Meredith Gran lives and work in Brooklyn as a freelance comic artist & occasional animator. She's been drawing the webcomic Octopus Pie since 2007. She teaches a weekly webcomics course at the School of Visual Arts. She also wrote and drew the Eisner-nominated Adventure Time comic book spin-off, Marceline & the Scream Queens.
The author of these comics issues for Adventure Time is a good storyteller. I like how neat the pacing of the story and how readers could relate to the issue about friendship in these issue.
There's a particular quote that Ambassador Marro said in the last issue that could sum up this series, "It is natural to drift apart, my friend. We've come and gone from place of supreme beauty. But sometimes, miraculously, we drift back together again."
I love Marceline and Princess Bubblegum's friendship so much and this was so much deeper than I thought it was going to be. The art in this was stunning and I think I enjoyed the storyline in this much more than Marceline & the Scream Queens (I hadn't even realized this follows almost directly after that with mention of the tour). It was cool to see outside of Ooo too. I really enjoyed this and flew through it. I even squealed at the end.
wow, i really loved this. marceline is my favorite character from adventure time and this didn't disappoint. i love the development for marceline and bubblegum's relationship!!! i love bubbline!!!
the art style was very appealing to me and i adored the colors, plus the plot was interesting enough and i laughed out loud several times. i'm totally reading marceline and the scream queens now. finishing this comic made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside and i'm happy i read it
I just love Marceline and PB together. And the storyline was so great. Also, Finn...
#CramAThon challenge 2!
1. Read a book under 200 pages 2. Read a graphic novel 3. Read a book you never finished 4. Read a novella or short story 5. Read a book written in verse or poetry 6. Read five books total
After reading The Ooorient Express, I had little hope that this would be any good --- but it was excellent! The characters were true to the show. I fully laughed out loud several times. Adventure Time cracks me up, and this book captured that humour. Here's a little excerpt that had me giggling:
Marceline: It's hopeless. How am I supposed to live up to anybody's standards?! Jake: I'm right there with ya, Marce-Marce. That's why I don't try to live up to any standards! I impress myself just by obeying my most basic instincts! (He says, whilst stuffing his face with nachos.)
So funny! If you like the show, you'll like this book.
'Marceline Gone Adrift' is a standalone graphic novel, so it doesn't need to be read before or after another. In this story, a strange electrical current is making some people in Ooo act strangely. Princess Bubblegum has no choice but to use her inventions to blast Marceline into space, for the safety of her people. Marceline ends up on a planet of strange creatures and starts to reflect on her life and musical inspiration. Meanwhile, racked with guilt, Princess Bubblegum works hard to find a way to bring her back. This also included some flashbacks of times that Marceline and Princess Bubblegum's relationship wasn't always smooth.
Another cute Marceline comic book by Meredith Gran!
We see Marceline and Bubblegum butt heads, and in stopping Marceline, Marceline accidentally gets sent out in the far reaches of space. The book follows Marceline and her drift through space, while Bubblegum going out to rescue her.
All in all, a cute short story that explores the characters and universe in fun ways.
post apocalyptic scientific candy insanity meets space travel and extremely important non romantic intimacy that teaches readers that waiting for the kiss is stupid stuff.
2025 EDIT: 'Marceline Gone Adrift' might still be my favourite 'Adventure Time' comic. It has pretty much everything, and Marceline is the star, as is Bubblegum. It is about their relationship - that is the heart of this hilarious yet beautiful story.
Their love for one another reaches across the cosmos. Their bond is unbreakable.
The comic is massively creative and fun. Every joke and emotional moment works. It is also about loneliness and existentialism. I love it!
Final note: Marceline the Vampire Queen and musician is the best. She is everything. I adore her.
Final Score: 4/5
Original Review:
My first 'Adventure Time' comic, and of the seven I've read, this one is my favourite.
As well as being very funny and charming, 'Marceline Gone Adrift' is incredibly heartwarming, clever, and is all around a beautiful story. It has a bit of everything: girl power, space, space suits, spaceships, space bubbles, other planets, leaf aliens, dog aliens, insecure food monsters, music playing, music thievery, existentialism, and of course, the developing, blossoming LBGTQ relationship between Princess Bonnibel Bubblegum of the Candy Kingdom, and the vampire queen and musician Marceline! Their bond isn't merely cute, it literally transcends cosmology. So complicated and real for supposed silly cartoon characters - from a dystopian earth called Ooo.
Really, Bubblegum and Marceline are enough to make me want to read 'Adventure Time' comics, and watch the show in full - it's been too many years since I first saw it in bits and pieces on Cartoon Network - which I will, soon. I won't miss THAT modern cartoon pop culture phenomenon.
'Adventure Time: Marceline Gone Adrift' - a wonderful gift for fans and nonfans alike. It is colourful, pop candy, star-stunning, hilarious, touching, mesmerising, lesbian cartoon goodness for all ages!
A quick, fun, easy read. Fine Bubbline material. I must say I was a bit disappointed their backstory, but I was entertained nonetheless. Unrelated, I find it hard to see Cinnamon Bun the way he is portrayed in this comic compared to how he now in the show as FP's knight. Don't miss the old CB.
Doesn't come close to Marceline & the Scream Queens, but still a solid, entertaining read. I love anything Marcy-centric, especially one with plenty of Bubbline along the way.
While it's not as funny as Ryan North's work on Adventure Time, Meredith Gran nails the tone, and especially the feels with this six-issue mini-series. A strange magnetic field affects Marceline, and leads to her getting ejected into space (in Adventure Time logic - it does make sense). The separation recalls other issues Marceline and BFF Bubblegum have had over the years, in some touching flashbacks, as Bubblegum decides to rescue her friend. Meanwhile, Marceline makes some new friends in space and gets her musical mojo back. There's also a species called the Leaflans, who are involved in much of the space plot. There's also a B plot with a magnetic Cinnamon bun, an unscrupulous marketer making money of Marceline's 'Demise,' which is weird and funny. There's also a Jake and Finn subplot, but it's fairly weak and background. The main story between BG and Marceline is the heart of the story, in more ways than one, and it makes for an entertaining and touching story, with some choice moments [Infinity of Expletives].
A step up in every way from Scream Queens. The handle on every character is much more firm and sure, delving into Marcy and PB especially with much more maturity and depth. This dives into their early relationship and their present distance, and it’s juicy stuff. It’s much more emotionally resonant than Scream Queens. And like that, the way this came out during season 4, after Sky Witch established just how much Marceline means to her, and reinforces and echoes Varmints’ themes from two seasons later of how they drifted apart and it being Peeb’s biggest regret, is a bonus treat.
The B plots are much more fun than SQ’s and work as a breather from the relationship drama. Even the supporting cast like the alien dogs are much more heartwarming and engaging than the band was. This story slots in great as a bridge between Sky Witch and Varmints, and the flashbacks as relatively soon before the big breakup in Obsidian. It’s a worthy part of the Marceline-Bubblegum love story that’s grown more than anyone could’ve expected it to.
Adventure Time: Marceline Gone Adrift explores a little bit more of Marceline and Princess Bubblegum's relationship. It gives more details about the previous issues they had, which are mainly Bonnie's obsession with work and control, and the way these issues have shaped their current relationship, which they are still trying to fix. In the end, Marcy and Bonnie always find a way back to each other, and that's what I love so much about them!
I like the expansions of the Adventure Time world we get here (the corgi aliens are adorbs) I'm not sure how I feel about the angst. By taking the show out of OOO we lose the comic relief that are Finn and Jake in Marcy/P.Bubs stories & that makes things a little more overwrought. Still good, just not as much of the AT vibe (which is good & bad)
I can't say I found this Adventure Time graphic novel as good as the ones I've read previously, the art was great but there seemed to be quite a few holes in the story and I wasn't entirely sure how the characters ended up where they were.
Still, it was interesting getting an insight into the relationship between Princess Bubblegum and Marceline.
It was a great book and very entertaining and my favorite thing in this book was the little "tuff bone" critters. They where cute but I imagined marro with a deep voice for some reason. I'm sure it took for ever to develop this book -due to how good the art is- and was worth reading!Great book #ferralfinn4life
A really nice Adventure Time story. The conflict of Marcy and P-bubs is sad but that's because it also feels real. The art is good, the dialogue works, and it all feels like hanging out with old friends. Big recommend.
The Comic is amazing!! Marceline is my favorite character of the show. I love the relationship between Marceline and Bubblegum. It was very interesting seeing the flashback sequences. The art is really awesome!! This feels like an actual Adventure Time Episode
