Carolyn Keene is a writer pen name that was used by many different people- both men and women- over the years. The company that was the creator of the Nancy Drew series, the Stratemeyer Syndicate, hired a variety of writers. For Nancy Drew, the writers used the pseudonym Carolyn Keene to assure anonymity of the creator.

Edna and Harriet Stratemeyer inherited the company from their father Edward Stratemeyer. Edna contributed 10 plot outlines before passing the reins to her sister Harriet. It was Mildred Benson (aka: Mildred A. Wirt), who breathed such a feisty spirit into Nancy's character. Mildred wrote 23 of the original 30 Nancy Drew Mystery Stories®, including the first three. It was her characterization that helped make Nancy an instant hit. The Stratemeyer Syndicate's devotion to the series over the years under the reins of Harriet Stratemeyer Adams helped to keep the series alive and on store shelves for each succeeding generation of girls and boys. In 1959, Harriet, along with several writers, began a 25-year project to revise the earlier Carolyn Keene novels. The Nancy Drew books were condensed, racial stereotypes were removed, and the language was updated. In a few cases, outdated plots were completely rewritten.

Other writers of Nancy Drew volumes include Harriet herself, she wrote most of the series after Mildred quit writing for the Syndicate and in 1959 began a revision of the first 34 texts. The role of the writer of "Carolyn Keene" passed temporarily to Walter Karig who wrote three novels during the Great Depression. Also contributing to Nancy Drew's prolific existence were Leslie McFarlane, James Duncan Lawrence, Nancy Axelrod, Priscilla Doll, Charles Strong, Alma Sasse, Wilhelmina Rankin, George Waller Jr., and Margaret Scherf.

As written by my 14 year old self:
The case of the artful crime - Of course, there is a lot of mystery in it but there is something a lot more than mystery too.

While working on the case, Nancy receives a threatening note which read, "Give up, Nancy Drew, while you still can" and the seconal in her glass of water was enough to scare her off.

Shawn requests Nancy to help him solve the problems in the restaurant. At the beginning Nancy thinks that the case is simple but it's not so at the end. One night, while Nancy was in the restaurant, she heard a sound in the kitchen. She saw the person and recognized them. She thought that the case was now over. But soon the next moment she saw another person with baggy clothing messing around with frameless paintings on the wall. There were two ends to the case now.

Neither did Nancy know who the slasher was, nor did Shawn. Nancy, however, with her wit solved the problems at the restaurant and caught the person behind the destructions. But the case of the slashed paintings still remained unsolved.

Nancy, however, confronted the slasher and discovered something really interesting because of which Felice Wainwright's life was at stake and so was Nancy's. But she somehow managed to save her life as well as Felice Wainwright's. She was appreciated by everybody for her bravery and wit.

I didn't hate the story but I didn't feel the quality was very good. In comparison to others in the series I thought the story was lacking something. This is one of the cases where it is hard to identify what is missing but the combination of several things just resulted in my lack of interest.

I enjoyed this book! A well written plot as well. As always, wish these books were longer.

There's a guy who runs a somewhat small restaurant who is worried about losing it if a food critic gives the place a bad review. What complicates matters is that it seems that someone is sabotaging the restaurant, putting glass on a salad, starting a fire, and even drugging Nancy. To complicate matters the place has some art hung on the walls and someone ends up cutting it up, taking a particular piece from each of two works.

Nancy gets a job at the restaurant to investigate the situation, finding a cranky chef and a waitress who absolutely hates her. There's also a rich woman involved and even a guy in prison who is working with someone outside. It's a good story.

This time Nancy is undercover at a restaurant, though, as usual, it's surprising the time she spends sleuthing instead of waitressing doesn't blow her cover. And as it also typical in the stories written around this time, Nancy is joined by only one of her chums (Bess). But it's a clever story with an interesting setting, a clever disguise and a hidden plan!

Nancy gets a job at a restaurant that someone seems to be trying to sabotage, when it appears there is more than one troublemaker with more than one motive Nancy has to sort out the mixed up mess before someone really gets hurt.

This book was great! It had a creative solution to the mystery plus suspense and action that will make your heart pound while eagerly turning the pages to find out who done it. Great ND book yet!
