Stranje House #3

Refuge for Masterminds

Rate this book
It’s 1814. Napoleon has escaped his imprisonment on Elba. Britain is at war on four fronts. And at Stranje House, a School for Unusual Girls, five young ladies are secretly being trained for a world of spies, diplomacy, and war…

Napoleon’s invasion of England is underway and someone at Stranje House is sneaking information to his spies. Lady Jane Moore is determined to find out who it is. If anyone can discover the traitor, it is Jane—for, according to headmistress Emma Stranje, Lady Jane is a mastermind.

Jane doesn’t consider herself a mastermind. It’s just that she tends to grasp the facts of a situation quickly, and by doing so, she’s able to devise and implement a sensible course of action. Is Jane enough of a mastermind to save the brash young American inventor Alexander Sinclair, her friends at Stranje House, and possibly England itself?

Note: This is the third book in a series that must be read in order.
If you are new to the Stranje House series, check out my review of book one, A School for Unusual Girls HERE
and my review of book two, HERE
---------------

Refuge for Masterminds is the third book in the Stanje House series by Kathleen Baldwin. I absolutely loved, the first book in the series, A School for Unusual Girls, and the second book, Exile for Dreamers. Each of the books is told from one of the five Stranje House girls point of views. Book one was Georgie, book two is Tess and book three is Jane. The series follows a single timeline and the events of the books take place one right after another, so the series must be read in order. But from each book we get to see the next set of events unfold from a different perspective. It is brilliantly done.

Refuge for Masterminds is Jane's story. As soon as I found out each of the books was going to be written from a different girl's perspective, I was itching for Jane's story. I love a good mastermind, and Jane was intriguing to me right from the very start. As soon as she told Georgie was sent to Stranje House because she was too profitable, I knew there were many secrets lurking beneath her surface. And we get to see so many of them come to light throughout this third installment in the Stranje House series. I am completely in love with these books. Each one builds on the last one, and they all flow seamlessly, while still each having their own distinct voices and perspectives. With each novel, I get to know the girls a little better.

The Stranje House series is quickly turning into one of my favorites. I love that it blends different genres effortlessly. It is part historical fiction/alternate history, party magic, and part secret spy school. I have never read another book quite like it. In Refuge for Masterminds, we are still smack dab in the middle of a whole lot of danger, and speaking of the danger, I have no idea how Kathleen Baldwin does it, but the plot just keeps becoming more and more fascinating for me. Now we are securely in the alternate history realm, but I am so fascinated by the way everything is unfolding. We also get to explore a new love interest in Refuge for Masterminds, with Jane and Alexander. I really liked the romance in this one. Jane and Alexander were another perfect pairing, in my opinion. I love all of the different personalities that we get to know, in both the ladies and the gentlemen.

I can't wait to learn more about Maya, and Sera in each of their stories. They are each so fascinating in their own regard. So different, and valuable in their own way. I love watching them all work together. There are plenty more adventure and danger for the final two girls to get into. I am hoping that this series is longer than five novels. I am ready for more, more, more. Katleen Baldwin does a fantastic job making them accessible and easy to follow, all the while creating a world and characters that are unputdownable. I am in love with the Stranje House novels. Seriously, in love.

Overall, Refuge for Masterminds is a brilliant addition to the Stranje House series. This is a series for readers and lovers of all different genres. I think everyone should read this series. There will be something in between these pages that you will fall in love with, I'm sure of it. Book three, A Refuge for Masterminds is Lady Jane's story- our resident mastermind herself. I am so pumped for the book. I have been absolutely loving it. I know I am going to be so sad when it is over because I will have to wait until next year for the fourth book. Kathleen Baldwin has not let me down yet. I am in love with this series!

Again, Miss Kathleen Baldwin has outdone herself!! This book was amazing! I absolutely loved all the suspense, the romance, the tension, and my goodness all that action! I loved how it made me physically tense up when worrying that she would get caught, gush over a very charming Mr. Sinclair, dread the anticipation of mounting danger, and squeal with excitement at all the action-packed scenes!

I really liked the introduction to all the new characters, and was very curious about Ladies Jersey, Castlereagh, and de Lieven! I can't wait to see more of them in upcoming books! While I don't think I loved Lady Jane's character quite as much as Georgie, I loved seeing the bit of character development. She really did fulfill her potential, though she couldn't even see it herself at first. And I positively adored the romantic tension between her and Mr. Sinclair!!! Honestly, it is so much fun getting to ship each girl with their own quixotic Adonis!😅🤣 Another thing I was quite delighted to see was all the action! Every interaction with the enemy was direct and both spine-tingling and electrifying! It is so exciting to see Lady Jane getting to use all that she has learned from Miss Stranje and being able to put these amazing skills to use!

I am still waiting on a little more about Ghost; I've been hoping to hear more about his character other than the fact that he is dark, deadly, and dangerous. While we've seen that those qualities are shared with his cohort, Lady Daneska, she at least has shown other defining qualities. I am rather eager to see what Ghost's true character is like, and hope it is revealed in a future installment of this series. One more thing I was a little disappointed about was But these very minor grievances did not stop me from giving 5 stars!! Loved this novel and cannot WAIT for the next one!!😆

REFUGE FOR MASTERMINDS is a steadily moving historical romance with delightful characters, plenty of danger, and a well plotted story that is sure to engage the reader from beginning to end. Highly recommended to historical romance readers who enjoy the mix of espionage and a boarding school to London setting!

I love this series! I particularly loved the banter between Jane and Alexander in this third book. It was so much fun and definitely made me laugh. They were both marvelous characters! I also adored their romance. Then there were the other characters, particularly these girls who have become like sisters. They have their own strengths and weaknesses and love interests, and care deeply for each other.

I love that each of the books in this series focuses more on one of the Stranje girls, but still weaves in all the characters and an overarching plot as they face Napoleon and his spies. The plot had some adventure and action, as well as a fairly constant feel of danger. The ending was climatically intense, as to be expected, and I loved how it all came together. It also concluded with a decent resolution while also leading quite nicely to the next book, which I am highly anticipating!

My only grievance would be that I didn't completely understand Jane's misgivings in trusting Miss Stranje. I also was a little confused by her not taking advantage of dismissing a contract until later on for some misguided reason or other. At least she figured things out in time.

In the end, was it what I wished for? This was another fantastic read and addition to this series! I enjoyed it from beginning to end!

Content: Some violence, but clean.

Of all the Stranj school girls, I think the one I'm most like Jane. I live the way she thinks and the way she scolds Alexander- and the way our loveable American representative teases her. All the romances are sweet, but theirs might be my favorite. It was also nice to see a love interest fibally step forward for Maya- it'll be gun to get both hers and Sera's stories. Though I wonder if I'll enjoy them as much as this one. Can't wait for book four so we can see what happens next in not only their personal stories, but also the political landscape- e sg pecially after that cliffhanger!

Note, this book had the least bad langauge of them all since Jane thought 'drat' was swearing, but some bad langauge does come out when the tension mounts.

Lady Jane Moore is considered a mastermind among her group of friends, all students at Miss Stranje's School for unusual girls. Jane doesn't consider herself a mastermind, merely managing and bossy! She wants to be like her hero, Miss Stranje, and give up everything to save England from Napoleon's evil clutches. Everyone knows there is a traitor at Stranje House and Jane is determined to find out who it is and keep secrets from getting to the villains. Only the girls of Stranje House know of the secret steam ship the American Alexander Sinclair has built with Jane's help. It is now ready to show the Admiralty, but not if Napoleon's henchmen find out about it. Jane must help come up with an alternate plan to get the ship to London. If that wasn't enough to weigh down her mind, Miss Stranje announces the girls will be going to London to participate in the Season! Jane flat out refuses to go. If she goes, her secret will come out and her dreams will be ruined! Mr. Sinclair is determined to get Jane to London and to learn to dance so they can dance together. Nonsense! Jane knows Alexander probably finds her bossy but perhaps considers her a friend at best. She wouldn't wish for or expect anything else. A romantic entanglement with a teasing American would get in the way of all Jane's plans! Can she use her extraordinary brain to solve all her problems?

I found this was the least interesting of the Stranje House novels so far. The action starts and stops a lot. I was able to put it down. I question how the author can sustain the suspense for two more novels. The big dramatic moment here seemed so obvious and though I was on the edge of my bed wondering HOW things would turn out, I pretty much knew the outcome. I wasn't surprised by the identity of the traitor because I too figured it out by process of elimination. Also Jane's talent is perfectly normal so there isn't really an underlying paranormal story the way there is with Tess. I figured out what Jane's secret must be and I didn't see why she was so dramatic about it. I think she misjudged her hero a bit. I wondered why an American would be helping the British fight Napoleon and how, when our countries were at war with one another, he could even get safely to England and back home again.

Don't get me wrong, I really liked Jane. I can relate a lot to her. I would be too intelligent for the time and too bossy. I could easily see myself reacting the way she did, especially with Alexander. I found her relationship with Alexander was too repetitive and slow. It continues from where they left off in Exile for Dreamers. I do understand why Jane put up walls around her heart and why she would be reluctant to love. Her story is kind of sad but not all that unusual for the world created by Regency romance novelists. At that time they didn't know anything about addiction and wouldn't have counselors available anyway. Jane got off relatively fine compared to some of her friends. Her brothers are over-the-top caricatures.

Alexander is a cute hero. He's very different from Heyer's archetypal heroes. More like Austen's Henry Tilney. Alexander knows how to push Jane's buttons. He's brilliant but I think she may be even more intelligent- intellectually speaking. Alexander is wiser in matters of the heart. He isn't a swoony hero but he's good for Jane. He helps her lighten up and not take herself so seriously.

My favorite character is still Tess. I absolutely love her with Lord Ravencross. (My mom thinks I have a thing for dark, brooding heroes). I also loved the scenes with the wolves. My heart broke when Tess wanted to do the right thing according to nature. I agree with her but my heart agrees with Jane.

My new favorite characters are the patronesses of Almacks. Yes Georgette Heyer's Regency world comes colliding with the fantasy world of Stranje House. Lady Jersey provided some comic relief. I did find it incredulous the ladies knew Miss Stranje and how they knew her. That seemed a little false given Lady Jersey's nickname!

Lord Harston was a huge surprise. I didn't really care for the introduction of him too create conflict. He seems to have a personality transplant or is Jane an unreliable narrator? Does she remember the events correctly or is his version of that day closer to the truth? We only have his word for it.

Daneska is getting more and more evil as the stories go on. She's truly a selfish, cold-hearted, cruel woman. She suits Ghost perfectly because he apparently doesn't have a conscience at all.

Sera and Maya's stories start to get fleshed out more. Maya's love interest is introduced. Maya seems to have some paranormal abilities that none of the other girls have. I'm really curious about her life in India and exactly what she learned from her family and whether her love interest knows what he is doing to her! I can't wait to read her book.

I recommend this series to teen girls, young adults and those who like alternate history and girl power stories. Though the book is part of a series and previous events alluded to, it can be read as a stand alone.

Eh, I suppose I was a bit burned out on this series, but just . . . the romance is one of those where the characters' bickering just makes it seem like they don't like each other. Jane has a big secret that she withholds from the reader for far too long.

And I'm not sure I quite buy her as a "mastermind." So much of being a mastermind--being able to predict events and calculate other people's actions--is life experience, which she doesn't have.

Refuge for Masterminds is the latest installment of the School for Unusual Girls series and the best one yet. The hallmark of this series is that each book has a different POV- there are five girls training to be spies in Regency England- and this time the focus is on Jane. Each girl has a unique skill and Jane's strength is her ability to see several steps ahead in any situation- hence the mastermind of the title. Of the five she also seems to be the one that Emma Stranje, the headmistress, is grooming to succeed her someday.

The story continues here shortly after the events of the second book, with Napoleon threatening England and their nemesis, Lady Daneska, pulling the strings. Daneska is a fabulous villain because she is a former student of Miss Stranje and she knows how the school operates. In the last book she came dangerously close to infiltrating the school and achieving her objective. Here the intrigue intensifies as the action shifts to London and the social scene.

All the supporting players are here, including Georgie (one of my favorites) and Alexander Sinclair, the brash America inventor who has stolen Jane's heart. Jane is no wilting flower though, she's sharp tongued and tough and I loved reading her perspective. As much as I liked Georgie's POV in the first book, I think this one is my favorite. The series seems to have hit a rhythm now and I'm left wondering who will pick up the narrative next- Sera or Maya? Both have intriguing abilities and would be fascinating to read about- but here the focus is squarely on Jane.

I liked the relationship between Jane and Sinclair a lot. There's just a whiff of scandal to it as they tiptoe around each other and their feelings- and again Jane's secret poses a huge hurdle to their possible happiness. I liked how this was handled, there's not a love triangle but there is another nobleman who has a past with Jane, and it didn't go how I expected. I always like it when someone you think you're going to hate earns your grudging respect. And I couldn't review this book without mentioning the Patronesses- three high ladies of society who fan themselves and preen but are tough as nails and not above packing a pistol or dagger in their reticule as need arises. They steal pretty much every scene they're in.

I noted a sequence on board a ship where I could almost smell the tar and feel the rocking of the boat, where a guttering oil lamp illuminates a shadowy cargo hold. I felt right there with her as she went through the ordeals and triumphs of her mission. This series keeps getting better and better and the author continues to show a fascinating alternative history where small changes in events could lead to vastly different outcomes. I am loving this series and the only problem I had with it was when it ended.

Another amazing Stranje House novel. I've loved this series since I discovered book one and I can't wait to see where it goes next.

This book focuses on Lady Jane (who's name always makes me think of Jane Gray, but she's not). Her special talent is that she's a mastermind. Basically she has a mind a bit like Sherlock's, with his ability to see people as players on a board and predict their moves. No, she can't make deductions like he can (that's Sera), but she is razor sharp and an awesome character to follow. I really enjoyed getting to know her as she faced her demons and learned to fall in love.

The plot is a continuation of the first two as the girls of Stranje House continue to work getting the steam boat to show to Prince George and keep Napoleon from gaining world domination. It was well paced and engaging the whole way through. The best part of these novels is the characters. They all have a life and energy on the page, plus I love their sisterhood and cleverness in a time when most women were encouraged to be silent and stupid.

I also have a brand new favorite quote from this book. "Miss Stranje never curses or uses strong language. She claims it is a device only employed by individuals with minds to weak to command suitably descriptive speech." Isn't it great? I just wish more people would do the same in their writing and movies.

A great book if you like realistic female characters, a mild Sherlock feel, and the early 1800s. You won't regret reading this series.

Refuge for Masterminds has so many swoony moments, humor, and a wonderful finale. Jane and Alexander are great leading characters. The story begins with the two of them together, right off the bat.

Lady Jane is proper and polished. I love how much like a governess she is, and how she's teased about it. She doesn't trust anyone enough to share her secrets or self doubts.

Alexander is a sweet American blundering the rules of Regency England. He's an inventor and his enthusiasm for his work is fantastic. He and Jane banter over their differences.

"All right, Lady Jane, what are you up to? I see cogs turning in that dangerous little head of yours."

I love how he teases Jane, but is protective if anyone says unkind things to her.

"'Who? Who else says you try their patience?' He demands this, as if no one else on earth has the right to say such things to me except for him. As if he will call out the blackguard..."

Love it! These two are so fun, especially trying to work together.

I enjoy the period details. I appreciate the way the girls and the guys work together (and Jane rolls her eyes if people only notice the guys' efforts, haha). The sisterhood of the girls in the school is sweet. There are fantastic (and funny) new characters, in addition to seeing my favorites again. Beautifully told. This is a fun adventure of wits, wills, courage and love.

I received a copy in exchange for an honest review.

Refuge for Masterminds is a fast-paced, humor-filled regency-era story about Lady Jane Moore.
Going into this book, I had already formed an opinion about Jane and the American inventor Alexander Sinclair. Alexander first appeared in Exile for Dreamers, book two in this series. He and Lady Jane have an interesting relationship, full of sarcasm and witty remarks that will keep you from ever becoming bored with the relationship subplot.
On that note, I enjoyed how the relationship between Jane and Alexander was never the sole focus of the book. We have plenty of scenes with politics, the other girls, Jane's backstory, and heart-pounding action. The author takes the time to throw in little bits of the other girls' love lives, which is refreshingly realistic.
Daneska and Ghost are back again, and they cause plenty of trouble for our main characters. Daneska wasn't as typical in this book, and getting to see more of Ghost's personality was a nice touch.
All in all, I very much enjoyed the this installment of the Stranje House series, and I'm looking forward to book four!

I greatly enjoy the premise behind these books, and the strong, spunky girls are quite an interesting lot. The story has lots of adventure and good attention to politics of the Regency period. However, I just don't enjoy it when novels written in the present tense (weren't the first two in past tense?), and it made it really hard to truly get into the story; as such, I noticed a lot more nit-picky grammatical and cultural errors than I might have otherwise (for instance, calling someone a cabbage is actually a term of endearment in France, not an insult).

It would be best to read books one and two first, as the books in this series pick up immediately where the others leave off, and even a few months in between reading them made it harder to keep track of who everyone was and their relationships.

I enjoyed the story, and so far it may be my favorite plot of the series--I'm just not a fan of the tense it's told in.

Another winner!

Can I just say how much I love first person writing??!?!?! It is fascinating, in a series such as this one, to get the "inside scoop" on what is really going on in each of the girls' brains. So much fun. I am really enjoying how each book puts the focus on one of the girls and how they got to be where they are today. The stories are brilliantly interwoven and make each girl shine. Along with the lovely ladies are the swoon-worthy men. Each is unique and perfectly suited for their "unusual" girl. The author excels at the #FlirtingNotFlirting that takes place and the conversations make this old lady blush with anticipation.

I am really enjoying this series and know that it will be one of the few book series that I will HAVE TO revisit when the series ends, just so I can relive all the magic again. ;)

I actually enjoyed this one, it was a nice smooth read. It wasn’t my favorite in the series and I think that’s just because I wasn’t all too interested in Jane’s character. Her and Alexander were a little too simple for my taste. I did really like the storyline with her secret though. It was a really good idea and I actually wanted her to end up with that guy instead of Alexander! Which she should write like at least a novella about that guy cause he was really nice! My last little two cents is that she changed into present tense with this book and that bothered me. I had tried to read this book a few years ago and just couldn’t do it because of the tense but I was able to do it this time! But it still bothered me :(

I love the Stranje House series. I don't think I like Lady Jane as much as Georgie and Tessa. She is brilliant but a bit of a drama girl. She has this, in her mind, huge dark secret but when it is revealed it ends up not being that big of a deal. I enjoyed the role the Patronesses played in the plot.
As usual I love Kathleen Baldwin's afterword. We never know who we are affecting and how.

I thought this book was truly wonderful. I have so enjoyed reading of the adventures of Miss Stranje’s girls this past year. I’m not sure if any other Stranje House novels are in the works, but I do hope so. I liked seeing Jane’s point of view for the story. Georgie was a curious and fiery young thing, Tess was a tormented and tough-as-nails girl, but Jane was practical. I have to admit, she did remind me of myself quite often. She doesn’t give herself enough credit for her talent. She doesn’t understand how anyone could love her. I can relate. Just so you know, I ship Alexander and Jane wholeheartedly. I’ve actually noticed that all the Stranje girls have started to kindle their romances every time the book gets tossed to them. Georgie and Sebastian are my absolute OTP. Talk about goals. I do also ship Tess and Gabriel as their sexual tension is brutal. I would love nothing more than the next book to center on Sera because then we could see her relationship with Mr. Chadwick blossom. And now we’ve approached Maya and Lord Kinsworth. My oh my, trouble indeed. *Laughs mischievously* I do so love how each book delves into the backstory of that particular protagonist. I knew about Jane’s ignoramous brothers, but I had no idea that her family’s obsession with gambling was so strong that her parents would wed her off to pay off their debts. (Horrid people for not realizing how special Jane really was.) I was surprised and elated to find that her betrothed, Lord Harston, was a gentleman that would free her of their contract. As well, he even respected Mr. Sinclair and alerted Jane to his true feelings for her. Because guess what, Lady Jane? It’s not so hard for those around you to love you! I’m not sure why Jane was so embarrassed about her ties to Lord Harston. She was ashamed of breaking her promise, even though she herself did not promise it. She believed that Miss Stranje and the others would scold her and shut her out. I don’t know in what twisted state of mind you could ever think that, but she did. Which is why I was so relieved that Jane finally spilled the beans just before the end. She needed to let out that knowledge that had been weighing her down for so long and cry in the arms of those who loved her. I do so love a good emotional moment. Anyway, I’m a little skeptical about Alice the maid being the mole. I know there’s a lot of damning evidence and their schemes went mostly according to plan with the information they fed her, but I feel like the fact that Alice was never truly exposed throughout the entire book says something. I just mean that it could be someone else. Mind you, I said could. I absolutely adore that Jane said “mind you” to the reader quite often. I thought it was funny, considering that I myself do the same thing. I found it interesting that so much of the book took place not at Stranje House at all, but rather in London. It was different to see the beau monde in all its glory. You know, I had forgotten that the Stranje House books are written in present tense. It threw me off for a while, but I think I might like it. Though, I still love past tense. I was proud of Alexander and his Mary Isabella. Made it all the way to the big city in little pieces and made its debut without a hitch. Other than its maker breaking his toe, that is. I still can’t believe Mr. Sinclair was so stubborn as to kick the bomb off the ship. *Sighs* Still, he’s a good man. And I couldn’t have imagined a better match for her, especially considering the poisonous men in her early life. I didn’t really like her brothers all that much. Francis seemed to always be working an angle and Bernard was just his lap dog. It was almost as if Francis didn’t even care for her. Bernard cared for her, but he was a couple crayons short of a box. The most strange characters of the book, in my opinion, were the Patronesses. Lady Castleragh, Lady Jersey, and Lady de Lieven. Odd little friends of Miss Stranje’s. Amusing themselves with Jane and her drama, acting splendidly pretentious much of the time; I’m not sure my exact opinion of them just yet. We’ll have to wait and see. I was breathtaken by the moment when Jane and Alexander kissed on the way to Haversmythe House with Harold the horse. Finally, it had happened. I had been anticipating it since the day they first met and quarreled, and desperately so when they were on the cliffs taking apart the Mary Isabella. Even better, Jane admitted her feelings for him right before he almost left for America. Yay! They are together at last and don’t think I wasn’t squealing with excitement when the book ended with them kissing again because I was. I liked that we were able to hear more of Maya’s tale in this novel, but what I really want is for her to have a fifth book center on her. Is it so much to ask to finish out an amazing series that has left the world on a cliffhanger for a year and three months? Ah, well. If I haven’t already acknowledged this, I’ll do it now. I hate Lady Daneska. With every ounce of my beating heart. Oh, and Ghost, too. Even more so after they kidnapped and hurt Jane. Ghost choked her, cut off her hair, and stabbed her in the thigh. I am absolutely seething right now. DON’T. YOU. DARE. TOUCH. A. HAIR. ON. HER. HEAD. I want him dead and I want to kill him myself. And Daneska, the traitorous little chienne, threw a knife at Jane. So, yeah, I hate both of them with a burning passion. Oh! Off topic, but this has been floating around my brain for a little while. What is it about Haversmythe House? Who died and why and why did Miss Stranje pick this particular house? She claims the rent was cheap, but I feel a greater story behind the wings here. Also, I’m wondering how long they’ll stay in London. After the stupid Prince Regent’s announcement at the girls’ coming-out party about how he plans to negotiate with Napoleon, it seems they may not be going any place soon. I feel very empathetic for England’s citizens. Having a naïve and childish fat man as a ruler can be harrowing. Nevertheless, we must persist. Stay strong, Stranje girls. Switching gears, let’s talk about the puppies! I adore Jane’s relationship with Moonlight. It’s weird that Jane bonds with her because she thinks they are both unnecessary in their packs, but they make an adorable pair. I hope that Georgie does figure out a way to help Moonlight walk successfully. I was taken aback by reading about Tess’ dreams from someone else’s point of view. After the last book, I guess I became used to the feeling of Tess’ terror and her need for speed to rid herself of the fear and destruction from her prophetic powers. Okay, so quite obviously, I loved this book. I’m sad that there may not be any more but fingers crossed. I recommend this book to those wondering about love and how it fits into your life.

Can I scream?? YES YES AND YES this is the story I have been waiting for and man I really dont want this series to end! I really love how these books that even though its in a different POV you dont miss anything as the series goes along its way. I really love this way of storytelling. And this one I just couldnt down!

I love Lady Jane! Her mind is so amazing and this book in her POV was so GOOD! I will defintly be rereading these again soon! I was so sad that I didnt have time to share much (ANYTHING) about this book on my social media (sickness is running rampid!) So I hope to have the time soon to do an entire three day share about these books! Because that is just how good they are!

This one wither or not you have read this series you need to!! This one worked so well, the plot/story, characters, and setting came together so flawlessly! I really hope that these do well I want a movie or a tv series! If you are a fan of Historical Fiction and Young Adult then this is the series for you.

Jane and Alexander were a dream come true. I loved that this book gave me many laughs throughout and I really loved their conversations. The romance between then was so cute I just couldn't get enough of it. I love how Baldwin takes these girls and weaves a story with each one taking us ever closer to the end that I know is coming. This one has all the action you need for a great story and I was on the edge of my seat for most of it. This one ends very well just as I knew it would. It was exciting and tied up all the loose ends within this story as well as getting us ready for the next book. I really cant wait to see who we get next. I never want this series to end!

This was a breathtaking FANTASTIC read from start to finish.

Kathleen we need a spin-off series wth the leading guy's POVs now LOL.

This is Lady Jane's story. Lady Jane was sent to Stranje house by her older brothers after her parents' deaths. She thinks of herself as plain and average and can't figure out why her friends love her. However, she is being groomed to be a mastermind since she has a strong ability to plan and think three or four steps ahead of everyone. This comes in quite handy since the young ladies of Stranje House and the patronesses of British society are all spies trying to keep Napoleon from conquering England in this alternate history story.

Lady Jane also has a secret that she has been keeping since just before her parents died. This secret makes her believe that she needs to stay away from London and society or face changes she doesn't want in her life.

Lady Jane is also falling in love with inventor Alexander Sinclair who is a brash American who has developed a working steam boat which could alter the course of the war but only if they can get the prototype to London and the Navy before it is captured by the evil Lady Daneska and her partner the Ghost.

The banter between Jane and Alexander was entertaining as the two sparred. I liked the relationships between the girls at Stranje House. They have become the family that Jane never had since hers were dissolute gamesters who never valued her.

Fans of alternate history and intrepid young women will enjoy this third book in the Stranje House series.

Set in 1814 England during the Napoleonic era, Refuge for Masterminds focuses on Lady Jane Moore, one of the five young and gifted women sent to Stranje House, a school for unusual girls. Their families believe these girls are having their “unusualness” knocked out of them when in actual fact their gifts are being used and the girls secretly trained and prepared to become spies. In this third installment of the Stranje House series, it is up to Lady Jane and her sharp mind to find out who is passing information on to Napoleon’s spies. Not only is discovering the truth going to thwart Napoleon from invading England but it will also stop an attack on her love interest, American inventor Alexander Sinclair, whose prototype of his uncle’s steamship is set to be introduced to the British Admiralty.

Lady Jane, as the other girls and her headmistress Emma Stranje are witty, strong and passionate heroines, who use their varied gifts while working behind the scenes (that is, behind the men with power) to make sure the right decisions are made that will affect their country or to avert national disaster.

Refuge for Masterminds moves at a fast pace from the first page and doesn’t stop. Although it is written with a young adult audience in mind, it is a fun and enjoyable novel and will appeal to adult readers.

Where do I start? Well to be perfectly honest, I really didn't think that I would enjoy reading from Jane's perspective, as she seemed perfectly stuck up and pushy. But as I started to read and see her story unfold and read about her secrets, I had a better understanding of her and I absolutely loved her story.

Lady Jane has a few secrets. Secrets about her past with her parents, her brothers and a certain Lord. Miss Stranje decides to take the girls to London for a coming out party and Jane is persistent on not going due to her many secrets that she doesn't trust anyone with. But in the end, these secrets come out, as all secrets do.

We also see more of a romance coming out between Jane and Alexander, as well with Sera and Maya too. There is still much action in this, and Ghost and Lady Daneska are still at it, trying to take over London with Napoleon. This time, however, Jane is the target as well as Alexander.

For me, this left it wide open for maybe a fourth book? Which I'm crossing my fingers for as I would love to see what unfolds between Maya and Lord Kinsworth and Sera and Mr Chadwick. So for now, I'm holding out hope that the wonderful Mrs Kathleen Baldwin is writing that fourth book as I'm typing this up.

'Refuge for Masterminds' is the third installment in an exciting YA historical fantasy series. It picks up where the last book left off - with our main character, Lady Jane, trying to find a way to tip the war in England's favor. The story is told from Lady Jane's point of view, which gives us a great inside look at her character and all the different aspects of her personality - thoughts, fears, dreams, emotions, desires, etc. - and made her a fantastic main character who was easy to identify with right from the start. As with the other books, the plot took a little bit to pick up and suck me into the author's world. But once the pace quickened and things heated up - I was hooked until the very end. Aside from that one small issue, the writing continued to be well done with great imagery and descriptions. I loved watching Lady Jane and the others grow both as separate characters and in their relationship with each other. The plot was fascinating - a wonderful blend of history, fantasy, action and adventure, and even romance. I definitely recommend this book (and series) to readers who enjoy fantasies as well as those who enjoy historical fiction, adventure, and action.

Disclosure: I received a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

First Read: This was a really good book. Lady Jane Moore has a secret that she has never told anyone and plans to keep it that way. But when Miss Stranje decides to take the girls to London to introduce then into society, Jane finds that keeping the secret is going to be harder than she thought. She finds that the only way the keep people from finding out is to face it, but that will be hard. If no one finds out about Jane's secret, the better everything will be, but what if the only other person who knows her secret plans to make it big???
Second Read: Jane is my favorite of all the girls at Stranje House. Her personality and character are so strong and she stands up for what she believes is right. I love how her relationships with everyone grow and change over the course of the story.

This is another one of those books where I didn't know it was the third book and not the first one. But with that said I wasn't really lost while reading it. I found myself completely wrapped up in this storyline and characters and it made me want to go back and read the first two books so I could understand all the girls and the Stranje House school where they are being trained in the world of spies and war. I really like all the girls they are each strong in their own way but they love one another like sisters. I highly recommend this series to anyone who loves a great story line, characters that you will love and connect to, danger, and love.
