The China Study Quick & Easy Cookbook provides a large collection of recipes that are plant-based (no meat) and utilize a variety of whole foods. Although the word "China" is in the title, it's not an Asian food cookbook. Rather, it references a series of books by T Colin Campbell and features a wide range of dishes (typically, variations of unhealthier food such as Mac N Cheese). The book is bright and friendly, well photographed, well designed, and with nice breadth and depth in the recipes (which are very easy to make). The focus of the book is healthy food that is very quick and easy to prepare.

The book includes meal plans, pantry lists, and then ends with measurements guide, dietary symbols, nutritional value, and an index. Recipes are single page, have bold orange titles, use italics and bold for the ingredients list, and steps are in numbered paragraph form (the easiest way to follow a recipe!). Storage time, substitutions, and tips are included as needed.

The recipes break down as follows: Breakfast dishes, Sauces, Salad Dressings & Seasonings, Snacks & Spreads, Salads, Sandwiches, Pasta & Baked Dishes, Soups, Entrees, and Deserts. Recipes vary: Stovetop fruit crisp, tostads, pita pizza alfredo, poblano-corn quinoa cakes, mushroom tacos, island red bean stew, asian noodle soup, fuss-free pho, Southwest burgers, summer penne pasta saute, late summer potato salad, falafel, alfredo sauce, jerk spice rub, herbed orange vinaigrette, fresh apple muffins, apple pie granola, muesli, and many, many, more.

Common substitutions for unhealthier ingredients are medjool dates for sweetness, non dairy milk (coconut, hemp, etc.) for milk, cauliflower for cheese, mushrooms for beef, and whole grains for flour, etc. There are several bases that you'll make in advance and use them through the week to make the various recipes.

The list of recipes is long and they are well photographed. The substitution tips help keep the recipes fresh and interesting. But most importantly, very few recipes have more than 3-4 ingredients or 3 steps. Indeed, many recipes have 1-2 steps (not counting the staples made in advance, which are also easy). I found it very quick to plan a bit in advance and then quickly whip up meals in the morning and during the day. All really are that time efficient.

In all, I really liked this cookbook a lot. It's friendly, easy to use, and has great recipes for eating healthier. The breadth of the recipes means there is a lot for everyone, regardless of likes/dislikes. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

I was really looking forward to this book. I'm desperate for plant-based meal plans that will provide a grocery list for the week along with 3 to 4 things to prepare during the weekend that will ultimately be used for a variety of recipes throughout the week. That is exactly what the title promises but there were only 2 sample meal plans at the beginning of the book. The rest of the book is organized like any other plain ole cookbook organized by breakfast, snacks & spreads, soups & salads, sandwiches, entrees, and desserts. That would not be so bad if I didn't have a completely different expectation based on the title, the back cover description, and the foreword.

I love the other two China Study Cookbooks. They remain a staple in my kitchen and my go-to cookbooks for most of my cooking. Every recipe I make from those cookbooks are delicious. Unfortunately the few things I tried in this cookbook were unsuccessful. The Zucchini, Corn and Red Pepper Pancakes did not hold together and were a mushy mess; Creamy Poblano Corn Chowder looked unappealing and tasted only ok; My family would not eat the Quinoa and White Beans with Lemon and Olives; and the Green Sauce with it's 4 cloves of raw garlic was inedible. I don't know what happened with this cookbook. All the recipes sound good but apparently they were not actually tested, which is unacceptable.

from Terri:

A great cookbook if you are eating a plant based diet or you want recipes to help you add more fresh vegetables to your diet. Simple and easy to follow instructions and the majority of the ingredients are common to most households. The photos are bright and clear so you can see what the finished recipe will look like.

Be sure to try my favorite recipes of Buffalo cauliflower bites, Warm mushroom salad sandwiches and Carrot-almond spread.

Okay... I didn't actually finish reading it. How do you mark a cookbook read? I'm not going to read every single page of a cook book. With that being said it is a decent plant-based cookbook. It's not my favorite, but some of the basic recipes for condiments and bases are really good. There are a lot of photos. That isn't a big issue for me, but I know a lot of people want photos in their recipe books.
My only qualm with it is that I bought because it said it had menus in it for weekly meal planning. I was sorely disappointed. There were two menus and both of them repeated the same recipes 3 times throughout the week. You had 3 or 4 dinners of the same meal. Boring. It didn't help at all with what I was looking for. A quick and easy meal plan for someone on a plant-based diet who doesn't like to cook but doesn't want to eat the same thing every night. Is that too much to ask? Why can't I find what I'm looking for?

As I'm blessed/cursed with familial high blood fats, my aunt suggested I switch to eating based on the China Study Diet. She described it as oil-free, dairy-free, sugar-free, gluten-free, beef-free, and so on. She said I could still eat my Alaska salmon, as well as chicken breast (boring!!) and turkey breast (almost as boring).

Sounded dreadful. Still, she'd had success with it, so I picked up a copy of this cookbook. Surprisingly, there are sugars--date puree, brown rice syrup, and maple syrup, though used sparingly. There is gluten, but no oil. Foods are browned on a non-stick pan, sometimes released with a bit of water. Grains are all whole.

One benefit to the cookbook is the cook once, eat all week promise. I think it's really more prep once, eat all week, but it gets you to same place, a boon in any of our lives.

Until I try some recipes, I'm reserving my further opinions. The book is well-written and well-illustrated, so you know what something should look like when you're done with it.

I absolutely love this book. I have been struggling to find a good source for easy, plant-based recipes that can be made and eaten all week; as I am the only vegan in our household, and also prepare meat-based recipes for my other family members. This book is a godsend for me! P.S. The recipe pictures cause me to drool, they look so good.

Love this book. Most of the meals really are quick and appear to be relatively simple (I'm not super fond of cooking.) And the suggestions to do some work at the beginning of the week (make a grain, cook/acquire beans, make a sauce or two) really make the plan seem workable. I'll be purchasing this book.

I loved the China Study book and adapted some of it's conclusions to my eating habits. So when I saw this book, I knew I had to give it a try. Nice book with also a little information about the China Study in case you don't want to read that one seperately. A tip for healthy eating!

The low-fat sauces that could be used for a lot of recipes make this book. It is one thing to eat low fat, but some things require a sauce if you are cooking without oil and without using butter as a condiment. He provides the answers.

Loving It

I love Del's recipes . So easy-to-use and yummy to eat. It's nice to have food without all the sugar, salt, and oils that come, even plat-based cookbooks.

This cookbook includes three sample menu plans in the beginning of the book and recipes follow. The photos of the recipes were hit or miss: some looked great and some looked really unappetizing. Recipes include a Date Barbecue Sauce, Basil Pesto Hummus, Buffalo Cauliflower, Falafel, Mushroom Salad Sandwiches, No Queso Scalloped Potatoes, Penne with Mushroom Dill Cream Sauce, and Creamy Pablano Corn Soup. The Banana Bread Smoothie was amazing. The Black Bean Soup and the Strawberry Cream Smoothie were okay but required additional seasoning for my tastes.

Some of the recipes use sauce recipes given elsewhere in the cookbook, which is helpful. However, some recipes are almost too simple; for example, the Pasta Alfredo recipe literally includes pasta, alfredo sauce (recipe given on another page), and salt and pepper.

The book is separated into breakfast dishes; sauces, salad dressings, and seasonings; snacks and spreads; salads; sandwiches; pasta and baked dishes; soups; entrees; and desserts. The Index is searchable both by recipe title and ingredient.

PROS: The meals in the book are healthy.

CONS: Be forewarned, this cookbook has nothing to do with Chinese food – who’d have thought! Though you think I would have been tipped off by the falafels and tacos on the cover, but alas, I received this book for free to review and had not paid a whole of attention to the cover until it was time to cook.

OVERALL: While I like the concept of the book, I was not intrigued by very many of the recipes. Of the four I made, I really only liked one of them. I wish there was more talk of what the China study is in the book and I wish I hadn’t been deceived by the title.

To see my whole review, including four recipes I made read my blog.

Recipes to try: pg 156 Scalloped Potatoes with Saffron Cream
pg 168 Mulligatawny Soup
pg 176 Sweet Potato and Red Pepper Soup
pg 186 Quinoa and White Beans with Lemon and Olives
pg 191 Zucchini, Corn and Red Pepper Pancakes
pg 192 Mediterranean Vegetable Stew
pg 208 Cauliflower Parmesan

I tried the asian salad recipe from this book and it didn't turn out well. Maybe I am just not used to no oil salad dressings. I also didn't like how the recipes depended a lot on other recipes in the book. If I just wanted to try one recipe from the book to add to my current meals, I would have to make a couple recipes from the book to get the right dressing or filling.

Great recipes! I am very impressed with the variety of recipes. The recipes are easy to make. I will be exploring this book for sometime. I will purchase this book for my librarian to round-out the selection of cookbooks already there. Thanks NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to discover and review this book.

Many simple and quick recipes. I do not like that quite a few of them look short and simple, but they reference a recipe on another page as part of the recipe so you have to flip to other pages to make the whole thing.

Gave this one to my daughter after browsing through it.
The recipes used many ingredients that were unfamiliar to me and I did not think they looked very EASY at all...sorry.
This book was won on a goodreads giveaway.

Looks delicious, and expensive...

Great ideas but a lot of the recipes call for specialized ingredients I don't keep in my pantry. Even still, there's several meals I can't wait to try!

Do you belong to "The China Study" sect? Here's a book for you. Otherwise you don't need this brand tied blog collected recipes. Mori-Nu Silken Lite Firm Tofu? And why do you call it Basic Mayo when it's just a mushy base as a transport for vinegar?

I have long been fascinated by The China Study... It's truly a revolutionary way of life! The problem is that I'm not the kind of person who can easily just incorporate ideas into my daily life, so when I saw The China Study Quick & Easy Cookbook I was ALL OVER IT! There are such amazing recipes in this cookbook that the whole family loves - awesome smoothie, muffin and granola recipes for breakfast, unique salad and sandwich ideas, and AMAZING pasta and soup recipes that you can make year round. Oh yeah - and desserts to die for! Stovetop Fruit Crisp and Oatmeal Raisin Cookies are my favorite.

The cookbook includes meal plans that make it simple to plan out your week and gorgeous photography so you can really see up close what the dishes will look like. I highly recommend adding this cookbook to help you incorporate more healthy meals into your rotation. 5 STARS!
