USA Today bestselling author Madeline Martin delivers a captivating novel of passion and intrigue...
Connor Grant is in search of a lady. Not a bride, but a woman to become a skillful and seductive spy in the service of King James. In addition to being the King’s personal assassin, Connor heads a group of female spies who aid him in his work, women with nothing left to lose.
Ariana Fitzroy is the perfect mark. Destitute, orphaned, and completely alone, she’s missed her chance at an advantageous match at court and cheats at cards to survive. When Connor catches her in the act, he threatens to expose her, unless she joins his elite roster of spies.
She agrees and is whisked away to a deserted Scottish castle to begin her training. Ariana quickly takes to her lessons in seduction, deception, and hand-to-hand combat, but less easy to fight are her feelings of lust toward the ruggedly handsome Connor, feelings she suspects may be reciprocated.
When Connor recruits her help on a mysterious task, the pair must work together to track a dangerous target. But Ariana suspects Connor isn’t telling her everything—not just about the mission, but also about his past. Will the secrets between them threaten their mission? "My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read."
Very good and so full of wonderful content and energy. The characters are amazing, 3 women taught to be spy’s by a displaced Laird who now works for King James.
The plot is fast paced, and full throttle action. Based from the Capital to the Highlands it never lacks for entertainment. I very much enjoyed it, and look forward to reading the others in the series.
I received an Arc copy of this book and chose to post this review
*I am voluntarily leaving a review of an eARC that I received from NetGalley and the publisher*
I liked this book, I was expecting a sort of "Point of No Return" type story and while there were some similar aspects between this book and that movie, this was definitely it's own story. This is a very hard book to review without totally spoiling the story, so I am going to just give the basic premise of the story.
Ariana has been supporting herself by cheating at cards since her parents and her brother passed away, and up until she met Connor Grant she was getting away with it.
Connor is a displaced laird of a decimated clan, he runs a spy ring for King James and acts as his personal assassin. He has an agreement with the king, 10 years of service to the crown and then he will be free and his holdings returned to him. Connor uses women as his spies and believes he has found the perfect candidate when he catches Ariana cheating and blackmails her into joining his "girls". Connor and Ariana share an instant attraction, but neither is in a position to act upon it. Connor never dallies with his "girls" and Ariana is noble born and therefore off limits as he has nothing to offer her.
Ariana reluctantly agrees to work with Connor and soon finds herself and another new recruit (Liv) sent off to the wilds of Scotland with Sylvi (one of Connor's girls) for training. On the way to the castle, Liv becomes ill and Ariana fears for her life. Once they reach the castle, Ariana meets the other "girls", Percy and Delilah. Percy is for lack of a better description - their "Q". She comes up with gadgets and potions for the team and acts as the team's healer. Percy immediately takes charge of Liv and with Ariana's help, they slowly set her on the road to recovery.
Ariana begins her training and soon realizes that each girl has her own story and reason for being there. She takes well to the training and is soon ready to take on her first mission.
What follows is a mass of twists and turns in the plot, betrayal, secrets, more betrayal, more secrets, some steamy moments, followed by the hero acting like a jerk, followed by the heroine acting like an idiot, followed by the hero redeeming himself and the heroine learning what love really is. As always, the writing is impeccable and the story is gripping.
I would recommend this book and I am looking forward to reading the future installments featuring the rest of the "girls".
Having read Madeline Martin’s highlander series (2015) before starting The Mercenary Maidens (2017) series, this 2017 series was a bit of a let down because I loved the Highlander much more than the first book of this mercenary maiden series.
This book had much more action, with less time allocated to focus on the romance between Connor and Ariana. There wasn’t enough bonding and relationship building to my liking. At one point of time, I thought that Connor was a bit of an ass to know that he has nothing to offer to Ariana (etc land or marriage) and yet he tells her he desires her and wants to go to bed with her. I mean, stop it man.
Because I still liked Madeline’s writing style, I did not skip the action parts but was still hoping that their romance would come into focus soon. Alas, it did not happen. Hence, I found their love a little unbelievable. Would have liked to see Ariana expand more about her family and background. It felt the story focused mainly on Connor.
Nevertheless, it was good writing by this author, with steamy sex scenes and likable characters.
Wonderfully interesting and exciting. It is sort of a Mission Impossible meets ‘Q’ from James Bond – only nobody is there willingly. The plot is well organized and revealed a little at a time to keep you drawn in, the characters are all interesting and the ending is spectacular.
Connor Grant came from a warm loving family and admired and adored his father. Then, one day, while Connor and is sister Cora were away from the castle, it was breached, taken and the clan members slaughtered. Connor’s father was mercilessly murdered.
Connor is coerced into becoming King James’ personal assassin and spymaster. He ‘recruits’ fallen ladies, trains them and they gather information for the King. You will love all of the ladies. They may be ‘fallen’, but they are strong, dynamic, and very, very stubborn.
I won’t say a lot more because it can give away too much of the great plot. Just know that Connor is in for betrayal, danger, and – oh yes – romance. Then you add in the beautiful Ariana and you have a story that pulls you in and keeps you until the very end.
Highland Spy, by Madeline Martin. Well here I am with another one of those fantastic books that I wish could turn into a movie. Let’s start with the cover. The cover is simply divine. Don’t you just love how the blue and yellow/ gold just clashes together, and then poof you have this gorgeous woman on the cover. By the way this is are main Character Ariana. To better enhance my imagination of Ariana I thought that writer did a wonderful job of describing her with descriptive details. The Samar could be said with Connor too. The writer did such a good job of telling a story that allowed me the reader to get lost in a a book for awhile. I always love it when a writer can do that. By doing some amazing research and providing facts to the story, everything about this love story seemed so real. The Scottish dialogue was perfect for the characters. I always love it when I read with the Scottish accent. This even more makes me feel connected with the book. The entertainment of hunting for treacherous black guards and spies certainly help the book move quickly for me. The many surprises that turns up at the end of each chapter had me flipping the page to see what would Connor or Ariana would do next. Can I talk about the other characters? My heart simply went out to Liv. My gosh what a sweetheart. I personally rooted for her during the whole book. Thank God Ariana and Percy were there for her. Another character who has some issues is Sylvi. personally, I think the woman is unhinged, but that’s what makes the story exciting, right? The love affair between Connor and Ariana, burns like a flame to candle. The are a few moments in the book that fan the flames of pleasurable moments. I simply love this writers style At story telling. I can not wait for the next book release. I give this book two snaps and a twist. Until next time my fellow readers.. read on! I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
Connor Grant has the task of recruiting and training lady spies to serve the king even while performing deadly missions at the king's orders. He feels that he has sold a piece of his soul to do this in exchange for the change to restore him as the laird of his ancestral lands even as he works hard to care for and protect the troubled and vulnerable women that come under his care.
Ariana Fitzroy is reduced to cheating at cards to make ends meet after the deaths of her parents and brothers leaving her alone in the upper echelons of London society and court. She is discovered and given a choice of being outed as a cheat or being trained as a spy. She opts for the world of intrigue and not without some excitement for something new that may give her purpose once again.
Ariana is eager and a natural at the skills she needs to acquire. She enjoys her time with the other women and particularly as Connor is her trainer. She is no longer alone and starts to wonder what it would be like to be with Connor.
Connor learns the identity of his next two marks. One is troublesome as the man was once his childhood friend, but also son of the man who attacked and killed his father and people. Even still, Connor finds it difficult to believe the man has become a traitor to the crown. And what of this attraction he feels for Ariana? She is in his care and he is honor-bound not to take advantage not to mention he has nothing to offer her.
This was a first time with a new to me author and it was also the beginning of a new and exciting series. I loved the blend of espionage, history, and romance. There is a well-drawn and engaging cast of characters with Connor, the women spies, and a few others. The setting of London society and then rugged Scotland of the 17th century was colorful and interesting. But the two pronged plot of espionage missions and the slow building passionate romance was the best part.
Connor is an honorable and deeply troubled man after all he has been through. The past weighs on him heavily as does the responsibility he feels toward the women in his care. He hates that he was forced to coerce them during their weak moments into the King's service and he works extra hard to make sure they are safe and equipped for their new lives. He yearns for Ariana and gives in to his attraction, but when he tries to do the honorable thing, he ends up hurting her because she has her own issues of the past.
Ariana is vulnerable because she is a lady alone without prospect or resources so she makes her own. The cheating is wrong, but is a necessity. She is relieved to be caught and offered a new life. The world that she enters is tough and filled with danger, but it suits her. She loves having the other women around her and grows to feel more than gratitude toward Connor. She's rather impulsive and has a few stupid moments where she's more lucky than right. She lets her past of being abandoned by others really do a number on her so that it dictates her actions with Connor.
The writing style and overall story kept me reading steadily and then riveted for the big ending. Some shockers there and had me very satisfied with the book and eager to continue on. So, I can easily recommend it to historical romance lovers who like suspense, a dashing and lethal hero, and a bold heroine.
My thanks to Diversion Books for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
Highlanders and spies come together to make the perfect match in this Historical Romance read. Highland Spy by Madeline Martin supplied a kick ass heroine and a troubled hero all in one page turning adventure.
Emphasis on kick ass.
It really is not just one lady who does the ass kicking, it’s several “broken” women taken in by Connor Grant and trained to become lethal weapons of mass... destruction? No, hmmm... manipulation? Well, they each have their own skill set. Ariana’s penchant for cheating at cards lands her in the arms of Connor who works for King James as a spy and personal assassin.
Let’s go to Kindrochit...
Kindrochit Castle and it’s surrounding area is where most of the story takes place. It’s home base for the spy training and Ariana picks up fighting and seduction skills. Because you just never know when you have to try and seduce someone...
Ariana’s character was a somewhat easy going one. Even though she had the “I can take care of myself” mentality it was easier for her to adapt to being a spy because she didn’t have any family. She jumps to her own conclusions and stubbornness throws a kink between her relationship with Connor.
I loved the interaction between the other characters. The other women each have their own story to tell and I just can’t wait to find out what makes them tick. Sadness and loss are thrown in as well, so get ready to tear up in some scenes. Let’s just say a savvy kitten mends some broken hearts.
Ariana’s and Connor’s love starts off quiet but ends up sizzling between the sheets, or should I say rug? Ha. It wouldn’t be a love story without the usual misunderstandings, trials and tribulations, which we get a satisfactory amount of.
All in all, it was a fun story full of intrigue, backstabbing, secret missions, and most important: a kitten.
A little note...
-The story starts off in London but plays out in Scotland around the early 1600s. -Can be read as a standalone, but you get a good introduction to the secondary characters in this installment.
Can I just say Wow! This book by Ms. Madeline Martin was truly an amazing read. How can I say that being somewhat new to Ms. Martin’s writing and this being only the third book of hers that I have read? Well for one thing I could barely put the book down I was so involved in the story which is written very well and the other thing was of course the characters which I’ll get back to in a moment. Ms. Martin wrote a highly intriguing story filled with suspense, spies, wonderfully strong feisty women, a handsome highlander, redemption, betrayal, deception, vengeance and love all wrapped into one story. Connor Grant a Scotsman must find an Englishwoman to be a spy so attends a London party. He first notices Ariana Fitzroy playing cards. Ariana is not that great at playing cards and he notices her cheating. Connor has found the perfect woman to be his spy. When Connor tells Ariana about her cheating she is scared that Connor will expose her instead he offers her a deal, become a spy for him. Ariana has no choice but to accept or face being punished and is whisked away to a broken down castle Kindrochit in Scotland. Ariana proves her worth with training to be a spy but as Ariana learns the ways of spying Ariana also can’t avoid the strong attraction she feels for Connor. When she finally tells Connor her feelings she finds her feelings reciprocated. Of course the attraction that Ariana feels for Connor could ruin things for them the spying and the deadly missions they are tasked to go on. Dare they trust their feelings in the high stakes of love or will they really lose everything including their lives if they give into their love? As I said I love Ms. Martin’s characters but truly it’s her female heroines that I so admire and love, Ariana is no exception. Okay so she’s a beautiful, brilliant, smart, gutsy strong woman what’s not to like? Ariana doesn’t back down from anything not only does she care for people but in the physical training and the other classes she proves her tenacious determination to learn how to do things right from her first mission to her others. She just amazed me so yes I had a little girl crush on her. As much as I wanted to avoid liking Connor I couldn’t help but crush on him a little too. Sure he has the makings of a perfect hero to swoon for. He’s a brawny handsome highlander that at first seems impenetrable non-feeling and so stoic that you want to shake him but as you read further you find that Connor does have a heart just has a hard time showing any feeling especially his love for Ariana. Well not only does the story revolve around them there is also Delilah, Sylvi, Liv and Percy who I all ended up liking and wanting their story as well. I can’t wait to see what Ms. Martin has in store for all these characters and while I wait I think I will read the book again even though this has been my third rereading of it so far.

This has been burning a hole on my kindle for a while as I’ve resisted reading it until I could read all three books in the trilogy one after another. My expectations were high as so many friends had recommended the books & also the reviews were very good. I’m very pleased to say this book lived upto my expectations & more. I was drawn into it from the first page & was engrossed all the way through. A heady mix of adventure, intrigue, deceit & of course romance definitely a keeper

Highland Spy

Ariana Fitzroy has lost everything, her fortune, home and family. So she has been cheating at cards only to pay her servants, landlord and bare necessities and starving herself while at it too. She does not take an outrageous amount, only enough to pay her bills, so she and her staff won’t end up in the streets! It doesn’t matter who she was or what her title once was, she was worthless to all of the London gents now! Furthermore she had a scoundrel for a brother, who spent her entire dowry on his own pleasures. What good did it do him now! He is dead now along with her parents, people she barely knew. Many said she was very attractive but had no finances. Not one man wanted her for a wife! She doesn't take an outrageous amount just enough to cover her bills. All her so-called friends turned their backs on her once she found herself in dire straits. Not one offered an ounce of compassion, sympathy, a helping hand or a shoulder to cry on.
However, now she gets caught cheating at cards and this handsome Scot threatens to tell the King! Except this Scot gives her an alternative with no real choice. Her choice is to take this handsome Scotsman’s offer, or ending up in Newgate gaol or with a rope around her neck, joining the rest of her family in the afterlife! Connor Grant, is the trainer of fallen women from the English court and personal assassin for King James VI. Connor recently lost another female spy, he despised that he had to find another woman in dire straits to train. Additionally to add to his list of guilt and sins of his fallen women. His guilt was heavy and lists were getting longer by the minute.
Connor was a Laird without a clan, castle or property. He hides his sister Cora at a nearby Abbey to keep her safe and so their enemies cannot discover her. The King promises to give him a castle and property but first he must continue to train his spyring of women and being the King’s executioner. When will this all end? When will the King give Connor the gifts he has promised? On top of that Connor is having inappropriate feelings for these new girls which could be dangerous for both of them!
This is the first book of The Mercenary Maidens trilogy. It is about fallen woman who joins an all female spy ring headed by Connor Grant. Like the women he is forced to do this by his majesty King James VI of Scotland and the Ist of England. King James is also the son of Mary, Queen of Scots, Connor is a Laird without a home and people living no better than these fallen women. They are not only spies but might possibly be an executioner in the worst circumstances. King James feels women make the best spies as no one suspects females.
These women spies have grueling training schedules, from exercising, fighting, using weapons, speaking gaelic, how to hide their weapons, how to speak gaelic, seduce but most importantly how to deceive. Furthermore, being women they are never suspected. Each one is putting their life in jeopardy, something that lays heavy on Connors heart but his circumstances are no better than these women who have fallen on hard times. Except he is falling in love with the newest member Ariana and he soon finds out she feels the same which could be very dangerous for both of them!
You can feel Ariana and Connor’s chemistry right from the get go and it definitely is a heart puller! When you hear their backgrounds, have the Kleenex ready as you will need them. The land villain’s are dark, creepy, sadistic and cruel as expected, but no spoilers. You will have to read the book to find out more.
Ms. Martin really outdid herself in this first installment as it was truly wonderful. The settings were breathtaking, plus a phenomenal dialogue that will knock your socks off! The fast paced page turning plots have your stomach in knots! As you truly didn't know what to anticipate next!
I have been reading Ms. Martin since her debut as an author. This book truly blew me away. I felt this book was more intense and had more depth and emotion. I seriously could not put this book down. It was that fabulous! Madeline Martin is one of my favorite authors as she is truly gifted and really knows how to spin a tale. I also love her historical fiction books like The Librarian Spy which was another phenomenal read!

Five reasons to grab your earbuds and listen to Highland Spy
HIGHLAND SPY is perfect for fans of tales wrapped in romance, history, and suspense. The royal English court and hillsides of Scotland in the seventeenth century were the perfect backdrop to this exciting tale. Martin sheds light on the trials women face in this era while highlighting their strengths. Conner Grant, an assassin for the king, trains fallen females to be spies for the crown. If you love espionage and intrigue paired with strong characters and romance you will be delighted.
Conner Grant is a complicated and honorable man. You can feel the responsibility and struggles he faces with regard to these women and the crown. As Martin peeled back his layers, I found I connected and understood him. It was fun seeing him train these women, face his past, and succumb to Ariana.
Despite her social status, Ariana Fitzroy our heroine has had a tough life. When Conner discovers her cheating at cards, she knows she is done. I really felt for Ariana and the lot in life she was given. She is tough, compassionate, smart, and determined. In her quest to prove her worth, she muddles things. More than once I wondered how she was going to get out of the mess she created. Despite working for the crown, Ariana enjoys the empowerment and friendship with the other women.
I loved the complexities of the story but also how wonderfully paced the tale was. This was my first experience with Madeline Martin but it won't be my last. Her writing easily allowed me to slip in, imagine the characters and become caught up in the different threads. While I anticipated a happily ever after, the danger, twists, and surprises along the way made for an addictive listen. The romance developed slowly and had its share of drama, heat, and banter. I quite enjoyed hearing it all unfold.
An intriguing Scottish romantic mystery and the first installment in Madeline's Mercenary Maidens trilogy!
He hated having to look for a new girl, a new spy to add to his band of fallen women. Yes, it was an opportunity to spare her before her ruin could be known, but a deep part of him hurt for the women in his employ and what they’d all endured.
Highland Spy by Madeline Martin is an intriguing Scottish romantic mystery and the first installment in her Mercenary Maidens trilogy which is about a group of noble women who have fallen from the court’s good graces and been swept up into an organization of all female spies. I can honestly say I didn’t want to put this book down! It’s the first book I’ve ever read by Madeline; I do not plan on it being the last. The story reminded me slightly of a series by another favorite author of mine, Victoria Robert’s Highland Spies series which also features female spies and Highland hotties. That said, they are similar, but different! Regardless… combine a sexy kilted Highlander with a strong-willed woman in a captivating story and I’m in!
As the story opens, we meet Lady Ariana Fitzroy. Her family has died leaving her alone and destitute. She has resorted to cheating at cards to earn enough to scrape by. It just so happens that Highlander Connor Grant is in attendance at the same event looking for another woman to add to his band of spies who work at King James’ bidding. His eye catches Ariana’s trickery and he knows he’s found the woman he needs. With the threat that her treachery will be publicly exposed if she does not acquiesce to Connor’s proposition, Ariana agrees. Before Ariana can catch her breath, she has been whisked away to a Scottish castle to begin her training…
Ariana and Connor were realistic characters with chemistry. I connected with both from the beginning. Each of their background stories pulled at my heartstrings. They were each strong in both character and will and they genuinely cared for others. Connor really tried not to succumb to his attraction to Ariana as he felt honor-bound not to take advantage of her being that she was under his care. The villains were reprehensible… I won’t say anything more as I could ruin some of the author’s curveballs and I won’t do that.
Following please find a few of my favorite quotes from Highland Spy:
“Have you had much luck tonight?” she asked. His gaze slipped to the neat stacks of coins in front of her. “No’ as much as ye, my lady.” She let her own stare trail across her piles of winnings. Shame sizzled against her cheeks.,,, “Perhaps I’m lucky tonight myself,” he said. The silky undertone in his voice crept up her back like the skilled swipe of a musician’s fingers strumming a harp. “What do you mean?” Of course she knew what he meant, but the glint of flirtation in his eye begged her to prompt him for the compliment. A golden dollop of honey dribbled to lure the bee. And she buzzed ever closer. He pulled his freshly dealt cards toward him. “Perhaps I’m lucky tonight because I’ve met ye.” --- Her breathing came faster, evidenced by the repeated rapid swell of her breasts against the low-cut bodice. Before he could let his thoughts circle around once more, he cupped the elegant line of her jaw in his palm. Her eyes widened. “Are you going to kiss me?” she whispered. Instead of answering, he lowered his mouth to the luscious warmth of hers.
Oh my! I had many favorite scenes, but one that still runs through my mind was Delilah’s lesson in seduction. Delilah was another member of Connor’s band of female spies (and her story will be the next one told!). Delilah was obviously experienced whereas Ariana had never even been kissed. Here’s a short snippet from that sensual scene.:
“This is an education on seduction,” Delilah said in a reverent tone… Ariana let her gaze skim across the silk wall hangings and shrugged. “I’ve not ever kissed a man.” ... Truthfully, she had not. She’d been so fixed on her attempts to placate her parents in the hopes they might pay her the slightest bit of positive attention, she had not so much as considered kissing any man. Delilah’s fingers touched Ariana’s chin, feather light, and tilted her face toward hers. “It is the most delicious thing. Close your eyes and I will tell you of it.” Obediently, Ariana closed her eyes, hoping if she did as she was told, the lesson would end sooner. It was an awkward sensation to sit in the ridiculous pillow-laden room with one’s eyes closed. “Relax,” Delilah said in a velvety tone. “Listen.” Ariana let her muscles slacken. “Imagine a man, tall and lean with muscle.” Delilah’s voice was quietly intimate. Hypnotic. “He’s staring at you as if you were the only women he’d ever seen. Truly seen. The only woman he’s ever wanted. The desire for you burning in his eyes.” Hazel eyes rose to the forefront of Ariana’s mind, a sharp jaw shadowed with a day’s growth of beard. Connor. She swallowed. “His arms come around you,” Delilah continued. “So strong, so warm. They offer you a protection unlike anything you’ve ever felt and make you wish you could melt into his embrace for the rest of your life.” In Ariana’s mind, Connor’s arms wrapped around her. But she didn’t shy from his touch – she welcomed. It. The chill of the room ebbed into a pleasant heat. “Your eyes meet. His fingers touch your face and his breath whispers over your lips. He lowers his head and you close your eyes just as his mouth touches yours, warm and demanding.” Ariana’s heart quickened and her breathing went almost ragged. Her mouth was suddenly dry and she flicked her tongue over her lips. “His body is a wall of strength against you, holding you upright, as your knees feel as though they will buckle. Then his tongue strokes yours, velvet fire and heady seduction.” Ariana drew a shaky breath….
I can’t wait to read Highland Ruse. That will be Delilah’s story! She’s the one who gave Arianna her lesson in seduction. I can only imagine the further instructions she may impart in her own adventure! Ooh la la!!!! While waiting for Highland Ruse to release, fans won’t be bereft. Madeline will be a part of THREE new anthologies releasing in 2017!
Highland Spy is well written and plotted. Blending political intrigue, espionage, pulse-pounding action and inexcusable treachery with real historical elements and a yummy attraction between Ariana and Connor made this tale a winner for me. You can expect plenty of surprising twists and turns along with a few shockers. I’d highly recommend Highland Spy to anyone who enjoys historical romantic suspense!
This book takes you on a emotional roller coaster. Telling you tales not only about the horrific past each character went through but also how they come to work and support each other together. In the beginning, it felt as though Connor was using the girls as his pawn to help him accomplish his mission for King James, so that his home, Urguhart Castle held in the King's possession would be return to him.
Selfish? Not.
The story further unravels to show all of the girls except Ariana, having a little something towards Connor. Not the romantic sort but more of gratitude. He picked them up and trained them to become stronger and this is all reflected at the final battle.
"The women had fought their way to the center of the men and now Connor stood back to back with the women of Kindrochit."
I admit, I screamed when I read this liner. It's touching to see how all these women never held any grudge towards him for whatever they were made to do. They respected him and were willing to fight along side with him, and it was the most POWERFUL scene I can imagine in my mind!
Apart from that, I enjoyed reading about the character Ariana Fitzroy, and how she changed drastically. From a cheater at a game of cards, to a trained spy and eventually Lady Grant, wife to Connor. What had me laughing so hard was Connor's idea in challenging her to a card game to humiliate how bad she was at card game when she could not cheat. Well, we all know it was Connor's plan to delay her departure. Awwwwww! (But seriously, did he spent his free time learning how to win at card games too?!)
I highly recommend this book! You won't regret it the moment you pick it up!
I loved the premise of this story from the first paragraph. Conner trains destitute women to be ruthless spies. He makes them strong, seductive and ruthless to serve the crown. But sparks fly when he meets Ariana and her training only makes her more seductive. Together they can find their HEA. Really good!

As Ariana’s training progresses and their feelings for each other deepen, Conner learns that something was not right with his sister and the man she has been getting visits from and sets out to protect her.
Madeline Martin weaves an intriguing tale steeped in mystery, espionage , family and history. The characters we meet in Highland Spy are well-described, strong and colorful. The beauty of London and Scotland are strikingly vivid as Ms. Martin’s writing skills bring them to the forefront. Ms. Martin’s writing style kept me saying, “just one more page” .
I highly recommend Highland Spy by Madeline Martin if you love a historical story with espionage, danger, love and intrigue.
This is my first Madeline Martin books and I grabbed it not only because the promise of man in kilt, but ...women spies in the highland? The last I read this kind of story was Monica McCarty's The Ghost, so I really curious to figure this one.
Highland Spy set in early 1605 England with King James on the throne. Connor Grant, heir to fallen Urquhart castle was tasked to recruit and train fallen women of the court and be spies for the crown.
The web of women spies here were totally different from Lauren Willig's Pink Carnation series, other than time period. Here, the fallen women deliberately being gathered and trained necessary skills like-hand-to-hand combat, lock-picking, seduction, sword fighting and so on. The women had murky background, one even escaping death and massacre. Barely. This is what initially pulled me into the story. The lady recruited on this first entry to The Mercenary Maidens was Ariana Fitzroy, who he caught cheating on cards. I like her spirit; how she stood up to make most of impossible situation and - once joining the maiden warrior - her blossoming into one kick-assheroine.
Although, I questioned the speed with which these girls learned their new trade. Even male warriors - from books I read before - took longer than these girls to be on their peak of condition. With fighting being new to some of these girls, it really felt a few months was miraculous for them to master the skills. Perhaps it's the willpower that boost those abilities. *shrugs*
Again, at first I love the suppressed attractions between Ariana and Connor. With the positions they were in, to be involved might jeopardize their work. Although of course I also quietly cheering them to somehow take that step.
Alas. When feeling crushed and heartbroken our heroine planned to escape the brethren. A trained spy. Flee when feeling slighted. Boo!!! There went my admiration to our heroine. No matter that twist in the plot opened new path to Connor's past, that weakness and the reason behind it just feel very anti-kick-ass to me.
And the rest went downhill from there. The reveal of the true villains, the escape plan, the unexpected help ...these all quite predicted, sure. But the delivery of the whole things were just too rushed. Never mind sudden declaration of love.
As intro to a new series, this book left much courses to explore for its next installment which each - I'm sure - would feature the maiden spy on center stage. Which was why I take a wait-and-see stand for this series. That saying, I wasn't too impressed with the story and the characters as I expected.
Advanced copy of this book is kindly provided by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Connor Grant recruits and trains women to listen for pertinent information and defend themselves as his spies for the king. Connor himself is King James' personal assassin. Losing everything three years ago, Connor works for the king to get back his home. Can the king be trusted? Ariana has no family, no home and lives by cheating at cards. Having no choice but to say yes to Connor's offer when he catches her cheating, Ariana finds friends with the other woman and a strength she never realized she possessed. Everything turns upside down and backwards when an enemy is a friend and a friend is an enemy. People thought lost are found and Connor realizes that the one thing he couldn't have is the one thing he needs. What I thought would be a straight forward plot, didn't turn out that way at all. Many surprises that had me reading paragraphs twice. "Did she really just do that?" This is the first book in the series and I'm already wondering what's coming up in the next one. Heat level 3. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book.
I have to say, I really rather enjoyed this one, provided by the publisher in return for a review. As well as having two solid protagonists and a well-rounded group of supporting characters, it had a dynamic, and pretty well thought-out plot with a couple of fun twists and turns.
The hero and heroine are fairly well matched. Neither were really sparklingly attractive HR characters that made you quiver at the knees or sigh in sheer joy, but neither were they annoying or unrealistic. The one real criticism I had was that it was never clear why the hero felt such a pull to the heroine. In my opinion, romances at least need to try and tackle the question of why her and not someone else, and I felt that this one didn't adequately manage that.
Anyway, 4 stars, I really like it, and particularly appreciated this it was set in a very clearly defined period of history, which wasn't Regency and included a real person as a character!
This is the beginning of another great series from Madeline Martin. As usual, she doesn't disappoint, as she weaves an amazing story for us. Intrigue, romance and edge of your seat suspense make for an enjoyable read with all the wonderful characters Ms Martin so aptly creates. The whole crux of the story intrigued me; from female spies to a reluctant assassin. The synopsis describes the story so well that I don’t feel the necessity to add a description. Suffice it to say that this story grabs your attention right from the beginning and doesn't let it go. I couldn't wait to turn the page to see what would happen next. I received this book for an honest review and can honestly recommend that everyone pick this one up; you won't be sorry.
From page one I LOVED this book. Picture a room crowded with tables of card-players and your attention is drawn to her.... because she's cheating and because there's something about her that can't be ignored. Perhaps an air of desperation, her beauty, or her uncanny way to fool all others at the table. Ariana is all of these things and more.
Connor needs another girl for his circle of spies. But they need to be woman down on their luck so he can take them and train them to be assassins, or spies, whichever is needed. He tries to stay away, he tries to ignore her but his heart always leads him back to her.
OUTSTANDING read, your attention is immediately held hostage page after page as this story unfolds. HIGHLY recommend it. I was offered an ARC for an honest review.
This book offered up a mixture of adventure and intrigue. I loved the "Charlie's Angels" in the medieval highlands vibe of the story. It was interesting to watch the various characters bring their personal skill sets along, in addition to acquiring physical fighting skills. Throw in plenty of emotional baggage and surprise blurred lines between enemies and allies and you get a satisfying romantic thriller. I can't wait to see whose story comes next in this series. I voluntarily read an advanced reading copy provided by the publisher via Netgalley.
I loved this story! The idea of female spies intrigued me. Ariana is a strong woman who has seen better days. She accepts Connor's offer to train and this leads to mistrust, learning, and love. It was a fun read, and I look forward to the next in the series.
I purchased this book, and this is my unsolicited review.
I had a chance to re-read this story with some recent changes, and I still loved this book. I highly recommend it.
I love the Mercenary Maidens series! Arianna is sassy & eager to learn and fits the need of exactly what Connor needs and then some! My heart wept for the emotional roller coaster that Connor goes through on dealing with his past. I recommend this book and hope that you enjoyed it as much as I did.
Highland Spy by Madeline Martin Rating 5 stars Conner and Ariana's story.

Ariana Fitzroy is alone destitute and vulnerable. She's lost her parents, her brother and her fortune. She's learned to survive by being a skillful card player. Ariana and Connor have an immediate attraction but her impulsiveness and feelings of abandonment create misunderstandings between them, the missions are dangerous and they can't lose their hearts an emotional mistake can cost them their lives.
Highland Spy is not what I expected a powerful telling of espionnage it's filled with intrigue, betrayal, emotional heartbreak, greed, love, second chances, retribution and redemption. It is fast paced with twists and turns that keep you glued I was unable to put it down til I finished the last page. This was my first Madeline Martin story and it won't be my last!
I received a complimentary copy from the author for my honest unbiased opinion.
I didn't love the power dynamic of this I've read a few books about female spies usually they're led by an older woman but this felt like historical Charlie's Angels and in the grand scheme of things Connor wasn't a bad guy but it still felt icky like you know that song that's like
temptation frustration his car is warm and dry don't stand don't stand so close to me
I'm not sure of the exact lyric order but the way that song feels gross is the same way this book made me feel like Ariana literally had nothing and no one and nearly immediately after meeting Conner she decided she was in love with him simply because he was kind to her and then when he started treating her poorly like everyone else always had she decided to stand up for herself and leave which I was so proud of her for because yeah you've got to stand up for yourself but then he was like no don't leave I love you which felt a little manipulative like Love The Way You Lie
"Baby, please come back, it wasn't you, baby, it was me" All I know is I love you too much to walk away "Wait up, come inside, pick up your bags off the sidewalk" Don't you hear sincerity in my voice when I talk? Told you this is my fault
I'm not saying I think Connor would abuse her but he asked her to be his secret whore a few chapters ago but now that she's like I've got to get out of this situation he's like oh I love you
I don't know it definitely could have been worse but it also could have been better
Ariana Fitzroy plays cards to support herself and her household. Only she doesn't do it well. Connor Grant works for the king and is looking for another girl. He sees her, watches her and knows she will do nicely. This is a very powerful and complex story. I was amazed at the things the ladies, could and did do. There is death, betrayal, intrigue and daring in this wonderful tale. The characters are so life like and determined. They have to be because they all are trained in combat, they are all fallen women, no one wants them. The descriptions add to the interest, along with the plot, you have a tale to keep your , attention, making it almost impossible to put down and is easily read. There are some very racy scenes in this. I loved the second trip Connor and Ariana made to Urquhart castle. He finds some of the people from the castle that fled due to the massacre and betrayal. The castle was actually empty right now. So much going on and so much action. This great author knows how to write a great book. I received this book from the author and voluntarily reviewed it.
It’s 1605 & Connor Grant is in search of a lady. Not a bride, but a woman to become a skillful and seductive spy in the service of King James. In addition to being the King’s personal assassin, Connor heads a group of female spies who aid him in his work, women with nothing left to lose. Ariana Fitzroy is the perfect mark. Destitute, orphaned, and completely alone and cheats at cards to survive. When Connor catches her in the act, he threatens to expose her, unless she joins his elite roster of spies. She has no choice but to agree and is whisked away to a deserted Scottish castle to begin her training.
