complete opposite of what I like to read and write in, but no less compelling. Her style is more staid with its own melodic quality to it. With all the information about climbing I think it had to be more precise.
The romance part was a slow burn, and just as enigmatic between Mia and Hudson as it was between Hudson and Nev. A trust had to be built up incrementally even over the short time they knew each other, because it had to depend on trust. A trust that had to keep then alive in the dangerous situations they got themselves into.
All-in-all a most enjoyable book
And I'm looking forward to reading Stolen Treasure, now too.

I'm struggling a little bit with this review because while I think the book was lacking, I read it in one sitting and found the story entertaining and suspenseful. The plot itself seemed a little far-fetched. There just wanted enough details added to make it seem plausible. I feel like the story was a little rushed, and there weren't enough details to really breathe life into the setting, and I think there could have been more details to the characters to set up their romance. But, despite all of this, I did enjoy the characters, and there was plenty of action to keep me reading. Ultimately, I'd give it 3.5 stars, but I'm rounding up :)

Edited???

Ok so I was reading this really good book that was action packed with a drug ring and hiking in the mountains while running from bad guys and romance and then in a hurry the whole thing ended in less than 20 pages. Like seriously what the ?!
Did the editors just stripe this book to make it fit a predetermined length? Did the author get tired? This book needs about another 100 pages. I feel cheated. The whole ending just happened and wasn’t logical. Otherwise a good book.

This book is action packed as two people who are kind of thrown together--both with a past they have to keep hidden--have to work together to bring down a drug gang. All while fighting the attraction they are forming for each other. At least the dog knows who is the good guys and who the bad!! For some reason everyone thinks the dog is a wolf?

Will these two be able to live through very bad weather, guys shooting at them and manage to find the drug stash before the bad guys? I really loved this book and think you will too!

An excellent read.

I'm not usually for suspense of any kind, but especially the romance kind. But, this book, had me from go! Hudson and Mia make a great team and couple. With Neville it's complete! Looking at life as an U.C., and on the run is a different story, I'm sure it's worse than this but just this glimpse into the lives and lies was interesting, scary, and I am so glad I read this. Look forward to Neville's story!

This is a Good Read! Suspense at every turn and the twists keep coming...it's got mad love of nature, man's best friend, activism, drugs, police work at it's finest and, if course, romance. The story arc of the two main characters is believable, and the story lines written about the bad guys really keeps you guessing. Neville, the hero of this book, for sure. Can't wait to have another journey with him. Highly recommend.

Interesting read

I started this book a little while back and then got into other books. I just realized I never finished it and restarted reading it. I liked how complex mia was and hudson. You know the fact that mia never gave up and kept going to protect herself and her mother. It's how you wish life could be. Even though it was a fictional book there are certain things that could be realistic.

You can't run forever

This was meant to be a easy job that was until he saw Mia and then everything changed. Mia doesn't believe that Hudson is deep undercover, she needs to get away from him. But she is stuck with him until they find the drugs will they make it out alive? Mia knows that the past is waiting for her and she has to run before it us too late. Hudson knows that he can protect and that he can help with getting the past sorted but will she trust him? A good read.

This one was a fun surprise find. Suspense, a little action and a great story line to keep you flipping the page.

Hudson and Mia make a good pair and it definitely kept me on edge to figure out the end of their mystery. There’s a little spice in there I wasn’t expecting either so would rate this one in the “romantic suspense” category.

This is told in first person and an enjoyable quick read.

Great Read

I grabbed this book for its cover, and am glad I did. The action and suspense hooked me from the beginning! I must be honest I am usually a paranormal reader, but this story of normals had me hooked. I can't wait till my next day off to read Neville's story! This book is a must read for fans of drama, suspense, cop stories, and a happy ending but not fairytalish.

This one was hard for me. It was almost to twisty and turny. So many lies and so many liars. You had to read every word or you could miss something. In the end it was an enjoyable read. If you like intrigue and a hard to follow mystery. This book has murders, eco-terrorists and drug dealers. You will like this book. I don't think I will read anymore in this series.

S girl, a man, and a dog.

I like books that keep my interest from the first word. This book does that! It took me on a great adventure. I met an undercover cop and a great dog. Everyone thought the dog looked like a wolf, do you really think a wolf could be taught to behave that well? Just wait going on dead the end.

Pretty impressive

I found myself quite immersed in this read. Plenty of suspense to pull you in, mysteries for unveiling, a growing connection and intrigue between the characters, and even, a very lovable dog.
I've already read the 2nd book in the pack series and look forward to devouring the 3rd. Way to go Jayne Evans!
