I don't have any writing awards or honors or accolades to talk about. I didn't go to college or get any degrees to hang on my walls, but I've always LOVED to read. When I was a kid, my mom always knew where to find me: in my room with my nose in a book. Then in my twenties, I took an extensive creative writing course and I fell in love with writing, too. Making fun things up and writing them down for others to enjoy makes me happy.

Oh, and I also love pizza, chocolate, ballroom dancing, colorful Christmas lights, and watching TV. I live in the Seattle area with my wild and crazy ferrets. :)

This was an absolutely delightful, entertaining book that young people and those of us who are young at heart can enjoy to the fullest.

The magic and adventure was never-ending. Imagine living in a house where every room was alive with a different magical power! Now, imagine that you and your sibling also possessed magic beyond your wildest dreams. What a childhood that would be!

This book was well-written and fun. Ms. Haberman has a great imagination and knack for pulling the reader right into the story and zooming them along on the magic carpet ride with Chase and the other kids. There was never a dull moment to slow the story down.

Chase and the other three children acted just like normal kids with their bickering and squabbles and fiercely protective attitudes toward each other. Chase's relationship with his younger brother Andy was very realistic and sweet and his awkward, blushing crush on Persephone was cute.

The bad guys were appropriately evil and dangerous but not so horrible that they would give young readers nightmares. I loved the nice little twist at the end of the book and the action that took place.

I will definitely continue on with this series. The little kid in me who can't resist the allure of magic and adventure would never forgive me if I didn't! :)

I read this book with my eight and ten year old boys, they really enjoyed it. The author's extensive imagination runs riot as she creates a magic house filled with rooms that each hold a secret power. I don't think I am giving away too much when I say the boy’s favourite power was the ability to shoot any food out your nose and eat it afterwards - yes truly disgusting childish fun.
This story was reminiscent of Harry Potter, however lacks the dark, scary depths. The plot and characters are also lighter. Chase Tinker moves at a slower pace, there is a lot of exploring and less action or fighting off the bad guys. It is less appealing to adult readers, however perfectly crafted for younger audiences. Both boys and girls will enjoy this book.

This was a good start to a children's book. The story line got a little boring in the middle but picked up by the end. The characters were good and I liked the idea of tinker house. The powers were unique and it was nice to have usual powers in the book.

When it comes to reading, I think a part of me will always be a kid at heart. That’s why I still enjoy reading middle grade books from time to time; they take me back to some of my happiest childhood memories. Chase Tinker and the House of Magic contains all of the elements that made me fall in love with reading all those years ago: a relatable hero, a thrilling story, and lots of magic!

The standout aspect of this novel is the writing. The characters, the setting, and the pacing are all very well done. I especially loved the descriptions of the Tinker family’s magical house; they burst with such vibrant imagination. What I wouldn’t give to explore a place like this and try out the different magical powers that each room holds! Want to time travel? Not a problem—there’s a room for that. Need to teleport? There’s a room for that, too. If the book had only been about exploring every nook and cranny of the house room by room, that would have been enough to keep me reading.

I thought Chase made a great main character—brave and daring, yet sometimes too rash with his decisions. I loved how he and Andy looked out for each other, and their good-natured sibling squabbling lent a sense of realism to their relationship. I also liked how they formed a tight-knit quartet with their cousin, Janie, and Persephone, the housekeeper’s daughter. Chase’s crush on Persephone and how embarrassed he became around her were just too cute.

The twist toward the end of the novel quite surprised me and should lead to some intriguing plot developments in the next book. It’s been a while since I’ve read a magic-themed book for younger readers, and they, too, should find this both engaging and enchanting. There’s plenty of action and mystery, and let’s not forget the magical house that is just built out of plain awesomeness.

3.5 stars

Unfortunately for the book's genre, the comparison to the Harry Potter series is inevitable, which is perhaps its downfall. Preteen children coming into powers -- check. Family legacies and elderly know-it-alls with lots of powers -- check. Magical castle-house and environs -- check. Evil antagonists wanting to steal powers -- check.

The plot twist was a doozy, and I expected something totally different! But then, after the plot twist, the ending felt rushed. I know it's meant to continue into another book, but I wish there was a bit more writing in this one to tie things up.

That said, there were parts of the story that were fresh, the descriptions of the house were imaginative, the brotherly relationship was sweet, the pacing was good, the dashes of humour were interwoven nicely, and the writing style clearly shows talent.

Overall, it was an easy and enjoyable read. I just expected too much. I admit I may not be the ideal target for this book, but I would highly recommend it to preteen children, as they may not be quite as picky as older HP fans.

A very big thank you to Malia Ann Haberman for providing me with an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Note to author: I'm really sorry for the extremely late review.

For a self-pub author, Chase Tinker and the House of Magic is a really well written story. I truly applaud Malia for her talented writing and her daughter for the good editing.

The story sucks you in right from the beginning 'till the end. It keeps rolling and there's simply no chance for you to get a breather from all the nail-biting events that keep happening.

The characters are really well rounded and Chase's family situation (absent father and a mother who works all day to support the family) really reflects real life situations out there in the world.

All in all, Chase Tinker and the House of Magic is a simple yet utterly entrancing and interesting story. I highly recommend this series to anyone who enjoys a fun read.

Malia pens "Chase Tinker and the House of Magic" in a fantasy plot that is very well written, very descriptive, flows smoothly and totally magickal. Her characters were very believable and lovable to the point where I was totally captivated by it all. Between the twists, turns and the cliffhanger at the end, it will keep you guessing and waiting for the next book in the series. And...if you head over to her website, she has a section of deleted scenes that you don't want to miss. A great book for middle school age and adults.

There's a lingering sense of nostalgia when you begin reading Chase Tinker and the House of Magic, especially for those of us who grew up with Harry Potter. Endearing characters and a great storyline leave you aching for more.

You also get your fill of the super bad ass guys hell bent on ruling the world. But barring their way
are the Tinkers with a house full of magic at their disposal. Looks like an epic battle brewing. As the
book 1 ends, the first blood has been drawn. Our heroes survive the first showdown but theirs is also the greatest loss.

Malia Haberman comes accross as a superb story teller and draws you completely into the tale.Eagerly awaiting Book 2.

What kid wouldn't want to discover that his long-lost grandfather was a magician? And that he and his brother had inherited some of his amazing abilities? This is a phenomenal book for middle grade readers, who can very easily project themselves into this adventure. In the grad old tradition of Harry Potter and Star Wars, I hope we hear a lot more about Chase Tinker, as well as the author, in the future.

I received a free copy from the author in exchange for an honest review.

This is a very fun middle grade book. It follows Chase Tinker, who finds out he has magical abilities, and adventure and general awesomeness ensues. It was action-packed and generally well-paced, and I ended up highly enjoying every single page of this book. I definitely want to read the rest of the series as well.

This is the first book in The Chase Tinker series. I loved it!

Chase Tinker is a wonderful character, though he doesn't exactly endear himself to the reader with his shoplifting antics in the beginning. However, as the story unfolded, I enjoyed watching his development from a frustrated teen into someone who I would be proud to know. He knows he has a magical talent, but it's not until his younger brother Andy has his ten and a half birthday or Dimidiatus Anniversarium that things begin to get stranger. As they discover the mystery surrounding their magical talents, danger lurks in the shadows.

I received a complimentary copy from the author in return for an honest review in 2012. Unfortunately, due to my rather large reading list, I haven't been able to read it until now. Since then it has been re-edited. I am kicking myself for not reading this book sooner. I started to read it and was hooked immediately. The story is told mostly through the eyes of Chase and Andy, though other characters have a say too. I enjoyed meeting the other characters in the story. Chase and Andy's grandfather is slightly eccentric, but I liked him a lot. Janie is Chase and Andy's cousin and also has magic. Then there is Persephone Periwinkle, the housekeeper/chef's daughter. The Tinker house on Blackberry Island is almost a character on it's own. I found myself wishing I lived in that house, it seems like a great place to grow up in, with rooms full of magic. Though I was not enamored with the cuddlepus. I don't think I would like to be cuddled by a plant, the thought makes me shudder!

This is a wonderful story full of adventure and mystery, and I found myself sitting on the edge of my seat as Chase, Andy, Janie and Persephone faced danger from a foe wanting the Relic hiding in the attic. There are also several twists and turns that keep a reader guessing. Secrets are revealed and I must admit I never saw some of them coming. I found myself on a roller coaster of emotion from beginning to end. If I had one complaint it would be that it ended on a rather emotional note, rather than a cliffhanger. I understand why the author ended it this way, but with all due respect, it left me feeling rather angry and upset (just like one of the characters). Other readers may not have the same response, so I will leave it up to you to decide for yourselves if you decide to read the story. Having said that, I am now looking forward to reading the next book in the series, Chase Tinker and the House of Secrets, as soon as I can to find out what happens next.

Malia Ann Haberman has written a entertaining and exciting story for middle grade children. This is her debut book. I love her writing style, which is fast paced and imaginative. The flow is wonderful too, though there are some scenes that slow it down a little (mainly the time travel section). However, I would definitely read more of her books in the future.

I highly recommend this book to middle grade readers aged 9 to 14. However, I also recommend this book (and series) to adults who love reading middle grade fantasy, or to those who are fans of books like Harry Potter. - Lynn Worton

Let me start off by saying that I've never read a book, in the fantasy genre, with images so perfectly clear and descriptions that didn't leave me mind-boggled for, like, and entire half hour. I didn't have to go back and reread anything, I didn't have to spend the next ten minutes trying to decipher the true meaning of the words, and I didn't space out anywhere in the ENITRE book! (Notice that I've just died and gone to heaven)

Chase Tinker and the House of Magic is a wonderfully written clash between Alice in Wonderland and Harry Potter. It's got everything, from giant houses with moving staircases to walking hat stands and grinning ferrets (FERRETS!!! :D).
And the best part? It's not boring. It's not full of cliches. It's not confusing in any way. And besides, it has everything a middle-grade book should have. It's funny, witty, exciting, bone-chilling, romantic, adventurous, and MAGICAL!

The Characters
Chase Tinker is, primarily, the main character. He's a cool kid, barely reaching his teen years. He's the sort of boy that, the more you get to know him, the more you love him. It's impossible not to. It's one of those attractions you can't run away from. He's not difficult to understand either. Even though the story is written in third person, Chase's thoughts and feelings were easy enough to get. I fell in love his witty sense of humor and his undying enthusiasm, it's just so addicting!
His little bro, Andy, is as cute as can be! He's the little guy anyone would want as a brother. Besides, he's hilarious and smart. He's 10 1/2, but he hasn't lost his little-boy charm yet. It's adorable.
Together the two brothers are inseparable. Ever since Andy discovered his time-stopping power, the connection between the brother's has strengthened.
Let's hope it's enough to keep the bad guy away :)

Plot
Apart from: magical, truly captivating, and fluidly paced, I can only describe the plot in one other word: unique.
So, ok, there are some resemblances to things in other books, but what Malia Ann Haberman has done to add those finishing touches to the magic is... it's just out of this world. Imaginative doesn't even start to cover it. The story is a whirlwind between the used and the original. It's a nice mix too. This way, you never know what to expect. And trust me, expect the unexpected in this book (Keep an extra sharp eye on that ferret, Maxwell. He's a tricky little devil he is. Adorable, but tricky).

Overall
I honestly can't believe I hadn't heard of this book before. In my opinion, it should be in every elementary school library. Kids will LOVE this! And so would tweens/teens. It's an adventure you just can't miss!
I couldn't get enough of Chase and Andy, or the Magic House, or their wonderful adventure together through this magical place.
I highly recommend this one to anyone at all. It's a fun, light read that makes you smile all the way :)

Malia Ann Haberman’s CHASE TINKER AND THE HOUSE OF MAGIC is a delightfully fun story of magical adventure that is sure to enchant young readers. Almost like a mash-up of the HARRY POTTER books, L’Engle’s WRINKLE IN TIME, and C. S. Lewis’s NARNIA stories, Haberman’s novel follows the adventures of 13-year-old Chase Tinker and his 10-year-old brother Andy as they discover the magical heritage of the Tinker family. It seems Chase’s father, Benjamin, had long ago decided to deny his family heritage, so neither Chase nor Andy knew about their powers or their history. When Benjamin is kidnapped by a shadowy group called the Dark Enemy, Chase’s grandfather shows up to take his grandchildren home to their ancestral roots. At an amazing magical mansion on the beach, Chase and Andy meet their cousin Janie and her friend Persephone, and the four of them set out to rescue Benjamin and save the magical world.

Haberman’s story is filled with clever and funny magical details which will definitely capture the imaginations of middle grade readers. The “House of Magic” is an amazing place, with magical rooms, floating staircases, and endless spaces to explore . . . and seemingly endless ways four kids can get into trouble! At the house, Chase and Andy learn to perfect their own magical powers (Chase’s is telekinesis and Andy has the ability to freeze time). They also learn the history of their family, the Tinkers, who have battled the Dark Enemy for generations, always fighting to preserve the mysterious “Relic” that holds the key to their magic. Should the Dark Enemy get their hands on the Relic, all the goodness and light in the world could be destroyed.

This is the first of a planned series of novels all revolving around Chase Tinker and his magical family. While I’m not a fan of serialized novels, this one easily lends itself to future stories. As in the Harry Potter books, Chase’s battle against evil won’t be quickly won. That said, HOUSE OF MAGIC does have a satisfying conclusion, meaning readers won’t be left disappointed with how this volume of the story is resolved.

Parents, this novel is appropriate for readers aged 10-14. There is no inappropriate language, and while there is an element of violence and heavy doses of suspense, I found nothing objectionable. There is a hint of romance between Chase and Persephone, but no overt sexuality. I see this as the kind of novel that both boys and girls will embrace, which is rare for children’s literature. It’s well-written, professionally edited, and tightly plotted. I recommend it highly.

Ah, to live in a world filled with magic. The one escape that I'll never get too old for is one to a magical place! Trust me. Reading Chase Tinker and the House of Magic spoke to the little kid who still shelters inside me. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, I love Middle Grade books. Books with child heroes, perfectly evil villains, and just the right amount of whimsy tend to capture my heart. So I was very much looking forward to seeing where Chase Tinker's story would lead me.

Chase is a fabulous main character, and one that I see all readers warming to. He's this perfect mix of funny, awkward, and brave. Younger readers will probably see a little bit of themselves in Chase. He squabbles with his brother Andy, but is also fiercely protective of him. He's brave when he needs to be, but also makes rash decisions sometimes. In other words? Chase is a normal kid. With crazy emotions, adorable crushes, and the want to be a man before his time. He's relatable, and fun to follow.

In fact each and every character in Chase Tinker and the House of Magic comes alive on the page. I was introduced to the Tinker family a bit at a time, and I found myself adoring each and every person presented to me. Well, except for the villains of our story, of course. They were also well done, in that they came across as just what they were meant to be: undeniably evil. The Marlowes give the Tinkers something to fight against, and that's where all the magic really becomes a vital part of the story.

Oh, and the house! I could gush on and on about the titular home filled with magic. With rooms full of the most interesting powers imaginable, I'd be perfectly content to do nothing but read about Chase and his friends exploring this amazing place. I refuse to spoil even a minute of that for potential readers. I'll honestly say that it was my favorite part of the read. I loved getting lost in the Tinker's home, and I'll happily go back. That, and the ending absolutely has me wanting more.

So if you're looking for a book for your budding reader, or even a read for yourself to get lost in, I'd suggest picking up Chase Tinker and the House of Magic. It's definitely a fun place to spend a few hours getting lost in!

Chase Tinker and the House of Magic is a wonderful and well written middle grade fantasy. I was immediately sucked into the story and I enjoyed every minute of Chase’s adventures. I thought the story of the Tinker magic was incredibly unique, as well. It’s been quite some time since I’ve read a great middle grade fantasy/adventure novel. I find that the problem I encounter the most is the writing – I feel like it’s too dumbed down and I can’t enjoy the story. This book did not have this issue! I loved the writing in Chase Tinker in the House of Magic and it was so refreshing to be drawn into the story so quickly.

Chase was a troubled 13 year old who acted out frequently after his father’s disappearance. His little brother, Andy, turned 10.5, the age in which the Tinker family line discovers their secret power. Andy’s discovery forced Chase to admit he had his own. Things got even more crazy after their grandfather showed up when he was thought to be dead and revealed they are part of a magical family line. They got to spend the summer at the Tinker House of Magic, which began their magical adventure. Chase and the other children in the house spent the summer learning more about their heritage and powers and attempted to be helpful to the overall conflict threatening the Tinker family.

I loved all the characters and their interactions. Janie was fun and her banter back and forth with Chase and his brother was hilarious. Persephone was a huge help, despite being non-magical and a little bit older and I loved her character because of the dynamic it added to Chase. Chase dealt with controlling his magical powers and handling his first crush, all while trying to uncover the mystery of his father’s disappearance and the origination of the Tinker family powers.

Chase Tinker and the House of Magic was a quirky and fun adventure. I grew to care about all of the characters and enjoyed all of their various adventures. If you are looking for a great middle grade fantasy adventure to read, I recommend this book and I’m looking forward to seeing more in the series! The book made me remember why I love the genre and I’m really glad I read it!

This review was first posted on Music, Books and Tea

I went into Chase Tinker expecting a really fun, adventure-filled fantasy book, and that was exactly what I received. This was one of the first Middle Grade books I’ve read in a long while, and I really enjoyed it.

The plot for Chase Tinker and the House of Magic was brilliant. There was very rarely a dull moment throughout the entire story, which made for an entertaining read. I liked how the Tinker House was magical, with each room inside the house possessing a different power. My favourite was probably the library (no surprise there!) with its magical pirate ship, but all the rooms were fantastic and cleverly thought out, and helped move the plot along at its quick pace. The twist with Chase’s Aunt Clair and his father was very clever and also very unexpected – I certainly hadn’t twigged what had happened, but I thought it was pulled off very well.

Watching Chase and Andy develop their magical powers was very interesting. It made me smile to see how sceptical Andy was of magic at first, but when their long-lost grandfather showed them that being magical was something to be proud of, Andy soon changed his mind. I really liked Andy, he was the youngest of the four and always felt like he had something to prove, especially to his brother.

I thought the character’s were extremely well written. I felt they were portrayed so realistically, especially when they were talking to each other. Chase, Andy, Janie and Persephone were constantly bickering and picking on one another, which I think is something very typical of tweens, because they’re only just starting to grow up and mature and still act like kids a lot of the time.

Overall, Chase Tinker and the House of Magic was a really fun, action-packed start to a very promising fantasy series. I can’t wait for the second book to be released and see what happens next with Chase and the rest of his family!

Chase Tinker and the House of Magic is a fantasy book that is very descriptive, easy to read, full of events and, of course, full of magic. It is a book that will captivate you and transport you in a magical world, but this isn’t a fairy tale. This book has magic and fights with evil.

Thirteen-year-old Chase Tinker discovers that he has the power to move things and that’s surprises him. He doesn’t know how to use it, how to control it or how to get rid of it. It’s just strange that this is happening to him. His father has been missing for over a year, his mother works a lot to help the family, but she doesn’t pay attention to her children, even when they most needed the care from a parent.

One day, Chase learns that his younger brother, Andy has a magical power too. If that wasn’t enough, their supposed dead grandfather arrives at their door. He takes the boys for a summer vacation at his house on an island. Soon Chase learns that his grandfather house is full of magic, every corner of it. Also he is shocked to find that all their power is controlled by a magical Relic in the attic. A relic that needs protection. And with that comes the enemy. The Tinker family has an enemy that wants their magic, their house and the relic. He wants they’re life. And Chase must find a way to stop this from happening and to find his father. Will he do that? Is he prepared enough for that fight? You will have to read the book, in order to find out. And believe me you wont regret it!
“We're all entitled to our different likes and dislikes. Imagine the world if we all liked the same things.”
I think Chase is a character who grows a lot with every page. When I finished it, I immediately wanted to read the next one, because the story is interesting, and I want to know more about Chase and his adventures. This is a book I recommend to children up to age 15. Thank you for the opportunity to read you’re book Malia, it was just wonderful!

Malia Ann Haberman exhibits her amazing talent through her story Chase Tinker and the House of Magic. I read it all in one day and refused to put it down--- Er, close my Kindle app on my computer, to be precise. Her character, Chase Tinker, develops throughout the story in such a "magical" way. I cannot wait for the next to watch Chase develop, and, hopefully, to see where he is going with Persephone.
If you are unfamiliar with the story, it is about a young boy named Chase and his younger brother Andy who have to deal with coming into strange new powers without the support of their magical father. He's gone missing. So when the boys finally share their lack of knowledge of their powers with each other, they were surprised to find the grandfather, who was supposed to be dead, at their door. They go with him back to the magical home that belongs to the Tinker family, and wonderous things happen as they gain knowledge about their family heritage, powers, and things they weren't supposed to hear. Everything quickly starts to go downhill after their arrival, forcing the boys and their cousin, Janie, and the housekeeper's daughter, Persephone, to have to find their way through the mess of things.
Not only was her book amazing to read, it was amazing to see. I don't mean that there were pictures or videos, nor that the structure was beautiful to look at (though it was structurally flawless); just that she used a great deal of imagery and description that I felt like I was there with Chase and Andy and Janie and Persephone as they roamed the magical home filled with rooms of bizarre powers.
I want to read the next one so badly now that I have been left on such a cliffhanger and an unexpected twist at the end. She was gracious enough to tell me that I won't have to wait too long.
But. I. Cannot. Wait.

This book is perfect for pre-teens and young teens. I think most of this book is completely age appropriate - limited violence, no swearing, etc - and the simplistic plot is enough to grasp and be able to predict. Unfortunately that's what made it not so enjoyable for me...

I really liked all the concepts: the different powers, the Relic, the history, etc. What I didn't really like was how unexplained everything is. I understand that part of the mystery of the Relic and the powers is that no one knows where it comes from, but that kind of just seemed like lame way to get out of thinking something original up. I also felt the plot moved too slowly.

On the plus side, this book is filled with descriptions! In a lot of ways this reminded me of Harry Potter (the magical house thing probably did it in) but I think the author made it unique enough to be separate.

Chase is likable and a great big brother (always a pro!). You get to see a range of emotions from Chase, and I think he acts like a 12 year old does/would. That said, I think the description of this book is a little deceiving as Chase doesn't turn 13 until at least half way through!

Anyhow, you've got magic powers, mystery, and a classic good versus evil battle coupled with teenagers growing up and faced with some unusual circumstances. I definitely applaud the author's effort!

Editing: 5 stars
Story: 4

EDIT: The author messaged me and politely pointed out this is to be a series, and explanations are in place! I really liked this book, so I'm willing to give her the benefit of the doubt and keep reading!

We meet Chase Tinker and his brother Andy on Andy’s 10 and 1/2th birthday. Chase has already learned he can move things with his mind, but he’s not very good at it. When he and Andy go to the park, they discover Andy can freeze time. Chase is excited and Andy’s a bit freaked-out, especially once their supposedly long-dead grandfather shows up at the door. Things have been rough for the Tinkers lately, with their father, Benjamin, missing for quite some time and their mother having to work long hours to make ends meet. Now the boys are whisked away to the Tinker House to learn more about their magic and their family history, as well as meet other family members they never knew existed. Yet, as clear as it is their father has been hiding a lot from them, their grandfather is also keeping them in the dark about something deadly coming…

Ms. Haberman has written a fun and creative story about two boys discovering their magic and their heritage in the face of looming danger. Slightly reminiscent of the Harry Potter, Charlie Bone, and Secret Histories series, ‘Chase Tinker and the House of Magic’ is still one of a kind! I loved the characters and the house of many magical rooms. I enjoyed watching the boys come into their own, magically speaking, and seeing them play as well as fight. This is a great middle-school age book which adults will also greatly enjoy. I eagerly look forward to reading the further adventures of Chase Tinker and his family!

Things have been pretty crazy since Chase’s dad went missing a year ago. To make things worse, Chase Tinker doesn’t know why he and his brother have strange powers. Chase can move objects with his mind, and Andy can make objects stop moving or make them freeze in time. When their supposedly dead grandfather suddenly appears, the boys are a bit confused (as you can imagine). Their grandfather asks the boys to spend the summer with him so that they can learn to control their powers. Chase learns that the members of the Tinker family have magic powers given to them by a special Relic that is in the attic of his grandfather’s house. Things go from strange to worse because Chase also learns there is someone/thing out to steal the relic and the Tinker magic!

This was an awesome story! The action was exciting. The story idea is fun. I really liked the description of the Tinker house (the house the boys go to stay with their grandfather in). Ms. Haberman’s writing style is great for middle-grade and young advanced readers. I thought Chase was a great main character, and I enjoyed reading about him. The story was a quick read for me and I liked it so much, I would have liked the story to be a bit longer. I would have loved to know more about the Tinker house and the Marlowe family (the bad guys). This is only because I liked it so much, not because the story wasn’t told all the way. There was one instance of “What the h***”?” which in a book meant for young kids, it shouldn’t be there.

Beneath the Moon and Stars review

I love middle grade. I also love magic. This was a perfect mix of both. The magical aspect was awesome. It reminded me of Harry Potter and Howl's Moving Castle. All the characters were great.I loved how innocent they were. This had a super exciting storyline. I can't wait to see what happens next.

I really liked Chase. I like how excited he was about the magic. I also like how adventurous he was. I have a feeling his role is just going to keep getting better but hes the perfect person for it. Andy was so cute. He really grew into his magic. I love his innocence. Hes just a super cute little kid with magical powers. Chase and Andy had some pretty cool powers. I wanted to hop into the story so I could have powers too. The rest of the gang was awesome too. I loved Janie even if she was a know it all. Also Maxwell was a pretty cute partner in crime. I sense some romance brewing between Chase and Persephone. They would make a super cute couple.

This had a pretty great storyline. I loved the magic. All the different magical rooms were so cool. I wish my house was like that. There was a fair share of suspense and mystery. There was a pretty good amount of twists too. I never saw any of them coming. Overall I really enjoyed this. It was such a good read. Everything was pretty well done and I can't wait to see where the story is going to go.

Chase Tinker and the House of Magic is another YA fantasy on the same lines as Harry Potter. It isn't as good as Harry Potter; but I found it fun and entertaining.

The main character, of course, is Chase Tinker. He is a thirteen year old boy who finds out he comes from a magical family. Chase can be very irritating at times. He can be very bossy and doesn't think before he acts. However, he is very loving and protective of his little brother, Andy. He is Chase's sidekick and a cute, sweet little boy.

The villians of the book are called the Dark Enemy or the Marlowes. In this book, the Dark Enemy is more of a secondary storyline which I'm not sure that is the intent. I would have liked more backstory for the Marlowes. It would have given the book more suspense and intrigue if we knew more about the Marlowes.

My favorite part of the book is the house itself. Every room of the house has its own magical power. It is fun watching the kids explore the different rooms of the house and try to discover its magical power. Ms. Haberman has a wonderful imagination! I think my favorite room, of course, is the library. It is, indeed, magical to its very core. I wish I had a library like that!

Overall, I liked this book. It was fun and quick to read. I'm hoping Ms. Haberman will provide more detail about the Marlowes in the second book.

DISCLAIMER: I received a free copy of this book (from the Shut Up & Read / Read It & Reap group) in exchange for an honest review.

Synopsis: For the past year, Chase Tinker's family has been struggling after the disappearance of their father. Mom has had to work two jobs to make ends meet, and Chase has not handled it well -- acting out and getting into trouble. Things begin to get weird when his younger brother, Andy, starts to exhibit strange abilities. Then a distant relative arrives, and the boys spend the summer finding out that there is more to their family than meets the eye. Along the way, we are introduced to other relatives, new friends (and dark enemies), and above all the House of Magic, where the hundreds of rooms and hallways take our young friends down paths of adventure and discovery, as well as giving them insights into their own strengths and weaknesses.

Even though the intended audience for this book is younger than I, this book was an ABSOLUTE DELIGHT to read. I found this book to be a clever weaving of magic, imagery, and pure imagination. Toss in some interesting plot twists (including one that I did not see coming) and some foreshadowing (that I'd very much like to see played out), and the stage is set for some really good storytelling.

I look forward to the rest of the series.

Chase Tinker and the House of Magic is a middle grade novel that will appeal to both boys and girls alike.

Chase and his brother Andy are transported from the mundane life in New York and dropped at their secluded family home in the Puget Sound. There they find themselves exploring an enchanted house and discovering its hidden secrets. Desperate to find his missing father, Chase embraces his new found magical abilities and launches his own investigation. Chase finds himself in not only dire situations but comical ones as well.

This story is not only about the enjoyable characters we follow, but very much about the mysterious house as well. It has a life all its own. Every room offers a different adventure and Malia Haberman's creative mind gives us a vivid and entertaining read as we watch Chase react to everything he has been thrown into.

I enjoyed reading Chase Tinker and the house of Magic and I think young people will enjoy it to.

I received a copy of this book from the author for an honest review.

MY OVERVIEW: I really enjoyed this book. I love how the author did the good magic vs bad magic.

PROS: Chase was a great character, but I think my favorite was Maxwell. :) The house was both a pro and a con for me. I really like how the different powers worked, and then integrated with the house so everyone could use them.

CONS: I didn’t like, however, how the house was first done. Chase and Andy getting to the kitchen was crazy what they had to go through, and didn’t really make any sense, especially once you learn how the house works.

MY FINAL THOUGHTS: Wow! I did not see the twist at the end coming. I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

I need more! What an exciting, magical adventure! Chase Tinker and the House of Magic is a fun book with creative surprises that kept me hooked to the end. The character interactions and personalities really drew me in. I like how the characters have reactions and opinions all their own. They definitely act their age, which makes it fun for kids of all ages. The setting is magical and fun. The author's descriptions paint such vivid pictures- just by reading you can step into the world of the Tinkers. I love their magical house with the unusual powers of the various rooms and individuals. I want to move in too! Malia Ann Haberman is such a clever author! I can't wait for more!
