Pseudonymous Bosch is the infamously anonymous author of the New York Times bestselling Secret Series and the Bad Books. Despite rumors to the contrary, his books are not actually written by his pet rabbit, Quiche; the rabbit is merely his typist.

This book was definitely my favorite in the "Bad books" series. I had met the author, Pseudonymous Bosch, and bought a signed copy. I was definitely ready to dive into this.

For years, the Secret Series had been my favorite books. At age ten, inspired by Cass, I discontinued wearing girls clothes. T-shirts and jeans became my daily style. I put my hair into two braids, and called myself a survivalist. The series contributed so many amazing memories to me. I remember flipping through the pages longing to discover what the mysterious secret was.

When this book was announced, I was more than excited. My old favorite character, Cass, would play a part in the story. The last book, "Bad Luck," already featured some memorable characters from the original series that I knew would reappear. I was ready to once again meet the cast of the Secret Series in which I used to enjoy.

I loved the story. It dove a bit more into fantasy elements with dragons, swords, and "the other side." (Which, honestly...I'm not sure what that is, anymore.) Cass took a bit part, and even Max-Ernest - and another surprise character from the series!

This book was full of adventure and wonder, however there were a couple things that I had to admit, I disliked about this book.

1. The characters from the original secret series were quite different.
2. The ending. I'm honestly confused.

After finally finishing this series i can say my only regret is not picking this up when I was younger. It is exactly the type of story and plot that appealed to me the most. Plus i still enjoy the conversational writing style that reads like an optimistic Lemony Snicket.
This was a very satisfying end to the series with the appearance of the characters from the original series never being over bearing or distracting but only working to pull the whole story together. Also Max-Ernesr, ADHD icon being confirmed queer is truly wonderful especially since my ADHD manifests very similarly to him.

On the topic of ADHD, i love how clearly both brothers had it but manifested it in very different ways. Another thing that would have saved younger me a lot of confusion.

The author truly managed to create a compelling story, with earnest and real friendships with natural diversity and inclusion. (The footnote about drag really did make my day.)

I did not expect to get so attached to a middle grade series but when it checks all the right boxes, why not? (And of course dragons is most of the boxes it checks off)

It was good until the ending where it went a bit wonky. There should've been another book instead of trying to fit everything into the last fifty pages. It made the pacing weird.

I have really enjoyed all of the other books I have read from this author but this book was a little too choppy and confusing for my liking.

I can't believe I didn't review this book... anyways, it was really good - a great series and excellent follow up to the Secret Series.

There's one annoying LGBTQ mention... a main character from the excellent Secret Series who is a side character in this trilogy is mentioned to be gay... which is really annoying since I LOVED that character in the Secret Series.

Anyways, overall this book was great. I really love Gilbert Fords artwork and was really sad that he didn't illustrate the last two books, though the cover was great and the new interior artist was really good... her/his (can't remember which) style worked well for the book, but it wasn't Gilbert Ford.

The kiss scene was hilarious.

Ooooo OOOOOH OOOO. WHY MUST THIS BE OVER. I love Pseudonymous Bosch and his books. But this finale was so final and good I can not believe it. MAX-ERNST MY HEART! I loved the exciting new prospect in his life. But the story was entertaining, hilarious, and clever as always. I'm just so happy to have this series in my life for the past 9 years. It has everything I love aesthetically and trope wise. Circuses, secrets, magicians and art references.
One day I really want to sit down with Raphael Simon and discuss art references with him. The dream! But alas this book was wonderful and I am very happy.

I gotta say, I've grown to expect better from Bosch. Normally his writing is super clever and full of self-aware jokes from the narrator.
Overall the story wrapped fine but not much happened and it didn't create a lasting impression. The Secret series was much better.

Extremely fast-paced. Haven't read the Secret Series and this book's 2 prequels in years so that might've affected my thoughts on it. Overall a kinda rushed but logical conclusion to both series.

I have loved the Secret Series for so long (I actually re-read the series a total of 3x) and the characters have so much personality in them, plus PB’s writing is so witty and engaging. I was very excited to know that there was a sequel to the Secret Series, but after reading the trilogy, I felt so disappointed. When I was reading the first and second book of the Bad Series, I was elated to see crossovers (well not cross overs really, but more of reappearances) of the characters from the secret series, and I was hoping for more of that, but I guess the focus was not on them.
The addition of dragons was only okay, but it felt like PB ran out of ideas. I still love his footnotes and nice to know things he adds to the footnotes, but the story and the ending fell flat for me. The sudden appearance of another character (Satya) was fine but it was disappointing to see that after all the build up of friendship/ romance between Leira and Clay (was it just me?) Clay ends up kissing a stranger who he met recently. It seemed kind of wasted to me. Another disappointing thing was the way the villains were written. It was said that the heroes are only as good as his villain, and I thought Flint had the potential to be that villain. Instead, Ms. Mauvais kept stealing the spotlight but her villainous ways were not so heinous as they were on the Secret Series. Even when Flint made a surprise appearance at the end, it wasn’t satisfying and it made the book somewhat boring. I would have appreciated it if one or two chapters were allotted to Flint and his plots, because he kind of sprung up with the dragon thing at the end.
I admit, the moment when all the dragons came to Clay’s aide was spectacular, but it went downhill from there. The ending felt rushed and cramped, and although The Midnight Sun was indisposed and Flint’s disappearance with Bluebeard left an opening for another Book series, it was not a satisfying ending partly because there were so many open ended storylines that were not resolved(like what would happen to Satya? Does Leira really like Clay? What would happen to Brett? Would Cass lose her arm? Will Clay be able to tell Max-Ernest about the real truth behind Pietro’s coin?) or that the concept of the Other Side was bland and unexciting (not at all what I expected, especially since everyone has been talking about the Other Side since the Secret Series) I would have loved a more elaborate and engaging experience. I love PB, and maybe I expected way too much of this series, but in my humble opinion, this is definitely not his best work.

Ohmygosh!!! I should probably wait a little bit to write this review, because I just finished this book like 2 minutes ago, but I have so many feelings that I need to get out!!

1: Ok, first of all, that ending!!! My heart is about to burst from that final footnote because it’s so sweet and unlike PB (or should I say Raphael Simon) as I know him but it seems like exactly what the ending of Max-Ernest, Cass, and Clay’s story should be. Also, I adore the fact that our favorite now un-anonymous author is Max-Ernest and it makes the ending so much better.
2: Having time to have closure between Max-Ernest and Clay and having a reappearance of Cass was a great joy for me because of how much I love the Secret Series. Max and Cass have a big place in my heart, and I’m so happy that Max found someone to be with that makes him happy. 😊

I rated this book 4 stars because in terms of my personal enjoyment and nostalgia over one of my absolute favorite childhood series coming to a close, it would be 5-stars, but in terms of actually writing quality and story contents, it would be a 3 or maybe a four. I extremely enjoyed my time with this book (and all of the other books in this world) and it will stick with me for a very long time!!

Bad news is a very good book. It has mystery, fantasy, magic, and everything else you could want in a book. It is the third book of the series by Pseudonymous Bosch. The main character has to use his power of speaking to dragons to save the lives of a few dragons. It is a very descriptive book and is a good book to get laughs out of. Another reason why everyone should read this book is because at the end, the author reveals his real name.

At last, dari segi terjemahan, favorit saya tetap buku kedua. So, 3 dari 5 bintang untuk Bad News. I liked it.

In the final book of the series Clay is sent off on a mission. Infiltrate the Midnight Sun's dragon reserve. Bring back Cass. Bring back Ariela. Does Clay have what it takes to be a hero?

This book was a great conclusion to the series but sadly not my favorite.
The most disappointing element of this story was the narrator. I know I know.... The narrator isn't actually a character and shouldn't affect my discount about a book that much BUT it totally does. While the narrator was funny and still a bit snarky, he wasn't as present in this book as the other two. He has a few prescious insertions of knowledge and only a few humorous comments. Other than that the narrator is uncommonly quiet.
Now I totally understand the reasons why the narrator is not as loud this time, it still makes me a bit sad. Clay definitely takes over the role of the hero. He has hello from a new friend, but he has to do much of the hero work all alone this time. Therefore the narrator holds back and let's Clay shine.
This has an amazingly satisfying ending. The Midnight Sun does not win the day but they are also not crushed. They walk away to be bad another day. However their nafarious plan to get to the other side has been fooled. The dragons do not win the day, instead they arrive only to rescue the captured dragons. The only sad part is that 3 dragons seem to be lost. It seems to be a very realistic ending. Then just when you think it is all over and wrapped up nicely, Clay had an epiphany that opens the door for a possiblity of another series. Cool!!

Ironic that the least aptly titled book of the series is possibly the greatest of the three. However, the Bad Series differs greatly from the Secret Series in its scope. Whereas the Secret Series uses 5 books (and 5 senses) to tell 5 intertwined stories about Max-Ernest and Cass' battle with the Midnight Sun, the Bad Series uses 3 books to essentially tell 2 stories. Honestly, if it weren't geared towards Middle Grade readers, I think Bad Luck and Bad News might have been merged into a single tome.

Perhaps it's the culmination of the plotlines that makes this book seem to stand above the others. But while we do get resolution to many plot threads, I can't help but feel that Pseudonymous Bosch has rushed the ending once again. Not to the level that Bad Luck felt cut short, but in the end, we are given

It would appear that P. Bosch has left himself an opening to tell more stories in this world. This is not necessary a "bad" thing. ;)

More dragons! Clay continues his struggles against the Midnight Sun but with new friends and old. The old friends take a bit of a back seat so this is really about Clay interacting with a new crowd again instead of deepening relationship like in the previous book. This adventure moves along quickly and kids will probably really like it. There is a brief reference to a homosexual relationship that ultra conservative people will probably not even notice. This adventure concludes the trilogy but doesn't really end anything. The characters may show up in a different series but won't be the main players any more. The feeling is that this arc is complete, there will be new champions in the fight.

Review: This was the final book in the Bad Magic series. I highly recommend reading the Secret series first. If you had a middle grade kiddo who likes magic, dragons, and magical events, this is definitely the duo-series for them. I came by Bosch accidentally, about 3 years ago, maybe? Now I’m off to read the Unbelievable Oliver series next. When it comes to reading Bosch’ alter-ego, Raphael Simon, I’ll be waiting for what’s next.

It was such a struggle to me on what to rate this book. I was torn between four or five stars, so I’m going to settle for a 4.5 star rating. Unfortunately Goodreads doesn’t allow half star ratings (which they should). Pseudonymous Bosch is such a clever author, and I love his style of writing! For example having a chapters beginning being told from the perspective of a beetle was pretty cool and something I would never have thought thought to do if I wrote the book. I don’t know though, I think the reason why this wasn’t five stars for me was the ending felt rushed, and I was surprised to see the books were only a trilogy. I just felt like more could have been added to make it better.

This was an exciting and enjoyable conclusion to the "Bad Series." Overall, this trilogy was not as endearing as the Secret Series (which is follows as something of a sequel), but it was charming and entertaining enough in its own right. There were a few unnecessary tangents thrown into the story along the way, which I would have preferred to do without, but at least they were subtle and not in your face. By and large, it was simply a fun little fantasy told with gentle good humor. Not that bad!

I really do like these books. Pseudonymous Bosch did an excellent job at creating interesting characters. I also liked all of the little trivia facts that were strewn throughout the book. I think it would be excellent for children to read and learn new vocabulary and let their mind wonder in an imaginary world. Although the ending was a little bit of a cliff hanger and somewhat predictable, it didn't take away from the pure joy I felt from going through the story.

The only thing I can say without a single doubt is that I wish there was more!

LIGHT SPOILERS (I hint at stuff but don’t give character’s names in the spoilers)

I quite enjoyed this book and one of the only gripes I really have is that one of the characters that I loved to death was randomly said to be gay? I didn’t enjoy that aspect personally. I also was sad that two of the character hinted to be together in early books didn’t end up together (this is also weirdly enough happened with other couple). Personally I’m going to pretend the book ended exactly how I wanted too lol.
