Finished within a day, yes. I absolutely enjoyed this book! Although short and mind you I know NOTHING of H.P. Lovecraft's literature, though after this I think I'll have to read some to better understand and immerse myself into the world of Lovecraft. This book also takes on a dark comedic spin on the old Scooby Doo, it's spot on but he's not so much the scaredy dog most of us grew up with. In the book you'll find a few other Scooby Doo characters and themes and yes the endings.
I would advise the reader to go through the book with a pad of paper and a pen. I only used such to record which page I went to next and if it resulted in death or an ending I couldn't come back from I could backtrack my steps better. It worked and within a few minutes I discovered the only true ending! It was a winning moment. I then backtracked my pages several times, picking most if not ALL endings. When I was done I proceeded to read it like a normal book but I did read the book first as Khurt intended, I did NOT cheat! I found some easter eggs and I think if you should happen to read this book to either read it on your own terms or take my suggestion and do it that way.
Thank you Khurt Khave, it was an absolute pleasure!
"Scooby Doom versus the Cult of Cthulhu" was not at all what I expected. Based on the name and the "Rutrow!" on the back, I was thinking it was Scooby Doo. This is definitely not. In the first/starter section, he (you) kill an old woman, and it stays pretty gruesome from there on out. If you choose the less violent routes, you are pretty likely to come to an end. I found a lot of quick endings. I would not recommend for young audiences due to the violence. That being said, I think this would have an audience who would enjoy creating their own gruesome adventure. I'm giving it 2 stars for it's ok (just not my cup of tea). Please note that I received this book through a goodreads giveaway. All opinions are my own.
As a fan of old cartoons and horror, I had no small amount of enjoyment passing the time going back and forth through these pages, just trying not to get killed. That, of course, happened several times. But that's just part of the fun! And backtracking is usually pretty easy. The writing is very dry and sardonic; in a serious straightforward tone even when relating an outrageous scene. Any horrific and humorous reaction is well-earned and never forced. I'll likely pick up this book again, just to see what else can happen. This is every bit as much fun as a spoof, a game book, and a Lovecraftian pastiche should be.
I haven’t read a choose-your-own adventure book in years, this was so fun. A tongue-in-cheek lovecraftian horror adventure, a little gruesome, a little gory. A friend gifted this to my partner who loves HP Lovecraft and I thought it would be a fun little activity to read it back and forth, and it was, I highly recommend it. Great date-night book. :)
I just wish it wasn’t so short! It took like 10 minutes to “solve” it, then we just flipped through looking at all the possibilities. Still really fun.
The title and cover tell you exactly what you need to know. It's a fun spoof on Lovecraft with a bit of Scooby Doo in it, but more gory than goofy. I spent a few hours reading through, picking different endings. Most endings are swift and brutal. But what do you expect from Lovecraftian mythos? It was fun, and I'll be happily passing it along to friends so they can enjoy it too.
5 stars for nostalgia. If it was a cover to cover book the writing might have bothered me, but if you love horror and have fond memories of those choose your own adventure books, this is a quick trip down memory lane.
The idea and cover are more clever than the actual execution. It doesn't function that great as a Choose Your Own Adventure book or as a Lovecraft parody. There are plenty of references to Lovecraft but since the CYOA is so poorly sketched out it just feels like a list of lame Lovecraft jokes that you can't read straight through but have to skip around to read. CYOA books weren't high literature or anything but were much better thought out than this. And it really only has one actual correct way to do it while everything is just a dead end or loops you back so the choices are pointless. All of this would have been somewhat okay if I'd found it funny but it was somehow more childish than some CYOA books.
