Ya' lives by the sun, ya' dies by the sun. Life is always at a turning point . . . when faced with a certain death . . . would you be willing to seize the moment . . . and do what it takes to survive? Know this. You'll never know where the bend in the road might take you. The new dystopian, post apocalyptic EMP fiction series from author Bobby Akart (The Boston Brahmin series and the Prepping for Tomorrow series), has been hailed as a masterpiece of post apocalyptic EMP fiction. Prepare to learn, as well as be entertained as The Blackout Series continues with TURNING POINT. In book one of this new post-apocalyptic survival fiction series, 36 HOURS, the reader was provided a glimpse into the rapid decline of society once word of the catastrophic solar flare racing towards Earth began to spread. Book two, ZERO HOUR, thrust our characters into the perils of a post apocalyptic world. At Zero Hour, an EMP caused by a massive solar flare left America in darkness. The Ryman family, who weren't preppers, applied common sense, logic, and a will to survive to their decision-making as they faced their death, their neighbors, and the depravity of man. Now, in book three, TURNING POINT, the characters face a life altering decision - should we stay or should we go? The oldest and strongest emotion in man is fear, and the strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown. Will American's flee the urban centers, the proverbial golden hordes, for the countryside? Will it be safer than the cities? TURNING POINT will lead the Ryman family into a complex, inexplicable world where danger lurks around every bend. This new post apocalyptic EMP fiction series will continue with the release of SHILOH RANCH, in late 2016. Note: This book does not contain strong language. It is intended to entertain and inform audiences of all ages, including teen and young adults. Although some scenes depict the realistic threat our nation faces from a devastating solar flare, and the societal collapse which will result in the aftermath, it does not contain graphic scenes typical of other books in the post apocalyptic genre. To me he actually surpasses them.” He has written more than 80 novels in the disaster, survival, medical and political thriller genres.
The Ryman's are in for their biggest challenges yet
Turning Point tells the story of the Ryman family after an EMP (or multiple EMPs) have taking out the power grid in the US. The first two books tell of their realization and then preparation. Book three tells of their decision to leave the safety (or not?) of their home to try and make it to a friends ranch hundreds of miles away. A trip that would normally take a couple hours, but the world is far from normal anymore.
I wanted to point out that the artwork really matches the book. It's basically the imagery of the Ryman's leaving the city (and the chaos) for the gravel roads of the country. Sure, when you're away from the city you are leaving the sheer number of people, but when you enter the country you are finding a whole different kind of person.
The Ryman's are back again for the third book in this series. I love the callbacks to the different items that the wife grabbed when she was freaking out and learning a little about prepping from the other books. I also like that the daughter had some interaction with different people (both good and bad) allowing her character to grow quite a bit in this book.
I'm a fan of the length of this book too. Sometimes authors can get bogged down in details and making sure that they have a 300+ page novel. Akart realizes that telling a good story is more important than a page count or the number of ways you can describe what's going on.
As with the other two books in this series -- it ended with a cliffhanger, and one of the biggest in the series yet. I know that the story is continued in Shiloh Ranch (which thankfully releases in audiobook soon-ish). Like Akart's other series (The Boston Brahmin) as soon as I finish one book I just want to continue with the other.
Turning Point was narrated by Kevin Pierce who, as always, does a great job. He voices the characters really well and as I've pointed out more than a dozen times, has one of the best suited voices for post-apocalyptic fiction.
Bobby Akart is a master of intertwining fact in with fiction. Sure, all of his books are fiction novels, but he puts as much research and information as he can so that people who aren't preppers (or prepared) can take notes and learn from the characters experiences. Sure, the stories are fiction, but what happens might not be if the US was thrown into an apocalyptic situation.
Almost 3 a.m. and I have to STOP until morning...The end of each book kept me going but I "think" maybe I can wait until I catch a few winks since the group has made it to Shiloh!!!
It seems like I go from one great series to another since I took a COVID driven sabbatical from my usual $16.95+ bestsellers by Baldacci, Grisham, Lee Child, Clive Cussler, Brad Thor, and Dean Koontz, etc. I have been amazed at the plethora of "totally outstanding books" available for free with new authors or through Kindle Unlimited! I have had the pleasure of reading some through purchases in the past as with several of Bobby Akart's series (all outstanding!), likewise with Nicholas Sansbury Smith and his series, Shayne Silvers, Tom Abrahams, and a number of others that slip my sleep deprived brain at the moment. And as my daughter starts work again tomorrow and we can stop making ends barely meet (even having to skip my meds and meals at times...) on Grandma' s Social Security... I feel sure a few months down the road, Good Lord willing and Covid and election cooperate, I will be able to enjoy my old favorite best sellers again.... However, I do now have another list of author's I enjoy every bit as much and will be continuing to read without a doubt! Now Mr. Akart, allow me to thank you for another almost sleepless night reading yet another of your spell binding and thrilling series.... (yawn, excuse me!) Be back in the morning!!!
Not some of Akart's best work. The story was still decent, but lacked much of the original excitement of some of his other work. All in all, it felt like an extended, if necessary, interlude between larger events in the series' plot.
The story follows Colton and his family as they leave Nashville for their bugout location in Shiloh. The encounter the expected resistance along the way: highwaymen, crooked mayor, ambushes, roadblocks, etc. The part involving a local high school football team acting as the resistance was about the high point of the trip. I did love their comms code, very original. Otherwise, it kind of ended on a slow note. If it were me, I would have tried to compress this book into a first half of a longer one. I imagine the next book ended up being too long to do so, but still. Akart could have included a bit more to fill out the story, rather then leaving this one wanting.
The Rymans are on the road heading to their friend Jake Allen's Shiloh Ranch in Tennessee. During their journey they encounter attempted ambush after ambush but when they reach Savannah under the control of Mayor Betty Jean Durham, the daughter of the late infamous Buford Pusser, her deranged son Junior and her minions, they realize it's not the safe haven the people there thought it was. Coach Joe Carey, his son Beau, Jimbo and Clay Bennett plus other members of the Tiger Resistance help them escape from the city. They then land in Salitto where they find friendly people who warn them that Ma Durham will continue to search for them yet offer the Ryman's sanctuary anyway, with thanks they decline and head out once again. Will they reach Shiloh Ranch safely and what will they find there?
Another fantasy installment of Akart's new "Blackout" series. I'm excited for book 4 which has not yet been published.
As the first 2, this was another action packed and fast paced book showing both the good and bad sides of humanity after a major crisis.
He is an excellent writer ... my only complaint was the side story which I will not say more to avoid spoilers. Those parts were not interesting although I see he felt them necessary for a plot point.
Akart's series about an unprepared man dealing with bugging out, Coronal Mass Ejections, and EMP effects takes a turn into Franklin Horton and A. American territory. We now get a bad guy that could last for a few books, hillbilly buddies who play guitar for fun, and it looks like formula fiction may be making a come back. While I was a little let down with this one, it still managed to surprise me and I'll definitely continue reading the series.
Great book, it was filled with at the end of your seat and heart racing excitement. The building of the characters certainly will make you feel like you know them, you can picture it clearly as they do what is needed to survive. That includes the marauders, as wrong as it may seem and I don’t agree, but they are playing the survival game. Looking forward to the next one.
The series continues to portrait possible devastation which people may actually confront in our world's future. The Ryman family has prepared for survival but find themselves between a rock and the hard spot. Human decency no longer exists as people hunt for those who have prepared. The Ryman family is strong to persevere in their survival. Another great story to captivate readers.
This is the third installment in the survival series The Blackout. Sometimes the action an slack off some mid-series, that is definitely not the case in this book. I felt book two had quite a bit of pulse pounding action, but this book had way more. It felt like as soon as I recovered the author was throwing another twisty loop into this roller-coaster ride. I highly recommend this book and this series. I will definitely be starting the next book tonight.
This book details traveling from their city home to somewhere they hope is safer. This had periods of lag with lots of driving and talking. There was a lot of background to Betty Jean Pusser but didn't end up really being all that relevant in this book (perhaps it will be more so later). Still a good series and when the next book comes out, I'm sure to read it.
I'm a total addict to Post Apocalyptic books and their scenarios. I particularly like Bobby Akart's books because he always has an optimistic and Christian point of view. Yes, he still covers all the gruesomeness of such an event and it's aftermath but with a twist. And his twists are what I like so much about his writing. I highly recommend Bobby Akart as a writer.
I'm amazed at the realism this author writes. I can imagine that life will do just want he wrote should our world loose power. another note taking book, I can't stop reading or thinking about what my family and I would do if we were faced with the same situation. I now realize I'm woefully unprepared for any disaster. I guess I too am going to jump on the prepper bandwagon.
I just finished book three and I loved it. Well written packed full of action and drama. Bobby Akart has a magical was of writing a story that wraps you in a hug and keeps you coming back for more. I can't seem to get enough of the Ryman family and the journey they are taking to protect themselves in the aftermath of a solar eruption. Get to Amazon and start reading
A BA. SYFY. Novel/The Blackout Series/The Departure/TheTrip
BA. has. penned the (3rd) in the Blackout Series which has the family maple ,land to leave for the farm near Savannah, TN. The trip is filled by numerous hazards related to insane women and men who are borderline crazy. This is an excellent read for the genre.....DEHS
Wow…the courage, perseverance, grit, loyalty and love of family make for an ample supply of a great series! Man’s inherent nature really shows forth in this particular book, best kind or malice. Trust and faith also factor in. Makes the reader wonder “what would I do?” Again, I heartily recommend this series for anyone who enjoys edge of your seat reading!
Traveling from the city to get away from a post apocalyptic emp attack. A family that isn't prepared for endtime travel and surviving day by day attacks by people who want to take away whatever they have even their lives.
I’m going to be unhappy when this series ends just as I was with his Yellowstone series. I love the characters, the storyline and all the twists and turns. It’s be one heck of a ride!!
This novel takes us on a journey from Nashville to a friend’s ranch close to Shiloh. Colton, Madison and Alex find themselves fighting off road pirates in an action packed adventure.
A little slower than the previous books but still good. Well written but perhaps a bit too many historical facts not quite woven in. So good to read of a place where survivors work together to increase their own chances of extended life!
A look into what will become of this country if we fall. I’m enjoying reading this series as I have Bobby’s others. Some of us must be prepared for what might come. On to the next one.
Each book of the series deals with problems of no power and no law. In this one we have law Gone awry, friendlies, enemies and bad weather. Looking forward to the rest of the series.
Waiting on Bobby Akart's new books is a tuff process, so to pass that long month I just reread the older series. The great thing is they are just exciting the second, third and forth time as they were the first.
Go Tigers! Walking or driving just keep moving as long as you have a plan and a place in mind. This over land trip is fill of twists and turns as we learn more each of the character and the new world.
