একথা আর বলার অপেক্ষা রাখে না, সর্ব অর্থেই নেতাজি সুভাষচন্দ্র বসু ইতিহাসপুরুষ। ভারতের স্বাধীনতা সংগ্রামে তাঁর অবদান অপরিমিত। তাঁর সমগ্র জীবন কল্পিত উপন্যাসের চেয়েও কৌতূহলোদ্দীপক। বাল্যকাল থেকে অন্তর্ধান পর্যন্ত সুভাষচন্দ্রের জীবনে যা কিছু ঘটেছে, তার মধ্যে জীবনভাবনার শ্রেষ্ঠ মুহূর্তগুলো নিহিত ছিল। অপার বিস্ময় যেন স্তম্ভিত হয়ে আছে তাঁর জীবনের প্রতিটি পর্বে। ‘মহানায়ক’ উপন্যাস সেই মহাজীবনের কাহিনি। ইতিহাসের প্রেক্ষাপটে, অনুসন্ধিৎসু গবেষণার সনিষ্ঠ প্রয়োগে মূল মরাঠি ভাষায় লেখা এই জীবনোপন্যাসে মূর্ত হয়ে উঠেছেন মহানায়ক নেতাজি।

নেতাজি সুভাষচন্দ্র বসুর জীবনের কতটুকু মিথ, আর কতটুকু সত্যি, কতটুকু কুয়াশা, আর কতটুকু দ্বিপ্রহরের প্রখর সূর্যালোক— এইসব জটিল ধাঁধার কিছুটা সমাধান হয়েছে, কিছুটা আজও হয়নি, কিছুটা হয়তো কোনোদিন হওয়া সম্ভব নয়। কিন্তু একটা ব্যাপারে বিন্দুমাত্র সন্দেহ নেই। অবিভক্ত ভারতের স্বাধীনতা-সংগ্রামের ইতিহাসে তাঁর মতো বৈচিত্র্যময় এবং ঘটনাবহুল জীবনের উদাহরণ আর একটিও নেই।

সুভাষচন্দ্র ছিলেন আজন্ম-বিপ্লবী। পারিবারিক স্বচ্ছলতা এবং নিজস্ব প্রতিভার স্পর্ধায় তিনি অতি অনায়াসে একটি আরামের জীবন বেছে নিতে পারতেন। ইংরেজ রাজত্বের সবচেয়ে উঁচুপদের চাকরি পাওয়ার জন্যে যে ICS পরীক্ষা দিতে হতো, সেই পরীক্ষায় তিনি চতুর্থ স্থান অধিকার করেছিলেন। অতি দুর্লভ এবং আপাত-লোভনীয় সেই চাকরিতে তিনি যোগদান করেননি, পরাধীন দেশের প্রতি কর্তব্যের আহ্বান তাঁকে টেনে নিয়ে গেছে অন্য ভবিতব্যের দিকে।

কর্মজীবনের শুরুই হয়েছে যাঁর এরকম অবিশ্বাস্য ত্যাগের মধ্যে দিয়ে, সেই মানুষটার বাকি জীবনের রূপরেখা আমরা সহজেই আন্দাজ করতে পারি। কিন্তু আমাদের সবচেয়ে দুরন্ত কল্পনাও তাঁর জীবনের বাস্তব কাহিনিকে স্পর্শ করতে পারেনা। অতিমানবিক অকল্পনীয় এক নাটকীয় জীবন কাটিয়েছেন তিনি।

যখন মূলধারার রাজনীতি করেছেন, তখন স্বয়ং গান্ধীজির নির্দেশ অমান্য করেছেন বারবার। কংগ্রেসের রাজনৈতিক দর্শন যখন ডুবে আছে অহিংসার কোমল নরম এঁটেল মাটির কাদার গভীরে, সেই সময় তিনি বারবার বলেছেন, হাত পেতে ভিক্ষা চাইলে স্বাধীনতা লাভ করা যাবেনা। প্রয়োজন সার্বিক সংগ্রামের। তাঁর নিজের কথায় : "No real change in history has ever been achieved by discussions."

এই বিকল্প "উগ্র" মনোভাবের কারণে প্রায় প্রত্যেক প্রথমসারির কংগ্রেস নেতার বিরাগভাজন হয়েছিলেন তিনি। শুধু ব্রিটিশরাই তাঁকে আটকানোর চেষ্টা করেনি, নিজের দলেও তাঁকে ব্রাত্য করে রাখার, তাঁকে মাথা তুলতে না-দেওয়ার আপ্রাণ চেষ্টা করা হয়েছিলো। ব্রাত্য হয়েছেন তিনি মৃত্যুর পরেও। রিচার্ড অ্যাটেনবরো পরিচালিত বিশ্ববিখ্যাত "গান্ধী" ছবির একটা ফ্রেমেও সুভাষচন্দ্রকে দেখা যায়নি। গান্ধীর জীবনে সুভাষচন্দ্র নেই, ভাবা যায়!

অজস্র বাধাবিপত্তি সত্ত্বেও একটা অবিশ্বাস্য জীবন যাপন করেছিলেন তিনি, সেই জীবনের তুলনা সমগ্র পৃথিবীর মুক্তিসংগ্রামের ইতিহাসে খুঁজে পাওয়া কঠিন। তাঁর জীবনের ভরকেন্দ্র ছিল নিজের দেশমাতৃকার প্রতি অকপট শ্রদ্ধা। আর কিচ্ছু না! আর কোনোকিছু কিংবা কোনো মানুষের প্রতি তিনি দায়বদ্ধ ছিলেন না। কাউকে পরোয়া করেননি। কোনো বাধাবন্ধন সহ্য করেননি। ভেতো, ভীরু, ক্ষমতার-পদলেহনকারী বাঙালির ঘরে তাঁর মতো সিংহের জন্মগ্রহণ একটা অকল্পনীয় ঘটনা!

বাঙালি তাঁকে সম্মান জানিয়েছে, মাথায় তুলে নেচেছে। একমাত্র রবীন্দ্রনাথ ছাড়া আর কাউকে বাঙালি এতটা উঁচু বেদীতে প্রতিষ্ঠা করেনি। কিন্তু তাঁর জীবন নিয়ে আজ পর্যন্ত একটাও পরিপূর্ণ উপন্যাস লেখা হয়নি বাংলাভাষায় (রবীন্দ্রনাথের জীবন নিয়েও নয়)। এই উপন্যাসটা মারাঠি ভাষায় রচিত। আমি পড়েছি বাংলা অনুবাদে। যেরকম নিষ্ঠার সঙ্গে, গবেষণার পরিশ্রমে, সাবলীল সজীব গদ্যে, এই উপন্যাসটা লেখা হয়েছে, তার জন্যে লেখকের প্রতি শুধু আন্তরিক কৃতজ্ঞতা জানানো যায়! বইয়ের শেষে "তথ্যসূত্র" ও "গ্রন্থপঞ্জী" অংশদুটিতে চোখ বোলালে তাজ্জব হতে হয়।

নেতাজি সুভাষচন্দ্র বসুকে কেউ কেউ উল্কার সঙ্গে তুলনা করেন। কিন্তু তিনি উল্কা ছিলেন না মোটেও। একটি প্রজ্জ্বলন্ত মশাল ছিলেন। পরাধীন দেশকে স্বাধীন করার উদ্দেশ্যে মশালটা আজীবন দাউ দাউ করে জ্বলেছে। কেউ তাঁকে নেভাতে পারেনি! তাঁর জীবনের কথা জানতে পেরে বাঙালি হিসেবে গর্ববোধ হয়। আবার পাশাপাশি এটাও মনে হয় যে, সেই মশালের একটা ছোট্ট স্ফুলিঙ্গের অস্তিত্বও কি আজকের বৃহত্তর বাঙালি সমাজে খুঁজে পাওয়া যাবে?

Westerners may be more familiar with Gandhi, but it's a shame. Subhas Chandra Bose was as great a man, and more people should learn about him. This is just the book for that. It's is novelization of the man's life, and allows you to imagine yourself living at the time Bose began his quest for Indian independence. Much easier to absorb than a history book, you can learn about Bose's campaign against the British. Had it been successful, Indian independence would have occurred before the end of WWII. It's fascinating to realize what he scarified, and what could have been.

ಈ ವರ್ಷ ಓದಿದ ಮೊದಲ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ. ಸುಮಾರು 2 ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಹಿಂದೆ ಸಪ್ನ ಬುಕ್ ಹೌಸ್ ನಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕದ ಬೃಹತ್ ಗಾತ್ರವನ್ನು ನೋಡಿ ಖರೀದಿಸಿದ್ದೆ ಹಾಗೂ ಅದೇ ಕಾರಣಕ್ಕೆ ಓದದೆ ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ಇಟ್ಟಿದ್ದೆ. ಈ ವರ್ಷಾರಂಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಓದಲು ಪ್ರಾರಂಭಿಸಿದೆ.

ಇದು 720 ಪುಟಗಳುಳ್ಳ ಬೃಹತ್ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ. ಸುಭಾಷ್ ಚಂದ್ರ ಬೋಸರ ಸಹಚರಿಗಳಾದ ಶಹನವಾಜ್, ಗುರುಭಕ್ಷಸಿಂಗ್ ದಿಲ್ಲನ್ ಹಾಗೂ ಪ್ರೇಮ ಸೆಹಗಲ್ ಅವರ ವಿಚಾರಣೆಯಿಂದ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ಪ್ರಾರಂಭವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಅವರನ್ನು ತಮ್ಮತ್ತ ಸೆಳೆಯಲು ಜಿನ್ನಾ, ಅಕಾಲಿದಳ ಹಾಗೂ ಕಾಂಗ್ರೆಸ್ ಸಂಬಂಧಿಕರ ಮೂಲಕ ಒತ್ತಡ ಹೇರಿ ವಿಫಲವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.

ಸುಭಾಷರು ಬಾಲ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ವಿವೇಕಾನಂದರ ಪ್ರಭಾವಕ್ಕೆ ಒಳಗಾಗುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಗುರುಗಳನ್ನು ಹುಡುಕಿಕೊಂಡು ಮನೆ ಬಿಟ್ಟು ಹೋಗುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಅಲ್ಲಿ ವಿವೇಕಾನಂದರ ಸಹಚರರ ಮಾರ್ಗದರ್ಶನದಿಂದ ಹಾಗೂ ಪ್ರವಾಸದಲ್ಲಿ ಆದ ಕೆಟ್ಟ ಅನುಭವಗಳಿಂದ ಮನೆಗೆ ಮರಳಿ ಬರುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಶಾಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿರುವಾಗ ರಾಣಿಯ ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥನೆ ಹಾಡಲು ನಿರಾಕರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಬ್ರಿಟಿಷರ ರಾಜ ಪಂಚಮ ಜಾರ್ಜಗೆ ನಮಸ್ಕರಿಸಲು ನಿರಾಕರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಈ ನಡುವೆ ಕ್ರಾಂತಿಕಾರಿಗಳ ಸಂಪರ್ಕ ಬೆಳೆಯುತ್ತದೆ. ಇತಿಹಾಸದ ಅಧ್ಯಾಪಕರ ಮೇಲಿನ ಹಲ್ಲೆ ಪ್ರಕರಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಲೇಜಿನಿಂದ ವಜಾಗೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಜಲಿಯನ್ ವಾಲಾಬಾಗ್ ಹತ್ಯಾಕಾಂಡದ ತರುವಾಯ ಗಂಡನಿಗೆ ಪಯಣ ಬೆಳೆಸಿ ಐಸಿಎಸ್ ಪರೀಕ್ಷೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ತೇರ್ಗಡೆಯಾಗುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಆದರೆ ದಾಸ್ಯವೃತ್ತಿಗೆ ಮನಸ್ಸು ಒಪ್ಪದಾಗ ತಿಲಾಂಜಲಿ ನೀಡಿ ಭಾರತಕ್ಕೆ ಮರಳಿ ಬರುತ್ತಾರೆ.

ಲಂಡನ್ನಿನಿಂದ ಮರಳಿಬಂದು ಗಾಂಧೀಜಿಯವರನ್ನು ಭೇಟಿಯಾಗುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಅವರ ಹೋರಾಟದ ಹಾದಿ ಸುಭಾಷರನ್ನು ನಿರಾಸೆಗೊಳಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಅಲ್ಲಿಂದ ಕಲ್ಕತ್ತಾಗೆ ಸಾಗಿ ದೇಶಬಂಧು ಚಿತ್ತರಂಜನ್ ದಾಸ್ ಅವರನ್ನು ಗುರುಗಳಾಗಿ ಸ್ವೀಕರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಅಲ್ಲಿಂದ ಮುಂದೆ ಸ್ವರಾಜ್ಯ ಪಕ್ಷ ವನ್ನು ಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಕಲ್ಕತ್ತಾದ ಮುಖ್ಯ ಕಾರ್ಯಕಾರಿ ಅಧಿಕಾರಿಯಾಗಿ ಜನ ಮೆಚ್ಚುವಂತಹ ಆಡಳಿತವನ್ನು ನೀಡುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಅವರ ಜನಪ್ರಿಯತೆಯನ್ನು ಕಂಡ ಬ್ರಿಟಿಷ್ ಸರ್ಕಾರ ರೆಗ್ಯುಲೇಶನ್ ಆಕ್ಟ್ ತಿದ್ದುಪಡಿ ಮಾಡಿ ಅವರನ್ನು ಬಂಧಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ.

ಇಲ್ಲಿಂದ ಮುಂದೆ ಸುಭಾಷರ ಸೆರೆವಾಸ, ಸುಭಾಶ್ ಮತ್ತು ಜವಾಹರ್ಲಾಲ್ ನೆಹರು ಅವರ ನಡುವಿನ ಸಂಬಂಧಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಬೆಳಕು ಚೆಲ್ಲುತ್ತದೆ. ಮೋತಿಲಾಲ್ ನೆಹರು ಮತ್ತು ಮಹಾತ್ಮ ಗಾಂಧೀಜಿ ಹಾಗೂ ಸುಭಾಷ್ ಚಂದ್ರ ಬೋಸರ ನಡುವೆ ಇದ್ದ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ ಭೇದಗಳಿಂದಾಗಿ ಸುಭಾಷರು ದಿನೇದಿನೇ ಅವರಿಂದ ಮಾನಸಿಕವಾಗಿ ದೂರವಾಗುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಆದರೆ ಗಾಂಧೀಜಿಯ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಇದ್ದ ಗೌರವ ಎಂದಿಗೂ ಕಡಿಮೆಯಾಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಈ ನಡುವೆ ಜೈಲುವಾಸ ದಿಂದಾಗಿ ಪದೇ ಪದೇ ಆರೋಗ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ವ್ಯತ್ಯಯ. ಆರೋಗ್ಯ ತುಂಬಾ ಶಿಥಿಲಗೊಂಡಾಗ ಚಿಕಿತ್ಸೆಗಾಗಿ ಸ್ವಿಜರ್ಲ್ಯಾಂಡಗೆ ರವಾನೆ.

ಮುಂದೆ ಆಸ್ಟ್ರಿಯಾದ ಯುವತಿ ಎಮಿಲಿಯ ಜೊತೆ ಪ್ರೇಮಾಂಕುರ. ಅಲ್ಲಿಂದ ಹಿಂದಿರುಗಿದಾಗ ಕಾಂಗ್ರೆಸ್ಸಿನ ದೇಶದ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷಗಿರಿಗೆ ಸುಭಾಷರ ಹೆಸರು ಪ್ರಸ್ತಾಪ. ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷರಾಗಿ ಆಯ್ಕೆಯಾದ ಮೊದಲ ಭಾಷಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಗಾಂಧೀಜಿ ಮತ್ತು ಸುಭಾಷ್ ಚಂದ್ರರ ನಡುವೆ ವೈಮನಸ್ಸು ಮೂಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಈ ನಡುವೆ ಮುಸ್ಲಿಂ ಲೀಗ್ ನ ಜಿನ್ನಾರನ್ನು ಕಂಡು ಹಿಂದೂ-ಮುಸ್ಲಿಂ ಐಕ್ಯತೆಯ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಮನವರಿಕೆ ಮಾಡಲು ಪ್ರಯತ್ನಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಅವರ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷತೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಉದ್ಯೋಗ ಮಂತ್ರಿಗಳ ಸಭೆಯನ್ನು ನಡೆಸಿ ಸರ್.ಎಮ್.ವಿಶ್ವೇಶ್ವರಯ್ಯ ಅವರಿಂದ ಶಭಾಶ್ ಗಿರಿ ಪಡೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಈ ನಡುವೆ ಜರ್ಮನಿಯ ಸರ್ವಾಧಿಕಾರಿ ಹಿಟ್ಲರನ ಸಹಕಾರಿಯನ್ನು ಮುಂಬೈನಲ್ಲಿ ಭೇಟಿಯಾಗಿ ಗಾಂಧೀಜಿಯವರ ಕೆಂಗಣ್ಣಿಗೆ ಗುರಿಯಾಗುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಬೋಸರು ಎರಡನೇ ಬಾರಿಗೆ ಕಾಂಗ್ರೆಸ್ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷ ಪದವಿಗೆ ಸ್ಪರ್ಧಿಸಿದಾಗ ಗಾಂಧೀಜಿ ಅವರನ್ನು ವಿರೋಧಿಸಿ ಬೇರೆ ಅಭ್ಯರ್ಥಿಯನ್ನು ಕಣಕ್ಕೆ ಇಳಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಎರಡನೇ ಬಾರಿಗೆ ಸುಭಾಷ್ ಚಂದ್ರ ಬೋಸರು ಕಾಂಗ್ರೆಸ್ನ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷರಾಗಿ ಆಯ್ಕೆಯಾಗುತ್ತಾರೆ.

ಇದರಿಂದ ಆಘಾತಗೊಂಡ ಗಾಂಧೀಜಿ ಮತ್ತು ಅವರ ಸಹಚರರು ಕಾಂಗ್ರೆಸ್ ಕಾರ್ಯಕಾರಿಣಿಗೆ ರಾಜೀನಾಮೆ ಕೊಟ್ಟು ತಮ್ಮ ಅಸಹಕಾರವನ್ನು ಮುಂದುವರೆಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಇಷ್ಟೆಲ್ಲಾ ಘಟನಾವಳಿಗಳಿಂದ ಬೇಸತ್ತ ಸುಭಾಶ್ಚಂದ್ರರು ತಮ್ಮ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷ ಪದವಿಗೆ ರಾಜೀನಾಮೆ ನೀಡಿ ಫಾರ್ವರ್ಡ್ ಬ್ಲಾಕ್ ಅನ್ನು ಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಹೀಗಾಗಿ ಅವರನ್ನು ಕಾಂಗ್ರೆಸ್ಸಿನಿಂದ ಉಚ್ಚಾಟಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.

ಎರಡನೇ ಮಹಾಯುದ್ಧ ಪ್ರಾರಂಭವಾದಾಗ ಅದರ ಲಾಭವನ್ನು ಪಡೆದುಕೊಂಡು ಬ್ರಿಟಿಷರನ್ನು ಭಾರತದಿಂದ ಓಡಿಸಲು ಸಂಕಲ್ಪ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಆದರೆ ಗಾಂಧೀಜಿಯವರ ಅಸಹಕಾರದಿಂದಾಗಿ ವಿದೇಶಿಗರ ಸಹಾಯವನ್ನು ಪಡೆಯಲು ಪಲಾಯನ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ.

ಇಲ್ಲಿಂದ ಮುಂದೆ ಹಿಟ್ಲರ್ ಹಾಗೂ ಮುಸೊಲಿನಿಯ ಸಹಾಯ ಯಾಚಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಜರ್ಮನಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇದ್ದುಕೊಂಡು ಆಜಾದ್ ಹಿಂದ್ ಫೌಜ್ ಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸಿ ಅವರಲ್ಲಿ ಹೋರಾಟದ ಕಿಚ್ಚನ್ನು ಹಚ್ಚುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಜರ್ಮನಿ ಹಾಗೂ ಇಟಲಿಯಿಂದ ನಿರೀಕ್ಷಿತ ಸಹಾಯ ದೊರಕದಿದ್ದಾಗ ಸಾಗರ ಮಾರ್ಗದ ಮೂಲಕ ಜಪಾನಿಗೆ ಬರುತ್ತಾರೆ.

ಜಪಾನಿಗಳ ಸಹಕಾರದಿಂದ ಆಜಾದ್ ಹಿಂದ್ ಫೌಜ್ ಅನ್ನು ಬಲಪಡಿಸಿ ಭಾರತದ ಮೇಲೆ ಆಕ್ರಮಣ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಜಪಾನ್ ಸೈನ್ಯದ ಮೇಲಾಧಿಕಾರಿಗಳ ನಡುವೆ ಇದ್ದ ವೈಮನಸ್ಸಿನಿಂದ ಆಗಿ ಜಪಾನ್ ಗೆಲ್ಲುವ ಅಂಚಿಗೆ ಬಂದು ಸೋಲುತ್ತದೆ. ಇದರ ನಡುವೆ ಕೆಲವರ ವಿಶ್ವಾಸಘಾತುಕತನದಿಂದಾಗಿ ಬ್ರಿಟಿಷರುಮೇಲುಗೈ ಪಡೆಯುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಜಪಾನ್ ಮೇಲೆ ಅಮೆರಿಕ ಅಣುಶಕ್ತಿ ಪ್ರಯೋಗಿಸಿ ಶರಣಾಗತಿಯಾಗುವಂತೆ ಮಾಡುತ್ತದೆ. ತದನಂತರ ರಷ್ಯಾಕ್ಕೆ ಹೊರಟು ಅವರ ಬೆಂಬಲದೊಂದಿಗೆ ಹೋರಾಟ ಮುಂದುವರೆಸುವ ನಿರ್ಧಾರದಿಂದ ವಿಮಾನ ಹತ್ತುವ ಸುಭಾಷರು ಮರಳಿ ಬಾರದ ಲೋಕಕ್ಕೆ ಪಯಣಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ.

ಪುಸ್ತಕದುದ್ದಕ್ಕೂ ಸುಭಾಷರ ದೇಶಪ್ರೇಮ, ಛಲ ಹಾಗೂ ಗುರಿಯನ್ನು ಬೆನ್ನಟ್ಟುವ ರೀತಿ ಓದುಗರ ಮೈನವಿರೇಳುವಂತೆ ಮಾಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಅದರಲ್ಲೂ ಅವರು ಸೈನಿಕರನ್ನು ಹುರಿದುಂಬಿಸುವ ರೀತಿ ಎಂಥವರಲ್ಲೂ ದೇಶಪ್ರೇಮವನ್ನು ಜಾಗೃತಗೊಳಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಮಹಿಳಾ ಸೈನಿಕ ರೆಜಿಮೆಂಟಿನ ಸ್ಥಾಪನೆ ಸುಭಾಶ್ಚಂದ್ರರು ಯಾವ ರೀತಿ ಹೊಸತನಕ್ಕೆ ತೆರೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಪ್ರಸ್ತುತಪಡಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಸ್ವತಂತ್ರ ಭಾರತದ ಬಗೆಗಿನ ಅವರ ವಿಚಾರಧಾರೆಗಳು ಇಂದಿಗೂ ಪ್ರಸ್ತುತ. ಅಹಿಂಸೆಯಿಂದ ಬ್ರಿಟಿಷರ ಮನವೊಲಿಕೆ ಸಾಧ್ಯವಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಬಲವಾಗಿ ನಂಬಿದವರು ಅವರು ಮತ್ತು ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಕೊನೆಯವರೆಗೂ ಬದ್ಧರಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ರಣಾಂಗಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಜಪಾನ್ ಸೈನ್ಯ ಹಾಗೂ ಆಜಾದ್ ಹಿಂದ್ ಫೌಜನ ಕೆಚ್ಚೆದೆಯ ಹೋರಾಟ ಎಂತಹವರಲ್ಲೂ ಕಣ್ಣೀರು ತರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.

ಓದಿ ಮುಗಿಸಿದಾಗ ಅನಿಸಿದ್ದು ಇಷ್ಟೇ. ಒಂದು ವೇಳೆ ಜಪಾನ್ ಬೆಂಬಲಿತ ಆಜಾದ್ ಹಿಂದ್ ಫೌಜ್ ತನ್ನ ಕಾರ್ಯಾಚರಣೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಯಶ ಕಂಡಿದ್ದರೆ ಭಾರತದ ಇತಿಹಾಸವೇ ಬೇರೆಯಾಗಿರುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ದುರದೃಷ್ಟವಶಾತ್ ಅವರ ಬಗ್ಗೆಯಾಗಲಿ ಅವರ ಹೋರಾಟದ ಬಗ್ಗೆಯಾಗಲಿ ಎಲ್ಲೂ ವಿಸ್ತೃತವಾಗಿ ಚರ್ಚೆಯಾಗಿಲ್ಲ. ಸುಭಾಶ್ಚಂದ್ರರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ತಿಳಿದುಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ಇದಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಉತ್ತಮ ಕೃತಿ ಇನ್ನೊಂದಿರಲಾರದು ಎಂಬುದು ನನ್ನ ವೈಯಕ್ತಿಕ ಅನಿಸಿಕೆ. ಸಾಧ್ಯವಾದಲ್ಲಿ ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಓದಲೇಬೇಕಾದ ಪುಸ್ತಕ.

Kolkata’s international airport is named after him, as is the island formerly known as Ross Island in the Andamans. His defiant slogan—“Give me blood and I will give you freedom!”—has become near-legendary. His life and his death, however, remain shrouded in mystery: who, exactly, was this enigmatic man who dared to cross Mahatma Gandhi himself and resorted to teaming up with Hitler, Mussolini and Japan in his quest to take down the British?

Vishwas Patil’s epic novel based on the life of the remarkable Subhas Chandra Bose begins with the trial, in the winter of 1945, of Shah Nawaz Khan, Prem Sehgal and Gurbaksh Singh Dhillon, three officers of the Indian National Army, the INA. From there, Patil takes the story back, rewinding to the early years of the 20th century, to when an impressionable schoolboy in Cuttack, the son of Jankinath Bose, began to show a marked preference for the company of revolutionaries…

Mahanayak: Subhas Chandra Bose spans a period of less than fifty years, from Subhas Chandra Bose’s boyhood to his (supposed) death en route to Manchuria in 1945. The cast of characters is huge, ranging from Bose’s family to his associates over the years, fellow politicians and freedom-fighters, soldiers, diplomats, even his enemies.

Patil digs deep into research material to build up part-fictional, part-factual dialogues and interactions to show how Bose went from being a young man more or less destined for a distinguished career as a brown sahib in the ICS, to being the British Raj’s most vicious opponent. Bose’s career as a politician, his changing dynamics with people (in particular Gandhi and Nehru), and his career arc—from twice-elected Congress President, to the outcast he eventually became, at odds with Gandhi’s policy of non-violence—forms the first half of this book.

The rest of the novel deals with Bose’s life outside India, when India having become unsafe for him and prospects for support against the British seeming brighter with the Axis powers, Bose went to Europe. From here to East Asia, to the jungles of Burma and the palaces of Tokyo, is a long haul, and Patil pulls it off well, creating a stunningly vivid picture of what it must have been like to be one of Netaji’s army, intent on heading to Delhi to hoist the tricolour on the Red Fort.

This is not an easy book to read. For one, it has a tendency to be melodramatic. For another, the seemingly unending political machinations that rule the first half of the book begin to drag after a while. Also, there are too many characters who are merely named and play almost no part in the events—or, alternately (like Jyotirmoyee, Shreshti and Ila), briefly figure in a fleeting incident, without any explanation of who they are. At times it appears that Patil’s research was so extensive that he could not decide where to stop.

Ultimately, however, it is Patil’s research that makes Mahanayak what it is. The sheer scope and depth of his research shine through in the way he pieces together Bose’s life, tracing not just his path but also delving into the mind and heart of his subject in an attempt to show what made Bose the man he was. The book ends up being not merely an interesting insight into Bose, but also into the Indian freedom movement and the many hurdles it had to face. An admirable book.

Keerti Ramachandra’s translation is adequate, though she does have a tendency to literally translate idioms from Marathi into English. Also, a little research would have done no harm: transcribing Repulse as Ripples (for HMS Repulse, the British battlecruiser sunk by the Japanese) or Victor Bulmer-Lytton instead of Victor Bulwer-Lytton is a trifle careless.

एक असा युवक जो त्याकाळी अत्यंत प्रतिष्ठेची समजली जाणारी सीएस ची परीक्षा पास होऊन सुद्धा सरकारी नोकरी न करता स्वातंत्र्य लढ्यात भाग घेतो,समवयस्क असणाऱ्या जवाहरलाल मोतीलाल नेहरू या युवकाचा अत्यंत जवळचा मित्र होतो,गांधीवादाशी फारशे जुळले नसले तरी गांधी प्रेनित काँग्रेसच्या वार्षिक राष्ट्रीय अधिवेशनाचा २ वेळेस अध्यक्ष राहतो,जवाहरचा आणि आपला रस्ता वेगळा का आणि काँग्रेस हि स्वातंत्र्य का मिळवून देऊ शकत नाही ? या विचारांती काँग्रेस चा अहिंसेचा मार्ग का सोडतो . का केल्या जातो स्वतःच्या घरातच नजरबंदी आणि कसे पार पडतो या अटकेतून.

Some books coming to your library are just fortuitous. This book is one of them. For my generation, growing up in the 80s on the west coast of India, Netaji was just a footnote in our school books. Recently ,new material was released and interesting information came through, this intrigued me. I wanted to know more about Netaji.

I started on the fiction route and I am so glad for it. The book paints a lovely picture of the great man, though it does tend to be on his side more than what history might record. The original book was in Marathi and has been transliterated to English very well. It captivates from page one. There is just so much there. I would highly recommend this book be read especially by the younger generation.

I am surely going to read more on this 'Mahanayak'

2.5/5.An old-fashioned biography that heaps excessive praise and emotions; so sometimes got tedious to read. But it was very good in parts, especially the author bringing out Netaji's conflict in ideology and politics with M.K. Gandhi. The author has been mildly satirical and critical in his treatment of Gandhiji as a politician and separating the Mahatma that he was in personal life from the politician. The book is quite long, almost 950 pages and the second half could have been trimmed to make it 700.

1. It was very controversial point in history why Subhashchandra bos met Hitler .. his photos were published for the same. Before reading this book I was aware of only one point and not of other side. By reading this book I came to know many OTHER sides of these types of incident.

It's one of the well researched works on a great leader and a great son of India Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. It at least attempts to uncover the "covered-up" facts about him, which Congress tried to hide.

The only thing for which I did not give it a 5 star rating is the quality of translation (english edition) was very basic and could have been better.

Author Vishwas Patil paints a picture of Netaji with different layers of his life as a freedom fighter, leader, and a family man. He writes about the historical events in Netaji's life while trying to be factually correct. He put a lot of research effort, visiting the many places where Netaji's life arc happened. This book shines its light on many events of Netaji's life and Indian politics pre-independence that I did not know before. In that aspect, this book stands its ground.

The problem I had was with excessive use of metaphors and similes. The book often becomes poetic instead of being more prosaic and stating things as they are. The book also talks about too many people without giving sufficient background that makes it difficult to follow. These negatives and many positives make it a 3 Star book. I wanted to finish but had a hard time while reading it.

ह्या कादंबरीमध्ये लेखक विश्वास पाटील यांनी नेताजींच्या जीवनातील एक क्रांतिकारी, एक नेता आणि एक प्रेमळ कुटुंबकर्ता या नाना रूपांचे चित्र रेखाटले आहे. त्यांनी नेताजींच्या आयुष्यातील ऐतिहासिक घटना लिहिताना त्यांच्या पुराव्यांशी एकरूप राहण्याचा प्रयत्नही केला आहे. अतिशय मेहनतीने, नेताजींच्या कर्मभूमीला भेट देऊन संशोधन करून ही कादंबरी लिहिली आहे. ह्या कादंबरीमुळे मला माहिती नसणाऱ्या नेतांजींच्या आयुष्यातील महत्वाच्या घटना आणि स्वातंत्र्यपूर्व भारतीय राजकारण यांची माहिती मिळाली. ह्यांबाबतीत ही कादंबरी अत्युत्तम आहे.

परंतु माझ्या मते लेखकांनी रूपकांचा अतिरेक केला आहे. गद्याऐवजी पद्यरुपी भाषा वापरल्यामुळे काही घटनांची गंभीरता कमी झाल्यासारखे वाटते. आणखी एक गोष्ट जी ह्या कादंबरीला अवघड बनवते ती म्हणजे त्यातील व्यक्तींची संख्या! बऱ्याच व्यक्तींबद्दल पुरेशी माहिती नसल्याने कादंबरीमधील काही घटनांचा संदर्भ लावणे कधी कधी अतिशय अवघड होऊन बसते. ह्या कमतरता आणि बऱ्याच चांगल्या गोष्टींमुळे मी ह्या पुस्तकाला ३ तारका देतो. ही कादंबरी वाचताना कधी पूर्ण वाचेन असे झाले पण वाचणे सोपे नव्हते.

I had a strange feeling while reading this book. It's like what I thought was complete has a gaping hole right in the middle.

It makes me mad every time it hits me that such an important part and personality of our history, of our freedom struggle, has not been given its due.

But I'm glad there are books like this that give us a peek into our past, the past that is important and is meant to remember. This is not just a book. It is a tribute to one of the greatest men that have ever walked on Earth.

Coming to the book itself, it is one of the most riveting and unputdownable books I've ever read. Although it is a fictionalized biography, it reads like a thriller.

It narrates the story of the most influential and powerful figure of the Indian Freedom Struggle, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. He had contempt for British Imperialism right from his childhood and opposed their brutality even when he was a student.

He didn't flinch in disagreeing with the stalwarts of the Indian freedom struggle and put a very heavy foot forward to speed up the process of India's freedom.

The torture he endured, the sacrifices he made, the world leaders he influenced to help him with India's freedom are unfathomable.

No doubt, he was and still is the "Mahanayak" of our country.

The book is meticulously researched, although the dialogues and exchanges may be fictionalized. The only drawback was that there were too many characters to remember. But that is understandable, and it doesn't interfere with the reading experience.

It makes me wonder what else is there in our past that has shaped our present but is missing from our memories.

Vishwas Patil does a great job of capturing Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose's extraordinary life! The language is superb - I read the original Marathi version, not sure how good the English translation is. The only quibble I had is that there are no shades of gray presented in Bose's character. Of course, this shining image is expected from a fictionalized biography, but I feel the book would have been more interesting if a more balanced portrait had been presented!
