"Sometimes I think I am Judy Moody," says Megan McDonald, author of the Judy Moody series, the Stink series, and THE SISTERS CLUB. "I'm certainly moody, like she is. Judy has a strong voice and always speaks up for herself. I like that."

For Megan McDonald, being able to speak up for herself wasn't always easy. She grew up as the youngest of five sisters in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Her father, an ironworker, was known to his coworkers as "Little Johnny the Storyteller." Every evening at dinner the McDonalds would gather to talk and tell stories, but Megan McDonald was barely able to get a word in edgewise. "I'm told I began to stutter," she says, leading her mother to give her a notebook so she could start "writing things down."

Critically acclaimed, the Judy Moody books have won numerous awards, ranging from a PUBLISHERS WEEKLY Best Book of the Year to an International Reading Association Children's Choice. "Judy has taken on a life of her own," the author notes, with nearly 3 million Judy Moody books in print. Interestingly, the feisty third-grader is highly popular with boys and girls, making for a strong base of fans who are among Megan McDonald's strongest incentives to keep writing, along with "too many ideas and a little chocolate." And now -- by popular demand -- Judy Moody's little brother, Stink, gets his chance to star in his own adventures! Beginning with STINK: THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING KID, three more stories, and his own encyclopedia, STINK-O-PEDIA, Stink's special style comes through loud and strong -- enhanced by a series of comic strips, drawn by Stink himself, which are sprinkled throughout the first book. About the need for a book all about Stink, Megan McDonald says, "Once, while I was visiting a class full of Judy Moody readers, the kids, many with spiked hair à la Judy's little brother, chanted, 'Stink! Stink! Stink! Stink! Stink!' as I entered the room. In that moment, I knew that Stink had to have a book all his own."

More recently, Megan McDonald has recalled some of her own childhood with the warmth, humor -- and squabbles -- of three spunky sisters in THE SISTERS CLUB.

Megan McDonald and her husband live in Sebastopol, California, with two dogs, two adopted horses, and fifteen wild turkeys that like to hang out on their back porch.

12th book read in 2018.

Number 563 out of 672 on my all time book list.

Way to much educational stuff added in for no plot purpose.

Honestly, this series interests neither my inner child or myself. And this episode has a confusing message. Why do the parents think it's wrong to complain to companies? The companies obviously appreciate the feedback.

I have enjoyed reading the Stink books so far. I've been reading them to my two young boys, and they have loved them so much. The relationship between Stink and his sister Judy is a love/hate relationship, and it cracks me up. At times they help each other. At times they work together. At times they play pranks on each other. At times, they are sick of each other. At times they try to get each other in trouble. It reminds me very much of my own relationship with my sister. After each chapter, there is a comic that has been written by Stink. These comics are silly, but my kids love them. They make me read the comic part three or four times. This is a great read aloud book/series for young boys, I would guess any elementary school aged, although my three year old enjoys this as a bedtime story. What is cool about this book is that even though it is for kids, I still enjoyed reading it. It is well written, has great characters, has funny scenes, and really captures the essence of being a kid.

When his “World’s Biggest Jawbreaker” doesn’t break his jaw, a disgusted Stink sends a letter of complaint to the candy company; when he receives an apology and a box of 21,280 jawbreakers in return, he is inspired to write even more letters in hopes of receiving more surprises. The large typeface and frequent black-and-white cartoon illustrations will draw readers in; the entertaining story will keep them turning pages. Stink is a well-developed and believable main character, as are his family members and friends. Teachers will appreciate this short chapter book for its potential to inspire kids to practice their letter-writing skills and for Stink’s hand-drawn “Idiom Comics” that appear at the end of each chapter, each one depicting an idiom taken literally. This is a first-purchase for elementary libraries.

Stink and the incredible super- galactic jawbreaker by Megan Mcdonald is a really intersecting book. It starts off when Stink writes a letter to a candy company and receives 10 pounds of free samples , which sets him off on a letter writing spree in search of more freebies. His parents disapproves, but stink has more on his mind, such as wearing pajamas on pajama day at school, why his friend Webster is acting grumpy with him. I rate this book a 3/5. Not the best book but for younger kids I would recommend it.

Stink is onto his next adventure. He goes to the store and a galactic jawbreaker. He eats it non stop. When he finishes he is disappointed that it didn't break his jaw. To fix his problem he wrote a letter to the company and the company sent him a large supply of jawbreakers for free. Stink took advantage and sent letters to multiple companies to get free stuff in return.

Stink and the Incredible Super-Galactic Jawbreaker
Genre: Realistic Fiction
Grade Level: 1-2
Synthesis: Stink and the Incredible Super-Galactic Jawbreaker is part of a book series from the character Stink, related to Judy Moody another famous book series for young children. The book begins with Stink buying “the world’s largest jawbreaker” but after much disappointment, Stink writes a letter to the company. In return he receives a gift and so Stink begins on a journey of writing letters to more companies to receive free stuff. However, from so many letters and packages received, Stink misses a small but important letter. This simple mistake causes his best friend,Webster, to be upset with Stink and Stink needs to find out why. After figuring out why Webster was upset, Stink is able to fix the problem and rekindle his friendship! This book would be a good independent read option because it is a small chapter book that students can read little by little during independent reading time. For first and second graders, the book has small chapters with varying levels in partial to full pages of text as well as pictures. This makes the book a bit challenging but also possible for students to comprehend and read on their own.

How and Why: As previously mentioned, I think that this book would be a good option for students to have in my classroom library to read during independent reading time. The book follows a character of the same age as the desired grade level which can make it more personal for students to follow. I also think that this book could be a good introduction into chapter books for younger grades due to its smaller size in chapter lengths and text on each page. The book has good vocabulary that most first or second graders would be able to read while also including new words such as “idioms” in this book specifically. With a table of contents, and chapter title pages, students can practice on using and understanding these features to assist in their reading. Stink and the Incredible Super-Galactic Jawbreaker is an example of realistic fiction because it follows a made-up character through events that may be fake, but could actually happen in real life. All his stories, including this one, follow everyday events of a young kid which can make it more relatable for readers in first or second grade.

Stink gets a super Jawbreaker at a candy store with a gift certificate, but after a week of slurping and sucking on it, he finishes it, but is annoyed that it didn't break his jaw! He decides to write a letter to complain to the company and in return they send him a giant box with an assortment of Jawbreaker candies, though they make sure to tell him they won't "actually" break his jaw. After this unexpected windfall, Stink writes to other companies who's products he has been disappointed in, with similar results. However, with all his boxes and notes, he miss something very important and has to make it right.

Okay, the first Stink book, I though was "meh." Wasn't terrible, wasn't great, didn't really stick with me, except I remember not being thrilled with how he and his sister treated each other. This one is SO MUCH better! Stink is considerate to others (eventually), apologizes when he makes mistakes, get's along with his sister Judy much more happily (I mean, still sib squabbles, but they do nice things for each other too); it was just a better story. I almost gave up on this series after book one, but think I'll stick around for more of Stink's adventures.

No content issues; a child gets hit with a fist by another kid, but it was an accident and they immediately apologize.

I barely finished reading this with my daughter for her weekly reading and summary assignment. She and I both enjoyed the narrative. Stink was a very clever child. He and his sister went to the candy store one day and he bought a huge “galactic” jawbreaker. His Sister was a bit upset and envious of him because she didn’t receive any candy. Stink thought the jawbreaker was supposed to literally split his jaw. When it, didn’t he wrote a missive to the company complaining about his disappointment in the candy. He received several jawbreakers of all sorts for writing the letter. He became obsessed with the letter writing and receiving free stuff. His sister grew even more frantic when he wouldn’t share with her.

Finally, something changed Stink from the selfish person he was to a giving person. It was his friend Webster. Beneath all of Stink jawbreakers were an invitation to Webster’s birthday party, but Stink didn’t see it until the last minute because of all of his candy. When he finally found out why his best friend was mad, he threw him a birthday party and got all of the jawbreakers to school for Webster.

The story taught my daughter a lesson in being humble and giving. I really loved it. Another good lesson for kids to learn.

Stink and the Incredible Super-Galactic Jawbreaker [Stink #2] / written by Megan McDonald; illustrated by Peter H. Reynolds -- Cambridge, Massachusetts : Candlewick Press, c2006. (128 pages)

SUMMARY: Stink gets a ten-pound box of 21,280 jawbreakers (for FREE!), just for writing a letter to the candy company! Soon, he's writing more letters...and the packages of free stuff keep coming. Among all those packages, it's easy to miss a small but very important envelope... (bookjacket)

REVIEW: I think I like this one even better than the first title -- or course I like anything that has to do with candy, especially jawbreakers (my favorite is Willy Wonka's Gobstoppers). I also like the reference to ALEXANDER AND THE TERRIBLE, HORRIBLE, NO GOOD, VERY BAD DAY...because that was what Stink was having (x2 days).

FORMAT: Large font and lots of white space on the page that will make this an easier title for reluctant or hi/low readers. The illustrations are great and add much to the character of Stink as well as filling up space and making the book not seem to be so many pages. Also includes one page comics created by Stink for the reader to enjoy.

NOTE: Stink is the brother of Judy Moody who has her own series and was so popular that he got to be the star in his own series

Join Stink Moody as he tries to eat his mammoth jawbreaker. Thinking that the name “jawbreaker” will actually break his jaw, Stink becomes upset when he finishes it and his jaw is still not broken. Frustrated, he writes a letter to the manufacturer and receives thousands of jaw breakers from the company. Stink continues to write letters to try and earn free items. Readers will be drawn into Stink’s can do and optimistic spirit as well as his comics that can be found at the end of each chapter. This book is a short chapter books so it is good for young readers. In a classroom this would be great for a class read out loud in young grades because it would be a great introduction to chapter books. After finishing the book the students could work on their letter writing and each write a fake letter to a company trying to persuade them to give them some free item. Aside from the letter writing aspect, this book is good for young students to read because it talks about friendship and how to avoid being selfish because of a conflict that occurs between Stink and his best friend during the story.

This book is about a boy whose name is, strangely enough, stink. One day he went to a candy store with some money he won, and bought a humongo jawbreaker (which he actually thought would break his jaw). And so, when he finally finished the jawbreaker, he was really really mad that it didn’t break his jaw. Then he wrote an angry-letter to the candy store, talking about how he really wanted it to break his jaw, and how disappointed was when it didn’t. then in response to the letter, the candy store sent him over ONE-THOUSAND JAWBEAKERS!!, and a reply that basically said, “sorry it didn’t break your teeth, how about these?” then he did exactly what any other kid would do, and hoarded all the candy he got for himself. After a while he decided to use what happened as an easy way to get a buncha free stuff from other places. He sent more angry-letters to more places, and his idea worked unexpectedly well. That is, until his mom found out and banned him from writing letters. The next day, he noticed that his best friend was VERY cross, and realized that he forgot to go to his birthday party! How will he make it up to his best friend?

Stink has bought an incredible super-galactic jawbreaker at the local store but he is not impressed when he finds it does not break his jaw. After a letter of complaint to the company that made it he finds a package of free sweets on his doorstep and starts to write more letters for which he receives more packages. But when there's a dozen or so packages on your doorstep it's easy to miss letters that come for you and when Stink got to school the next day his best friend was mad but he didn't know why, was it because of him or was he just in a mood?
This book was very interesting and I liked that his sister Judy Moody was in it as I like that character from her series.

After winning a gift certificate from the Whistle Stop Candy Shop Stinks buys a jawbreaker, that doesn't live up to is motto. Stink uses his newly learned letter writing skills, and receives 21.280 free jawbreakers. Stink then begins writing letters, and gets an assortment of free goodies. In his glee, he ignores a plain package that was addressed to him and almost loses his best friend. With the help of his father, and teacher, Mrs. Demptster, Stink comes up with an idea to make things right. This story is loaded with idioms.

it was a good book because there were lots of characters, and had lots of conflict. 1st: his sister, Judy, LOVES manipulating Stink, and tries to get Stink into buying something for her, and says that she'll get Stink into trouble by telling their dad that Stink is acting like a kid in a candy store, which he was. 2nd: Stink said that was an idiom, which was true. Judy thought he had said that she was an idiot. that was on the bottom of his "problems chain." It was invigorating.

Our friend Mr 7 doesn't like the Stink books but Miss 6 decided to give them a try. The first one we picked up was about candy and free stuff (and the importance of friendship!) which she definitely enjoyed listening to.

Miss 6 and I like to explore different books and authors at the library, sometimes around particular topics or themes. We try to get different ones out every week or so; it's fun for both of us to have the variety and to look at a mix of new & favourite authors.

Stink had a big jaw barker and it was so big it couldn't fit in his mouth. Then it finally got small enough to fit in his mouth and Stink thought it was a scam because it didn't break his jaw.Stink wrote a letter complaining about the jaw breaker and the company sent Stink 20,000 jaw beakers. Then stink started writing letters to other companies complaining and started to get free stuff.

A cute, quick read.
Just like the first book in this series, it was a good read, but I didn't like it as much as the Judy Moody books. The events in the Stink books feel more superficial than those in the Judy Moody series. I did like that Judy appeared a little nicer in this book in comparison to the first one (and less animal cruelty).
This was a nice read.

I've surprised myself with how much I'm enjoying this series. 7-year-old son and I are reading aloud together, and this is the perfect sweet spot of character his age (and reminds me of him) and it infuses things he's been learning in school this year (2nd grade). We will definitely continue with this series.

This book suits target-age boys perfectly. It intersperses easy-to-read chapters about a sciencey, goofy, sometimes gross second grade boy with non-sequitur comics "drawn" by the character. The story is heavily layered to educate about letter-writing, idioms, and apologies as well as moving through the layers of plot. The humor is, well, for second grade boys. McDonald and Reynolds do it again.
